- This time on Sally's Speed Shop we head up to my friend Keith's place at Mule Town Dyno to dial in the Javelin before it's first big race! We thrashed to put this thing together in just two weeks, and ran into a few issues, but overall I think you guys are going to be just as impressed by this old racecar as we were!
A huge thank you to Keith for all of his help, we couldn't have done this without his help. Check him out at / muletown.mobiledyno to see what shows he's planning to be at near you!
This is in preparation for drag racing it, for the first time ever, at the Kenosha, Wisconsin AMC Party. Does it finally get finished? Does the motor, that hasn't ran in almost 30 years, actually start? Does the car, that was started almost 40 years ago and never completed, finally get done? Can it really be finished in a two week thrash? Follow along as we add another chapter to the story of Rob Wess, John Dover and Tony Mancusi...helping them see their dream become a reality.

That is a beautiful '72 Javelin. I have always been a big fan of the Javelin and the AMX. There was a '72 Javelin for sale that my wife and I looked at sitting outside of Mason-Dixon Drag Way outside of Hagerstown, Maryland. I couldn't afford it and I could tell it had been wrecked but it was nice. It's nice to dream.
I had a 72 Javelin SST that I built back in 81. I had her dyno'd at 425 at the rear wheels.
Nice. That's some pretty good power too. Thanks for watching! 😊
Early 70s we took an AMX and stretched the front end 12 in to give a Javelin wheelbase (spliced two together)
engine set back and lownred white and blue raced it some till we got caught what fun 401 with 360 on the side of the block
Miss my Javelin AMX 1972 had the spoilers rear tail, blue with white strips. 401 engine really put out. Wish I had it today.
I've been following this car since y'all picked it up. Can't wait to see it on the race track. I've owned a few Javelins..SST..AMX... I love them. I still own a very nice 1972. It's been in storage for awhile..I need to get it out and blow the dust out of her.. I've got video of smoking the tires off to the point of not being able to see the car at all. That's with some skinny 50,s Goodyear eagles. Them things will go forever. I would break a drive shaft or shove the ladder bars through the floorboards with those wrinkle wall Mickey Thompson's. Get some crazy traction.
Awesome this javelin one mean machine I love to see it ,go down the track.
It sounds like it has soo much more hp. It sounds like a monster. Can’t wait to see it on the track 👍
god that sounds good. i turned on my surround sound and sub on just so the hole house could enjoy that sound.
Glad to see the car under power and things working out for you. It’s been a bunch of work to get to this point and I’m happy to see that you didn’t get burned, your hard work is definitely paying off.
That Javelin needs a license plate! It would be killer driving it through town to go get ice-cream!
We have a title and can tag it. But also, we live in Georgia and could tag it without a title. It's in the plans. Thanks for watching! 😊
It sounds mean, not bad power!! It should run well dwn the strip! Such a cool car!! Love the history n story of this car!! The stories n history are some of the best parts of classic cars! Rock on 🤘 guys!!!!
You have come along ways since you first got the car...
Just loved watching your pulls !!! ❤❤❤
Man I love this project! Great to see it make power.
So good to see it running, man I don't know how you piece together a car so quickly. Can't wait until it's a drag and drive
This is such an incredible video to see that Javelin make that much power on the dyno and run flawlessly just really stunning😮 kudos to all the great people that worked on the car recently and over the years great job everyone!!
Thanks for watching!
Wow! AMC Powah!!! I really enjoyed all the dial-in procedures AND the tech talk about what you folks were seeing in your results. That's an education, right here. Just watching the Javelin move under its own power was...elation. Still...I can't but think about the owners of the car who got so CLOSE to having a working race car...but them...they stopped. There are life lessons in there, for sure. Mahalo for another incredible video!
Thanks friend! Thanks for watching. 😊
@@OldTimeRevival Thanks for the tip! I have found YOUR channel!
Priorities. Family, running a business and having 3 other projects. Also loosing my go to guy when I got into something over my head (Chuck Chasis) was a factor. Wanted to focus more on street/strip cars and that’s what I’m doing. Will always have some level of regret for not finishing it but selling it to Jacob and his Dad has been great. They keep me in the loop on their progress and I was able to spend the day with them at the drag strip. It’s been an all around win.
@@tonymancusi5657 I don't think you could have done a better thing!!! Your LIFE is more important than a car. Hands DOWN! This IS a win for all of you! Well done, you!
Been shifting mine at 7800... It loves it....
That was a total thrill. Completely enjoyed this video.
Wow what a awesome car.
Awesome video! Glad you figured out the timing issue. I was afraid you heard me yelling all the way from SE N.C. Crank triggers are a whole new learning curve compared to distributors.
I have been waiting for this one
Needs a blower now awesome ride
the saga continues! This is so COOL dang!
OMG watching 👀 you drive out the first time!!!!!
Cool 😎 . Let’s go , i am kinda partial 😊
What a weapon sounds amazing
Damn that thing sounds awesome.
Really cool. Never saw a mobile Dyno. Great video! Looks like it’s ready to run it. Thanks for sharing.
💯👍👊
Thanks for watching! 😊
Great stuff guys thanks, The car looks and sounds amazing. Nice power for the first pulls on the Dino good luck with it.
I love that Javalin
AMC is like Buick. Most don't know. Those that do, it's like voodoo to everyone else. Great stuff. Table top flat power curve. It'll pull like a train. Every gear. All the time.
Awesome results!
This thing is going to be great on the track 👍👍
Nice! Sounds great.
Looks like you have a racecar , and looking good !! Its awesome looking body style !
I have been waiting for this one...she’s gonna be FAST... She sounds awesome! If she hooks up and goes straight...you may have to put some wheelie bars out back to keep her down. Spinning those big meat tires and loosing a pinch of time is preferred to flipping her on her top... Keep the shiny side up! And I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of times she’s gonna do! Truly awesome that she was just two weeks away from being finished for SOOO long. You have just done a little dialing in on the dyno...and she sounds like she is ready and willing to go! Amazing!!!
Put in a smokin stereo and about six or eight Harmen Karmen speakiers and you have a hot chic magnet. Nice..
Sounds great
very cool guys, she is a beast....
The Rambler 401 sounded great and great numbers HP and Torque
AMC heads were badass for there day. 202 160 valves, free flowing runners and exhaust, angled plugs. Makes good power up top 3 to 7rpm. Unheard of from stock heads. AMC engines respond to anything. 500hp from a AMC engines is no problem even with stock heads. Truly a well designed engine accept for there oiling system. Needs sum tweaking and it's good.
Awwwwwwesome, new video!!!
I use a Moroso adjuster on my MSD Crank Trigger so I can fine tune my timing. I have a old MSD 7AL setup. So no lap top like your newer MSD . But yes you need to adjust the Crank Trigger. Your distributor is locked out. It only distribute the spark to each cylinder. Your Crank Trigger is your pick up .
Mobile Dyno Is Badass 🔥
What a sick snarl sound.... 💖👊
Hey guys, that has a crank trigger, you can turn the distributor all you want and it won't change the timing.
Haha yeah… We felt like idiots once we realized what we were doing. Neither of us had ever dealt with a crank trigger when it came to adjusting the timing.
That's nothing to complain about. Now...the strip...
Great Stuff 👍
Thanks brother! 777
Such an amazing machine even after decades. If she ran as he built it gotta think it would've been a big winner at the strip for NA. Did they have Super Stock back then?
I had a 401 amc in my jet boat- ate every boat in the lake.
i want to see it make a hit, I feel it will do well in the 1/8th mile. Just think what it will do with a good set of heads. The AMC engines have solid bottom ends, they only need a good set of heads to run to 8000 rpms
Currently, AMC heads, ported and polished. Thanks for watching!
They have pretty decent heads.
VHS developed the AMC dog leg v8 cylinder oem heads...but Eddys or Indy Heads would step up the horsepower game by a good margin!!
Cool Hot Rod
Very nice 👍👍👍👍👍😊
For older technology that is VERY respectable Horsepower, she definitely has the power to back up how badass she looks. I love how low she sits with those big tires tucked, yall definitely have a BEAUTIFUL Drag Car and I for one cant wait to see where yall take it from here. 🇺🇸🤙🏼🙏🏼
Thanks for watching!
Can't say that I have ever seen a Rambler engine spin at 7 grand.
excellent
what a beast. with a power curve like that i'd imagine it will pull like a train on track. respect to the builder and amc.
Kind of shocked the previous owner didn’t write out detailed instructions on changing the timing!
We coulda used that. 😂 Thanks for watching!
Congrats 👏 that's freaking awesome 👍 I'm guessing a low 10 or high 9 at the track
Next episode will be from Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove, IL. Thanks for watching!
Good estimate!
Send it! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
That's really good for that old technology that's awesome what a fun street car that isMy buddy just bought a 427 cammerIt's completely disassembled it has one melted piston the guy said the last time it ran was 1975 yeah he's nuts he's going to spend a fortune fixing that thing but one good thing it already has 426 Hemi main caps so that's a good thing I told him I'm too old for this you get all the machine work done and I'll put it together but I ain't going to do no Machining I'm too old for that have a great day I love The javelin those are so cool overlooked cars
Thanks for watching! 😊
VMP DOES IT!🎊
Wow
Sounds good. Sounds like its gonna be happy up in the rpm's. I guessed 519 at the wheels.
It's close. We may be able to get to that.
@OldTimeRevival Hey maybe something helpful, sounds and looks like the converter might be alittle tight or the line pressure a little high
Gangster. It is absolute gangster. Congrats
The Javelin sounds great on those pulls. Did that count as your engine break-in?
Wow beautiful 🇺🇲👍👌😎
I used to work in an automotive test lab for lubricant research. We had a rig with a turbo 350 and it was 28% efficiency lost at best in 3rd gear and a street convertor. The axle loses another 2-3% at best, but would be more at those high speeds. I don't know what you lose on those big tires. But in my mind there's no way you are losing less than 30% overall on this old drivetrain.
Told you wrong on torque, correction is 609 lbs. at 5,800 rpm.
I always liked the AMC stuff that mota is in the pass seat! How many inches back?
Don't know but it's definitely sitting back.
For a racer this was a fabulous video
Moving distributer does nothing as you figured out but now you need to be sure your cap and rotor are aligned since you moved it.
Good advice! Thanks for watching!
Whoever built that engine, had skills. Lots
Agreed! Thanks for watching!
No sir. The distributor wont do anything for timing when you have a hall effect crank trigger. Thie distriburor just distributes spark at this point. Set the hall sensor for timing. What is the AFR's at? Does it have a afr gauge? Its is a beautiful classic. I love that car😊😊😊😊.
That is an incredible dyno curve! Smooth! Linier!
We're unsure of the AFR. We plan to install one.
Is that Joe Ligo and team with the Last Independent Automaker AMC Documentary there with you as the other filmers? Been looking forward to that documentary for a long while!
Jonathan and Maggie Hickman are doing the documentary.
Send me a video clip of its first full quarter mile run 🙏 I love seeing forgotten cars brought back to full usage also Id love to have me an amx 390 go package
Should have a video out next week from its first time on the track...at Great Lakes Dragaway, near Kenosha, Wisconsin. Thanks for watching.
Most engines make the best power around or at 36° total timing... My BBC 468 makes the most power at 37° timing, 800 HP. 509 lbs. torque, 12:3 comp. 7,500 rpm for the 800 HP. and 5,800 rpm for max torque.
Can u just set the timing against the pining sensor so it works itself out ?
I think on a better dyno and playing around a little more you'll get a higher number than that
Yaaaay, more dad jokes. Sweeeet!!! Sorry Jacob.
amc rules
Put new belts in the shoot pack which is in spec. Are you going to put some stickers on it?
Plan to. Any suggestions?
I guess although you lose power with the big tyres, you more than make up for it with the traction gain on the strip.
Wow not bad for a 258 ,,when does the ls go in,??¿
😂 Thanks for watching!
I worked for AMC in the '68 to '73 timeframe. What is the displacement of your engine? What is the bore and stroke ?
401, bored and stroked to a 431.
SAAB 16 valve easily make a well driveable 500 HP, only give away being the end pipe ..kihi......if wanting to pass 270 km/h one has to choose the correct body , the one which doesn't generate too much lift....know that THE HARD WAY....
Definitely an awesome car you guys act like it's a big deal when it's at for all those years and obviously was inside and dry wherever it was in which case how could you say you can't believe that it runs like it does it can sit for 50 years as long as it was inside and it would still run just like it does
I believe the rear tires are too tall, but I don't know what rear gear you are running. I run 32.5-15".
4.86 gear...
A 2" spacer under the carb (may require a jet change) will free up some extra hp
Time for some turbo chargers
Any idea what class the car was originally built to compete in? I’m guessing pro gas or super gas, or quick 8.
It wasn't really built for racing necessarily. The original owner just wanted a really mean street car. Thanks for watching!
When I bought the drivetrain I was thinking super gas.
Car has a crank trigger system on it so turning the distributor only messes up your rotor phasing
So we learned, neither of us had never personally messed with a crank trigger car, but we learned fairly quickly that was the case.
@@SallysSpeedShop good luck with your build its really interesting, I was cracking up whenever I seen him turning the distributor and I couldn't hear any change in the engine, then I seen that MSD crank trigger, I just had to message you, (if we're not all learning something everyday we are not doing anything) good luck brother
Thanks for watching sir!
More timing and rpm, more power. But 480whp is not 600hp at the crank for sure! I love the Javelin, it’s weird enough from all the murican cars to be special.
So, how much do you think it is at the crank? Thanks for watching.
@@OldTimeRevival I would say closer to 550 than 600 at the crank. People always assume transmission loses way high. Never have seen losses higher than 12-15% on automatics. Imagine you put those loses to what they are to heat, from friction. Let’s pretend its 20% so around 70kW in this case, put that in to the transmission oil volume. So not that high I would say.
We hope to engine dyno it within the next couple of months so... we'll see. 👍🏻
Love that he gave the actual price in 2023. Did you get a sheet of your numbers?
That’s pretty cool with a old tech camshaft, just imagine what it could make with todays standards, seems that it has room to grow in power with all the torque it’s making vs horsepower.
Did I miss what size the engine is. AMC 390 ?
401, bored and stroked to a 431. Thanks for watching.
@@OldTimeRevival Really a nice car. Needs some head lights 🏆
@@63grandsport11Agreed. We'll get some lights in at some point.
Just to bad ass
if she had a voice she'd be yelling " FINALLY", can't wait to see how fast she runs for you :)
2nd
After watching this I had to go out to the garage and start up the Rust-O-Mod just to hear her purr
