    I'm glad you discovered the 458 Winchester Magnum! I've had various 458's for over 40yrs and have hunted all over the world with it. The only time I had to use factory loads was in Argentina with a beautiful borrowed custom mauser I used to take a Water Buffalo. They had a dozen or so Winchester Super X 500gr RN softpoints for it. I used 3 of them! I've shot 5 caribou in Quebec with my old Browning safari grade using the Barnes 350gr tsx at 2550fps, most shots over 300yds. I've shot woodchucks and whitetails here in upstate New York with a 458. Most recently I shot a Cape Buffalo and a Red Hartebeast in Africa with a 458 using 450gr Barnes tsx bullets! I've only used a 45/70 and a 45/90 for Bison but the 458 would definitely impress a big bull! You can truly hunt anything on earth with a 458 Winchester Magnum!

      It's good to hear from some-one with some 458 experience. Yes the 358's and 375's are likley more practical for 300 yard shooting but there is something truly impressive about the big 45!

    Taken a variety of so-called buffalo but used a .404 Jeffery on a big bull bison worked great. The .458 is a killer and would be outstanding for the largest bull out there if you did your job. It's a killer. From my limited experience in the rut, a bison is a totally different animal and can be both tougher and territorial as well.

    I'm wondering if the TSX travelling at 1600fps is fast enough to reliably mushroom. Maybe a trophy bonded bear claw or swift a-frame might work better at slower velocities. Each person has their own reasons for carrying a particular rifle/cartridge but for me I don't see the advantage of using a .458 Win Mag to 300+ yards. Sure bison are big animals and require a large thump but I'm not convinced the .458 is better out to distance over a fast .30 to .35 cal. Not to mention the .458's are usually very heavy rifles to carry a foot. I think a .338 Win Mag shooting 225-250gr bonded or copper bullets using a turret style scope would be ideal for bison in those open areas you hunt.

    • @north61
      @north61  Před rokem +2

      This particular 458 shoots the X bullets like it was built for them. Waiting for woodleigh to start up again as their 400 grain spitzers might hit the sweet spot.

      @Aaron-mn8gw Před rokem +1

      @@north61 Can't argue that! Although it's a shame the .416's aren't chambered in more available rifles. With better SD's using the same bullet weights and less recoil with fatter trajectory it could be the best option if you plan to stick with the big bores.

    No doubt it will work. Big bore single killed hundreds of thousands of them with less powerful cartridges. Of course the same rifle comes in 375, which would add a good bit more range with less recoil. Glad to see you back. That delay after your having Covid was a bit worrisome.

    Very impressive group on the .458 Win Mag- that's really stretching it. I've had luck with the 300gr Barnes TSX FB on Whitetail deer out of the .458. Pushed to about 2700fps gives it about a 225 yard PBR.

      As bullet weight goes up YES. With the 300 and 350 grain bullets not that much more.

      About the same with the lighter 300 bullets, 358 Cal-250 Grns-2700 Fps, 458 Cal-300 Grns-2400 Fps. If you have a 358N don't need anything bigger for whatever in America. But another gun always more fun👍According to some calc. 358 NM recoil 30-35 Lbs/sec and 458 WM 40-45 Lbs/sec. 9 Lbs gun. But felt recoil might be about equal/close because of bullet speed. Heavy 458 about 60 Lbs/sec. Have an old 1917 US Enfield that needs Reboring/Rebarreling and 35 Imp. Wheelen it will be. Could rebarrel to 358 NM and use 300/338 Win mag cases, but Extractor and Magazine would have to be modified. To keep it simple and about 100 Fps slower the 35 Wheelen wins. Anything you shoot with either won't notice 🤣

    • @north61

      Probably not... it's the way you need to attach the front sling in a rifle that kicks this hard and these rifles shoot super well (SUB MOA)with the right loads.

    Id like to think a 375 h&h with tsx boolits should shoot flat enough and have enough energy for bison or most anything else. Recoil isn't bad either. My Sako 375 does very well at 300 yds. Idk just thinking.

    • @north61
      @north61  Před rokem +1

      Almost zero difference between the 358 Norma and the 375...easy to make these mid bores to work for bison to 300+ Yards. It takes a committed rifle looney to do the same with the 458!

    • @north61

      I have had both..the 338 has high b.c. bullets and velocity that turn it into a premier long range round with amazing long range reach and power. The 458 has remarkable short range punch.... those wide bullets hit super hard on both ends.

    350gn 458 punishes more than a 500 gn Jeffrey or 450/500 Nitro. It never caught on with PHs for that reason. 1800-2200ftps and heavy brings down a big animal. The 458 just drills a hole and wastes its energy. Too fast and too light. A Mauser long action in 500 Jeffrey with a 500gn Swift A-Frame will put a Cape Buffalo on his knees from a full charge. Better with a double rifle with a second shot sending a solid into the brain just to make sure.

    • @north61
      @north61  Před rokem +1

      The 350 grain bullets are way easier to shoot than heavier bullets due to reduced recoil and in my experience the faster you can push a bullet the more violently they expand. No need for 500 grain bullets in North America. The 350 TSX offers spectacular performance... not sure about the lower speed level of its expansion but I will find out.
