    Why did Dan Harmon say that 'Vindicators 3' was, "the worst episode of Rick and Morty ever"? It has to do with Dan Harmon's attachment to the Hero's Journey, a narrative structure that is the foundation of most stories; a structure that Vindicators 3 breaks.

    I just watched season 3 today. As I watched this episode, I was actually impressed that Morty didn't try to change Rick in his usual whiney way. I consciously concluded that Morty had developed some type of twisted acceptance of drunk-Rick's behavior (like a parent that constantly cleans up their child's mistakes but hasn't kicked them out of the house).
    Seeing Morty spend almost half the episode just going through the motions illustrated, to me, how important Mortys are in Ricks' existence.
    I can only speak for myself; I enjoyed this episode, it was a wonderful change of pace from the expected pacing.

      The main story wasn't about Rick and Morty in that episode. It was about Beth and Jerry.
      How they started the day normal, but then they found out they could see what their lives could have been with the "goggles". They saw that, and found out their own lives would be better in some ways if they didn't got together. This makes both of them a little sad, so they think about leaving each other.
      Later in the episode, they find out their happieness doesn't come from having everything you want in the world, but to share a life with another person, and making the best out of what they can get.

  • @DisneyMagicDreamer85
    @DisneyMagicDreamer85 Před 5 lety +80

    Personally I like the episode since I think the whole episode was a jab at the superhero genre itself. It's unrealistic to believe heroes aren't human in some way and real heroes don't wear jackets or sign autographs. Morty is the typical fan that wants to emulate his favorite superhero team but he has to learn that no one person or team are without their flaws and that can be an unsatisfying lesson to learn.
    I'm more interested in the journey Rick takes throughout this episode. First he's totally annoyed at this idea of being with this group again, even more annoyed at Morty's idolatry of them and becomes so hurt by Morty's declaration of the Vindicators as his heros that he goes off and gets totally drunk. It's interesting to me that we see Rick act out because he deeply wants Morty to value him.
    As Morty solves trap after trap, suddenly Rick starts to see just how much crap Morty has had to deal with because of Rick and it gives him a moment to realize that in truth it is Rick that would be lost without Morty.
    To me the only unsatisfying part were the things that went unsaid. Morty never tells Rick that he values Rick as his grandfather and Morty is unable to see Rick's drunken actions as being a cry for love, not to NoobNoob whom Rick doesn't remember afterwards, but to his grandson, his partner, Morty.
    But life is like that, not full of heroes and villains, just people trying to make sense of it all.

It’s satisfying when Rick walks away from the consequences of his action because we knew there wasn’t any chance he was going to become a better person anyways. It’s cynical but it feels more genuine then giving everyone positive character development every single episode.

Made Rick look like a clutz and really selfish. Since he fecks up a second time. It would have been better if they had just faked Morty's Death. Then everyone went back to normal. I mean it is a good episode and by not doing it the way they did, it would of ruined the rest of the season, but at the same time it kind of made rick look more like a super villain. So to me it was still the worst episode, they could of left that timeline for another reason like it was the only way to reverse the virus after they faked his death because it felt like a massive flaw in Ricks character. After this Ricks character seem to get worse and worse, almost like they are trying to see how evil they can make Rick while people still like him. Ha.

    I didn't have a problem with any of this, really. Not every episode has to be structured exactly the same, because then it truly does become predictable. The end was subjective in leaving the audience to wonder if it really was Noob Noob Rick made that ride for, or Morty, revealing a deeper attachment to him than the audience thought. It was also the first time Rick was in a situation where he had to react and perceive his drunk self as he appeared on camera, which is something he's never done before. I thought it was all very entertaining. This is why I'm happy to not be a creator of the things I love. I'm not anal about it, I can take it as I see it.

If the Vindicators had gotten the answer wrong, or had just failed any of the challenges (how were they going to guess Israel when they'd never heard of it?) then the neutrino bombs would have killed everyone, including Beth and Summer. It makes absolutely no sense for Rick to do that.
      We also know that Rick and Morty weren't supposed to even go on the adventure, as seen when Rick reaches into his lab coat to get the portal gun and leave, only to realize "Shit..." it's not there. This would mean that he was willing to gamble the lives of everyone he knew except Morty on the Vindicators solving all his puzzles. Not only is the episode poorly paced, it doesn't even make sense.

      I agree with this. If every story follows the same journey, they do get a bit predictable. Now what I like is not having to hear some stupid fking origin story about these heroes. You just kind of accept that they are the "Justice League" or "Avengers" of Rick and Morty. I also love how they are fallible to the point of where they actually kill each other and all because Rick is so smart that if you take away his discretion, he completely ruins the Vindicators. Rick isn't a good guy and that's why this works. And just when you think that he's going to show that he really does care about Morty on some level in this particular episode, he doesn't. It's predictable to some degree, but it's awesome still. It shows that what Morty lacks in scientific intelligence in this show, he makes up for by being able to mostly read Rick.

    I thought this episode was actually pretty good because it broke that typical "Hero's Journey" cycle we see. With Morty going on so many of them, obviously he would lose his naïveté at some point and this seems like it's just Morty's overarching character growing more and more sick of Rick's shit. He gets that Rick is the smartest person in the universe and that things like superheroes are probably overrated, but he wants to hang on to sentiments like it because they're fun and hopeful. But incidents like these where Morty quickly gives up on those ideas don't show him "changing" mid episode in my opinion, rather just reluctantly putting down the facade. He's done this song and dance so many times with Rick that by the time he realizes Rick has set up this game to knock the Vindicators of their pedestal he's already resigned himself to what he knows is the inevitable outcome. His boredom with Rick's constant reckless use of his intellect is only natural and shows Morty growing as his own independent character

    • @SeanStrife

    • @MusicMakesMeNormal
      @MusicMakesMeNormal Před 6 lety +1

      Ninja Bacon I agree that it's good to see Morty grow as a character, but I think that could've been achieved while still sticking to the Hero arc (so Rick would still be annoying, but in the end, he is also a little bit wrong). I mean, the morty growth (ew lol) wasn't enough to make the episode entertaining. The other characters were still boring and seemed more like an excuse to shit on superhero movies (which isn't any more interesting than the movies themselves). However, if Rick eventually saw that the heroes, while very imperfect, could in fact achieve a little change in their corner of the universe, that would've been a surprising turn for ricks character. I dunno, in the past, Rick and morty has balanced between cynicism and challenging that very same cynicism, but these days, it's pretty much just cynicism. And they're justifying it using intelligence. To me, that's just lazy. Anyways, that's just my two cents. I am glad you pointed out the change in Morty's character. Before I read your comment, I didn't fully notice it happening.
      (Also, you said it's good to break the typical story structure every once in awhile. I agree, but in this case, I think the story structure would've worked better)

It's fun, it does break the typical story arc, but sometimes changing it up is satisfying so we're not fatigued with a predictable story telling model. It Morty was basically useless and rick weird jealousy/hatred that he gets for Morty attention should of been the focus not the vindicators. If anything this could have been a nice parallel to the killing joke that could of shown the heroes going crazy instead of them already being "evil" to begin with.

    I dunno, it seems to fit the formula pretty well. Maybe the beats I picked up are off, but going by the story of Vindicators 3.
    1. The hero is in 'comfort', helping Rick clean up an adventure or mess.
    2. The hero wants something; Morty cashes in on the free adventure to join the Vindicators.
    3. The hero enters an unfamiliar situation and embarks on a new adventure with said vindicators and pissy grandpa after finding out the group went off on adventures without him because of his pissy grandpa.
    4. Adaptation; dealing with adventure and pissy grandpa while trying to maintain decorum between the two parties.
    5. Get what they want, Vindicator adventure happens until they find what Rick did.
    6. Heavy price, said pissy grandpa ruins the entire thing and gets Morty's dream team killed in supervillain fashion.
    7. Return to the familiar situation. Morty, just like in the beginning, is once again helping clean up his grandpas mess.
    8. The shrine to Noob Noob solidifies the idea in Morty's mind that his grandfather cares so little about him and so much more about being right and being a sore loser that he would literally risk everyone's lives to prove that lines of morality are grey and people are grey, but not even to prove it to his grandson, but to someone he just met with no connection other than thinking a joke he made was funny. Then, at the end of it all during what should've been a celebratory moment of getting out of nearly dying once again, the crushing reality that his grandfather, the architect of his recent traumatic experience, can't even remember who he did it for.
    Now, idk about you, but that would change me forever.
    Also it was good episode because even though Rick was plastered all over it, the episode itself was more about Morty and those are always good episodes.
