    Mike, best interview ever! So glad to know about Jim now. Couple things: SI issue #1 was mailed at no charge to many TimeLife subscribers and it came w a letter from the Publisher. Regarding the sales of warehoused issue #1, SI ran ads in 1994 (40th Anniv.) and the price was $149; which I gladly paid. I own both of the pre-premier dummy issues (much more scarce) and they sell for less than they should. Another fun aspect is the cross over appeal of the several 1950’s issues with beautiful reproduction of 27 cards on a gatefold. They R gorgeous. I recommend reading THE FRANCHISE by Michael MacCambridge to read the history of SI. It.s an amazing story.

    Great interview JWH! As a subscriber to SI for most of the 80’s / I had stacks of hardly touched issues because I’m not a huge reader. Selfishly, because I tossed them about ten years ago, I’m glad the subscription copies aren’t nearly as valuable. 👍❤️

    Great video! I still have my subscription copy (with mailing label) of the 1st Michael Jordan cover when he played for North Carolina. I also used to buy newsstand copies of certain players or championships. Lastly, I used to work for a magazine customer service company that handled SI, and we'd get free copies with a blank mailing label on them. I'd taken many copies of certain players or championships. I sold some on ebay a long time ago, but the rest are just sitting in boxes. I'll have to go bust them out!

      @@JunkWaxHero I think youtube deleted my follow-up comment because I posted a link to the article I mentioned, so I'm posting this again. If for some reason you deleted it, my apologies in advance for posting again.
      I had to run some errands yesterday, so I just watched the last 10 minutes of the video today. I just wanted to mention one thing that wasn't mentioned in the interview about what would be considered an "altered" magazine with bad intentions. For issues before 1995 (from 1995 on, addresses were/are printed directly on the magazine), some people will try to remove the mailing label to pass off a subscription copy as newsstand copy. There are videos on youtube where people show how to do it. According to an article I found, CGC will detect when a label has been removed 99% of the time, but sometimes the removal is so clean that most people won't be able to notice, so some bad sellers will sell it raw as a newsstand copy to get more money.

    Having seen some top sold videos in this genre, the prices have jumped pretty substantially in the last few years. Was pretty shocked. Not just SI either. Beckett magazines, other sports magazines, etc have all jumped so this is a growing hobby and with cgc leading the way grading wise, I don't see that happening.

    I've got the 1st SI Mantle with the missing pages, newstand in VG+, unfortunately it's got some foxing. I still think it'll grade pretty high although I've never had anything graded. Interesting about Kobe's personal MJ issue. I've got Bing Crosby's personal subscription issue of Roberto Clemente's cover when Bing was part owner of the Pirates. Crazy thing is the person who sold it to me on ebay didn't know it and when I got it and saw Bing Crosby, I didn't know he was an owner! James, since you seem to know many high end collectors, maybe we could work something out with my collection. I'd love to see it stay together but after hearing some of these prices which has totally shocked me, that'd take some deep pockets, but if you know a guy, let me know. I'd like to work with you in some fashion as I love your passion for it and makes me remember the passion I had and that you're also rekindling!

    I had a subscription to sports illustrated from May 1972, until 2011. And I had saved every copy. I had also bought every issue back to 67 from my local library. Over the last few years I ended up giving a bunch away selling or trading. I kept mostly anyone that had a Boston related cover or article in it.

    Great interview! The pressing “issue” is strange to me since I’m a sports card colllector. Would be interesting to see a discussion about pressing the SI for Kids magazines and what that would do to the cards, and whether PSA would consider the cards altered. Obviously they should but it would be interesting to see how that worked.

    • @JunkWaxHero
      @JunkWaxHero  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I would guess that the SIFK cards are too thin for them to notice. Those aren’t made of the same thing as normal cards. They’re paper thin.

    • @cgcsportsillustrated5290
      @cgcsportsillustrated5290 Před 5 měsíci +2
