  • Before revisiting the Scream franchise for the final time, Wes Craven wrote, produced, and directed a little passion project called My Soul To Take. This movie is so bad I still can't believe Wes Craven was behind it.

It has its flaws, but also its charms. Apparently it had a troubled production (like many of Craven's non-celebrated works, sadly), which is visible on-screen. I do think it's got a great concept but a flawed execution.

Personally I don’t think this movie was absolutely horrible but comparing it to his masterpieces, yeah it’s definitely questionable how this movie exists. Concept is very cool, creative and unique which is a damn shame. I watched this in the theater and I don’t think I hated it at the time but rewatching it now, pretty disappointed that Wes actually did this but it is what it is. Great video as always Code!

Thats because as a Craven film it is below his standards of films like Nightmare New Nightmare Hills have eyes Last House Scream series People under the stairs. The film is below his standards but if you watch it as just a movie then yes its a good fine solid slasher film because you wouldn't have any expectations going in and expectations do matter.

I think this has the potential to be a really interesting mini-series; the characters could be fleshed out a lot more and the whodunnit aspect would be given more time and attention. Not to mention the relationship between the town and the seven, surely there must've been some people who would've wanted them gone. People who would've been scared that the killer could reincarnate unless the seven were totally wiped out. Idk, I just find it hard to believe that an entire town would be in favour or harbouring people who are possessed by murder ghosts.

Other worldly how nice this woman was, and every time she’d come and talk about what movies he was starting to work on, and you could hear in her voice how proud he was making her and how much she loved him. Last time I saw her it was right after he finished shooting Angelina Jolie’s “Unbreakable”.

Wow, that was pretty harsh review :D
MSTT is a very flawed movie but if you're a Wes Craven fan you will find a lot of good stuff in it.
Personaly I've learned to appreciate it over the years, especialy knowing that we will never get any other Craven's movie.
Craven always tried to tell an interesting story, to implement something fresh while playing with genre tropes and clishes, and to touch upon some deeper themes.
The concept of MSTT is very cool.
Combining super natural Elm Street 80s vibes with 90s Scream vs Mean Girls vibes is interesting and fun.
Unfortunately script is too all over the place idea wise and themes wise, just like Shocker.
And it felt like Wes didn't know what should be the main focus.
Another big issue is CGI blood and lack of charismatic killer.
I understand that his look had to be based on the urban legend, since the original killer was a regular dude.
Still his design could be better.
Unless it's a joke on Rob Zombie :D?
The whole movie feels like a spoof at times to be frank.
I hope one day this movie will be rediscovered by fans.
At the moment of it's release it was too 90s to be appreciated after a wave of a dull remakes, and not 80s enough to ignite such nostalgic vibes Drive did a year later.

I first saw the film 7 years ago, and i used to remember certain moments like the bathroom vision and always wonder what was the name of the movie. About five months ago when you decided to start your review series, i was like "you know i like nightmare and scream, let's see what else mr craven has done". So when i finally watched the trailer for this flick and saw the bathroom scene, i said to myself "This what i had watched back in the day". But not until the previous weekend i finally watched it, since i heard from all the mouths, you, Jeremy jahns and some others, how horrible it was, and the reason i ended up watching it, was because I wanted to close a chapter from my childhood! So after watching it, i can't say it's complete garbage or craven's worst film, but i was extremely disappointed, not only because of everything you mentioned, but also the fact that i didn't get any answers about what was happening: "why bugs gets the souls?", "why the ripper soul went into Alex?", "how the riligus one knows that the killer can come back with 2 ways?" And I was like this was a first draft, so yeah I finally understood why this a forgotten chapter in his filmography and why it deserves a fuck this movie!

I'm not even that big a fan of Scream 4 (at this point, it's my least favorite of that franchise; I haven't seen the new one) but it's infinitely better than this steaming piece of garbage. For me, this is easily Craven's worst film. The Hills Have Eyes Part 2 is mostly just by-the-numbers and forgettable, whereas this thing is absolutely annoying. I remember when I first watched it how, when it reached the 45-minute mark, I was like, "Man, I don't know if I can take another hour of this."
By the way, I'm disappointed that you didn't mention all the ridiculous condor crap in this movie, but there's so much stupid, nonsensical stuff in it that I can understand how it would slip your mind.

I’ve always kind of thought that Wes Craven was overrated. I have a nostalgic appreciation for the original ANOES, I love The Dream Warriors, and New Nightmare is a pretty fun guilty pleasure. I can get behind most of the Scream movies (and I do have a soft spot for The People Under the Stairs because the sibling/married couple or whatever are played by actors who played a quirky couple in Twin Peaks), but he is definitely not on my personal Mount Rushmore of horror directors. That’s just my opinion. Your review did, however, make me want to watch this to see if it’s as bad as you say it is.

Dude your wild, just having given us the Scream and the Nightmare on elm street series should put him into legendary status. I’m glad you can “get behind” most of the screams lol most people do more then just get behind one of the best horror series of all time.

    • @Amanda-kd1zr

You can have your opinion on whether or not he's a fave for you but the movies you mentioned are WHY he's in the conversation of great horror directors along with The Serpent and the Rainbow and for a lot of people The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes (I am not into watching those last two but they both have huge legacies). This is why the over use of the term "overrated" has rendered it arbitrary--unless you can actually explain why the thing or person is overrated--beyond "It's not my favorite therefore it's overrated."

I didn't even realize Wes Craven was behind this movie. I saw it about 10 years ago, and barely remember much from it, other than the excerpt of the two guys miming each other (8:34), the main character looking like a dude I went to school with, and the religious red haired chick being from the movie Snow Day.
None of it made sense, as it was just baffling and confusing. Bout to see if someone uploaded some scenes, because even the scene you described with the jock douchebag slipped my mind.

this reminds me of one of those teenage books from R.L. Stine. Not goosebumps, the other line i don`t remember. There was a story about kids that gathered yearly to play hide and seek in the woods and every year the spirit would chose and posses one of them for the whole year and force him to do awful things. That`s as much as I remember.

I real good 3D movie doesn't follow the cliche pointing crap at the audience. To make 3D work the director needs to understand how to use the background, midground and foreground framed in the camera. The best examples of this are Pacific Rim and Aquaman.
