A week of training for the Montréal marathon for a 50 year old aiming to go sub 2:30. #marathoner #halfmarathon #breaking2.5 @global-runner #marathontraining #marathonrace #marathon #running
So much harder running in the heat. It’s the middle of winter here in Melbourne and it’s so nice running in the colder conditions. Congrats on the win in the half - great time! 👍
Thks for inspiring us that age is just a number, i'm 45 this yr and still stuck at 2:49.01; hope to narrow closer to 2:40 before 50. Looking forward to train smart-harder along your journey! keep it going mate!
Great video. I was late in registering for montreal marathon and it was sold out. Hopefully this year can crack 2:50. Goodluck for the Montreal marathon
@@global-runner my background was triathlon for 3yrs but i stopped for 5 yrs came back again 2022 ang now 2024 i decided to do full time running to achieve my running goals. I guess mileage is really the key just like fast animals in the wild, they do running most of their lives hahahahaha
@@global-runner just finish marathon clocked 3hrs 25mins really struggled in 26km onwards quads and hamstring are so tight and about to cramp. Need to.change the training approach. Next try dec 2024. Wish me luck!
You gave me hope as I going to hit 5 series soon 😢. However, I do feel the body changing, needing more time for recovery after hard workouts. You must have been a collegiate runner or a Pro before this. Age is not just a number for me though. It is very real, I could feel it. Good video!
Thank you! I appreciate your comment. You’re right. It’s not just a number. I do have to be wiser and way more diligent about recovery. But I still feel like I can do it. I have always been a runner but was never great in college and definitely not a pro. I’ve been lucky in that I’ve held onto my fitness. And I’m not ready to let it go yet! :) Good luck in your goals! Thanks for commenting.
Great video dude and like you I’m 51 with a personal best 5k 15 mins and marathon time 2,31 and I’m hoping to do sub 2,40 for a marathon next year after four years of not running cause if injuries just come back running at Xmas and did 10k in 36 minutes so maybe it’s possible fingers crossed and good luck dude
Thanks for the comment! Sounds like you’ve got some serious wheels on you so I have every confidence you can go sub 2:40 or faster even! 36 is a great time too!! Good luck to you. Let me know how it goes!
Always enjoying your videos! Seems a good decision to me that you did not finish that last rep. I'm also doing a double threshold day a week and they are tough! Also mentally. You do not want to get injured. Those pro's rest a lot and are patient! I'm give myself a margin of 10 secs for the one in the morning 2x(4x800) @5K pace (400m) and a larger margin of 20s for the one in the afternoon 5x1600 @10K pace. I think the most important is to always run relaxed and keep the form right. The bigger margin allows me to do all the reps in case I might struggle with that.
Oh wow. Those are SERIOUS sessions for a double threshold day! Good for you!! You really do need to rest after those! I feel like I’m just building into them at the moment. Definitely not at your level yet!
Yes lots of rest 👍🏻! Normally after the double I have 2 days of active recovery running in zone 1 and I will be okay again to run the local 5K Park Run on the third day. But I also feel it is a very thin line to balance on.
Yes I can imagine that feature is a good reason for me to update my watch one day! I have the FR245. It also has a recovery feature but the info it gives is a bit less complete and accurate because it does not measure HRV. Until then I will have to rely extra on my human sensors 😄. For heart rate do you you use a (more accurate?) strap or do you think the wrist HR monitor on the HR965 is accurate?
Montreal is my home city. Have you looked at the course profile ? It's not a PB course. Maybe check out the Sun Life Granby Marathon on Oct 6th. I will be doing the Montreal Half marathon. So if you still decide to do it, let me know, we can meet up.
Great video Duncan and congrats on the 1/2 marathon win in Banff !! Do you know why the times for the full marathon are so slow, is the Banff course hilly as hell?
It is hilly. But they are slow because the marathon runners had to stop for a grizzly bear on the course. I think some people had to stop for 30 minutes or more.
wow that is seriously crazy, not many marathons would have that to deal with , runners could be a nice snack for those Grizzlies Thanks for your videos
I wear the Nike trail ones because size they have lots of pockets and an inner liner both of which I like. But they were crazy expensive (CAD$110). Decathlon also do a good pair with lots of pockets but they always seem to be sold out.
@@global-runner Thank you very much for the reply and the advice. It’s much appreciated! Good luck with your training. I look forward to seeing you break 2.30.💪🏃♂️👍
I aimed for 2 minutes and 3 minutes between sets. But I wasn’t strict. Sometimes I got about 30 seconds more and sometimes about 30 seconds less. I wanted to feel recovered but not over recovered.
That would be comparable to a 30 yr old running a 2:17. "Age-Graded" results are calculated using tables developed by the World Association of Veteran Athletes, you cut a 87.2 % in Indiana (amazing) and have to cut to 92.6%. Love aiming high but I'm not sure I would call that 'within range', more like possible but not probable (at 50) and your risk of overtaining / injury to achieve speed gains like this are high on 50 yr tendons/ligaments/joints are quite high. Where are the gains to be made from the 2:38?
@@global-runner Put the word out on local (montreal) msg boards & running clubs that you would appreciate a rabbit. Have someone identified as a lock to go 2:30 and see if the stars come into alignment, good luck.
A great week of training. Loving the videos 👍
Thank you and thank you! :)

I agree! Although in calgary the summer is usually a nice dry heat and the winter is freezing. So going somewhere humid really hits hard! :)
Loving the build up, bring it on!!!
Thank you!! Bring it…
what a champion, I am really hyped for you!
I love runners. They are so positive. Thanks for this comment - it made my day!

Thank you! Oh no I hate that. Lots of races seem to be seeking out early nowadays. (I guess that’s a good thing). Is there a wait list?
@@global-runner dont know with the waiting list.
I am 34yo and i think i cant even run a sub3hr marathon. That is my goal this year. All the best mate! Cheers 🇵🇭
You can do it! I have 16 years’ more mileage in my legs so maybe that’s a benefit! :)
And good luck on going sub 3! Let me know if you do it!!

That is! Good for you if you can tolerate that. I have a forerunner 965 and I like looking at the training readiness stat. I find that really useful.

Hmm. I did look at it and read a few write-ups and it looked like a good one. I’ll take another look!
@@global-runner I agree that Montreal is not really designed for a PB. It is too hilly. If you want a flat course Hamilton in Nov is a good one.

Awesome week of training. I'm looking for a good pair of half tights. What tights do you wear? Do you have any advice? 🤝
I wear the Nike trail ones because size they have lots of pockets and an inner liner both of which I like. But they were crazy expensive (CAD$110). Decathlon also do a good pair with lots of pockets but they always seem to be sold out.

What recovery time between sprints in the second session?
I aimed for 2 minutes and 3 minutes between sets.

Definitely not probable! It’s a stretch goal for sure. But I’m confident that if I get everything right, it’s within me…
