    I’m 49. I got off the 48 year old couch 18 months ago. Ran 5k under 30 min for the first time 2 weeks ago. Running my first parkrun this weekend. You are a universe away from me, yet your journey speaks to me and motivates me. Keep up the awesome work! ❤

    I ran Manchester Marathon on Sunday and think we have the same motivations, ambitions and belief that we can go faster. I will be in the 65-69 age category for next April's attempt but it would only be my third marathon. More speed and strength seems to be the way to go. Thanks for a motivating video.

    I started running at 36 years old in 2020. Set my sights at sub 3 and did that at the end of 2022. Turned 40 recently and went back to training for marathons again. The feeling of “do it while you still can” is pretty strong.. that said. Just came by your channel and watched this video. First of all amazing and inspirational!! But you let me realize that age really just is a number.. lot’s of years to come (i hope 😁). Will follow your journey

      I definitely have that same feeling! But I’ve been pleasantly surprised that (touch wood) so far I can handle it. I definitely think you have to do the little things better when you’re older. But you’re 100% right that age is just a number.

    Well done. I've been digging into the Norwegian methods and they seem to similarly think that the two tempo/speed runs a day make a huge difference. Congrats and thanks for sharing.

    Following mate. I’m 47, running my 4th at Berlin (last 3 years at Melbourne) this year. Late starter for M distance in life but hit a Sub 3 last year with my first structured training block, and know I can go 2:45-2:49 this year.
    It doesn’t get easier this side of life, so we do have to take care of the little things for sure. Let’s do this!

I ran 3:45 at Chicago in October and wondered if I could faster - you’ve helped me overcome my self doubt.     Great report! I’m following along with some similarities(turning 50 next year) and let my fitness go, weight gain also. I’m trying to fight back! Ultimate goal is a BQ in the 50-55 cat. Years ago. I qualified, but never had the means to actually go.

    Such great advice for us older runners. I just turned 55 this year and looking to break the 3:30 barrier that I've had for a few years. I came close at Buffalo last year but blew up at 32K (was on pace for 3:28) and struggled the last 10. I am doing a few half's this spring to work on speed and then build for the fall at the Wineglass Marathon.

      Love it! Thanks for the comment. Those last 10k are super tough. If you can operate in those kms then you’ve cracked the marathon. You’ll get there! It’s such a difficult distance to nail. (Which is probably its appeal!)

    Enjoyable video and impressive content. The ‘faster’ alternate to Sydney is the Melbourne Marathon a month later - a very quick, flat course.

      @@global-runner I ran 2:47:30. Yes - it's far from my PB, but I only had 8 weeks prep going in. Also had a dodgy hip in the last week which cast a lot of doubt in my mind. Hoping to break 2:40 at the end of the year. Will be watching your channel with interest 🙂

    Another sub here 👍 good luck for Sydney, will follow with interest. Just dipped under 2:30 as v45 (Manchester) and wanting to get sub 70 half while I still have it in me. Flirted with double threshold last year and felt it wasn’t for me but you’ve tempted me to try again!

      I never quite got under 70 for the half! I had times when I should have, but I never seemed to get the right day/race/weather. You got this though, I’m sure of it.

      (And don’t get injured doing the double thresholds!! You’re clearly doing something right so if it ain’t broke…)!

      @@global-runner Increased (but unknown) risk of injury was what stopped me really committing to double threshold, I backed off at the first sign of impaired recovery. No way I am getting a lactate monitor so would be all to feel. Whenever I look at people who do it and their sessions I think it has to produce decent training effect if your body can handle it, but that doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone.

      Wise words! I deliberately started slowly. I basically did 60% of a normal session in the morning and 60% in the afternoon at the start and then built it up from there. I think the key for me was to relax in both sessions.
      It’s funny though - sometimes I’d have a terrible morning session and the afternoon session would make up for it and then other days I’d have a great morning session and a terrible afternoon and be left wishing I’d just left it alone! Ha

    I ran my first marathon a week before my 50th birthday, it was London 2 weeks ago. I was thrilled to finish. However, not down so much as a bit lost. I miss the absolute focus you mention. Unlike you, I don’t have a clear longer term goal. I want to run faster, so my takeaway is to work on some short term speed. Keep up the good work!

    Nothing on shoes or gear or supplements.. just on what actually matters: the training. Unfortunately probably not a recipe for large numbers of views, but Hoser, I appreciate every minute of it. I am 52, started running 18 months ago (I raced bikes for 20+ years), ran my first half marathon last year 1:40 will be running Valencia Marathon in December.. Hoping for 3h30.. Keep up the content.. It's definitely positive motivation for the rest of us. Go Hoser !

    Wow loved this I qualified for Sydney with 2.46 at Chicago but I’ve opted for Berlin. I just ran 2.42 at London aged 52… so hoping to get close to 2.40 in September. I’ll keep an eye out for you, are you on Strava? Good luck

      I don’t pay as much attention to my heart rate as I should. I do easy runs but I probably run them too hard and maybe I should be looking at my heart rate more. I sometimes feel like I’m better off doing cross training if I want to stay in zone 2 (like the elliptical or bike).

    So cool. 51yr old, 3.13 marathon PB earlier this year. Very nice insights. Quick q - time is always the main thing for is "non-elite" runners. Do you run full time? Or do you juggle running around other things as well? If so, how do you manage fitting all your training in (not just the running, but the gym work, recovery work etc)?

      I have a full time job and kids so there is a lot of juggling! I don’t always find time but I do my best. With the exercises I just chop away at them. If I try and do all 9 in one go then it gets too daunting and I’ll never do them. So some days I might do 1 or 2 exercises and other days I might do a few more. I always try and fit it in around “Netflix” time. :)

    While not quite at your level, I did something similar recently, running my first Half Marathon ever, at age 51, running a 1:25. Felt quite good to break 90 minutes.

      @@global-runner Oh, I've been a runner for 37 years now, but like I said, this was my first attempt at a Half...yes, it may have given me the bug, however, I'm currently fighting a moderate injury less than a month after that race. It may take a while to get back into shape for another.

    You are a great inspiration🏆, with age 44 i tried to smash Boston in under 2 hours 49 minutes and 59 seconds and got humbled. Instead of at least saving a new personal best time of under 2:56:22 or SUB 3 emergency 🚨 , I ended up with 3:12:01 and incredibly persistent cramps afterwards. Interestingly, I also have a tip from Coach Greg as my top priority for the next attempt: Fast finish long runs! You've shown us how to make up for a missed goal, thank you! Although, unlike you, I have never run a PB like this before, it definitely makes up for your age!🔨✨

      Yes❤, it actually helps me a lot and I feel better because I thought my gap was too big. I put everything on one card with the idea of a positive split. In my opinion, it just didn't made sense to run slower downhill and up to Newton Hills to catch up afterwards...🤪

    Whoa, impressive effort is an understatement. You're rockin' it but I totally understand wanting to continue to improve and challenge yourself. One question I'm wondering about your quad pain late in the race is about your hydration. Were you peeing Clear & Copiously 1-2 times soon after the finish? Running as fast as you do, it's extra hard to hydrate during. Is it something that can also be improved upon? Just a thought.

      That could definitely be part of it. I have never needed much fluid but in this race I drank 500ml of maurten which is a lot for me. I could well have been electrolyte-deficient though. One of my friends is doing a sweat test. Maybe I should sign up for something similar!

    Wanted to go sub 3:20 at Manchester. Training went very well but 2 weeks before the race I got a cold, which then went to my chest. I started and held my pace for 10 miles and then started to struggle with my breathing, so I dropped out. Very frustrated as I want to get to the start line injury free and healthy…

      It’s important to know when to pull out. I think you did the right thing. When I started Carmel marathon I had a cough. I told myself that if I was feeling terrible I would pull out at halfway and then find another marathon in 2-3 weeks.
      Is there another one you could do? You have all the training done…

    Been doing 2 double days, where mornings might be 5 times 8mins on (1min 5k, 6min HM, 1min 5k), 3mins steady. Basically trying to draw out the TTE (how long you can stay at threshold). And the evening is the same as you, 20mins tempo, between 15mins steady on both sides for 50mins total.
    I haven't taken a rest day this block (week 15/18) which requires 4 easy days to keep my fatigue balanced. And my Long runs max at 36k, and I think with 14k (broken up) at MP. Basically relying on built up fatigue to drive adaptation instead of overdistance and huge MP sections. Since I think crazy hard long runs would throw off my weekly fatigue balance. I've also changed to 2 build weeks, and a 1 week cutback/testing week. Where again, at 50yrs old, with no rest days and fairly heavy volume, 3 build weeks felt like too much.
    Really appreciate you sharing your journey, and training methodology. We live in a golden age of information sharing, which is clearly driving all of us to better results!

      @@global-runner I'm trying to go sub 3:15hr on Mother's day May 12th, which should hopefully get me a bib for Boston 2025. But with the recent rumblings about dropping the qualifying times across the board, and still have a cut-off on top of it. Even 10mins below the current BQ might not be safe. 1st world problems.

    This video came to me right on the day I had a DNF in the Copenhagen Marathon aprox 30 meters before the finish line. Was walked in by samaritans. Only me quads went after only 17 km and from that point the race was basically on will alone. I'm 47 and this was my first marathon. Been running regularly for about a year. Odly I almost ran an even split and would have come in about 3:24 had I not begun wobbling. In all of my training I have never had problems with my quads so it is a bit of a mystery. Im guessing my fueling was not on point even though I drank at every water station, but half to it went on down my shirt, Im not good at running while drinking :-).

      @@global-runner Elctrolytes yes maybe. I do sweat a lot (I think) so maybe I need more electrolytes than others. I would be nice if someone could analyze my race, because Im not entirely sure what went wrong. I was okay shortly after only I could barely walk because of my quads. Weirdly my calfs and hamstrings was more than fine pretty much like before the race. Thank you for asking.

      So I think my next video (which will come out on Friday) is one you’re going to want to watch. I went to a physio to get a strength routine to help out with the fact that my quads were always the first things to fatigue. He gave me some exercises and I’ve put them in a video. In short, it seems that strengthening the posterior chain (back half of the legs) is part of the solution, so you don’t overload the quads.

    Great video and look forward to watching your channel. I’d recommend run elite written by Andrew Snow. He recommends strides and hill sprints of 8 secs and lots of them to build speed in the base phase mixed with easy mileage. Is there room in your schedule for more strides? This way you gain more speed without burning your body out, going anaerobic. Looks like you’re dojng weights but have you considered low repetitions with 5 minutes recovery to build strength? It seems a long time to recover but there are big benefits of heavy weight training but risks. Hope all goes well

      These are great tips. I definitely need more strides. I think I should incorporate them at the end of easy runs. I’ve been too lazy on that so I know I can improve.
      Your weights comment is also a really good one. I’ve been starting cautiously with weights. Figuring out what works. But now I know, I think I’ll delve into what you have suggested. Just cautiously to start. But definitely a great suggestion, thank you.

      @@global-runner The thing with weights, at least for me, is if I don't go 2x a week, the next time I go, I am so sore I can barely run after.. That and you might get some more niggles that aren't related to running. That being said, given our ages, I think it's something we need to do. Just be cautious but consistent.

But I got stomach flu last week, took 4 days off, missed a day at the gym, went back one week to the day and sure enough, was so sore the next day nearly stopped me from running. I have come to the conclusion that unless you are hooked up to an IV in a hospital, it's better to do the workout and suffer then to take a few days off and suffer more later !

      Of course!
      Sunday is usually the long run. And I alternate - one week super long and the next week shorter but faster.
      Tuesdays and Thursdays are sessions. One of them will be a double threshold day. Sometimes I also do a session on Saturday too but I play it by ear.
      The other days are easy runs or cross training. I try and do strength twice a week and bike twice a week. But I really listen to how I’m feeling and if in doubt I’ll focus on cross training rather than going for idle miles.

      @@global-runner as with all running it can be a fine line and different for everybody. I had a serious injury last year from running marathons too close to each other, even having the second one as a “jog”. Thankfully now recovered and back at same level as last year 👍🏼 … many masters I follow have been out for a while and some will never be back.

    But conifdent I can beat it soon.

      Thanks for the comment. I tried variations on lots of plans but never stuck to one religiously. I think plans are so individual and depend on the runner. I think I need higher mileage to really perform best. But obviously the risks of high mileage are real.

    Sydney is a great event, well worth your attention, but since you're wanting a fast time, look elsewhere. It's hilly, lots of twists and corners, and last year it reached 32oC during the event. Unseasonable, sure, but another reason to choose your goal race better!

    Young folks take note: when youre north of 40 50, and beyond, not only do you have to have consistent, disciplined weights/mobility/endurance training, you also have to have a smart strategy, which this gentleman has. Things dont come easy anymore, but they are not impossible.

    My first Marathon was a catastrophic. I run the first 21km at 1:19 ,and the second half 1:43. 3.02 Disastrous 😢😢. Could I have done better if I started slower?

      Don’t beat yourself up. My first marathon was very similar. I went through halfway in 1:14 and and ran 1:36 for the second half. That’s a HORRIBLE way to run it! But we learn don’t we? (Sometimes!)
      You would definitely have run faster if you’d gone off slower. But it’s a balance. So don’t beat yourself up. You’ll get there!!

      It’s a bit ad hoc. Mainly squats and stepping up onto a workout bench. Also some balance and plyometric exercises. But also willing to try other stuff if you have suggestions. Adaptability is key I guess!! :)

      @@global-runner I would suggest that if your quad strength seems to be an issue that you need to increase your top end strength (1, 3, 5RMs) rather working on strength endurance. Squats are the daddy of quad exercises. I would also offer that you should factor in the amount of miles your running per week and think about the actual pounding the quads are taking during these sessions. Don’t be afraid to drop all assistance work unless you’re noticing any particular imbalances that need addressing and just work on improving your squats (technique and weight lifted). This would allow you to focus on the exercises that will provide the most benefit whilst allowing sufficient recovery for the next session. (Source : powerlifter who runs marathons and ultras - albeit very slowly ha!)

    Days of the 2:26 is over. 2:38 at about 50 is about right. At 60, you will be 2:50 ish…. 😂
