  • 44 Remington Magnum 180 grain JSP Remington UMC ammo ballistics gel test fired from a Ruger 96/44 lever action with 18 inch barrel.
    Range gear: masonoutdoors.com
    Leather gear: www.masonleather.com
    All shots are fired from a distance of 50 yards to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
    I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
    While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
    With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
    For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
    Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
    Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
    I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
    My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
    The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
    All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

    All, regarding the very poor accuracy of this load, after further research it is without a doubt due to the bullet weight vs rifling twist rate of the 96/44, not some issue of bullet diameter as some have suggested.
    The 96/44 was purpose designed to handle heavy hunting bullets, up to 325 grains, with a twist rate of 1-20.”
    Decades ago, 1-38” was more standard for 44 Magnum carbines, back when the 240 grain bullet was the industry standard, lighter weights more popular and heavier bullets much less common.
    Recently, nearly all 44 Magnum carbines from nearly all manufacturers are using 1-20” as this twist rate typically produces far better accuracy with the current popular range of bullet weights in 44 Magnum (roughly 225 grains - 300+ grains). The old 1-38” twist was more or less a holdover from the 44 special (the 44 Magnum’s predecessor), which commonly used 200 grain bullets at much, much lower velocities.
    The 96/44 came out in the late 1990’s and production ran through the 2000’s, right when heavy hard cast lead bullets loaded to +p and +p+ levels were becoming popular, and of course the standard 240 grain hunting loads were still popular, all of which reached much higher velocities from a carbine than a revolver, lending to the need of a faster twist for stabilization, especially at the higher carbine velocities.
    As always, your individual results may vary.

    I was firing some of this stuff through my 6" revolver on my channel. These loads had the most recoil out of the 5 loadings I used. The muzzle flash I was able to capture was insane, meaning there is a whole lot of unburned powder that is burning off after the bullet has exited the muzzle. My average velocity on these was 1565fps at 10yds, which is nothing to sneeze at. It appears you ahchieved over a 50% increase in energy over my revolver. That's impressive.

    44 Magnum is one of those rounds I have only recently gotten into. Have shot .357 since I was a teenager put of an old Taurus my uncle owned. Have shot .45 Colt for a couple years now. Pulled a deal with my buddy Jerrod who traded me a Mini-14 for a Ruger Redhawk in .44 Mag. Got a box of Ammo Inc SJHP. Pretty spicy out of the little 4 inch barrel. I greatly prefer S&B SJHP. Little softer shooting, though not by much, and is a great compromise between Plinking and Self Defense ammo. I will gladly sacrifice 200 FPS velocity for a lower cost ammo that provides more rounds for the cost. Ammo Inc costs almost double what S&B does without much benefit to it. Course, I don't own a .44 Rifle, just the Redhawk. Even so, I was hitting a Torso Target out to 75 yards about every other shot. With how massive Rehawk sights are and the distance, that isn't atrocious accuracy. As for under 25 yards, I got about a 2 inch group at 25 yards.

    Handloaders can get around 2100 fps with h110 in rifles with a 210 grain speer gold dot. Don't sleep on the 44 mag for deer hunting. It's a 100+ yard gun for sure with the right loading.

    Most commercially available 44 magnum soft points are designed to perform out of long barreled (7inch or greater) revolvers and optimized for rifles, they will not expand out of 4 inch barrel revolvers like my smith and wesson model 69 , also this particular ammo was fireball city out of my gun !!!!!. on a side note I gotta get me one of those ruger 44 carbines

    This was an interesting and informative video. Thank you. I have a marlin 1894 in 44 mag from '79 with the infamous micro thrive rifling, a 1:38" twist, and a 20" barrel. I've shot the 180 gr Remingtons and although they were fun to shoot, they shot more of a pattern vs. a group. This same rifle would shoot 225 gr and 240 gr ammo into 3.5" - 4" groups at 100 yards regardless of brand. I'm not sure if it was the micro-groove rifling causing the problem, a slow twist rate (vs. the standard 1:20" inch twist for most 44 mags), or both.

    Hickok45 had mentioned that in some 44 caliber rifles or pistols they would need 431, and as I said he mentioned that the bullets were tumbling maybe this is the problem not the velocity but it's the tightness of the boar. My Smith & Wesson 44 it likes to have 429 thank you great video

    • @masonoutdoors_masonleather
      @masonoutdoors_masonleather  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Certainly a possibility, these bullets were not tumbling however, just grouping extremely poorly. Every bullet hit facing forward. They even managed to maintain their direction of travel until they nearly stopped and only torqued slightly near the end of penetration.

      Just shot a single round of the same ammo as in the video into water jugs (at 35 yards), and it penetrated all three and bounced off the bullet catch onto the ground. Retained weight was 173.1 grains.
      Shot out of a Marlin 1894CB w/20 inch barrel. Recorded velocity was mirroring what the video had. So the bullet holds up very well even at close range.

    As far as accuracy have you measured the bullet diameter? I have seen an instance where remington supposedly put .308 bullets in .303 ammo. The ammunition business has been up in the air for the past 4 or so years causing untold numbers o f problems. Measure those bullets and see if the actually fit your bore.

    • @masonoutdoors_masonleather
      @masonoutdoors_masonleather  Před 3 měsíci

      I really doubt bullet diameter is the issue, I posted a comment describing the almost certain reason for poor accuracy with this load.

    • @masonoutdoors_masonleather
      @masonoutdoors_masonleather  Před 3 měsíci

      After further research, it is absolutely due to the rifling twist rate. The 96/44 was purpose designed for heavier bullets. Yours likely was too.

  • @WayStedYou
    @WayStedYou Před 3 měsíci

    extra velocity and shorter 180 grain projectile should be more stable not less stable than the 240 grain, it might be a smaller width projectile so not engaing the rifling properly, like a .429 instead of .430 or .431 getting proper purchase on the rifling to spin it.

    Remington made a 180 JHP like that in the 1980s. Saying it was hot is an understatement. The fireball was visible, and LARGE, day or night. I set a comforter, I was using it to rest my wrists on a concrete bench, on fire in only 3 shots from a 4" Mod.29!
    Fiocchi is supposed to make a 180 that cooks as well.
    If I can find a good deal on them both, Rem and Fiocchi, I will give them a try. If they aren't accurate, I can always use them as fire starters. (The Fiocchi 180 gr. 44 Specials are one holers at 50 yards from my rifles, but my low power scout scope and red dot are not great for 100 yard precision)
    As for twist, the shorter bullet will not need as fast a twist as a longer, but they may be destabilizing because of the hard jacket not forming tightly enough to your bore. It would be worthwhile to pull an unfired bullet from those you've tested and see what their actual diameter is.
