I watched most of the greats when they played. And there's hardly that much difference between Di Stéfano, Pelé, Eusébio, Best, Beckenbauer, Cruyff, Maradona, Ronaldo, Cristiano, Messi.
Graeme uses the longevity card, to get Messi & Cristiano over the line.

The math of that from Souness seems a bit off, but it is closer to 40 I think. But it'd still be extremely difficult, and unlikely that Haaland can sustain the level for that long to be able to reach Ronaldo on the overall, not just club goals. If we're talking about matching his 700 goal for clubs over a 16 year period, then he'd have to score around 34 a season, and that's not factoring the fact that this season isn't over yet, and he'll get more to reduce that total.

Graeme Souness, so satisfied with himself for making that calculation….but he cant count. Haaland has scored almost 200 club goals allready, so I dont know how he counts… Ronaldo hasnt scored 700 goals in the league, its in all competition with his club. Ronaldo has scored 700 goals in 944 games for Sporting Lisbon, United, Real Madrid and Juventus. If Haaland should make the same number he needs to score 34 goals each season (in league and all competitions the next 15 years;. Why doesnt he count the goals Haaland has allready scored?
    Ronaldo’s goals (700 goals in 945 games)
144 goals for Manchester United (103 in the league) 8 seasons
450 goals for Real Madrid (311 in the league) in 9 seasons
101 goals for Juventus (81 in the league) in 4 seasons
5 goals for Sporting Lisboa (3 in the league)
140 goals in Champ league and 1 goal in Europa league.
He has also scored around 117 goals for Portugal in 19 years.
…so, most of the goals he scored he played in big clubs and had great teammates to feed him.

Most goals in a calendar year in top flight English football is 45 goals in 36 games by Dixie Dean with 85 goals coming in all competitions. 60 league goals in one season by him too. These are the records Haaland isn't breaking. I mean maybe the calendar year for English league only but not all competitions. There's records like most goals in a game which is 7, consecutive games scored in which is 12 not Vardys 11. There's 9 hat tricks in one season to epls record of 5 and Haaland is already on 3 so he needs another 7 to break that. Fastest hat trick 2 minutes 56 seconds that's unbreakable. He will break records but there are so many records that he won't touch but I'd love to see him break the 7 goals in a game record or most hat tricks in a season and also consecutive games scored in too. Calendar year goals of 45 with epls record being 39, I think he will do that no problem. The 45 calendar year goals by Dixie Dean was 1928 but I have a feeling he may have done more the year before as he had 35 from August to December 1927 alone so I'm sure he got more than 10 the second half of 26/27 season but maybe he didn't who knows

I don't believe Haaland can get into this category of greatest players ever. I do however think that with luck in avoiding injuries, he could break goalscoring records.
For longevity Mbappé and Haaland have an advantage over Messi and Ronaldo. The sports science has progressed in the last 20years and it will continue to progress.
With regards to the all time scoring record. Haaland and Mbappé have both made a much quicker start to their careers than Messi and Ronaldo did. Mbappé is about +80 on Ronaldo at the the same age, Haaland similar. This fast start means the two new guys don't have to score 50, 60 goals a season to reach the milestone. Haaland is only 22, not 23 until next summer. At the same age Ronaldo had only scored 75 career goals. Haaland is on 177. Scoring 45 goals a season for the next 16 years sounds ridiculous but atm it's not unrealistic for him to score 50-60 a season for the next 10years. Then slow down a bit as he progresses through his 30s. But another thing is that Haaland is a thoroughbred centre-forward. Ronaldo is finding it more difficult at this stage of his career because he's was a career winger, specialising in timing late runs, not leading the line. Ibrahimović can rely more on his height which is another advantage Haaland has for his twilight playing years. Benzema had a great season last year because clever movement more than relying on pace which has been a feature of Ronaldo.
There's a long way to go but atm what's to stop Haaland and/or Mbappé from breaking the scoring record??

    Continuation of the other comment
    3) and this is where Souness is wrong
Ronaldo has done it in England, Spain and Italy while Messi has huffed and puffed in France. Is that right?
Messi currently for PSG 47 games - 19 goals and 22 assists -> 41 goal contributions in those games, bad right
1st career move after leaving in Spain since he was 13
Move that he did not intend, but had to because he could not be registered, so was not in the best frame of mind
Another thing people forget, missed pre-season with PSG (No time to work full time strategies with them)
But let's just say the above are excuses as I'm sure some are liable to say, what has he done in comparison to Ronaldo
Fastest player in recorded Ligue 1 history to 21 assists (33 games)
The most assist in top European leagues for a single season is held by Messi and my boy Muller (21), this means Messi may very well be in play for the fastest player to 21 assists in any European league for his PSG time, it's difficult to check this unless Opta releases the stats
Most chances created in all of Europe in 2022
How does he compare to Ronaldo who DID IT in Italy.
Ronaldo first 47 games for Juventus - 29 goals and 10 assists -> 39 goal contributions, but you know he did it and Messi huffed and puffed
From statistical websites like Sofascore and WhoScored, in those 47 games,
Messi has had 15 Man of the Match performances,
    Ronaldo had 12
This is despite Messi playing a supporting role to and sharing attacking returns with Neymar and Mbappe.
Both are fighting for pens (Messi only took 3, scored 2),
Messi shares freekick duties with Neymar
Ronaldo was the primary attacking focus for Juventus and rightly so, took all pens and freekicks.
    Summary
Despite Messi's problems with the move with PSG, in the first 47 games he's played compared to Ronaldo's first 47
He's had more goal contributions despite sharing his attacking returns with 2 other superstars
He's had more man of the match performances
More UCL goals in those 47 games
AND YET......he's huffed and puffed in France while Ronaldo has done it in Italy.
While Souness is being wowed and impressed with Ronaldo's record, and rightly so, it's phenomenal, before he lets it influence his decision in the Ronaldo v Messi debate, does he know that Messi's is even better? The stat for Haaland reaching XY goals is even more difficult to catch up to Messi's ratio.
Ronaldo 700 club goals in 943 games
Messi 691 club goals in 825 games.
Messi will, WITHOUT A DOUBT, achieve 700 goals with more than 100 games left to spare. Unless someone breaks his leg. Whether Messi surpasses Ronaldo or not depends entirely on Messi, because he is younger than Ronaldo and is currently still a more attractive prospect than Ronaldo because he offers more at the moment. But Messi is not as driven as Ronaldo, so it wouldn't surprise me if he decided to retire at the end of the season. But if he decides "I want to finish with more goals than Ronaldo", then there is little Ronaldo can do unfortunately since Messi is

Haaland has 175 club goals so he has even a better "starting point". Of course he needs to keep fit and performing, but even if he doesn't get better and end up averaging the same as he has for the last 3 season, he'll reach 700 goals when he's about 35.

So this is where he made that thoughtless statement. (Text Bomb explanation incoming. Abandon all hope (for a short answer) ye who read beyond here.
Souness's reasoning for "changing his mind". Ronaldo has done it in 3 different top leagues, while Messi has only done it in Spain.
    This makes no sense because;
    1) It shouldn't really matter the number of leagues, just the quality of play
    2) Messi has done it in more higher quality matches if rankings are to be believed
Ronaldo played 31 games for Sporting CP in 02/03 when it was ranked 7th in the World
Ronaldo played 291 games for United during his 1st stint, and from 03/04 till around 06/07, the EPL always alternated between 2nd and 3rd rated league in Europe, it wasn't until Ronaldo's final 2 seasons that it became rated 1st
Ronaldo played 438 games for Madrid while the La Liga was rated 1st for the majority of the 9 years he spent here.
But here is the thing, he then went to Italy in 18/19, that was rated 4th for the majority of his stay in Italy, but people would like to praise his achievement here but disparage Messi's in France. Italy was pretty much the same league. While Ronaldo was there, Inter was in recovery after not making the UCL for 6 YEARS!!! They were a Europa team. After Juve, their best team was Napoli, who struggled to get out of group stages. AC milan wasn't even a contender for Europe anymore, while Atalanta had one good run, and Roma made the Semis once, not even as good as France with Lyon and Monaco reaching the semi-finals. Juventus had won the league 8 straight seasons when he joined
    The point -> Ronaldo's move to Serie A == Messi's move to Ligue 1
Ronaldo played 134 games at Juve and 101 of his 700 goals came from here.
Messi on the other hand spent a bulk of his career in a la-liga that was rated 1st for about 11 of his 16 years playing there, and never below second. Now he spends 2 seasons on a league rated 5th and people are freaking out, when on an average he has played in a higher percentage of higher level matches than Ronaldo.

Don't forget. Messi is only 9 goals behind Ronaldo. Ronaldo will inevitably retire before Messi. Haaland's gonna be getting pushed to his gears to reach an even higher goal tally scored by Messi in the future.

Haaland will eventually be sussed out by Premier League teams and be nowhere near as prolific as he has been so far this season and in the German League...whereas no one (apart from Ashley Cole) or any team has ever been able to suss out and stop Ronaldo.

I still can't understand how the likes of PSG and other clubs haven't absolutely pulled out all the stops to get Messi and Ronaldo in the same team. The viewership for one, but also to be able to say that it was YOUR club who got them playing together, sounds exactly up the street of a rich Saudi.
