Dr. Wong is hands down the only character in this series who qualifies as an actual rival or nemesis for Rick specifically because she is not a villain/enemy. He doesn't discuss problems he incinerates them. Because he *loses* when he has to discuss them. I would like to see more of Wong and maybe Rick gets some character growth but I know the show's creators hate sustained plotlines and prefer episodic content even though the arcs in this series have thus far been vastly superior to the episodic content.
If Nothing in life matters, then why even live but here Wong gives us some real truths, its a choice to believe that. its a choice to quit and its a choose to keep going. Honestly this is some perfect advice and I love it
I feel like the end of the show will be in part due to Wong breaking down Rick’s problems and allowing him to finally give up this sci-fi stuff to live with his family like he’s wanted to do since the start
That's what he needs from her. He's always responded well to being called out for his nonsense, but the next step that I'm sure Wong was about to get to is finding an alternative solution to the problem his nonsense is responding to (in the case of the dumb puppets, communication)
Her monologue about the hard work of self-care has lived rent free in my head for years. That repairing, maintaining and cleaning aren't an adventure, they're just mundane tasks we have to be willing to commit to as an assertion against chaos and sickness, and that we all have the freedom to choose the path to well being or the path to decay.
What I love about Dr. Wong is the ironic aspect of how she beats Rick: She’s not trying. She’s not trying to outsmart him, she’s not trying to challenge him that she’s more, she doesn’t try to present herself as something Rick needs to topple, she simply is doing her job, and as simple as it is, this is something Rick IS NOT used to. Rick lives in danger every moment and gets so much ego and fun knowing that he can topple any threat becuz every thing that comes after him wants to be a threat to him becuz he’s this perfect asshole that needs to die but Wong doesn’t talk to him in that mentality, she talks to him like a simple person, a normal person with problems. Which Rick thou he tries to denie and blow off, he really appreciates it inside
Another thing is that Dr wong doesnt fear rick at all, she knows that if he kills her it will only prove that shes right. And rick absolutely hates being wrong
i think shes really the reality check character everyone needs. i've seen a lot of people adopt ricks personality because hes one of the main characters and he's adored but he really is a toxic piece of shit and people idolize him because they find him "realistic" when he's just overly pessimistic and harsh about everything. you dont want to be a rick, and it doesnt make you a better or smarter person because you think the world sucks and trying to be him is going to make you miserable. he's just a character that was made up by people. i'm not really trying to get at anything here but all i'm saying is i think people take his character too seriously
A bit late here, but the big thing about GOOD edgy characters is that they all have one thing in common: They are suffering. They are suffering from a combination of bad luck and their own actions after the fact, caught in a cycle that they can't seem to escape. People who want to be an edgy character don't want to be in pain. They want the cool aesthetic that comes with being a pain-filled mess, without all the baggage. They want people to pity them, but don't want to be pitiful. They want to be the guy who has all the power, not thinking of how much he sacrificed to get there. Including his own humanity.
There are far too many people who idolize and think themselves Rick, but fail to see that the show is demonstrating his absolute dysfunction. Which is why she is so great!!
you know what I find Ironic? Beth is the one who wanted the family to go to therapy, everyone else was reluctant. Or in ricks case, literally willing to turn into a vinegar doused vegetable dildo than go. But as soon as they all get there, in one way or another, it all actually seems to help them in some way, and they all get into it... EXCEPT for Beth. She starts getting more frustrated the more Morty/Summer open up. (All this probably because she was secretly hoping the therapist would side with her and gang up on the rest of the family in hopes for moral psychological control of some sort). and when Dr.Wong does her analysis pitch, Beth just tells her "Fuck You".
As someone who went to family therapy as a child, quite often the visit is desired by one or both parents after they’ve failed to make their child develop an unhealthy obedience complex, in the hope that the therapist will just tell their children that they need to listen to their parents more. It’s usually a last Hail Mary attempt to regain an unhealthy level of control over their children, and if it starts to actually make the family more healthy, the original parent won’t like it anymore.
@@RoundusMongusMaking the family more healthy requires parents to be accountable for their actions and words instead of waving the imaginary because “I’m your authority figure” wand to magically make your problems go away.
That's because she never wanted actual therapy for herself, she really was hoping that the therapist would take her side and help "discipline" everyone else in her family in some sort of sick, twsited way

Cause there was likely a factual reason as to why he turned himself into a pickle. She hadnt met rick fully then, and as she said, she isnt there to judge. She Met Jerry, and tbh.., its a Fucking jerry.
She called Jerry crazy to his face when he was acting infantile to get out of having to actually deal with their issues, she didn't pass judgement on Rick until she'd met him and once she did she knew better than to take an antagonistic stance - which is different from setting clear boundaries, which she also did, and wouldn't you know it? Rick actually respects that.
@@ZetsubouGintama Rick is as pathetic as jerry's tantrums. I love how whenever Dr.Wong makes a point and they see what she means there reactions are either mind blown and happy or they just give a face and curse like Beth 😂
Out of all the TV shows and movies that I've seen, Dr. Wong is probably the best description of what a good therapist and good therapy looks like. And to imagine that they still managed to make her funny without resorting to low level stereotypes about therapy and therapists is truly amazing. Either one of the writers has some therapy background (perhaps through education or personal experience) or they got someone to consult on the character of Dr. Wong. In either case, I absolutely love it.
Dr Wong literally unravel the Smith family the moment they walk in. she knew exactly what is wrong the first moment. her only problem is how to make them recognize the problem
"You don't shoot Batman in his Batman logo." Actually that's exactly what he wants you to do. The Batman logo is ment to be a target where his armor is the strongest. If he gets enemies to focus on it it will be less likely they will get a shot in that can actually do serious damage like on his face or between the plates of the suit.
Which is why you DON’T shoot there if you want your shots to do anything. It’s an obvious target that is not effected, just like calling rick old and ugly is pointless because he doesn’t care about that shit. That’s more what he was getting at
She's the Shaman to Rick's Wizard. Her Wisdom score is as high as his Intelligence score, and in certain situation being wise has more value than being smart.

Damn, this ending is AWESOME 😂😂😂, i love how they became like buddies and also that she calls him. The part where he realized he was making progress was so damn cool.
One thing I like about therapy is that you can experiment with your life with someone who has your perspective (if you learn not to lie to your therapist, which is something people struggle with). My therapist didn't make me feel judged when I told him about my secret problem. Instead, he helped me see how there was other solutions I could try if I wanted to without making me feel dumb or judged. It takes time and trial and error, but I'm not kidding when I say therapy really works.
The therapist is so calm about the fact that he can intergalactically travel through space and time, even though a ufo crashed into her office. How is she sane?
Even though ANY psychiatrist wouldn't lay everything out this quickly. Hurt people are very quick to deflect and unable to take the necessary accountability to heal. Wong has a very straight forward and concise psycho analysis on the entire Smith family. Wong is a superb psychiatrist.
I still cannot believe Rick and morty of all fucken shows gave probably the most accurate representation of a good therapist and when therapy is working
Probably the most wise character in the entire series. She’s the kind of therapist that everyone would want to have. Though Rick’s initial description of therapists as “agents of averageness” who just try to tell you what words have what meanings is true for many real life therapists, Wong is the exception
This makes me realize that Beth is probably the worst character in Rick and Morty or at least she was in season 3. She even attempted to murder someone and couldn’t even apologize. Rick would at least be able to do that.
I wish Rick had more sessions with Dr. Wong. It could be at the end of every 3 episode. He could go in messed up, get validation for his actions, the correction he needs and get cured that one day until he relapses in the next episode.
Dr. Linda: So, have you dealt with any... Supernatural things in your time as a therapist? Dr. Wong: Yes. The grandfather is an intergalactic scientist. Dr. Linda: Oh, well... Mine is God. Literally.
Beth was always a bit too insecure. Makes sense cos she has abandonment issues. @@kAY-yl5en , plus Wong is challenging all of it, which would naturally lead to someone being defensive. Wong is the consummate professional and one of the few people in the show that seems to be able to challenge Rick intellectually. If Rick were to actually respect her this would be seen as a huge threat to Beth... because she desperate wants that for herself.
@@naejimba the irony is, that Rick came to respect her after their interactions, especially in season 6 where you can see that Rick started going to therapy.

When she was first introduced she was an obvious self insert for the writer and made Rick act completely out of character, she got better with time and was funny despite never being a joke, and she genuinely helped Rick with egging him on to prove her wrong

i love the "therapist hands" she does to indicate she has a concern but in a nonconfrontational way. I'm a social worker and find myself doing it too lol

Rick's vulnerabilities are what makes him such an interesting character, like how he's willing to talk with Wong about his problems despite refusing to admit he has them
That was a robotic duplicate
@@mesiagamer5217that guys dead this is real Rick now
Okay can we mention how Wong kept the Smith family as clients-- even AFTER the rigged flaming chair? Therapists can and do fire clients for plenty of reasons and that would have been a very good one 😂I think Rick was kind of hoping so they wouldn't have to go to therapy anymore. She was smart enough to realize the installment of the flaming death-chair was his way of mentally taking control of the situation because he hates feeling emotionally vulnerable.
I think She realises they REALLY need her input and their probably much more interesting clients than 90% of her other work. A steady 200+ dollars an hour from a family who will likely be able to afford it if Ric is covering the bill (and charging him for any damage he causes to her office) is likely a contributing factor too.
Its worth considering these might all be different dr.wongs
"I'm better than this job" pretty sure she saw the smiths as a challenge, lol
@@Dracattacki actually don’t think that’s worth considering at all, even if it’s true, because it’s clear they’re invested in their relationship with her.
@@Dracattack doesnt make sense cause that means hitting a reset button every single time and you're stuck with reintroducing the same stuff over and over in a maddening loop.
The reason why Wong seems so insightful, is she is an expert in the human brain.
Rick is an expert at everything, making him less human, making it harder for him to feel and understand how to deal with human emotion.
Guess the main thing in life we need to really down is honestly stop looking for answers.
stop looking at the big picture
and do what we can in life
to make the best to our ability
Rick disassociates from his humanity and Dr.Wong makes him realize he needs it. Even if that annoys him shes usually right hence why he goes back
@@Dracattackthat's an excellent take on their dynamic!
Rick is also less of a scientist than an engineer-he doesn't care about the pursuit of truth, he cares about the results he can achieve.
Dr. Wong is much more of a scientist than Rick is, and she would never assert it to him, because that would be pointless self-aggrandizement. She wants to help people, while Rick wants to be seen as the smartest, coolest, most dangerous person in the room. That's an obvious sign of insecurity, whether you can do it or not.
Interesting to point that after Beth divorced Jerry,Beth became blaming her kids especially in the first therapy episode
Because like Rick, instead of admitting to her problems, she has to push and blame them on other people
@@alexlovelady8249 which wong suggests that shes gotta start being the bigger person and take the consequences of every mistake shes made basically exceeding better then rick and being her own person and I think it's the reason she loves jerry its cus jerry is his own person entirely (granted not the greatest) jerry doesnt have to prove y hes better cus he knows hes not he just sucks at life and that's how he lives with it

@@alexlovelady8249 exactly, we can even see him have minor successes like cooking, keeping bees, even writing a book, jerry is a normal guy in a chaotic world, and hes unironically held back because the rest of the family having insane standards due to ricks science nonsense, he would honestly be somewhat successful and probably wouldnt have even had his pathetic moments earlier in the series if his family encouraged him
If Nothing in life matters, then why even live
but here Wong gives us some real truths, its a choice to believe that.
its a choice to quit and its a choose to keep going.
Honestly this is some perfect advice and I love it

Can we talk about how Dr. Wong can stay patient and composed with Rick and Beth but even she can’t deal with Jerry’s nonsense.
I actually really like Dr. Wong and the type of dialogue/stories she creates when given screen time. She forces self inspection.
I like her to
What I love about Dr.
Well said!
i think shes really the reality check character everyone needs. i've seen a lot of people adopt ricks personality because hes one of the main characters and he's adored but he really is a toxic piece of shit and people idolize him because they find him "realistic" when he's just overly pessimistic and harsh about everything. you dont want to be a rick, and it doesnt make you a better or smarter person because you think the world sucks and trying to be him is going to make you miserable. he's just a character that was made up by people. i'm not really trying to get at anything here but all i'm saying is i think people take his character too seriously
Wow those are some really good words you got there and nobody seems to counter argue
Yeah, he's a fictional character, he's made unrealistic
And the authors didn't create him wanting him to be some guidance to people
There are far too many people who idolize and think themselves Rick, but fail to see that the show is demonstrating his absolute dysfunction. Which is why she is so great!!
@@Law-rence82 Exactly
I know a lot of counselors and therapists are meant to make you feel relaxed but Dr. Wong's voice is even more relaxing~
Because unlike the real situations this is acting and they have time to perfect the sound.
As someone who's been to Mental Health and I like her to be my therapist
Dr Wong is actually super cool/badass in her own way. To be able to read the situation of people with 100% accuracy is its own superpower O.O
you know what I find Ironic?
Yeah, but that "Fuck You" was metal af

You know, medias usually suck at representing therapy. But this is actually quite accurate.
Rick could genuinely benefit from seeing her regularly if he wasn’t too high and mighty to admit he needs therapy

She can play rick like a fiddle. Convinced the man to prove her method doesn't work and then got him to understand that it really was the kill move
Guess Wong is the only character who is smarter than Rick 🤣
In DnD terms, Rick is 30 Int 20 WIS, she is 30 Wis, 20 Int.

Even though ANY psychiatrist wouldn't lay everything out this quickly. Hurt people are very quick to deflect and unable to take the necessary accountability to heal. Wong has a very straight forward and concise psycho analysis on the entire Smith family. Wong is a superb psychiatrist.
Dr. Wong is an amazing character but has anyone looked at her door more carefully? Dude, how do you even think of specializing in that?
The fact that she stays in business suggests there's some demand for it
I honestly hope we see more of her 😂
I like that wong is the only human that really help rick out like dude had a really slow but good change in how he acts
I still cannot believe Rick and morty of all fucken shows gave probably the most accurate representation of a good therapist and when therapy is working

Did a white woman just tell a chinese lady that her real name is racist somehow?
Now that I think about it, Wong is pretty cool. I like how accepting she is of Ricks (As Jerry would put it) "Sci-Fi bullshit."
Probably the most wise character in the entire series. She’s the kind of therapist that everyone would want to have. Though Rick’s initial description of therapists as “agents of averageness” who just try to tell you what words have what meanings is true for many real life therapists, Wong is the exception
Dr. wong is my favorite character.
She is good, maybe she make believe that psychology is not a waste of time, sometimes
People have a way overblown view of physiologists. They are there to help you reflect on your own issues and fix them, not fix you themselves
I love Wong so much lol
I’m glad a lot of people hate her. It goes to show how immature they are.
This makes me realize that Beth is probably the worst character in Rick and Morty or at least she was in season 3. She even attempted to murder someone and couldn’t even apologize. Rick would at least be able to do that.
I had no idea what I wanted to do in university until I remembered Dr Wong lol.
She is one of the best characters of the show!

I wish Rick had more sessions with Dr. Wong. It could be at the end of every 3 episode. He could go in messed up, get validation for his actions, the correction he needs and get cured that one day until he relapses in the next episode.
By far the best character in the show
I love how she feels authentic and doesn't really question any weirdness coming from the family
I like how specifically she is informed and know about everything without anyone explaining what is going on

Beth was so insufferable in this
Beth was always a bit too insecure. Makes sense cos she has abandonment issues.
