  • Wild Card Wednesday! This week I'll show you how I like to install my tire chains. This is not the ONLY way to throw iron, but it is one way to do it. Check it out and if you have any hints of your own, please post them in the comments below. Thanks!

I have been trucking for 30 years and I wanted to show my son the right way to chain. He is 10 and you are the only one I found on you tube that put them on without moving the vehicle. I wanted him to learn how to do it when you are struck. Bravo to you Sir you are the best I have seen on here.

I have been trucking 40 years now. Some in the oil patch and hauling logs in the mountains of British Columbia Canada. I was watching a few vids on tire chaining. WOW! There are a lot of folks who should not give out instruction on this. You Sir 2 THUMBS UP. Everybody out there watch this video. It's a good one. Fit your chains to your tires, keep them tight and don't rely on bunggies. A well fitting tight chain will do far less damage to tires and body work.

It seems like it would be a good ideer to lay out a length of blanket the same size as the chains to roll them up with to keep them nice and oriented. Not to mention it might sit on top of the snow instead of dropping your chains into the white abyss of frostbite. You would probably need an ammo can for each but it seems like it would take a lot off hassle out of the process since they would unroll in an organized manner.

I've climbed a 15% grade glare ice that you couldn't walk on with diamond pattern chains.
They make a huge difference, I keep mine untangled and in separate bags. The ones I've got have self tightening cables. Not as heavy duty as yours but way easier to install.

Great video you covered everything and you can tell you have put on a few sets of chains'. I have been using chains on my Fords for 40 years (F350) and i am always amazed when I am the only one able to go in mud or snow because i have a set of chains. Hunting , snowmobiling , ice fishing. My dad said in the 40s and 50 there were not a lot of 4x4s a rear wheel drive dually with chains went pretty good in the bush.

I drive a truck and used to go to the Northwest a lot in the winter, so I'm no stranger to hanging iron.
Da nifty trick is to take a couple of 2x6s, maybe 18" or 2' long, lay the chains over them, and screw short 2x6s in between the crossbars of the chains leaving a gap for the crossbars to lay in. Cut a 45° or tighter angle on one end so that you can drive up on them, and make shallow saw cuts (like 1/8" or 1/4") on the incline for traction (ask me how I know). Put screws in the bottoms of them and leave them sticking out 1/4" to 1/2" so that the boards won't try to slide while you drive up on them.
Then when you have to put the chains on, lay the board down, lay the chains out on it, and drive up onto the boards. It'll take a lot of the slack out when you first put them on.
Most of all like Tyler said, practice when it's nice out. Practice, practice, practice.

Another nifty trick if you have onboard air or an air source, is to let a lot of air out of the tires, put the chains on, then pump the tires back up. They'll get much tighter that way.

  • @KelvinSmoke

My tip: winter, snow country, and full size spare? Put chains on spare in warm garage. Now you can put one chain on as fast as changing the wheel. Need two tires with chains? well you just put your chained spare on and now you can work away from the road and put chains on the now free wheel.(will still require tightening after driving a few hundred yards)

ive always found it way more beneficial to put the set of chains on the front instead of the back u have way more control (steering and braking) when compared to having them on the back obviously your best off having them on all 4 but if u only have one set in anycase great video thanks

When I turn my XJ (3" life, 31's) all the way, the tire rubs the (extended) brake lines if I don't have they pushed out of the way. A tire chain is surely going to hit my brake lines. What options do I have? I was thinking of using mini bungies to pull the brake lines out of the way.

My extended lines on the YJ will rub the tire at full lock if I don't pull them back out of the way too. I use a small length of elastic cordage that keeps constant tension on the brake line without hindering its movement during axle articulation. I have to replace them about once a year, but otherwise I've been happy with that solution.
