    One positive thing to come out of the Krakatoa explosion was the creation of a safe habitat for the last of Javan rhinos. Right across the sea from Krakatoa is the Ujong Kulon peninsula, part of the island of Java. The volcanic explosion caused most people living on the peninsula to abandon it. Over the years, the volcanic Ash enriched soil and the heavy rainfalls that the region receives gave birth to a nearly 500 km^2 large rainforest which harboured a wide variety of flora and fauna. Even as the population increased across Java, creating more pressure on the island's ecology, Ujong Kulon remained uninhabited. Thus, when Javan rhinos went extinct in the rest of Java, a small population remained in Ujong Kulon and it survives to this day, making Ujong Kulon the last stronghold of the Javanese rhinos.

    Just imagine minding your own business, then having your eardrums burst instantly without having a clue as to what happened, as well as probably feeling a huge shock in your chest. Then, looking around to see everyone else around you in the same state, clutching their ears. Just as you start to calm down and try to figure out what hell you've stumbled into, you see a gargantuan pillar of smoke in the horizon, growing ever larger. The sky only continues to darken and become more dismal in the days to follow, while you're still deaf and in pain.
    Now imagine not knowing what a volcano is.
    I'm not sure what would be more traumatizing - that, or recognizing a massive nuclear explosion in the distance nowadays.

    Fun fact: Have you ever wondered why Indonesia is overpopulated? Because Indonesia's soil is very fertile due to all that volcanic eruptions. Volcanic ashes are rich in potassium and phosphorus so it's actually a very good fertilizer. It's so weird these eruptions could kill us all but at the same time eruptions helps us to rebuild stronger.

    I live in Malang, a city in East Java Province of Indonesia. The city is surrounded by at least 8 vocanic cones in all wind directions (Semeru in SE, Bromo in NE, Arjuno and Welirang in NW, Kawi, Butak, and Kelud in SW, and Malang Maar in the centre of the city). I can tell you living in the middle of volcanoes is not as scary as you may think.
    1. Some volcanoes may erupt very violently, but some others are gentle. They release the energy very frequently and gradually so there will be no explossive burst. You can enjoy them smoke every morning when the sun rises behind them. A very nice view.
    2. Unlike earthquake, a volcanic eruption can be monitored and predicted. You have some times to evacuate yourself from the impacted area.
    3. We enjoy cool air, a temperate climate in the middle of tropical climate. We enjoy the sunshine all the year around while we enjoy a very pleasant temperature.
    4. Spring water is everywhere. Rain forest on the mountains collects the rain and stores it just under the soil. Water is abundant and we never experience drought during dry season.
    5. I always go to the mountain to escape from the crowd of the city. It is just one hour driving from the city. The view from the mountain is just breathtaking.
    6. The soil is dark and rich of nutrients and minerals. Together with abundant water, abundant sunshine, and cool climate, the city is very perfect for fruits and veggies plantation.

They made a competition of it, and Shelley won, handily. She wrote her story down, and it went on to be adapted to the first sound film production to come out of Hollywood. The movie and story became a global phenomenon, and the inventor of the pacemaker was inspired as a child by the ideas presented in Frankenstein.

      yea the probability thing just doesn't work well with human experience. you need to use some binomial math along with - i can't remember - normal or poisson distribution. even then, 1 in 100k is actually pretty darn low still. the annual odds of dying in a motor vehicle accident (in the US) is about 1 in 9k.

    If humans could survive 75000 years ago from a level 8 volcano, I'm pretty sure we can survive a supervolcano considering we have advanced technology on our side now.

    • @johnchesterfield9726
      @johnchesterfield9726 Před 7 lety +15

      Jokez Most of the human population got killed 75,000 years ago and we could've went extinct, but didn't by just a sliver. Also, volcanos erupt without warning, so we wouldn't have time to prepare for a volcano eruption even with our advanced technology

    • @IWantToStayAtYourHouse
      @IWantToStayAtYourHouse Před 7 lety +19

      +John Chesterfield There are 7 billion humans today. 75000 years ago there was less than a million humans in the world. And still we survived. Even in the video reallifelore said we would not go extinct.

      @johnchesterfield9726 Před 7 lety +3

    • @johnchesterfield9726
      @johnchesterfield9726 Před 7 lety +9

      what he said of being unprepared is true.... its like getting invaded without a warning, you get surprised and it takes time to call the military into the battlefield as they take time to prepare.... those are similar to when a volcano erupts as we get surprised by the explosion.... also before we get time to do a full scale search and rescue mission, the nearby cities near Yellowstone is now dead being thrown by molten rocks, covered by ash, getting poisoned by gas... and other stuff
