From the standpoint of a lifelong runner and someone that genuinely valued being a High School and then (for a while until I blew it) Collegiate runner, I appreciate how real Spencer is.
Act Complicated I was given scholarship money and an opportunity to have a program built around me. But, I was arrogant, self centered, and immature. The head coach threw me off the team. It was the right thing to do. He set standards and I realized a huge life lesson.
The Athlete Special: "Today we're gonna run 5 miles at a pace many people call sprinting." The Athlete Special intro: *I l i v e a l i f e o f l e i s u r e*
In cross country we have to sprint at the beginning and sprint at the end. It's tough because you wanna stay with the pacer. (golf cart) Plus we have to learn a steady pace when the Pacers leave us off for the woods, usually a steady job or a strong stride depending on your pace and muscle I mean I'm already on varsity and I'm in 7th grade, trust me, if you ran cross country it's tough but it can get easier.
Hey Spencer my name is Jake Ritter and I run for cal poly. We were the tent accross from you and I didnt even say hi. I was 74th overall. It was awesome to see you there, I should've said something.
Doing a little math, if Kurgat is a 13:30 guy (I think he is this year), then by math you could threaten sub-14, which is really good for a miler at this stage. Giving you a bump for track v. XC and I think you are sub13:50 this spring if you take a whack.
@@TheAthleteSpecial Seems like you have really stepped up on the endurance front this year. I am an old 800/1500 guy who is jealous of guys that can run a fast 1500 and still mix it up in cross. Great racing and good luck on the rest of your season.
@@TheAthleteSpecial I'd go along with this logic. You ran almost the exact same times at Notre Dame and Wisconsin as I ran at those meets in 2014, and I ran 13:46 the following Spring at Mt. Sac. I also think you can do a lot better in the last few XC races if you hit a good day, I ended up coming 50th at NCAAs after finishing 77th at Wisconsin. Good luck!
Rewatching this cuz I really miss Xc. During this time off tho I’ve been really putting the work in. Me and my team all have been running like crazy. I really hope I can break 18 this year.
Hey Spencer I had a XC meet today and I got 9th in my age group. I was just thinking about you during the race. It was the mile but it was mostly uphill. Love ur vids, ur a big inspiration for me and running thx man!!!! ( ps: GJ on race)
I don't know if you know this; Theo Quax was in the race. He was runnning for NAU. He is the son of Dick Quax who got second 1976 Montreal Olympics 5000 meters behind Lasse Viren of Finland. His Dad has a pb of 13:12:87 which he did at Stockholm in 1977.
I'm a highschool sophomore with a 17:42 5k, your videos have been helping me a lot and I've been improving a lot during practices, just wanna say thanks!
Got a ton of support on my last comment about my districts meet, trying to get to regionals. We had the race today and I got 14th with a new PR of 18:15! Owe it to yall to get another PR at regionals!💪
Spencer really loves his bagels 😂. Btw, I mentioned I was shooting for top 10 in my high school conference meet in one of the last videos and I ended up coming in 11th. Had an underwhelming start in 19th so it was an up hill battle (quite literally sometimes), but I’m still really proud because I was able to pull an 11 sec PR on a hilly course. Still aiming for redemption in the State meet which is at the same course as this one.
That's pretty cool nolan I have a meet this Saturday I'm going to try and aim for top 100 bc im a freshman in the varsity race and i think it will be a good experience for me
Looking for some tips. In the beginning of a race, should you sprint? If so how fast and for how long? Just for some perspective, I’m a freshman with a 5k time of 25:18. The course I run is very hilly and we run for about 100 meters before entering a narrow pathway up a hill.
my team is so bad that i’m 13 and a varsity runner who runs a 23 min 5k...i’m the 4th best on the team (but technically 2nd best because 2 are injured) we suck
Running is all about your mental strength. You need to be able to mentally stay tough, and run as hard as you can alone. Team or no team, you just gotta stay strong and run hard. Good luck!
In the UK, you'd need a no-frills 4x4 to drive through typical XC terrain in front of the leaders... and it wouldn't happen as the runners af the back will almost always be lapped.
During the week you did a session of miles on the track at 5:00 pace with a couple of quick 200s tossed in at the end just to get the legs turning over. Have you ever thought of starting the session with 2-3 quick 200s the getting into the mile reps and still closing with the quick 200s? This will mimic the racing situation more closely, you only had to watch the video to see that the effort off the start line was tremendous. People talk about XC pace but they are talking about an average pace for the race; XC races are not run at level pace and training has to take account of that fact. Meanwhile, keep grinding!
here in england cross country entails of mud, bog, swamp, rivers, hills and more mud, it seems you guys get perfect cut grass, lovely weather and not too many hills? does it ever get shitty for you??
What kind of shoes does the athlete special wear because I’m on the high school cross country team and my feet really hurt but I have been doing it for 9 years and I’m on varsity

I doubt may runners would call it sprinting. When i was in college our team would run at 5.20 pace in practice and sub 5 in race for 5 miles

I am so happy because I just broke 20 in the 5k on Friday with a time of 19:37.1 Ik that isn’t a big deal for most of you, but I am still happy
Jordan B that’s so good man congrats , I hope one day I can get sub 20 !
Good shift 👏. I'm trying to break 20 (currently at 20.12) and think I will get there soon. Good job again!
Jordan B keep it up I’m looking to get around that time next year when i go to highschool
Jordan B that's awesome congrats. I'm still working on breaking 21 arghhh

THST GUY THAT FELL AT THE END💀
Homie just accepted his fate for like 5 seconds
I thought someone would step on him.
this gives me anxiety because i’m a cross country runner and every race gives me a panic attack and somehow i end up in always top 20

I've never run a 5k but last outdoor season I thought I was in low 14 shape. I may hop in a 5k early outdoor season if the timeline works out
