  • 12 Gauge Remington Slugger 1oz and 7/8oz Rifled Slugs ballistics gel test fired from a Mossberg 500 Retrograde pump action shotgun with 18 inch smooth-bore barrel.
    Range gear: masonoutdoors.com
    Leather gear: www.masonleather.com
All shots are fired from a distance of 50 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

Thank you. It's almost impossible to find in depth and useful tests on slugs. Please keep being the hero we need but don't deserve!!!

Hi Mr Mason…. I began shotgunning for deer in the early 70s and found 23/4 in shells were more than adequate to harvest deer with out that added recoil of a 3” shell and accuracy was equivalent to either shell ! My REM 870 18” barrel took dozens of deer over the years in upstate NY until rifle hunting was initiated! My favorite loads were Winchester double X or Federal in 1 oz slugs. Thank you for your video and data. Keep up the good work brother!😊

Just wanted to thank you for the effort and money that it takes to make these videos.

I have shot two deer with the 2.75" High Velocity 7/8 oz Slugger from an 18" barrel, (I know, not the same load, but the same projectile) and I am surprised by the lack of expansion in this get test. One of my deer, a four-year-old 4x4 whitetail, trapped the slug against its hide on the far side. The slug expanded to the size of a half dollar and was more disc than mushroom. The deer was quartering away at twenty-five yards and the point of impact was a little back, so it entered just behind the ribs and left the rib cage just behind the far shoulder without hitting any ribs. The second deer was a magnificent, mature whitetail buck at 15 yards. It was a classic, broadside double lung and I'd guess, by the exit hole, that slug expanded as well. My ammo was manufactured over ten years ago though, probably way over ten years, so perhaps the alloy was hardened over all the changes at Remington.

I have a 18" 12 GA and appreciate your videos. Really good 👍

  • @EW-ho6cm

So, the 2.75" slugs penetrated deeper than 220g 30-06.....impressive!

  • @wymonwatson1309

Try the federals, they shoot the best from my shotgun, they claim 1650 on their 1oz 2.75 loads, it would be interesting to see a comparison between the 2 brands.

  • @johnnorman7708

It has been reported that some Remington branded shotgun ammo has hit the market recently that is in reality rebranded Federal ammunition. Not sure how widespread across the brand this is. But it will likely make a difference in testing and how your gun shoots wherever it happens.

  • @guardianminifarm8005

Great example of these slugs. Thank you.

  • @cavemanjeff4251

Thanks for reviewing these sluggers, the 2 3/4 loads are most accurate in my pump benelli . I look forward to you trying the federals and hopefully the hornady american whitetail rifled slugs also. Federal makes a copper plated 'deep penetrator' load but unfortunately they load it to a lower velocity and it has not been accurate in my guns. Your ammo tests are very informative and entertaining, appreciate you donating your time, money, and shoulder.

  • @KennethPowell-kx3jt

    Thanks for another video!

  • @calebchristensen900

Great as always!! Do you plan on doing reviews on 20 gauge slugs?

  • @anthonyfairbanks2952

    Nice looking shotgun

  • @DonutVIP

Both Federal and remington performed pretty well out of a 22inch barrel smoothbore imp cyl/mod browning choke, i also have a fully barrel slanging sabot copper slug in 22inch also, bushnell 4x9 40mm scope for that barrel

  • @timsmith5837

I would be interested in the Federal Truball Deep Penetrator Load. The product number is PB127 DPRS. It is a 2 3/4" 1oz slug.

  • @haroldconner2645

    Thank you

  • @veroman007

Now that was a damned interesting test you did there. Well done. So for bear protection do you want the extra penetration or do you want the bigger wound channel on impact. Well done again.

  • @pikeman0357

Grew up in the 70's with a rem 870 they knocked the snot out of deer out to 70 yards ( northern mi. Swamps)

  • @peterschmidt2849

    Love these 🔥❤️‍🔥🇺🇸
