    No, it's not a contradiction to his portrayal in the Clone Wars. During the youngling arc (a season 5 arc) we see Hondo at his most vile, attacking a youngling ship, smoking the younglings out of the vents, and capturing Ahsoka with plans to sell her dead or alive. By the end of the arc he's perfectly capable of escaping but sticks around to help because one of the younglings asked him for help. He definitely grew a heart there and it makes perfect sense for him to keep it into Rebels.

      Not to mention, but in Rebels he was older and more mellowed out. In Clone Wars he was a "Hard As Nails Pirate." In Rebels he was the "Old Pirate." Still interested in profit and treasure bit he'd "been there seen that" and saw parts of himself in Ezra.

  • @DaxSchaffer
    @DaxSchaffer Před 9 měsíci +140

    I always took Hondo's change in personality as a result of the time that had passed since CW. He lost his crew and likely went through a number of humbling experiences because of the Empire. Maybe by that point he started to have life regrets, like wishing he had had a kid, so Ezra starts to become a surrogate child to him. Was he bad in Clone Wars? Yes, but assuming he can't have changed at least somewhat for the better is like assuming that Anakin was incapable of becoming Vader or that Vader couldn't have been redeemed. People do change with time and experience. Anyway, he's still a con man, just a more mellowed out one.

      Honestly I think Zero Hour is generally BETTER than Twilight of the Apprentice, in part because it doesn't rely so heavily on returning characters. Like, yeah, Twilight of the Apprentice is good, but it's mainly because of Maul, Ahsoka, and Vader. Zero Hour really gives the Rebels-original characters a chance to shine, as well as paints the Empire as the ruthless and cunning villain it's intended to be.

      No, not really. Clone Wars with the exception of 7th season was made by a student who was still learning. Rebels was made by a master. The difference in quality of writing is very noticeable. Not to mention that Clone Wars is essentially a bunch of war stories put together with no real connection among them. While Rebels has an actual overall plot with the start and the end. And the actual, very well developed main characters. In contrast Clone Wars has only one main character - Ahsoka, who is not always present on screen. While the others like Anakin and Obi-wan are static. They don't change. There is no character development there. Sure it is not Filoni's fault. They can't be change in the show because of the movies, but it makes them supporting characters and decrease the quality of the show drastically.

    • @GreenNinj4
      @GreenNinj4 Před 9 měsíci +8

      @@hint1kYou didnt understand Clone Wars. The shows main character is the war itself, the time period between episode 2 and 3. The shows beginning is set right after episode 2 when the war began and it ends during episode 3 when it ends. What we see during this time is how the war affects the galaxy so stop this „just a bunch of war stories without a connection“ bs.
      Yes, not every episode features the same characters but this is what makes the show special and why people love it. The makers wanted to TELL STORIES and SHOW us this huge galaxy that George created and what is beyond the movies. We get to see the galaxy like never before, we see so many new and old places, characters and perspectives. The worldbuilding is incredible and makes the galaxy feel huge. Even places that only appear once feel like they could exist, something that you cant say when watching Rebels.
      Your master/ student metaphor is exactly the other way, we already saw that in the worldbuilding, but also in the character work. CW managed to turn monotone killing machines into complex individuals, a silent henchman into one of the greatest villains of the franchise, created some of its most beloved characters and even managed to turn Jar-Jar Binks into a good character.
      Rebels has six main characters, out of which 3 are soulless stereotypes that stay heavily underdeveloped. Unlike Ahsoka, Ezra is annoying for half of the show and Sabine is a boring Mary Sue that is so op that other characters feel useless around her, making Kanan the only well written character. The villains are also poorly written and the show is the most interesting, when characters from other media appear.
      That tells you already everything you need to know about the show: it sucks.

    One thing most people overlook in defense of the Ghost crew always beating the empire so easily, is that the entire crew are highly skilled individuals. Kanan is a Jedi who had multiple years of experience leading troops during the clone wars. Hera is an extremely skilled pilot and has spent her whole life around war, especially her father's guerilla style tactics which is what the ghost crew mostly uses. Zeb was the captain of the Lasan honor guard, which is basically the top position in his species' military. Sabine is a tech genius, an above average pilot, a mandalorian, and had spent a fair amount of time as a bounty hunter before even joining the crew. Chopper is one of the oldest and most experienced astromechs in the galaxy, due to never having his memory wiped, and in addition to that he has several custom upgrades. And as for Ezra, he spent most of his childhood surviving on the street providing for himself, which gave him both stealth skills, as well as being very good at deception, and on top of that he later becomes a Jedi. One last thing is Ezra had a good number of failures and mistakes early on which were realistic and he progressively grew out of them in the show.

      To quote the OT fanboys „but stormtroopers are highly capable super trained elite soldiers, only picked from the best of the best“ We know that this isnt true of course but the stormtroopers in this show miss a 2 meter guy standing one meter away from him. The Ghost Crew can be as skilled as they want, this is ridicolous.

    • @boganbane
      @boganbane Před 8 měsíci +7

      It's not so much that they do beat the empire, but about how they do it. Rebels would've been significantly better if the Empire was actually competent in the show, and the rebels still managed to beat them from time to time. I still like the show, but because of the relationships between the Ghost crew, not because of how they beat the Empire.

    Fantastic video. I loved hearing all your thoughts on this masterpiece of a show
    Also, I’m gonna defend “Warhead” for a sec, and give my reason why it wasn’t filler. Thrawn sent out the probes to find the rebel base, and the droid encounters issues with the spiders. He’s found and brought into the base while AP-5 (all hail) puts him in charge of inventory. As soon as the droid discovers the base, the whole base is inevitably going to be discovered, which is crucial for the S3 finale.
    While they prevent Thrawn from immediately discovering the base’s location, inadvertently they help Thrawn narrow down a dangerously few planets where the base could be located.
    Also, the horror elements thrown in with the droid quickly destroying droids and looking disturbing, the banter between Zeb, Chopper, and AP-5 (all hail), and the tension of the warhead’s countdown and their discovery all make a really fun and long-term important episode

First, he turns the gravity on when Ezea begs him not to, almost dropping him to his death. Luckily, he lands on the catwalk, but almost snaps his neck in doing so because Chopper drops him on his head. Then he's dangling from the ledge, Chopper runs over his fingers

    13:30 What ALWAYS bugged me about Warhead is that according to the Rebels Recon aftershow, it was originally intended to be about Zeb and REX teaming up, bonding over their experience as military leaders and dealing with grief, but then they decided to make it about Zeb and the droids going on a goofy adventure instead. It annoyed me because Zeb hadn’t had any meaningful character exploration since Legends of the Lasat in season 2 and they threw away an opportunity to have some for forgettable banter / bickering. I did love AP-5, though.

    "Children of the Force" isn't the first time Palpatine has been behind the kidnapping of Force-sensitive children. He did so during the Clone Wars as well, but the plot was thwarted by Ahsoka (I can't remember if Anakin helped her on that one or not). While not a new concept, realizing that he was still stealing infants during the time of the Empire was a revelation to be sure. It didn't surprise very much that the Empire would identify older kids in the Academy and then "disappear" them, but going through the extra effort of kidnapping infants was a bit of a surprise.

    For me, what makes Ezra’s Parents’ deaths hit more was that they were alive up to the midpoint of the episode and that Tseebo knew of their whereabouts but Ezra rejected the information. If He had listened to Tseebo, they might’ve had a chance to rescue them. I understood why Ezra didn’t want to know the truth, but i think he should’ve just for closure.

    So much that could be said when the entire series is reviewed, so I'll just make 3 points:
    1. It is important to remember when Rebels aired, season 7 of Clone Wars did not exist yet. The last time we saw Ahsoka was when she left the Jedi order in season 5, well before order 66 and Anakins fall. And the last time we had seen Bo Katan was the Season 5 double episode when she was still part of Death Watch and took part in Mauls taking of Mandalore, who subsequently murdered her mentor Pre Vizla and taking the Mandalorian throne for himself. Maul then murdered Bo Katan's sister in front of her and Obi wan. I also think this was the last time was had seen the dark saber.
    2. Watching this made me realise Homecoming and In the Name of the Rebellion Part 1 are the inverse of each other. In each, one party wants to capture/infiltrate an imperial asset for the greater good, while the other party wants it destroyed to send a message. Both with different outcomes.
    3. That even a verbal description of "Dume" is enough to still make me tear up.

    Great video, such a ranking looks intimidating to do, well done! My personal favourite is Through Imperial Eyes, I love the premise of a mystery story, where the reveal is already known for the viewer, and it‘s the villain who has to solve this puzzle, making us not exactly root for Thrawn, but we want to see the story progressing because they presented it in such an intriguing manner. Not sure if this is the best comparison, but the same feeling made me kind of root for Sabine to go with Baylan; we know it shoudn‘t be right, but it feels like it is a little. Imo, this is the type of Thrawn closest to the old Thrawn trilogy

    Absolute legend for making a whole show ranking.
    Now for The Clone Wars!
    Also, I do have 1 criticism that I have to level at the show's best episode, which is that during the ending dialogue, Sabine says that the Empire never returned to Lothal.
    Even for a minor world, it's utterly ludicrous to say that an Empire built very heavily on its image ("Fear of force rather than force itself") wouldn't try to exact revenge for a humiliation like at the end of Rebels.
    A world killing the entire Imperial garrison of a planet and destroying 5 Star Destroyers (IIRC anyway) is the kind of news that would spark uprisings everywhere because it shatters the Empire's unbeatable image, especially on a minor world like Lothal. The Empire, almost certainly knowing the Jedi are dead (Kanan being confirmed killed and Ezra missing with Thrawn) shouldn't have any hesitation in sending a task force to bring Lothal into compliance.
    Yeah, they would be very very concerned (5 star destroyers and THRAWN is a major, major loss). However, there would be more than enough racist admirals to clamour for a revenge operation to prove that they could do what the alien couldn't (and get glory for themselves), and with the Empire cracking down on the Rebellion (Especially between and after ANH and ESB), Lothal would seem a prime target.
    It's a small thing, but it really bugged me that the rebel victory was so permanent, because the Empire as we know it would've sent another fleet of Star Destroyers to exact revenge and restore their image. Even if they had to wipe the capital city from the map via orbital bombardment, to drive home the messages that the Empire wants to send to its subjects - "Even if you get your independence, it will cost you everything" (or something similar).

So many great things in the finale that you didn't get to mention like Gregor's death, a very low key moment overall that always gets me emotional because the clones got the chance to choose to fight for something they believed in. Rebels is a show I have gained a lot more love and appreciation for over the years since I watched the finale. Also seeing Rex's reaction when Ezra and Kanan return without Ashoka is so sad. Seeing Rex's PTSD is also very interesting in The Last Battle is a good touch as he really only seemed to talk more fondly of the War in previous episodes. I really love the appreciation you gave for some relatively underrated episodes. Heroes of Mandalore, especially the second part, as well as Zero Hour are some highlights of the entire series for me, so it's nice to see them get the love they deserve. Heroes of Mandalore is a superb finale to Sabine's story arc with the darksaber, even if it didn't hit the same highs as Trials of the Darksaber and Legacy of Mandalore (however, Sabine is my favorite character, so I'm kind of biased lol). As for Zero Hour, I think it is one of the best season finales of any Star Wars series. I do have to completely disagree with your opinions on Hondo. The way I see it, Hondo's interactions with characters in The Clone Wars helped him "grow a heart," so he's still a slimy con-man but he is much more mellowed out than in CW. Generally, he is one of my favorite characters in the show, (which lowkey bums me out because his appearances often coincide with Azmorigan, who I despise).
    Here are my own top 5 episodes:
    5 - A World Between Worlds
    4 - Jedi Night
    3 - Zero Hour (imma cheat and put the whole 2-parter here)

    My favorite episode? S3:E18, Secret Cargo. The formation of the Rebellion at the end gave me chills just thinking about the scene when you got to the episode. Also, Mon Mothma is my version of your AP-5. She is my favorite character in the whole sage, possibly ever, which I understand how absurd for a side character as small as her it is. I have a real soft spot for all the politics, so that certainly pays into it as well. I'm excited to see if she gets any conclusions in Ahsoka and I'm excited to see what Andor S2 does with her. In that same vein, the In The Name of the Rebellion two-parter is my favorite of all the two-parters. Seeing Mothma's philosophy on full display, and then the same with Saw, it's beautful.

    It wasn't necessarily plot armor that Vader threw Kanan instead of slicing him in half. Vader's goal was never to kill the Ghost crew. His goal was to maneuver them into stealing a specific shuttle and then make their escape so desperate that they wouldn't notice the tracking beacon he had put on the shuttle. Since his target was the larger rebel fleet, he wasn't concerned with killing what at the time were just 2 wannabe Jedi.

  • @ZekromAndYugiAndDrago123
    @ZekromAndYugiAndDrago123 Před 9 měsíci +1

    My favorite thing about Thrawn is that he actually feels like an adequate threat. While the Inquisitiors (minus the Grand one) felt like obstacles, and Vader felt like a boss fight you're supposed to lose in a video game, Thrawn was an actual threat that was consistent in his appearances. You always felt like the Rebels were on the backfoot, amd they usually WERE. They'd achieve minor victories against Thrawn, usually due to some overconfident Imperial officer being stupid, but for the most part he was consistently on top. They didn't even really WIN against him in the finale either, Ezra having to essentially sacrifice himself to just.. move Thrawn an insane distance away.
    Edit: I massively on the opinion of Filoni's changes to the force lore. It makes feel less like a static thing that the Jedi and Sith make it feel like at times and into something that every being can channel, amd channel differently, teaching others along the way. The Lothwolves use it to get around the planet and survive, humanoids use it to move things they otherwise couldn't, or manipulate minds. The force is constantly described as almost alove and Filoni really makes it feel like that

    I feel like you missed the deeper meaning in stealth strike though it was a way to bring Rex and kanan closer together but it was also the first sign of Thrawn appearing with the interdictor cruiser, he was one of the few imperials who saw how to truly use it and it is one of the plots that had a hidden detail of Thrawn coming to rebels so I think that deserves credit

    What I like the most about Rebels is Thrawn. I like Thrawn for his intelligence and ability to predict and read the mind of his enemies. He literally was almost able to destroy the entire rebel cell under the command of Sato. This shows how much intelligent Thrawn is. Thrawn also predicted Sato's move, but Constantine ignored Thrawn for personal glory.

      I object. In the Tie Defender episode the rebels stole one, flying towards him and are shooting at him. He does nothing, then pulls out his tiny pistol firing at it. He knows that there is a kill switch, but refuses to use it as he wants to see a combat test. During this test, the rebels destroy a significang amount of ships and kill a lot of his men. And because of his decision, the rebels could steal the ship and use the data from its computer. If he just used the kill switch, his men were still alive, ships still intact and the rebels would have probably died or could be captured. He was a complete idiot here and there are more cases like this.

      @@GreenNinj4 True, but he did use the kill switch eventually, which I will assume that you already know. Thrawn does have a point though, with that incident, he can see the test live, but yeah he wasted all those pilots and all those TIE fighters. Although the TIEs are cheap and the pilots expendable, he still wasted those resources. But I'm pretty sure he is aware that they were expendables. The Empire prefers quantities over qualities, so in most space and aerial combat, a lot of imperial pilots were killed.

      @@records-of-chimera True, but in the EU at least, Thrawn had two traits that seperated him from other imperials. He valued the life of the men serving him and it was important to him to not waste them and he was not arrogant. He would retreat if the enemy had the upper hand or if the victory would cost too many of his men. The Thrawn in this episode had neither of them, he was arrogant and unnecessarily wasted his resources.
      Thats why, at least to me, the EU version remains superior.

    I was always under the impression that Ezra's birthday was born on Empire Day, but not the same year the Empire formed. I could be wrong about that though.

    I have to say the season 1 finale that low is a crime. it has arguably the best lightsaber fight because throughout you can tell that kanan is worried about Ezra. at the beginning Kanan rushes and begins at the offensive, even though he has lost every fight with the inquisitor, to keep Ezra away from the conflict becuase he is left defenseless. and you can see kanan struggle with not being a fully trained jedi becuase the inquisitor is just showing off. especially kanan facing every fear he had in the season with that beginning rush is wonderful, becuase abov all else he wants to protect Ezra, which gets added on when kanan gets knighted at the temple by the grand inquisitor, I feel like it ties in to the other more important episodes more than any other episode. and it also shows contrast between obi wan and kanan. obi wan fights maul with after qui gon dies with hatred, and anger, only winning after he realizes his mistake. kanan immediatly lets go and keeps his balance, eventually making the grand inquisitor lose his balance, leading to his defeat. there can be so much more said with the episode, but it deserves better, at least top 15-20
