  • Losing belly fat is the most common request I get as a coach. Let me explain the role that protein shakes have in fat loss. Should you be having a protein shake before or after you workout? How long before you workout should you have a protein shake?
Fat loss is a campaign to change your body composition through diet, exercise and your lifestyle change to keep it off.
Protein plays a crucial role in fat loss, and the science of fat loss is closely tied to protein intake. Protein shakes can help!

I needed to see this comment. I'm almost 41 years old. For the past 8 years or so I would drink every night, I've only been working out for just over 2 years and I'm so happy with my progress, but lately I've noticed it has slowed and my belly fat is just isn't reducing anymore (I can just barely see my abs, even though I couldn't see them at all before i started working out). I decided a couple weeks ago to only drink on the weekends, and after not drinking for 5 days straight, I actually feel bad when I drink now because I feel like I'm letting myself down. Another problem is my drink of choice is wine, which has so many empty calories. I think I'm going to just stop entirely.

It feels like most either think protein shakes are something that's bad and not real food so you shouldn't have it or it's magic and if you don't consume it within 23 seconds of your last set your workout is wasted... To me bottom line: If you like them and it helps you get your protein up great, have as much as you want. If you prefer to eat your food instead, great. Like you said, just make sure you're getting your protein in!

I drink 50g of a whey protein shake with 300ml of milk as my first meal and as my last meal of the day. That gets me to about 725kcal from ca. 23g of fat, 30g CH and 100g protein. One meal I just eat whatever healthy food my wife cooks and calculate the macros and add another meal of Müsli, bread or whatever I like or think my body needs.
The milk instead of water in the shake not only adds fats and CHs to the meals but also adds some slower digesting casein and the fat also makes the whole shake slower digesting. So I don't have to worry about spacing my protein intake at specific times.
This approach works especially well for me in cutting, recomping and also maintaining weight. When bulking, I eat at maintenence like the method above and add another shake after my workouts.

Protein shakes are actual magic when it comes to weight loss, no one can drink a few of these everyday with a strict diet and still be hungry. Like it's only 100 calories for 25g of protein, you can totally abuse that without running into any problems.

I'm not sure it's always belly fat that is the issue with many guys in their 40s+ It's sometimes loose belly skin! As you age it's not easy to fully comprehend that you are aging and are now in the cross-over zone!! (that you are not yet used to the aging process of no longer having the luxury of youth on your side). This is where the elasticity you once had around your mid-section becomes far less happy about springing back into shape ...making it much harder to achieve the tight abs you once had in your youth.

I think that early on in people’s fitness journey there is a lot of misunderstanding of what a protein shake is and we see as something that’s necessary when in fact it’s just a supplement. That being said it’s still very useful if you’re not eating enough protein. I fast every morning and work long hours, I just don’t have the time to eat that much meat and eggs

Lets say i eat steak and eggs for breakfast and i consume 100g of protien does my body absorb all of that as it digests or does a percentage of that protien get lost in the digestion process? Maybe this question has been answered already but im trying hard to live on a budget and eat properly and wasting protien because i ate too much at once doesnt sound like a good idea to me. I wish these videos would also put in a caveat about potential protein over-consumption. I was using protein supplements that, together with my protein-rich diet, got me slightly above 2g per kg of bodyweight (yeah, I don't do lbs, sorry). That is considered the maximum of what's advisable, if one trusts studies. Also, one crucial issue is that the body can only synthesize so much per meal - and I overdid it there (too), with protein shake after the workout PLUS lunch shortly after. The problem is that the excess protein doesn't just disappear - it gets dumped into the bloodstream, and the kidneys have to get rid of it. As a result, the filtration rate (GFR) was well below what it should have been. I then cut protein to about 1.6g per bodyweight for 2 months AND made sure I wasn't having too much in one sitting, as a result of which the GFR value is now back up where it belongs. So, public service announcement: there IS such a thing as too much protein.

Paul, a recent blood test revealed I have high creatinine levels and my doctor says my kidneys are stressed and I should limit my protein intake. I want to keep protein high to build muscle and lose fat. Is it common for those on high protein diets to also have high creatinine levels?

Nothing against protein shakes, I keep a couple in the pantry for days our family is just time strapped. Having said that my family prefers grass fed/finished fatty red meat & organs, and other animal based protein sources.
I relegate protein shakes to kind of a second tier, for when we just can't fit in "real food".....so to speak.

According to Dr Donald Layman and Dr Gabrielle Lyon the body breaks down apx 300 grams of ''protein'' on a cellular level, so yes get your protein in.
Btw, cottage cheese requires no prep, no cooking and in a 300 gram pot you get apx 33 grams of protein.
If you place in the freezer for apx 2 hours it makes for a very cool way of eating it with whatever you want to add to it.
Healthy frozen type dessert over ice cream
Over 2 hours and it becomes too rock solid

@@kellrockets101 Like I said, anecdotal experience. But if I had to guess, it probably has something to do with consuming the protein shakes in the moring with an empty stomach. Perhaps the raw egg is passed through my system slower and therefor, I absorb more of it. Or maybe egg protein is of a better quality than the protein powder I was using..
