    Shifter Locked in Park? Here's a Way to Over-Ride the BTSI Shifter Interlock in an Emergency!
    SAFETY WARNING! BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN WORKING ON ANY GEAR SHIFTER ISSUES! MAKE SURE THE VEHICLE CANNOT ROLL BY LOCKING THE PARKING BRAKE AND USING CHOCKS ON THE WHEELS - AT A MINIMUM THE REAR WHEELS SHOULD BE PROPERLY CHOCKED BUT ALL 4 WHEELS CHOCKED IS BEST. WORKING ON A LEVEL PARKING SURFACE IS ALSO CRITICAL!

    The original video on the BTSI for Trailblazer, Envoy, Ascender, Rainier was filmed at an angle that did not show the Over-Ride very well at the front of the video. This video may show that procedure somewhat more clearly. Just trying to be helpful. Thanks for watching, and please consider subscribing. Have a GREAT Day!

    You may need the assistance of a mechanic trained and experienced with this type of vehicle as It sounds like you could have more than one issue. That said, a shifter mechanism out of sync with the actual transmission can cause a lot of problems due to the signals the vehicle's on board computer is recieving and sending. The key switch will only crank the engine over if the actual transmission itself is in the park or neutral position (a malfunctioning shifter or cable mechanism may cause a difference in the shifter position and the actual transmission position.) I would begin by inspecting the shifter related linkages and mechanisms (ALWAYS STABILIZE THE VEHICLE FIRST). You may have a bad shifter cable issue or - possibly the cheapest to fix and most likely- only the grommet at the end of the cable may be worn/bad/disconnected. You also could have a BTSI issue keeping the shifter locked up, but that is less likely. There are steps on other videos that explain those issues. A first-step easy, cheap fix for that may be to pull the shifter lever boot up and try a bit of WD40 at the points shown in the video. As a diagnostic measure you could drill a hole in the side of the console in the right position (shown on the BTSI video) to manually release the BTSI lock -BUT BE CAREFUL TO ENSURE THE VEHICLE CAN'T ROLL IF YOU MANUALLY OPERATE THE BTSI SOLENOID!

    You can depress the button simply by sticking a screw driver into the hole where the shifter boot is, like from where you showed how to lubricate it. If you come in from the passenger side you can see the button from the top down and lever the screwdriver against it. Removing the console or drilling it is unnecessary

    • @cubmancan

      Good Point! In any case, proper precautions are absolutely required - SET THE PARKING BRAHE, ETC. It's a bit tricky to do without the hole drilled sometimes, and if concerned with a less mechanically inclined operator, the drilled hole method is ALMOST fool-proof (if it is located correctly). Thanks for the input!

      I don't really have a lot of experience with those warning lights, but have been told that they may be related to the wheel speed sensors. A good code reader may help a lot with that if not done already! Thanks for the comment and watching CZcams!

    • @cubmancan

      Thanks for the Question: FIRST! Be safe - A vehicle with shifter issues may roll unexpectedly! BLOCK and CHOCK Wheels and SET BRAKES; and be parked on level surfaces!!! If using jacks, properly jack and support the vehicle using substantial jack stands and solid cribbing. Okay, so, SAFELY, determine if your shifter cable is actuating the transmission properly. Usually, there is damage or wear at the transmission end of the cable. (Worn grommets or bent brackets, etc.) Also make sure there is nothing keeping the floor shifter from going through the range of operation, such as debris or objects in the shifter mechanism. Hope this helps and you find your problem quickly!

    • @cubmancan
      @cubmancan  Před 3 lety

      By the wiring scheme, the BTSI is strickly a lock mechanism to ensure the brake is engaged when the engine is cranked - should not have anything to do with the engine shutting down. Thanks for watching!

    What is the right fix for locked shifter?
    Your tip worked on mine to unlock the shifter, but the indicator in the dash shows R for reverse and it won't engage the starter. I can move the shifter back and forth so long as I don't put it in the Park position. If I do it locks again and I use your unlock tip.

    • @cubmancan
      @cubmancan  Před 3 lety +1

      Glad it helped! Sounds like your console shifter will go into Park, but the cable is not pushing the transmission lever all the way into Park position. That can cause a hazard if the vehicle transmission does not lock the transmission in Park. Use the parking brakes lever to ensure your vehicle does not roll when parked in "Park" until you can correct the transmission shifter issue. On the vehicle I worked on the main problem was the grommet at the end of the shift cable worn out - an easy fix, just pry it out and push a new one in (Autozone, etc). AGAIN - WARNING! - stabilize the vehicle when working on the cable and other shifter issues! (Use park brakes, wheel chocks, etc)! Also, sometimes the bracket that holds the end of the cable at the transmission can get worn and loose causing the cable to slide back and forth a bit and not fully engage in Park. In addition, I had to lube up the BTSI solenoid in the console and put some lube at the base of the shifter stick (the linkage there) - used WD40 but silicone lube may be better for the materials involved. Also an electrical issue can occur as the BTSI takes 12 volts to make it operate. Usually the solenoid will work if everything else is in sync. It doesn't sound like the BTSI solenoid is your main problem and I hope you don't have to remove the console to replace the solenoid, as that is quite a job, but can be done. Check everything else out first. Thanks for Watching!

      FIRST! BE SAFE, Set the Brakes and Chock the Wheels before doing any Transmission service!
      It is likely a problem with the shifter cable, Most likely the plastic bushings where the cable meets the transmission or a bent bracket from hitting objects with the underside of the vehicle.
      Hope it Helps! Thanks for Watching!
