My Soul to Take (2010) - Movie Review

- Before revisiting the Scream franchise for the final time, Wes Craven wrote, produced, and directed a little passion project called My Soul To Take. This movie is so bad I still can't believe Wes Craven was behind it.

This movie is a guilty pleasure of mine. I'm not afraid to admit it
I respect your honesty!!
Same here
Honestly same I love the concept I do see where Cody is coming from but I thoroughly enjoyed this movie
It has its flaws, but also its charms. Apparently it had a troubled production (like many of Craven's non-celebrated works, sadly), which is visible on-screen. I do think it's got a great concept but a flawed execution.
Same here
Personally I don’t think this movie was absolutely horrible but comparing it to his masterpieces, yeah it’s definitely questionable how this movie exists. Concept is very cool, creative and unique which is a damn shame. I watched this in the theater and I don’t think I hated it at the time but rewatching it now, pretty disappointed that Wes actually did this but it is what it is. Great video as always Code!
I genuinely love this film and I’m surprised so many people hate it, I feel like if it wasn’t made by Wes craven people would be calling it “a hidden gem”
Exactly, everyone expected another game changer from him.
Like 3 times in his career is not enough :)
My Soul to Take may not be great but it was a fun little film. Now Scream 4 Craven’s final film was awesome
Thats because as a Craven film it is below his standards of films like Nightmare New Nightmare Hills have eyes Last House Scream series People under the stairs. The film is below his standards but if you watch it as just a movie then yes its a good fine solid slasher film because you wouldn't have any expectations going in and expectations do matter.
It's entertaining but it's really bad on a lot of levels. Dialouge is atrocious, performances are...questionable, with a cool concept it was just executed so poorly. Still entertaining I suppose.
@@dexxfilm you could say that about a lot of horror movies that people laud
I''m not gonna lie, I kinda like this movie a lot. The characters made me enjoy it. My nickname is Bug so that was a pull for me. It was different than other horror movies of the time. It is NOT good? Yeah. Do I still like it? HELL yeah.
It's not even watchable though. It's just a bunch of choppy scenes and dialogue that make no sense.
CZcamsrs just likes finding things to hate lmfao
I wanted to see this movie my whole life and I finally saw it last year. I liked it tbh
I actually really like My Soul To Take, it's a dumb guilty pleasure movie in my book
This is a guilty pleasure man I saw this in theaters years ago and I like CERTAIN aspects of the film but there’s things about it that are rough no doubt
Guilty pleasure for me as well similar to ginger snaps I can tell it’s not a great movie but still something about it….
@@princton23 Ginger Snaps guilty pleasure? That's new...
I LOVE Scream 4
Scream 4 Rocks!
I think this has the potential to be a really interesting mini-series; the characters could be fleshed out a lot more and the whodunnit aspect would be given more time and attention. Not to mention the relationship between the town and the seven, surely there must've been some people who would've wanted them gone. People who would've been scared that the killer could reincarnate unless the seven were totally wiped out. Idk, I just find it hard to believe that an entire town would be in favour or harbouring people who are possessed by murder ghosts.
The curly haired dude who played the killer, I had his mother as a substitute teacher quite a bit in middle school. Other worldly how nice this woman was, and every time she’d come and talk about what movies he was starting to work on, and you could hear in her voice how proud he was making her and how much she loved him. Last time I saw her it was right after he finished shooting Angelina Jolie’s “Unbreakable”.
❤Yes he is good actor and really cute too, and the other actor in the leading role was also very cute!!! 😊
Wasn’t it Unbroken actually? not Unbreakable.
Always and totally respect your opinion but I truly believe this movie really isn’t as bad as you are saying. You can definitely have a good time with this movie it’s an entertaining little film. It’s not great but it’s definitely good enough.
I respectfully totally disagree man! This movie is really really bad
You have pretty low standards
Cody, I caught this back when I had Directv. Paid something like $1 or $2.99 to watch it. I absolutely despise this movie, and was barely able to finish it. I'm still shocked that Wes actually put this on film.
I have read somewhere though the film that got released wasn’t his original version
Fun series about Wes movies. Look forward to more director series reviews. You've been killing it lately Cody! Appreciate all your hard work man.
in my opinion it’s an underrated classic
It's a underrated piece of shit

I love this movie. I generally think it's great
Wtf did I just watch???? Can't believe Wes directed this. Can't believe I finished this film. But great video Cody.
As a Patreon that is not a Patreon of anyone else, I want to thank you for all the work you put into your content. Even if it’s something I have zero interest in or no reference of, I always watch your videos. I get coffee after work and watch my Cody videos, for me it’s always fun and relaxing & I’m always excited when there’s new content. Thank you for being you.
Thank you! I appreciate it.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🥂🍻
Cody your review is spot on & thats what makes it one of my favorite Guilty pleasure horror movies. The beginning of this movie did grab me by the throat & it pulled me right in after that I had to see what happens next. I thought the concept was a really good idea too but the execution could’ve been a whole lot better. Fantastic Wes Craven review series Cody! 😘😘😘
Hey Cody, there's this older movie called Bloody Birthday that has three killer kids that were born on the same day and it's an old slasher, but it's a good, funny time!
I like that movie. Underrated 80s slasher
This is my first time hearing about this movie, and now hearing about this
I truly do think this film needs a remake!
I can already hear My Soul to Take and Cursed scraping the bottom of the ranking barrel
My favorite line is “don’t forget to turn on your Prayer conditioning!” 🤣
Great series, Cody. I still would have liked to see you tackle Craven's horror movies for TV, too: Summer Of Fear (with Linda Blair), Chiller, and Invitation To Hell. When you do a John Carpenter series, make sure not to forget his TV thriller Someone's Watching Me, one of the best of its kind ever made.
Hey Cody,
Thanks for this awesome review series. I love this movie. The first ten minutes I actually laugh out loud because it's so bad, but funny like "The Happening". I love the rest of the story. Creepy plot. Ive been a Max Theriot fan since Bates Motel, so I like seeing him in stuff too. This review inspired me watch this again. Thanks!
I really enjoyed this review series, specially the Shocker review!
My Soul to Take contains actors who went onto appearing in scores of Marvel movies
Always appreciate your honesty Cody ☺️
With some home video releases, they have alternate endings which makes me wonder if Craven had different ideas on how the movie ended and who the killer actually was
I knew that this was the one that came before Scream 4 and stars Danai Gurira who later went onto star in Black Panther
This is a huge guilty please movie for me. Like I know it's a terrible movie but something about it is just interesting and fun to me. It feels like a teen drama and horror movie sort of mixed. I really wish someone could take this movies concept and remake it to do it some justice.
I’ve always enjoyed this movie. I even recently had some friends watch it and they kind of liked it. Def came out during a bad time for sure
Great review. You really threw me off in the beginning, thinking that you were gonna like it. By the way, I actually like those strawberry candies.
I remember hearing about this one, seeing previews. But never got around to checking it out, and I guess now I'm glad!
You had me at bowl full of strawberry candies hahahahaha oh man. both my grandma’s had those plus the lemon or raspberry candies that came in those metal cases
We can all agree that the plot was interesting but the movie overall was bad..it wasn't executed well.. it was too much for a 90 minutes movie . A tv series would have been great..to explore the story and the characters more
Thank you Cody, been trying to get you to do this for years lol you think you can review the men in black films?
I really enjoy this movie. It's an intriguing who-dunnit with a supernatural element. And the reveal when Bug said, 'I didn't bury a ripper costume," and Alex said, 'Someone did,' in the ripper voice gave me chills.
The cgi blood also looked like something from the SYFY channel. Specifically 2000's SYFY channel
A more personal note. Where did you get your shirt? I have a mighty need
I really enjoyed this review series Cody. Please do one on John Carpenter if you haven't already.
I'm so glad so many people like this movie!! I know it could be better but I still like it.
I came into these reviews late. Did you do a review of deadly blessing? That's a highly overlooked wes movie.
as it came out before the whole MeToo movement it makes sense that it’s a classic from an abstract perspective
Great Job Cody, To Each There Own, I've Always Loved My Soul To Tale, Solid Gore, Likable Characters, Max Thieriot, Denzel Whitaker, & Frank Grillo did a Great Job, very Underrated & Definitely 1of my Favorites of Wes Craven, my Only Issue is I didn't like the Twist Ending, but Still Love My Soul To Take ❤
My God I’m sorry you had to suffer this movie Cody I made the mistake of buying this when it was released from Asda or Walmart i guess you would call it on dvd and Holy shit what a pile of absolute guff I threw this from a 4 story window in the hope a truck would run it over like the mask from Mrs Doubtfire 😂
Cody would you be willing to review the ginger snaps movies( except the third one because that movie doesn’t actually exist) not great films but I’d like your opinion on them if possible
Hi Cody
I only watch your reviews because the others don't day it as it should be!!
Save myself a lot of time and money!!
Wes Craven said it’s one of his most autobiographical
I could definitely tell the main character likes birds a lot and it features themes of family trauma that is in a lot of Craven works like Scream and Elm Street.
@@aydenvavra2153 exactly
Wow, that was pretty harsh review :D
MSTT is a very flawed movie but if you're a Wes Craven fan you will find a lot of good stuff in it.
Personaly I've learned to appreciate it over the years, especialy knowing that we will never get any other Craven's movie.
Craven always tried to tell an interesting story, to implement something fresh while playing with genre tropes and clishes, and to touch upon some deeper themes.
The concept of MSTT is very cool.
Combining super natural Elm Street 80s vibes with 90s Scream vs Mean Girls vibes is interesting and fun.
Unfortunately script is too all over the place idea wise and themes wise, just like Shocker.
And it felt like Wes didn't know what should be the main focus.
Another big issue is CGI blood and lack of charismatic killer.
I understand that his look had to be based on the urban legend, since the original killer was a regular dude.
Still his design could be better.
Unless it's a joke on Rob Zombie :D?
The whole movie feels like a spoof at times to be frank.
I hope one day this movie will be rediscovered by fans.
At the moment of it's release it was too 90s to be appreciated after a wave of a dull remakes, and not 80s enough to ignite such nostalgic vibes Drive did a year later.
Great review Cody. This Isn't a very good or well made film but I find this film fun and I enjoy watching It.
Love the videos. Maybe we get a John carpenter series next. 🤔🤔
I'm wondering how the killer looks like a WWE wrestler throughout the movie but then it turns out to be Alex (spoilers). Are his victims seeing him as that in their heads or can Alex shapeshift through "pure evilness"?
I like this movie.
I actually enjoyed this one when it FIRST came out. Have not seen it since. Guess I have to do a rewatch now. I'll get back to you. Haha
I remember I bought this on blu ray from a pawn shop for $3 years ago, I pretty much buy all horror blu rays from pawn shops. But this one was one of the worst I’ve got in my hauls
I buy mine from pawn shops too, can't beat 3 for $10 👍🏻
@@cparks2704 blu rays in pawn shops here in Australia are $2-$3
DVDs are 50 cents - $1
I first saw the film 7 years ago, and i used to remember certain moments like the bathroom vision and always wonder what was the name of the movie. About five months ago when you decided to start your review series, i was like "you know i like nightmare and scream, let's see what else mr craven has done". So when i finally watched the trailer for this flick and saw the bathroom scene, i said to myself "This what i had watched back in the day". But not until the previous weekend i finally watched it, since i heard from all the mouths, you, Jeremy jahns and some others, how horrible it was, and the reason i ended up watching it, was because I wanted to close a chapter from my childhood! So after watching it, i can't say it's complete garbage or craven's worst film, but i was extremely disappointed, not only because of everything you mentioned, but also the fact that i didn't get any answers about what was happening: "why bugs gets the souls?", "why the ripper soul went into Alex?", "how the riligus one knows that the killer can come back with 2 ways?" And I was like this was a first draft, so yeah I finally understood why this a forgotten chapter in his filmography and why it deserves a fuck this movie!
Edit: Do John carpenter next!
I've never seen this movie yet it sounded good from people that have told me about it but now watching your review it sounds like a rotten egg. But I am gonna watch it anyway cause now my curiosity is peaked about it. I wonder what your thoughts are on Hysteria the Def Leppard Story. You can watch the movie on CZcams so you don't have to buy or rent it if you didn't like it. It's about an hour and 38 minutes and 18 seconds long if you like the band Def Leppard that movie is for you
There are some things that work in this movie. I think this movie would’ve worked better if it was released in the 80’s.
I had totally forgotten about this film wow
I agree completely with this review, especially the opening. I'm not even that big a fan of Scream 4 (at this point, it's my least favorite of that franchise; I haven't seen the new one) but it's infinitely better than this steaming piece of garbage. For me, this is easily Craven's worst film. The Hills Have Eyes Part 2 is mostly just by-the-numbers and forgettable, whereas this thing is absolutely annoying. I remember when I first watched it how, when it reached the 45-minute mark, I was like, "Man, I don't know if I can take another hour of this."
By the way, I'm disappointed that you didn't mention all the ridiculous condor crap in this movie, but there's so much stupid, nonsensical stuff in it that I can understand how it would slip your mind.
I’ve loved this movie for years since I was a kid. So much so I forgot the title of it and have been looking for it since. I found it 2 weeks ago and I have watched it probably 6-8 times. So if that doesn’t say something about how much of a hidden gem this film is I don’t know what does.
My Soul to Take is cool. I saw it in 3D in 2010 lol
My soul to take is 💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩
You have the best videos on CZcams Cody sincerely Wayne
Saw it in a packed theater, it was awesome in 3D and a fun time.
This is a guilty pleasure for me. I can fully acknowledge its VAST flaws but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy this movie
This movie is one of my favorite guilty pleasures, I had fun watching this movie, yes this is a bad movie, but it's so bad it's entertaining to watch, fun fact though, this was the first 3D Wes Craven movie, but unfortunately the Blu-ray 3D was never released in America.
One of the best 3d horror movies was my bloody valentine remake
9:45 - 10:07 jesus, even Billy Loomis would say that's a bit much.
Cody can you review Steven Spielberg's duel 1971?
Maybe I’m wrong but this is NOT the first director review series you’ve done. Didn’t you do Nolan’s films. Gotcha!
I need to rewatch this movie, I've only seen it once too
When i watched it remember thinking "it was like wes craven tried to make a David Lynch film. But then had a seizure and forgot he was making a movie"
You know, I don't think I actually did see this one. Think I confused it with Drag Me to Hell. So yeah, none of this sounds familiar, but my guess is, maybe I'll check it out some point as a curiosity watch, but I'll keep my computer ready for gaming, just in case I decide to turn it into background noise. 😉 Thank you, Cody.
Cody Leach
I’d love to see you do a review on The Boys TV series available on Amazon!
A wes craven movie ranking will be awesome
The Concept is Amazing!! I really wish it was done better.
I love it honestly, watched it when I was little and had a blast. It's bad but I honestly don't care 😂
I remember liking this movie but I haven’t seen it in years
I’ve always kind of thought that Wes Craven was overrated. I have a nostalgic appreciation for the original ANOES, I love The Dream Warriors, and New Nightmare is a pretty fun guilty pleasure. I can get behind most of the Scream movies (and I do have a soft spot for The People Under the Stairs because the sibling/married couple or whatever are played by actors who played a quirky couple in Twin Peaks), but he is definitely not on my personal Mount Rushmore of horror directors. That’s just my opinion. Your review did, however, make me want to watch this to see if it’s as bad as you say it is.
Dude your wild, just having given us the Scream and the Nightmare on elm street series should put him into legendary status. I’m glad you can “get behind” most of the screams lol most people do more then just get behind one of the best horror series of all time.
How is New Nightmare a "guilty" pleasure?🤨
You can have your opinion on whether or not he's a fave for you but the movies you mentioned are WHY he's in the conversation of great horror directors along with The Serpent and the Rainbow and for a lot of people The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes (I am not into watching those last two but they both have huge legacies). This is why the over use of the term "overrated" has rendered it arbitrary--unless you can actually explain why the thing or person is overrated--beyond "It's not my favorite therefore it's overrated."
I remember I saw the trailer to this movie thinking it looked badass! Then I saw the movie… Haven’t watched it since.
I love this fuckin movie tbh! It's one of thos movies that's bad but good in away. It's a guilty pleasure of mine and I haven't seen it in like 8 years. I remember seeing this in theatres in 2010. I was 24 years old
I really liked this movie. It wasn't the best by any means. But I enjoyed it for what it was.
WES CRAVEN presents THEY (2002) is one of my favourite WES CRAVEN FILMS
The dialogue in this movie is so horrible. I remember like it was yesterday those trailers acting like this was going to be the next big 3D event. I don’t even think this shit was post converted dude lol.
The Riverton Ripper, Freddy Kreuger, Ghostface, and the guy from Shocker might as well be all cousins.
I love the originality of this movie. But it just didn't live up to it's premise.
I didn't even realize Wes Craven was behind this movie. I saw it about 10 years ago, and barely remember much from it, other than the excerpt of the two guys miming each other (8:34), the main character looking like a dude I went to school with, and the religious red haired chick being from the movie Snow Day.
None of it made sense, as it was just baffling and confusing. Bout to see if someone uploaded some scenes, because even the scene you described with the jock douchebag slipped my mind.
They actually reveal the killers name at the beginning of the movie when the dude was getting killed on the bridge you can here him say Alex no
9 souls is a movie staring Julian Moore, is a pretty good horror flick with someone inhabited by souls
Movie felt like a combination of Shocker and Nightmare.
this reminds me of one of those teenage books from R.L. Stine. Not goosebumps, the other line i don`t remember. There was a story about kids that gathered yearly to play hide and seek in the woods and every year the spirit would chose and posses one of them for the whole year and force him to do awful things. That`s as much as I remember.
Do you mean the Fear Street books
Oh man I knew the review was amazing as soon as you said nope it's not a really bad film it's fucking atrocious 😂
I had a feeling he was heading in that direction.
And i had some hope he would be positive because he likes house of wax
who the hell is bashing scream 4? from what ive seen, it rivals scream 2.
I real good 3D movie doesn't follow the cliche pointing crap at the audience. To make 3D work the director needs to understand how to use the background, midground and foreground framed in the camera. The best examples of this are Pacific Rim and Aquaman.
This plot I would like to see b repurposed into a much better version of this movie, maybe Mancini the guy who did Chucky remake this
Bug?
What's his last name?
Spray?
Genius!!!
FTM reviews are like golden tickets from Willy Wonka. They are so funny. Makes me want to punch the air when I see it coming near the end. So good.
I saw this in theaters my 12 grade year it’s ok could have been better and good job cody for the wes review
We went in wildly different directions on this one, which suprises me. I mean its not a masterpiece, but its better than Scream 4, and 3 for that matter lol.
I saw this in the theaters. I can honestly say I don't remember anything about it which is bad 😬
This.
I’d rather have something be so bad it’s fun and memorable to watch over being boring and forgettable
The dialogue was so hilariously atrocious that I still can’t believe that Wes Craven directed and wrote this film. I felt bad watching the actors have to deliver some of those lines lmao
