Scream as a landmark slasher film in the 90's. Kevin Williamson's fresh and self aware script paired with the masterful horror direction of legendary Wes Craven combined to create a movie that defined a generation. Being a slasher movie with loads of black comedy that recognizes and plays off of horror's classic tropes and cliche's while subverting all of them, Scream is endlessly rewatchable and entertaining. Time to dive into one of the most fun horror franchises and ask each other..."What's your favorite scary movie?"

Scream deserves to be treated as a classic. Because technically... it is. :) It turned the genre on its head, quite literally, back in the 90's. And honestly, everything that came after needs to pay homage to it. Much like Halloween did for the 80's decade of slashing.

Scream is my favorite horror film ever. So witty, scary and funny and its pace doesn't let up either, thanks for the great characters and writing... and that opening. OMFG. I was so into it back in the day (4 times in cinemas) that most of my art projects at school were Scream focused. So much so that if there was a killer on campus, "..I'd be the prime suspect."

    • @brajeshsingh2391
      @brajeshsingh2391 Před 3 lety

Well Scream is the movie that bought horror back to mainstream cinema. Prior to scream Horror movies were either monster or supernatural based and even if well made were restricted to a limited audience. Scream is the movie that expanded the audience of horror movie by making it like a normal movie. If you watch the movie its made like a normal movie. You have normal characters, there are no monsters, no visual effects to create scares, and no deliberate creation of eeriness or tension. Its not dark either visually or thematically. And yet it creates a splash because of well defined characters, and a screenplay that automatically creates genuine suspense and scares. And that is he strength of Scream. It builds up a narrative that creates scare. Say for example like Get Out or Truth or Dare or Child's Play. Most horror movies try to built horror around a character or an event and that is why they fail because the narrative is hollow. So the scares seem forced. In order to make good horror your narrative and plot must have the scares automatically which Scream has.

Maybe I am just inferring this but I always thought that the person in the bathroom was just some jackass that was going around scaring people and was just lucky enough that Sid came in the bathroom. That was the only way I could make sense of it because Wes Craven wasn't that sloppy. His/her movement and the whole manner of that scene doesn't feel like Ghostface to me. Maybe I am just trying to justify a shitty choice hahaha.

The vibe I got from the scene where Stu describes how to gut someone was that he enjoyed what he and Billy did to Casey and Steve a bit too much which is why he was describing gutting in great detail and Billy's "Hey it's called tact you fuck rag" was his way of saying "Shut up man before they realise it's us."

If Halloween Resurrection didn’t exist, Laurie would without a doubt be the best final girl simply because of the way her character develops throughout 1, 2 and H20. She goes from someone who can defend herself pretty well but is really vulnerable and has to run, to someone who has to sneak around the hospital (albeit probably without knowing what was going on for a time) to someone who decided she was done running and kicks Michael’s ass to the point of slapstick, including killing Michael single handedly

My (probably wrong) take on that part was that it wasn't actually real, and that it was just for the audience to see to spook us out and reinforce the idea that Ghostface is always watching. Either that or it was just some prankster. I highly doubt Billy or Stu would be that careless.

Hi! First off, I love your channel! It came across in my feed, and I’m glad it did!
I have been a horror fan since birth! I was watching/reading horror way before it was age “appropriate” for me to be doing so….. and I turned out fine. Kind of. Lol!
Anyway, I saw Scream at the theater when I was in HS. It was fantastic! About the bathroom scene: it was cool hearing your perspective, because up until now I always assumed the Ghost Face in the bathroom was just another student. You know how they showed a lot of them being jerks at school, in costumes, trying to scare Sydney….. so I just assumed that Ghost Face was a student.
Now, I’m going to need to re-watch the scene.
    Love your channel!

Loved the review and I agree almost across the board, except that Dewey is my favorite character of the series. I think his flirtations with Gale in various scenes work pretty well, particularly their first encounter. I’d also disagree with your characterization of him. While he does have that childish competitive dynamic with his sister, he does seem to demonstrate his adulthood with his demeanor and bravery. I think the character is kind of the “purest of spirit” in the series, and the on-again off-again relationship with Gale works better to fulfill the romantic sub plots of each movie than just relying on the typically flat chemistry between Sidney and [insert boyfriend character].

That garage scene is was iconic lol yea as an adult I realized it’s not possible but the scene with Rose McGowen that lead up to the kill itself was amazing. Man i can name too many kills that aren’t possible or not well grounded in other horror movies for that to be a personal con for me. The garage door scene is just so damn creative to count out. Even with you arguing why didn’t you just push the button for it to go up and tuck and roll like she did anyway to get to the cat hole lol Like you said earlier tho, adrenaline sometimes makes our brains not work too well. All she saw was a way out of that room. It could have been a mouse hole and she wouldn’t have tried to fit through it.

I watched this movie for the first time a week or so ago, and the moment Billy and Stu showed up I said "it's one of them." They tried to make you think it was the principal, and I said, "no, that's dumb." They tried to make you think it was Jamie Kennedy, and I said, "no, that's dumb." Once ghostface was in the school, I was like, "ok, it's definitely one or both of them, because the killer has to have easy access to the school, and who better than a student?" When the reveal happened, I said "well, duh. You couldn't have telegraphed it more if you had tried."

    Funny intro!
This is my second favorite horror movie (behind A Nightmare on Elm Street). Scream has always been my second or third favorite horror series behind Elm Street and (tied with) Halloween. Sidney Prescott is my second favorite Final Girl (Nancy Thompson is first). Randy is one of the best characters as well (like you said, he's basically us, the movie nerd). Ghostface is one of the greatest killers in cinema. The movie is fresh and original while playing with the tropes of the Slasher sub-genre. I love the comedy and the horror references. I was born in 1998 so I didn't see it in theaters, but a few years ago when I was getting more into the Horror genre, Scream was one of the first series I went to. Scream is one of the few series where I don't hate any of the movies. I'm not a big fan of Scream 3 and even the TV series, but I don't hate them.

The opening is extremely good, the line "because I want to know who I'm looking at" is terrifying, and you're like oh shit!! I'm not a huge fan of this franchise though, part of the problem for me is the Scary Movie films have somehow entangled themselves in my memory of the Scream films, so I always just see them as kinda goofy with a clumsy killer, which is a shame. Great review as always!
