    In this video, we’re going to talk about the #1 vitamin deficiency behind migraines. Migraines can cause debilitating pain and hypersensitivity to smells, sounds, and light. They can also cause nausea and increase the impulse to vomit.
    Migraines can be genetic, but this doesn’t mean you have to live with them. You have to understand the epigenetic factors that can potentially help you override this genetic weakness.
    There is a connection between under-functioning mitochondria and migraines. This vitamin is involved with an enzyme that helps preserve the aerobic metabolism in your mitochondria. It also helps you build up glutathione.
    One of the earliest indications of Parkinson’s disease is the failure of the glutathione mechanism. If you don’t have enough glutathione, it can cause serious damage to your neurons.
    Riboflavin (vitamin B2) deficiency is the vitamin deficiency often involved with migraines. If you have a genetic problem in your mitochondria, you may need more vitamin B2. Vitamin B2 helps allow oxygen to work through the mitochondria.
    Try taking 400 mg of vitamin B2 to help prevent migraines. If you want to know how to get rid of a migraine if you already have one, try taking 100 mg of vitamin B2 every hour until your migraine symptoms are gone-but don't exceed 400 mg per day.
    Sodium deficiencies can also cause migraines. Consuming more sea salt can help. If vitamin B2 doesn’t provide migraine relief, you can also try ginger or turmeric.

    12 years ago I started taking ginger for migraines and it cures 95+% of my migraines. 1/8h of a teaspoon works for me, powdered and in capsules. I have been hospitalized for migraines, paralyzed temporarily, ocular, etc and it works like a charm.

    I have suffered with debilitating migraines since childhood and am now in my 40s. I finally began taking Migrelief which has B2, Magnesium and Feverfew. After 6 weeks of taking this along with fish oil and coq10 my migraines have almost completely diaapeared and the headaches i do get are not near as severe as they would usually be. Make no mistake my migraines were severe and debilitating... this has been a game changing miracle for me. There is also peer reviewed research that shows fish oil and coq10 have had positive impacts for migraine sufferers.

      Eh, coq10 is for high blood pressure which you might have it? That might need to fix your diet if that case is. Basically eat a lot of veggies, fish,fruits, and lean meats. You will be fine.

    Thank you thank you Dr. Berg. I have suffered from debilitating migraines since 2009 and vestibular migraines since 2021. I've had numerous conversations with my primary and also saw an ent. I have been given prednisone about every two months to control my issues to a point that i could function. I ordered a b2 supplement and I could tell a difference within a few hours of taking it. The pain on the side of my head over my ear was gone. I can not express how much this advice has significantly improved my quality of life.

      Dairy products were exact cause of mine. I suffered insane migraines till I became 18 old. Only when I started living on my own and eat what I want, I realized my migraines were almost gone. I spent years going trough hospitals and different treatments. None of so called "health specialists" could find the cause. I had to figure it out on my own.

      I almost never get migraines since I started taking 500 mg magnesium before bedtime, in 2011. I also had to dump dairy, as it puts me in histamine hell if I eat any. Thank goodness for all the wonderful dairy substitutes in the stores now.

    Fasting has helped me keep insulin at a normal level. I found I used to snack on glutenous foods before bed. I would wake up with awful tunnel vision and migraines. Fresh food and veggies in the diet is a must.

    I definitely will try this. My daily chronic migraines are genetic, hormonal, and atmospheric. Most remedies work for a little bit, but then stop working.

      I am same way. I tried DIM capsules but the rollercoaster dive of hormones triggered more migraines. The capsules may have been too much DIM for me. I see Amazon has a cream DIM i may try as it appears to be a lower dosage.

    I suffered from regular migraines for the first 25 years of my life. I was told it was genetic. I was given pills. Loads of stuff that didn't work. You know what it turned out to be? Muscles. Yup. The migraines were caused by my habit of sitting for hours everyday. Basically, I had created tension in my shoulders and neck, which made muscle tissue there swell. This inflammation of the muscles put pressure on the nerves in my neck and shoulder, which gave me horrific migraines and regular headaches for the first 2/3 of my life.
    Yet, it turned out to just be muscles. I switched from sitting at the computer to standing; and I also started practicing certain Qigong routines. No more headaches. The whole experience has shown me that a significant portion of human pain actually comes from physical muscle inflammation. We don't give our muscles enough credit; they play a HUGE role in our physical well-being.

    My mom had headaches since her childhood, she started massaging her head with warm olive oil twice a week, and also put warm oil in her nose and ears before sleeping, she is free from headaches now and doesn't need to apply oil, she applies once in a while now.

    I have started taking ginger and noticed my headaches dissapear. I noticed that taking too much ginger can cause breathlessness though.

    Thank you, Dr Berg, I love your videos which are wonderful. I wish to share my experience with migraines, which I had since I was 15 years old. My symptoms were very debilitating and on a few occasions I had to be taken to hospital for pain relief, but since the mid 1980's, after I had a series of 5 acupuncture sessions with my doctor, and after I read a 'migraine cure' book written by a US professor, I came to understand that some people who have migraines have a condition where their body produces too much insulin, which then lowers the blood sugar to a very low level. (after they eat a high sugar food like chocolate for example). Although I find that it's still ok to eat a little high sugar food, but to prevent the extreme insulin reaction I need to drink half a glass of water, which dilutes the sugar, and it always works for me. Now on the very rare occasion, perhaps once a year, that I may have the start of a migraine, with vision aura disturbance, I immediately drink one whole glass of water and I also eat one small candy to lift up the blood sugar back to normal again, and this always works within 20 minutes to reverse the migraine and prevent it from developing. (Praise be to God)

    What helped my migraines was coQ10. I read a study where it says CoQ10 directly affects mitochondria. I will also try the B2 as well, since I still have migraines, but they are fewer and farther between and a lot less severe.

      I bought a multipack of mini salt shakers to keep in my purse and bags in case of not feeling when while fasting, and it is definitely saved me while out and about. I bought mine from Redmond but other companies may sell them too.

    When I switch to keto diet since 10 months now, strangely my migraine had vanished. You are correct Doctor Berg, it’s all about inflammation 😮
    When I had a crisis , I needed to be in the dark and i have à nausée, speach disorders and memory lost. It was horrible.
    I am very happy now that i adopted ketogenic diet and fasting in my daily routine, I don’t have to worry about this. Thanks for all your life saving médical advices.

    I’ve been suffering with migraines for over 20 years! But at some point I started going to the gym a lot!! Then my migraine went away for at least 10 years! Then it came back unfortunately. So I’ll try the vitamin B +.. Have no doubt that it will help! Thanks Dr Berg 🙏🏾❤

    My mom used to get migraines one week exactly (7 days) before she got her period . When she went through menopause , the migraines disappeared . When I was in my early 20’s I got them too, every few months . And in winter when we got a Chinook here , I’d get another migraine . Once I passed 25, the migraines went away for good .

    I love your content and how much your focus is on helping people long term, not just pushing another drug as pharmaceutical sales reps get doctors to do.
    *HOWEVER* please change the format. Tell us what it is, and then explain how it works. The constant repeating of “this vitamin does this, this vitamin does this other thing” like a used car salesperson trying to set the hook.

    This is good info! Probably every symptom of dis-ease in the body is related to a nutrient deficiency along with toxic build up of some sort leading to mitochondrial suppression. It is good to know how what specific nutrients need to be increased in order to resolve the dysfunction! Most lab work cannot really identify correctly what we are lacking nutrient wise, mainly because people differ on how well they assimilate a nutrient constituent. For example, you could show you have plenty of serum D3 in your blood test, but if your D receptors aren't operating well, then it is not being utilized by the body. Maybe there will be some types of tests where we could actually see within the cell, someday?

    Hello Dr. Berg, thank you for all your amazing knowledge. I particularly am thankful for this info, since I suffer from migraines since the age of 19, am I'm now 38. I see a neurologist and I take different medications..idk if they are unaware of the fact that it's genetic and a deficiency in b2, riboflavin in the mitochondria..but it seems they need to be educated more. Also, I saw another comment someone left "A cured patient is a lost customer" is scary but I'm sure true in some way.
    I checked your store for this vitamin, I don't think you have it. Would there be a specific brand you recommend?

    I've been a migraine sufferer for decades. The last few years, I would get several per month. But I stopped getting them about 6 months ago and was wondering why. But now I think I know. For the past several months, I've been drinking a cup of fresh ginger/turmeric tea each morning (equal parts of each root). That has to be why I haven't been getting the headaches any more!

      Hopefully this gets to both Patty and Susan. I finely slice 1/2 cup of fresh ginger root and 1/2 cup of fresh turmeric root. Then add it to 1 qt. of boiling water. Simmer for 30 minutes then remove from stove top and let sit for several hours. It will be super-concentrated.
      You can put 1/4 cup of this "tea" in a mug and add some honey then fill the cup up with regular water. But because I'm a freak, to that 1/4 cup of tea, I add 1/4 cup aloe vera juice, almost 1/8 cup apple cider vinegar, juice from 1/2 of a freshly squeezed lemon, 1/8 tsp. of cinnamon and 1/8 tsp. of cayenne pepper. And because I'm a superfreak, I add vanilla whey protein powder, unflavored collagen powder, creatine and psyllium husk powder. The vanilla protein powder makes it good enough so you won't puke!

    I got my first migraine at around 11or 12 years of age. Usually connected to my period. They were so debilitating. If I took medication after a certain point it was useless because my stomach stopped digesting and then I would get sick.
    The throbbing would build and build and vomitting was a relief.
    This would happen 3 or 4 times and then after about 8 hours the migraine would pass and I would feel dreadful.
    I'm 47 now and I rarely get a migraine, thank God.
    Most important thing is to make sure you always have your remedy with you whether it's ginger or pain relief.

    i had severe regular migraines for age 14 to 23, temporary visual aura, loss of sensation in face and hands, uncontrolable projectile vomiting and of course excruciating headache, id have them maybe 6-8 times a year would last 24-48hrs, for me they completely went away when i stopped eating store bought pasteurized Holstein dairy, I've experimented pretty thoroughly, i can eat raw sheep, goat and a2 jersey dairy without an issue but when ever i slip up (which is rare to never now a days) and eat something with "cheap generic store bought dairy" in it ill have a migraine a day or 2 later, nothing else seems to trigger them for whatever reason, no store dairy = no migraines for me

    I was at my Dr this week as my left eye went all blurry for a couple of hours, totally out of nowhere and with no other symptoms. He asked if I experience migraines and apparently they don't even always come with pain. This video opens up an interesting avenue for me to consider as I work through this issue.

    This is true, Dr Berg. I used to get migraines with aura occasionally and once I've switched to healthy Keto while taking Vit B2, Magnesium and other supplements following your advice, the frequency and intensity of migraines have reduced significantly since I've found your channel a couple of years ago. Love how you explain the different chemical reactions involved in how human body works. Thank you so much for your helpful content 🙏🏻

    I first had a terrifying migraine when I was in my 20s. I suddenly had a big black blob in the middle of my vision. I wondered if Ihad somehow y looked at the sun.. that was crazy, of course I had not. Then I thought "stroke!" I called a doctor I knew wholistened and said "migraine aura." he was right. I went on to have migraines with flashing light auras and other symptoms but never horrible headaches. Here's the good news: All my migraine symptoms went away after I began taking high dose B complex and other supplements - including magnesium. ( Dr. Berg has posted youtubes about the mag/migraine connection before... magnesium profoundly helped mine).

    For the past 5 to 10 years (I am 71), I increasingly got headaches during the night. They would start around 2 to 4 AM, and not even coffee would mitigate them. They were not migraines per se, but they were bad. They occured about 2 to 4 X per week. About 6 weeks ago a friend who is a health nut suggested that I take an B complex vitamin simply for my general health; so I purchased a bottle and a good nature store. Little did I expect that my headaches would disappear, but after a couple of weeks it suddenly dawned on me that "hey, no headaches". In the past month, I have had only one night-time headache, and the B-Complex, IMO, is the most likely explanation for the cessation of my headaches. BTW: I take the B complex with my supper.

      I have exactly the same problem... during the night 2-4am. When I get up, walk around or watch TV in the middle of the night, it goes away usually after 1 hour.
      Are you saying, that you take B-Complex vitamin every evening, and how much... can one overdose on B vitamins?
      Strange, my neurologist did not know that... but incompetence among doctors is the reason we patients must educate ourselves.

      @@dee468 Brand: Solaray; "High Potency B-Complex"; Chewables (taste like a sweet-tart). They are easy to chew and they are fairly large. I bite one in half and take the half with supper. I purchased them at a local health and nature store. FYI: I also purchased a bottle of NOW (brand), combo D-3 and K2 capsule, but I had been taking D-3 and K2 separately for over a year so I do not think this purchase explains the cessation of my headaches. I did not mention this, but I also noticed that my need to urinate twice a night has decreased to one or none per night. This too was an abrupt change, but I did not mention it in my original comment. BTW: the one night that I did get a headache might have (not sure) been caused by having a liqueur on ice cream for my dessert after supper. I am avoiding doing that again.

    I found that 25mg is my sweet spot. Also taking vitamin B1 with vitamin C at night helped very much!

    After a sudden increase in migraine frequency I started taking 400mg of riboflavin daily, along with visiting a chiropractor regularly and went 8 months without having a single one. I finally got one about 2 weeks ago and it was the weakest migraine I've ever had, didn't even need to take anything for it. From my experience it works!

    Interesting. I’m prone to migraines and also crave lemons with salt. I worry that I’m consuming too much salt sometimes, but I always feel better after eating them. My migraines tend to be triggered by changes in weather, not diet.

    OMG!! this makes so much sense!! I get cluster headaches which is somewhat similar to migraines just worse and learned that deeply inhaling pure oxygen at the onset of the headaches knocks it out. It changed my life!! No more heart harming meds!! Now hearing this about B2 and its effects on oxygen and the body makes it make sense.

    I know a 90 year old lady who would have arthritis and was wearing patches for the pain. This lady told me that when she started taking turmeric everyday, after 2 years all her pain went away. She no longer wears patches she takes Turmeric. She said she can go to Walmart and walk around and shop with no pain now!!!!! So now I take turmeric and so far I noticed a difference.

    I used to get migraines when I was eating a high carb diet. No not at all. What you said about b vitamins getting deficient with carbs is right. I didn’t increase my B vitamins I just stopped eating so many processed carbs. Now I I’ve lowered my carb intake significantly

    During the pandemic I had migraines, ironically I started eating organic pasture raised nitrate free sugar free bacon with my eggs for breakfast and I noticed a drop in my flare up. Maybe theirs B2 in pig 🐷. Thank you Dr. B

    I was misdiagnosed my entire younger life until I was 45. Then I finally found a doctor who put me on Flunarizine. It was life changing. I'm 62 now. I have a more rare type of migraine, that is 24/7 headache, tinnitus, visual aura, and olfactory hallucinations. I also get migraine seizures a few times every year. My doctor stopped at the meds and didn't go any further investigating, but I am a health nut, so I tried seeing exactly what is wrong with me. To the best that I can tell, I have what is called Mast Cell Migraine. The Mast Cells are producing too much Histamine which causes inflammation and the continuous migraine symptoms. Whenever I take an antihistamine such as Claritin, my headache and tinnitus drop in severity by 80%. I can't take Claritin every day, so I have been experimenting with higher than regular doses of B1 and B2. I'm happy to see that your video also mentions B2. I will try 400mg. Thanks Dr Berg.

      External sources can trigger histamine release (allergies). You could be allergic to something in your environment or diet. Their is a reason for your body’s reaction

      ​@@Walkeranz True! One of the biggest offenders in that arena is corn. It's crazy how it's basically made its way into everything on the grocery store shelves, right? That's why they always say, "shop the perimeter." Whole foods only. Forget the processed garbage in the center aisles. It's basically cancer in a box.

      @@Walkeranz - I have had the migraines my entire life. So unless the environment is "earth" that won't be it. :)
      I have lived in multiple cities and more than seven different houses in my life so far. My diet has differed completely multiple times in my life, I'm currently on a high protein muscle building diet. I still have migraines.
      I did have severely bad asthma as a child in the 60's 70's, and had years of weekly immune system injections when I was really young, so this could be a side effect of all of those drugs.
      I have done a lot of research into this. Mast Cells can Activate and produce Mediators all on their own, it doesn't require "an allergic reaction" for Mast Cells to produce histamine. I never get a severe headache triggered by anything, and the seizures are random, no triggers.

    This is so frustrating, I’ve been trying riboflavin for several years and it doesn’t help. It started when a doctor (yes, a doctor) told me research show butterbur helps migraines, so I found a supplement called Migra-Eeze that has butterbur, but I noticed it also had riboflavin. Over the years I learned more that butterbur extract has to be processed in a specific way to be helpful rather than harmful, so I abandoned it and just stuck to riboflavin B2. No discernible improvement at all.
    Also regarding ginger, it’s my go to when I start getting a migraine because of the nausea but I still get sick as a dog and puke every single time, i.e. ginger doesn’t seem to help at all.
    Glad these remedies work so well for some, but it’s not this simple for everyone.

      Same for me none of those supplements helped. For me I decided one day to cook bland zero sodium and for the first time in more than two weeks I did not have a migraine. So to test after a couple weeks I added salt a little at a time I prepared my meals and once I hit that salt level the migraines returned. So now I know the tolerable level of salt so I do not have to eat bland food. Also garlic, onions and cinnamon in high doses trigger migraines for me.

      You may have an MTHFR gene defect. If you do, you need B9 (folate) along with B12 and B6. Look into the gene defect and get tested to see if you have it. Thorne has a methyl-Guard vitamin that is wonderful!

    Hey, can cod liver oil or beef liver capsules be taken while on a prolonged fast? You have mentioned it is crucial to consume electrolytes and vitamin B but I'm not sure on these. The reason I would supplement with beef liver is for the Vit B. Thanks!

    Dr. Berg, I love watching your informative videos. I've had migraines most of my life and I am on migraine meds. I've been taking them with Magnesium Oxide and it helps (meaning it's better than nothing). I wanted to start back on Vitamin D. I've just started your D3 & K2 Vitamin Dietary Supplement. So if needed, I will have to add B2 Riboflavin to my list. Any recommendations on which one that's most effective? Thanks!

      I had migraine for 5 years. It was a daily thing. My recommendation would be grass finished beef liver. I would leave the liver in milk over night and fry it with onion, garlic, olive oil, slice of butter and a spoon of coconut oil. I add some salt and pepper as well. I eat about 80g threes a week. I did not notice it, but migraine decreased drastically within the first week. Of course not everyone likes liver so capsules are also an option but I don't think it's that cost effective. Another suggestion might be reviewing your bed. If it is 8 years or older or just a cheap bed I recommend trying a new one. Removing the pillow also seems to help. But that's more of a person to person thing from what I can gather from my clinical experiences.

      I have been eating beef liver for about 3 years now. Haven't had a migraine for a long while now and I noticed a increase in energy and memory. Whenever I feel weird the usual cause is that I just forgot to eat liver for that week.

      ​@@noonr4741thank you for the info. I've heard of eating liver and it grossed me out thinking about it😂. I was even contemplating on the capsules, but still iffy on that too. I know sugar was a major part and I've cut out on sodas and candy / chocolate. Basically any added sugar is a 🚫 for me. I can occasionally drink juicy juice since it has no added sugars and be fine like a glass but it can add up and cause the same effect if one is taking it multiple times daily /weekly. I eat pretty healthy and still hard to find out if certain foods are triggering the migraines. I drink water mostly.
      As for the bed, I'm in a new home so evening thing is new.

      Magnesium oxide is the hardest form on your stomach; it can be used as a laxative. Might want to research other forms of, particularly forms that can cross the blood brain barrier. They are more expensive but might be worth it if you can afford.

    I suffer with migraines. I have since I was 10 years old before my period started at 11. My Mom & Grandmother have heavy bleeding & pains, I inherited it. But only my Great Grandmother had migraines. I started birth control at 17 to combat symptoms. After I got Covid first of the year 2022. My body has been dealing with inflammation & my migraines have gotten 10x worse. Hormonal is getting better since I switched BC pills. But they are Debilitating & I'm definitely going to try B2!

      I got my friend taking a probiotic and she says about 3 months later, her menstrual migraines are much pretty much gone. Nothing else has ever worked for her.
      (It'll also help get your gut back into good shape after Covid!)

    I used to have migraines, part of the vision would blank out then zigzags appeared. They always appeared around menstruation times. I was told to takw B12. When i stopped periods so did my migraines i put it down to hormones. Not had them since what does that tell you.
