Installing Dual Triple Tire Chains on AWD Plow Dump Truck

  • Today's video, #79, I install tire chains on the rear of my plow dump truck, an AWD 1981 GMC C7000. In a previous video, #75, I got the truck stuck in a massive record setting snow. I didn't have these chains on, and boy did I need them. So before the next storm, I made sure they were on and I was ready. These dual triple chains are not hard to put on the ways I've figured out. Right or wrong, it's what I do.

    Love your daughter's hat. Gravely makes a great mower. We had a two wheeled Gravely tractor that was a beast on our farm. Hand pull starting was always an adventure,

    I keep a 6x6 block in my truck for getting the tires off the ground to keep from using a jack. I just cut a slant in one side of the block to act as a ramp then just drive the truck up on the block. I only put chains on the outside tires tho. Probably just as easy with a jack when doing both tires.

    Never seen those type. I just had the type that you tightened on inside and outside wher you hook them. We use to feed two hundred head of cows. Chains got me out of many mud and snow hole. Many times we would feed one day without chains and the next day we would need them but of course we didn’t know that until we were stuck. Handi man jack

    Just a heads up, you’ve got the chains inside out. The “hook” part on the outer chain should be pointing out, or you’ll eat the sidewall of the tires.

    Hi,you have to spray some oil like old transmission oil on your truck frame and brake lines.I want to see how much better it should plow now.

      Actually, a little rust prevention would have gone a long way 30 years ago when this thing was out plowing the salty roads. A little far gone now to worry about it. And I've got another plowing video coming out next week. Thanks for watching!

      2nd the tranny or used motor oil.
      Ur right a lil late, but if U plan on keeping Elvis 4 Ur plowing, something now may slow down the rust some.
      In Ur Pre season check over pay attention 2 those juice lines they look like mine did B4 it sprung its leak.

      Unless your getting rid of it this summer it benifits you to spray some used tranny fluid under your worth saveing truck.

      @@mikeholubek4419 The problem with spraying used oil is it collects dust and makes for a big mess when I need to work on it. The truck will hold out of the 5 or so more years I need to use it. It doesn't see the road at all, so I don't really care if it rusts any more.
      Also, those lines are brand new. I just replaced them.

    I DROVE OVER THE SIERRAS ON I-80 IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA FOR TWENTY YEARS WITH A SEMI TRACTOR TRAILER AND NEVER JACKED MY TIRES UP TO PUT CHAINS ON.

      @@NorthForkHollow I'll give a vote of support for your method. Even if jacking up the axles of a semi can't be much fun, meaning that getting the chains on without jacking probably makes sense, I know that with a truck like yours (easy access to the axle) and in a situation where jacking is so simple, it's so much quicker and nicer to do it your way. Also worth noting is that most semi drivers use single chains, not doubles, and that means they don't have to deal with those alternately-spaced cross links which make it impossible to connect the chains reasonably tightly while the tires are solidly on the ground (you can only connect them loosely and then you must re-connect them a few links tighter after a few rotations). I've put dual chains on the rear tires of a drill-rig truck more times than I can count, and jacking up the wheels was the best way by far (of course it DOES help to have a truck with built-in corner jacks, so you could say we were cheating).
      I could mention that with that drill-rig truck, I always hooked the center chain first since that's the hardest one to reach and it's easier to get it connected at the proper length while it's still in a loose condition. Also, at least in off-road situations, a little bit of looseness of the final installation can be a good thing since it lets the chains can "migrate" some during use and not continually wear the tire in the exact same spots, but I think for roads, nice and snug is best.
      (I still think that's a mighty cool old truck).

      Yeah, they are big tires. They are 20" rims with huge sidewalls. 10.00x20 tires. A bunch of good old rubber there. Thanks for watching Joe!

    Brainiac why would you do this in the spring and have your truck ready working in the winter sucks you should have at least 4 yards of gravel in the back chained up and ready to go all hydraulics checked all belts checked it’s better spring then winter....lol
