- For Police Officers, Sheriff's Deputies, Security Guards, and other public safety professionals learning to speak with people within the confines of the job requires lots of experience. Today we are going to talk about ways to cut down the amount of experience needed to master this valuable skill by giving the viewer a “leg up” on an important fundamental concept of interpersonal relationships.

New format. Let me know if you like it and if you have any suggestions for new videos.
I'm diggin it. But then again, i've always preferred the more formal "student" view for educational vids - especially when talking about abstracts or complicated multi-faceted topics where visuals become very helpful.
+GraymanTactics Glad you like it!
There's a time and place for each format. This definitely is great when you're explaining ideas and don't have a show and tell going on but rather need to explain some abstract ideas. I do love the old mug and bench show and tell "Come over here, lemme show you how this works" kinda vids though too. Don't stop those entirely. They gave your channel its own charm.
I do have to say though, that board seems to have you possessed or something. It does NOT want to let go of your face. You're a cop, why look away from us? We're the ones terrified of YOU. Lol
I am excited for the next video. I've always wondered what goes through someone's mind when they're answering a domestic violence call. I hear that is straight up the stuff of nightmares.
the table top stuff definitely won't stop. I do have to get into the habit of treating the camera like an audience. It is hard to do since, well i'm just talking alone in a garage at 3am.
For this type of topic this is an excellent format. For gear reviews I like tabletops. You're doing a good job of building the lesson/video to the topic you're speaking on.
This is information everyone needs, not just those in law enforcement or security. Thanks for the content.
+Sedan57Chevy I couldn't agree more! You are very welcome.
This should be taught as part of people skills in high school. Sooner or later, no matter who you are, you are going to have to address a wide range of people, for good or bad. This is very helpful.
Sedan57Chevy I hate how people talk to me like I am a two year old (I work customer service. and going into security). I mught not be a doctor but I did graduate from High School. Yes I might not be able to arrange my words to talk to a phd in physics but dang it I can understand
Just received my first security job at a 2500 resident resort and the company also does High End Security as well. Have been watching your videos for approximately two months now, catching up on old ones. Great videos sir, keep them up.
+David DeBergh I'm glad they help. Please share!
Very nice video, I just have a little addition: be careful what kinds of words you're using when attempting to match the education level of a doctor/lawyer/other professional. I have seen way too many cases of people attempting to sound well educated and miserably failing because they are using overly complex words - words that would not normally be used in conversation. What I've found to be the most effective way of dealing with everyone is to talk to them as you normally would - like you have nothing to prove (which you don't) - and then only dumb it down from there if necessary, but don't attempt to sound MORE sophisticated than that or the person you're talking to will likely pick up on it.
+TacRac Exactly, excellent point. No saying "this is preposterous" or any other such shananagins.
Your videos are some of the best training videos out there for LE and Security. I work armed security for a company that has the contract for a large movie theatre chain, among other places, and I'm recommending all these videos to my coworkers. Keep them coming and stay safe out there.
+Tad Trueman Thank you for the vote of confidence. I'm happy they help and I certainly will make more, in fact, I have a couple more like this I am editing right now.
Love your channel bro. Keep up the great work. Like the gear and weapon reviews but would like to see a whole lot more police training videos. They are great!
Uncle Rufus!!! aka nearly every transient I talk with. Spot on with how important communication is. Most valuable tool an officer has. Thx for sharing!
+FuzzFam Fun fact: My Uncle (Rufus) didn't think this video was very funny.
The amount of detail he puts in amazes me, need more of him on social media exactly what our task force needs, public figures that inform and get to the point, stay safe and stay healthy
I love the way you teach that stuff
I really enjoy watching your videos like this one that gives some good advice because my security company sucks and sends us out to work with minimal training
Your videos are great. Thanks for all the info!
This is a great video!! Thanks for the quality info!
This will be a great series! keep up the good work
Thank you! will do.

+Darrell Parkhill Glad you like it brother. Just trying to do my part and such.
Thank you for doing these - I'm at the last stages of the hiring process with a local city PD, and have been re-watching all of your videos and taking notes. Thanks for letting us borrow from your "toolkit."
+Alex Glad they help.
Thank you brother. I'm digging the new format, 2 thumbs up !!
Also, is that " The " Robert Griffin III I'm thinking about? The QB? Lol

+Abdalla mohamoud thanks beother
Awesome videos I'm a teen going into law enforcement in my area and it's cool learning how to deal with people and the logic behind them rather then just watching on ride alongs
+connor kish Thanks, I'm glad you like it.
I love this type of content
+Daniel Craig. H I was rolling the dice on how it would come out. I'm glad folks like it.
This lesson was very helpful.

Thank you very much for your service and the information you are providing in these videos. Stay safe and happy hunting.
+Horsemen Arms I do what I love brother. Thanks for watching!
I like this style of video. Classroom style offers several advantages. The main one being you can write things down so no one forgets, lol. The video has some good info in it.
I see the new thermos has yet to be destroyed. I'm sure it'll get there soon enough.
+The Red Duke Arminius It is a couple falls off the back deck of my cruiser from being the perfect amount of screwed up to really piss off my wife.
I am visually impaired, and thought it would be interesting to see a video on approaching individuals with disabilities, and how people with disabilities can communicate to the officer and make it go as smoothly as possible.
I know that I am an activist for the police, but as a person with hearing and vision loss, I might unintentionally do something that would make me look like a threat and I just thought it would be interesting to learn how that works
I am only 15 years old and this helped me too, Thanks!
+FALLENxTHIEFx glad to help!
this is a smart one listen to him
Nice
We need more videos pls
I can tell you've been doing this a long time. I totally understand the need for the game face, but as someone who has dealt with police a lot while not being nor having ever been a criminal, I've only run into one officer who behaved like Rambo from the go. I've found, overwhelmingly, our police officers are extremely helpful, respectful and calm. This is in Seattle too, where the Fed has come down on SPD. My anecdotal personal experience has been grossly different than the media version. As always, love your vids!
I also wanted to add in that by understanding how officers think via your videos, it's helped me to interact with police in a way that's better for me and them. This is just plain good life advice here.
+Jim Bonney Glad to hear you have had good experiences. One bad apple can spoil my lunch though and the one guy who can't act like an adult can cause me to miss my lunch trying to fix his problems. Lol.
+Jim Bonney Thank you. I'm glad it helps.
Would love to see more of these videos on theory!! Keep doing great work brother!
They are inbound! Hopefully i can manage to polish them up a little bit more too.
Other than the audio on outdoor videos, I wouldn't worry too much about the production quality. It's called "field training" not "virtual academy" for a reason. :)
+Aaron Phillips Ah, I'm just always looking to improve.
goddammit, I just wanna pew pew.
These are fantastic
+T You know I really didn't think that me talking in my garage would garner such a positive reaction from everyone. I'm really glad you like the vid.
Absolutely. You are talking about things that may save someone's life. Keep up the great work
well i am really glad everyone likes them!
This guy doesn’t need to worry about speaking at a level too high for others.
Thank you for the education. I have a question if my end goal is to be a game warden do you recommend going to be a sheriff’s deputy first for experience until I get a job as a game warden?
Good work officer! ;)
Greetings from Poland.
+Skibcuś greetings from Illinois!
There's the matter of people that are 4th grade education and act as if they have a phd, the type of people that despite what your trying to sell them, they've just won't accept it, and they know better. From what I've encountered I found that the approach in a firm, assertive manner establishes with who we're dealing with and then we know how to continue the conversation and depending on what is our primary goal resolve the issue. Let's face it, in most domestic calls where ppl are arguing there's always the source of the problem, and it's always one person or the other, so I would say finding the source and handling it, brings us to resolving the issue, whatever it may be.
If that works for you I'm not going to try to convince you otherwise.
I've seen some Walmart greeters with a large amount of attitude
you da mannnn
+NDSecondsCount naw, you d man!
good stuff ...im a ..Security gaurd....
+whtmikeg30vanlife thank you. Me too, but only on weekends and Tuesdays.
What's the best way to respond to someone who is going out of their way to be adversarial to you?
I understand the process as it is similar here in Australia. However it's too complicated. I hung up from the court after an hour on hold as I had to go to work and never pursued it any further. In my case that person was no longer a problem and all's well that ends well but if the situation were different and someones life is in danger the system is too hard for many people.
I really like how you say security can use these techniques too and you don't just shit on security guards as a profession. I work private security and I can't tell you how many time I've had a LEO talk to me like I'm an idiot or a wannabe. I know there are those in the security field who think their Rambo and act like idiots, but we're definitely not all like that. That being said, I work in Detroit, and on an almost daily basis have to intervene in a situation and sometimes use force to get compliance. I'm not an idiot mall cop and there's never a dull day, thats for sure.
So I imagine the Rambo/uncle Rufus combo is the most common u encounter?
+jsj297 I certainly wouldn't say they are the "most common" but, I definitely have more than my fair share. Lol
Very interesting video. I know most police deparment in new york requires recruit to have college credits for to be hire. Do you think it's wise to major in criminal justice or pick a different course as plan B, just in case I don't get hire?
Old reply but I’ll try my best to answer your question. It’s always good to have education at any job. Majority don’t think of employment hazards (criminals 24-7). So, let’s say you retired and want to go do something else. However, you didn’t get a solid education beyond high school. What choices do you have at that point?
You can practice some of thies verbal and body language skills by talking to a mirror you know kinda like in taxi driver lol no really it dose work i've even worked in community theater lotta women in theater and the Ladies love actors and i figure thats as close as i'm going to get to being a movie star. LOL
I like this video and the points you are making. I appreciate that you used a simple outline to illustrate your point, but would it not be useful to say something here about the scale? How many degrees are there between Walmart Greeter and Rambo? ..or education level differences between Rufus and Dr.? I don't mean for this to get too far out in the weeds and this was a relatively brief video, but I think that a lot of the communication problems people have occur between the extremes where it might be more nuanced to determine how educated someone is or how cordial you should be. Otherwise, if this just functions like an on-off switch from greeter to Rambo then I don't see that being particularly useful.
in my city a walmart greeter is under loss prevention catagory. can you explain that? 😞
+Nicholas Costello well, I guess if it helps them prevent losses by engaging with the customer...
Do you think a person with a 4th grade education will pass a police test?
Can you do a video on Dr. Thompson and Verbal Judo, or your opinions? How you may use it in your day to day? Also, suggestions for security officers. We took an 2 hour Verbal Judo course at my hospital and it was absolutely useless because it had 0 hands on training.
+billyshob I actually can't as of right now. Thompson is very protective of his concepts, started a company that are the only ones who can teach "verbal judo" even though he mearly formalized some aspects of talking to people as a cop that good cops had been doing for decades. If anyone is interested they can take one of the courses. The info is quite good in them, but as you said, I found it a little lacking in practicals.
Fair enough. Do you plan on expanding on your own "version" of "verbal judo" in future videos? This video just made me think you might be going in that direction in the future. I'd love to see some scenario based teachings as it relates to this. That would be cool.
that's kind of where i'm going...
Do you have anything on the use of force continuum?
+Scarecrow COD nope. We shouldn't even be using the use of force continuum according to many attorneys who work in the industry defending officers and departments. There is no law supporting them and case law has proven time and again that use of force cannot be mechanically defined in such a way.
Dang thats unfortunate. The bentonville PD needs an update then because thats practically all I was taught here during one of my CJ classes.
+Scarecrow COD I won't speak I'll of another place, but I have gone to several classes taught by a cop who became an attorney then police chief who is very opposed to using force continuums and he has some pretty compelling reasons, not the least of which is they can't accurately give you advice on what to do because they don't take into account the totality of the circumstances involved.
free field training I never even thought of that. However, do you think it would be fair to say that the continuum is basically a guide, and not so much written in stone?
+Paul Bardal When I started we were taught off a continuum. As a teaching tool it isn't terrible for visual learners to get started in understanding how it all works. The problem is that they are all mechanical applications of the use of force. The Supreme Court has ruled in Graham v Conner in part that "the test of reasonableness under the Fourth Amendment is not capable of precise definition or mechanical application," in regards to a seizure, which is how they test if a use of force is judged by the courts. Departments pick a continuum and then make that little chart part of their policy, which I think is a gigantic mistake. You can be perfectly OK according to the chart but not meet the standard for reasonableness under case law. We only have to look as far as the Laquan Mcdonald case to see an example of this. Wanted for a felony? Armed with a deadly weapon? Well within 21-37 feet depending on who you ask? But, nobody can put the totality of the circumstances into a chart. Same goes for the opposite. You could be off the chart and still be perfectly OK under the law. Nobody makes charts that cover getting acid thrown at you, standing in pools of gas, or heavy machinery. But any of those things could be a deciding factor in a use if force incident.
Hey what's up i just bought a A-R 15 Glock 19 870P Magnum and yup good vid btw and i hope you had a good week but a question if it can be answered : What state do you live in
AR-15
+JordisWierd YLD illinois
Amazing ! Last question (Sorry for the questions) Are you planning on doing a shooting range video because i am curious about it and it's not the first time i asked you So i just wanna know
if any further decisions are made
Btw when you saide Wuuuuut you made me die of laughter :-)
Surprise I’m just seeing this vid
So I know you a cop in Ill. I live in Ill, just wondering do you live/work in or near Chicago?
+gamerboy yep
I've met master degree and PhD people who act like uncle Rufus sober which is weird. just like I have to talk slower to other folk in my area since they say I have a bad California accent in Alabama. sometimes I have to talk to them like there in 4th grade
+the vein slayer Stupid happens that is for sure
Yep thats alright even the small town I live in, and i had an l.e.o. dispatched to my home he was blown away how I was talking with my heavy accent. I guess imma edmacated fellow talking fancy to country folk in rural alabama lol. Pays off though local PD has been asking me to translate in esponal for them lol
wuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut
I trade my deputy. exam Tommaso and couldn't find any study guide any suggestions?
+BASHNICH corner Study guide? For like an exam?
free field training yeah buddy of mine said they gave him a study guide when he applied but they didn't have anything when I applied
+BASHNICH corner There are plenty of study guides you can find at your local library, but frankly most tests are simply a standard civil service test with some type of facial recognition memory game at the end.
awesome! thank you ill look into civil service study guides then :)
+BASHNICH corner good luck!
OMG I am so in love with you 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Are you a police
I bet if you and I go toe to toe in a fight, Rambo would win.
+Daniel Craig. H Rambo always wins!
The last 3 encounters I had with police I ended by asking the cops how much their bonds are worth? All 3 were dangerously close to a civil rights lawsuit due to their illegal behavior. That question made all 3 cops fill their diapers and they left me alone.
+HereComeTheRooster oh no! Not sovereign citizen bullshit! Everyone! Quick! Run and hide!
Nobody cares.
I've never bothered to ask if you are ever drinking anything in that mug and what it is
Mostly Keurig cup cafe mocha or coffee.
free field training With a side of Irish?
+SensualLemon nah, I like my fru fru drinks strait. Lol
free field training Even when with a new guy? Very brave 😂
getting a little tipsy could make the day go easier the first day i let them drive!
Rambo is a pretty bad example for "attitude". The whole crux of that story was that he was the quiet guy who wanted to be left alone and be peaceful with everyone. The sheriff is the one who came on with an attitude and caused the conflict. The sheriff in that story is actually a great example of what you're talking about, because if he'd bothered to learn anything about Rambo, he'd have been buying him lunch, not chasing him out of town. He leaped to an erroneous conclusion about who he was talking to based on how he looked, and reacted to that from the jump. That whole story is about a conflict that didn't need to happen spinning out of control.
+John Doe so the movie Rambo was a bad example how?
free field training Touché. I thought you were using the titular character as an example. I guess I'm the one who should watch the assumptions, lol.
That coffee ain't good for you!
+PDXhypebeast Well, I'm working mids and making vids at 3am. It's either coffee or mountain dew and I have to keep my girlish figure!
PDXhypebeast actually if you reasearch about it coffee is not a bad thing to have.
My heart burn says otherwise. lol
haha lol... you win. I guess its case by case because i drink a crap load and i feel fine but idk.
Haha whatever helps you keep up the good work. Thanks for the good vids.
Now i can be a cop on gta v rp
Or the high level educated person will think the officer is a dummy.
Never talk to police.
how about we talk to each other like civilized decent people? same with attitude. why the fuck do you need to judge or assume anything? I think this is a huge problem in training especially with cops... and people wonder why a whole generation literally hate police
+Topher You make the ASSumption that the person who just dotted his old ladies eyes when he came home drunk at 3am is a civilized decent person. Sadly, less than 1% of the population gets 95% of my time and effort. That 1% doesn't respond well to rational conversation. People who respond well to rational conversation we don't need to use this tactic on. In fact I talk about this issue and why it is important to start of encounters with the presumption of respect quite extensively here: czcams.com/video/UaTgsgoNELs/video.html
I knew that would be the argument to go with.....ya your right about the abusive husband scenario and yeah the whole neighborhood already knows he's a piece of shit as do the cops and they deal with people like that accordingly....I'm talking about the guy who just got pulled over for whatever traffic infraction and having a pig profile you before they even make an introduction.....
+Topher Well, if you do even a cursory check of my material you will see that is clearly not what I am advocating for here. Every interaction needs to be scaled to the situation. That is one of the hardest things to teach new cops. Using ultimatums is highly effective in some circumstances and using them properly greatly reduces the number and severity of use of force incidents. If I can talk someone into cuffs instead of beating them into them I will take that every day of the week.
I do agree with most of your training I just disagree with this segment/approach. police need to be far better trained but I dont need my family put in harm's way because some cop with a hero complex is saving the world by stopping people for victimless crimes....really there should be better training for the people who hire and train these officers and also independent oversight... just voicing my opinion is all. just like you do in these videos....cheers mate!!
+Topher I'm not upset at all, you are free to voice your opinion. I share many of your concerns and have to deal with them when training guys quite regularly. I just think your disdain is a bit misplaced in regards to me. Lol.
