    Time to kickoff a review series at Crystal Lake. Friday the 13th is one of the pioneer slashers in the 80's, giving birth to one of horror's most recognizable and celebrated killers. A simple story about a group of teenage camp counselors being picked off one-by-one was so successful that it sparked a horror franchise that is 12 film deep and still going. Does this classic camp slasher appeal to me or do I find it to be a dated mess?

    • @erich4890
      @erich4890 Před 2 lety +2

      @@alextoschi2242 so it goes that Jason drowned as a boy probably around the age of 5 sometime in the 1950’s his mom was the cook at the time at camp crystal lake . When Jason drowned Pamela snapped and lost it and went bat shit crazy and killed two counselors one night. She was never caught and so they closed down the lake because of the murder’s. Over the years they tried to re open the camp but Ms voorhees sabotaged there tries. So twenty years have passed since the murders and they finally get to open the camp back up. Well Ms voorhees isn’t gonna let that happen and starts killing the counselors one by one. Jason jumping out the water was a hallucination or a dream. Because Pamela was pumping her full of shit about Jason all through out the third act of the movie. So of course she is gonna have a nightmare of him. Jason never drowned obviously. And was living and surviving most likely out in those woods at camp crystal lake. He seen what his mom was doing of course watching at a distance most likely and knew she was killing for what happened to him many years ago. And at the end witnesses his mom being beheaded. So they close the camp down again. Five years go by and part 2 takes place across the lake on the other side of the camp grounds of crystal lake. Yes Jason is a grown man by now probably in his mid twenties maybe even late 20s. So you see it does make sense and fits the timing and story well. So yea it was a nightmare she had at the end of the original movie when Jason jumped out the water. Because obviously Jason still wouldn’t be a little boy 20 years later. Because the original movie friday the 13th takes place 20 years after Jason drowned in the lake!!!!

    Annie Wilkes v Pamela Voorhees! I still check under my bed at night for Kathy Bates! Truly terrifying. And we give the classic slashers a pass today because we take the era in to account. Fist time actors that looked like they were kicked off a porn set, and a budget that couldn't cover the catering fee on most "low budget" films of today. The genre was not respected, and a bit of an embarrassment for Paramount. The cast and crew worked with popsickle sticks and we loved them for it.

The complete lack of interesting characters outside of Jason and Pamela Voorhees makes it hard for me to put this series with all of the greats. This is a very astute review !! As for the ending , -- my opinion is that , since this was the first movie , and the film makers could not have know that there would be sequels , they wanted that extra scare at the end . But , since the remainder of the movie had no supernatural elements in the story , they tried to explain it all away as a mere dream sequence .

    The 'jump scare' at the end holds up today. One of the best in horror history. They should have ended the film there rather than calm it down with that cheesy 'what about the boy' hospital scene.

    • @cjmiller6741
      @cjmiller6741 Před rokem +1

      Really? To the parentheses question, the answer is obvious, Alice saw him in a struggle in the water. But more than likely, if the timeline is to be considered realistically, Alice was dreaming about Jason pulling her under the water, the exact ending of Carrie, the movie that inspired the final jump scare, when Sue Schnell only dreamt that Carrie's hand grabbed hers. Brian De Palma did it again in Dressed To Kill. Jason only seamed real to Alice because her dream was so vivid. Of course, Jason was already an adult living in the wilderness, but had not become a killer himself until after his mom had been killed by Alice.

    The original does have a pretty strong creep factor like where Ned sees Mrs. Vorhees disappear into the cabin and then follows her in. Then there is the part where Brenda is brushing her teeth and there is a pair of hands moving the curtains in the shower room, and Brenda notices that the Curtains have moved, but doesn’t go to investigate. Then of course there is the voice calling Brenda to the archery range where she is killed off screen. They could have showed that one, unlike Bill’s death where he gets an arrow to the balls along with two others. The fact that the camp is plunged into pitch darkness and all you can hear are crickets as rain, is a scary moment in this film.

    7:21 / 7:36 / 20:17 / 20:23 Ackchyually, it has a '70s vibe. They started working on it in 1979 (which is also when production started on 'The Evil Dead'). Some say decades go from 1 to 10, not 0 to 9, which would mean 1980 was the '70s and 1990 was the '80s. At any rate, 1980 looked and felt like the '70s.
    7:38 I hated having to wear short-shorts in gym class as an '80s kid in the '80s and as a preteen in the early '90s. Why were short-shorts ever brought into existence?! Those and neckties and high heels. All symbols of oppression.

    They can really make a dope ass trillogy with the Jason story line if they wanted to. I think they should bring back Pamela for an entire reboot. Then potato sack head Jason for 2, then finally hockey mask Jason for 3. I know this was done already but my biggest problem with the Friday the 13th franchise was always the dumb score and inconsistant charaters. Oh and plot lines hella suck too. Get some real talented score makers and directors behind it and make this shit scary again.

    Great review! I love the original Friday The 13th and it is my fav of the series. Pamela Voorhees is just f$&@ing crazy in this and Betsy Palmer does an amazing job pulling it off. And the effects by Tom Savini are just incredible. That decapitation scene at the end still haunts me today and is forever cemented in my brain. I do disagree with u on Alice though as I think she is the best finals girl.

    Cody! Big fan! I'm glad you have started reviewing the Friday the 13ths. Yes, there are much better franchises around than this. But these have always held up in my heart. I have much love for...most of these. I honestly didn't get into the horror movie genre until I was about 11-12 years old. The first movie I saw was Freddy vs Jason. I fell in love with Jason because of brute strength and the no matter where you are I'll find you type deal. Freddy scared the shit out of me. Now I'm a huge fan of the slasher horror genre and for the most part all of horror, but it started with Jason. Love what you do and have fun with these. I look forward to it. God bless man.

      Well long story short growing up my dad was the biggest chicken shit for horror movies and still is to this day. That being said I never really saw anything growing up. My mom though asked if I wanted to rent FVJ and I was like uh yeah sure. Then I loved it. Of course being i don't know 11 or 12 and the tits and ass in it I loved it. Haha then I started watching AMC a lot during October and the love kept growing for horror movies. One movie I still get actually scared by and you'll laugh about it is probably the Grudge. All of them. Ju On to the Grudge 3 American. I love the story, but that bitch still scares me. Sorry to rant also, but I think I heard once you are from or live in Savannah or did I dream that?

    I found the characters personalities in this:
    Annie: very caring soul. She seems like a go-getter, and hard worker. Surviver material.
    Ned: prankster, but lonely. Screams for attention.
    Marcy: agree no personality
    Jack: just wanted to get laid.
    Brenda: another potential for a survivor. She seemed like a caring worker who like to have fun. She seemed more like a leader.
    Bill: foolish guy with not good logic. He was already working before the rest of the cast got there. He definitely would have saved Alice.
    Mr christy: money hungry
    Alice: not the best choice for survivor, but effective. She was just an artsy too cool for the cast character.
    Annie or Brenda should have been final girl! No one can ever compare to Ginny.
    Thank you for awesome videos.... we may not always agree, but you have great points on stuff.
    Also look into Halloween 2’s history(81) a lot of material and rumors not brought ever! There is a Rick edit in Universal/MCA vault. With more kills (reporter) and more mrs Alves. More on lauries mother being a drunk too!

    As a person who saw EVERY Friday the 13th in the theaters, I know what it was like to see how the audience reacted when Jason pop up and dragged Alice in the boat! The whole audience erupted in this huge scream and popcorn went everywhere. I laughed my ass off while this was going on. I do agree with you Cody, as this isn't great origin story like NOES, Child's Play or Halloween was. It was some awesome practical effects and some excellent on-screen kills but the story is average at best. I watched this when I was 14 I had seen Halloween, Childs Play 1,3(all my local movie store had) and the scream trilogy. And I agree Alice is underwhelming as final protagonist. I think what does make this creepy is the setting the isolation of the forest the other two of the big 3 take place in towns. wether the Studio realized this I don’t know. But I doubt it as they would later place Jason in nyc and space. Great review man you’ve motivated me to check out the nightmare on elm street franchise, the franchise I didn’t check out as a kid ironically enough.

    One thing you missed out on is a clever bit of red herrings the movie toys with. You got a guy with a machete at the beginning the movie lingers on moments after the first girl is killed off giving you unsure vibes about him. Then you get Crazy Ralph who the townsfolk say could be dangerous sometimes, and then all the shots of the killer showing it to look like it could be an older man due to the dark pants and black shoes. All clues that throw you off the trail that only when you see Pamela pull up into the same jeep from before do you realize the killer you thought you were getting is not at all what you were expecting.

    If Betsy Palmer's car hadn't crapped out in her when it did, I don't think we would have gotten a good Pamela Voorhees. Without her, I don't think we'd have the movies we did get. What's even cooler is how she actually embraced the horror fans and community with the enthusiasm she did. The thing about the horror community is, they are the most accepting and non judgemental people in all of fandom. We loved her, she loved us back twice as much, and that made us love her more. And, she will always be loved

    I still remember the first time I watched this movie, it was shortly after the blockbuster video in my hometown at the time of Pickerington Ohio was about to close, my brother wanted to rent Friday the 13th the original and I went into the movie only knowing about the face of the franchise Jason Voorhees, and assuming it would be him the entire movie, and the sheer amount of surprise the reveal had of it being Jason’s mom Pamela and not Jason himself was actually, so awesome that, it created such a memorable first viewing experience.
    I even enjoy 2 and 3 which are the only 3 I’ve seen in their entirety, I’m going to binge the first 8 films over two days probably Thursday and Friday of this week but, I think out of the 3 I have seen in their entirety, part 2 is probably my favorite.

    I consider TCM (1974) & Black Xmas (1974) to be the first slasher movies those 2 movies started the slasher craze which would we see couple years later like Halloween, F13, NOES, Child’s Play, Sleepway Camp, The Burning & many more
