Starts off like a mystical East Indian pop lullabye and becomes an anthem/rally cry for "Screw you, I'm over you". Priceless Petty.
RIP, Tom Petty!
He was one of the good ones!
âźïž
Tom Petty Always Loved, Never Forgotten Forever missed
Still hard for me to accept that he is no longer with us. RIP
Just imagine when ya'll get to Rock-n-Roll Heaven..........all those Greats in the same venue.......hearing that music LIVE again. I'll calmly wait my turn, but I almost can't wait.
I remember right after he died that they played Free Fallin' at a University of Florida football game and the whole stadium sang along. It was an amazing tribute, but also heartbreaking.
@@snafubar5491 I'm gonna find the bar where Jimi Hendrix is jammin' with Bob Marley, John Lennon, and Prince with Keith Moon on drums.
Strangely, among notable musicians the past decade, his death affected me the most.
His passing was hard to take !!
This song has a fascinating story behind it: It started with Jimmy Iovine (Petty's one time producer) calling Tom and asking him if he knew of any good up and coming song writers, because he wants to find a new song for Stevie Nicks whom he was working with at the time. Tom said he really likes this guy named Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics (btw he is the guy on the mushroom smoking the hookah in the video). So Jimmy gives Dave a call, and all he has is the hook Dont come around here no more and the tune. As they are working with Stevie, she becomes adamant that she wants Tom to write the lyrics. So Tom comes down to the studio, listens to the track, writes the song, then steals the song, and puts it on his album Southern Accents.
Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks previously did a duet called âStop Dragging My Heart Aroundâ.
Got a few things wrong. Dave Stewart wrote this originally for Stevie as she was quoted screaming donât come around here no more at Joe Walsh whom she was dating and had just broken up with. Dave and Stevie had just had Sex prior to Joe showing up at her house.
You forgot one member of this story. Dave had the hook of "Don't Come Around Here No More" because he, Dave Stewart, heard Stevie Nicks scream it at Joe Walsh who she had been seeing and she wanted him gone. I think Stevie and Dave had a short thing also. Dave also worked with Tom on the song and brought the idea of using a sitar.
@@tennesseehusky yep, that's the complete story.
I agree with all of this history and the input, with one possible exception: The way I remember hearing it (Prof of Rock, maybe?) wasn't that Tom stole it, but Stevie realized it was a better fit for him, and after all that, said it was really "HIS song, and HE should record it."
(That's what I recall - I could be wrong.)
I saw Petty preform this song live sometime in the mid to late 90s and when the song says "give it up, STOP!" all the lights went out and the music stopped. Then a 7 to 8 foot bunny rabbit walked onto the stage illuminated by a single spotlight. He walked over to Tom, now also under the light, and hung a large gold key around his neck. The Bunny backed away into the darkness in front of the drums, the song picked right back up after a few minute break, the lights came on and the bunny was gone. I'm sure he and the Heartbreakers played a geat show that night 30 years ago, but the only things I remember from that set is this song and that bunny. đ°
In retrospect, this is an AMAZING vocal performance...
LOVE this song. Love Tom Petty's work.
His voice fits the music so well.
And that "HEY!" basically gives me chills.
Definitely not a cordial breakup.
It's bitter, like she cheated on him.
*The video was not at all controversial.
;)
Same, so same!
Petty is a national treasure. He never made a bad album. Truly one of the greats and a total original as well. No one sounds like him.
I literally cried when I heard of his passing. His music was a different kind of southern rock. His band had a big influence on my playing style. All of the Heartbreakers are super talented musicians, composers and producers.
yes
I did as well; all the greats of my youth are passing. Feels awful.
My father was a very shy musician and he introduced me to this song right before he disappeared from my life. Oh the irony.
Tom Petty was such an amazing artist his music is timeless! Brad your right Tom has a distinctive voice that is recognized in the music world. I miss him so much he is definitely missed. Tom Petty RIP.
It was written when Petty was working on his sobriety and his old using friends would come by and tempt him.....his words in an interview.
Thanks. I never knew that!
Actually it was written about stevie Nicks and one ex of hers One of the eagles forget which who kept coming by. Tom did the song Stevie heard it said it's yours Tom I can't match those vocals. ( Interview with the person who wrote it and also dated Stevie)..
@@tyrannicaltypomichaeltester that's right. It was Joe Walsh.
@@criticus100 Yep that's the one
@@tyrannicaltypomichaeltester I'll go with what I heard Tom say.
This song was written by Dave Stewart of the Eurythemics (Sweet Dreams are made of this) fame. He was the Chesire cat in the video. Originally he tried to offer the song to Stevie Nicks, she didn't feel it, and Tom gave it a shot.
Didn't he co-write it with Petty?
Dave Stewart was NOT playing the Cheshire Cat in this video! It was clearly the hookah-smoking Caterpillar!
I have the 45 of this song in the next room.
That character Tom plays is in several of his videos from this period. It was a running character, a kind of meta narrator to the album.
Petty REALLY loved making videos. It was when anything goes on MTV, and TPatH leaned into it.
Yes...this was the song from Tom Petty I wanted to be heard by you guys!!!
It's a "Leave Me Alone you're stalking me" vibe to me.
The video is kinda its own thing, Alice In Wonderland obvi, but maybe picking up on the weird inflections and quirky sound of the song. I remember seeing this as a kid and never really paying attention to the lyrics, just loving the vid!
Brad & Lex, you'll love his "Here Comes My Girl" and "Don't Do Me Like That" !!
Lex has gotten passed his voice. That's the only complaint I hear from people who don't like Tom Petty. She would enjoy every song he's ever written.
So love this video,..I swear every time it came on and I was home, I was a deer in the headlights, the whole Alice In Wonderland imagery, Tom being the mad hatter, just priceless, love it,..and him breaking things off, if you will, telling whoever don't come around, you darken my door, kinda contrast, to Brand New Key by Melanie, One Way or Another, by Blondie, or Until You Come Back To Me, Aretha Franklin, songs that would just pop in my head after listening to this, just funny,..so love this song, so miss Tom, do keep going, American Girl, the songs he did with Stevie Nicks , Stop Dragging Me Heart Around(love the lyrics.." there's people running around loose in the world, ain't got nothing better to do, make a meal of some bright eyed kid") I Will Run To You( so love this song), do keep going, Godspeed, Peace â
Thank you for the reconition yesterday, you made my day even betterđ. RIP-Tom Petty. Rock on Brad & Lex
This was when we learned that if you mix Tom Petty with the ever-trippy Dave Stewart, magic can happen.
In one version of the mythology of the song, Stevie Nicks was not only the artist who was originally supposed to collaborate with Stewart on the song, she was the source of the title. Supposedly Stewart was at her house when her newly ex-boyfriend Joe Walsh showed up and got kicked out, with Stevie telling him âdonât come around here no more.â The 80s.
I think you are right'
I've loved this tune for decades, and so glad you're watching the video in the background, it's a True Classic. đđ”âđ«đ
back in 80s the mtv videos become a huge part of music they was like mini movies
Tom was a genius. RIP
Jim Keltner, also a Wilbury, invented that synthesized drum beat you hear. One of the first songs to use a drum machine
Can't imagine this song existing without that amazing music video.
You canât miss with Tom Petty! RIP
easily among the greatest videos of all time. this jam had me glued to Tom Petty releases. a Florida Gainesville native. rock on, y'all.
First time seeing this video on MTV was eye opening. I can remember thinking that this is what all music videos should be - great music, great visuals and an underlying story.
One of his better songs IMHO, In itâs own way! It was fabulous live in concert!
He literally has dozens of great songs
@@larryzigler6812 40 years of writing all your own material, you're bound to have a few clunkers, but Tom Petty has so many more great songs than people will ever know. The only complaint I've ever heard from people who don't like him is his voice. He was a brilliant song writer. How else can you make a 40 year career out of basic Rock n Roll?
@@mgordon1100 His voice makes him Tom Petty! Been listening to him from this first day I heard him on the radio back in the later 70âs.
@@mgordon1100 I guess those sots would really hate DYLAN !!!!
@@larryzigler6812 Heck, I don't even care for Dylan that much, but I loved when The Grateful Dead covered his songs. Interesting to note, my first experience with The Dead was a two night weekend for them, and seeing Tom Petty plus Bob Dylan on the Friday night before. Alpine Valley Summer 86 weekend filled with great music.
The song was inspired by a brief romantic affair between the songâs co-writer Dave Stewart (of the British music duo Eurythmics) and the noted American singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac fame. A day after Nicks ended her relationship with guitarist Joe Walsh of the Eagles, she hosted a party at her Los Angeles home. Stewart was one of the guests she invited to the party. According to Stewart, as of that time, he didnât know who Nicks was but attended the party all the same. And by the end of the party, he and Nicks had had a romantic encounter. Later the following morning, Nicksâ former boyfriend Walsh came to her house. Stewart, who was at that time still inside Nicksâ house, heard her kick Walsh out of the house and tell him to never come to her place again. In an interview with Howard Stern, Stewart said the songâs title âDonât Come Around Here No Moreâ were the exact words Nicks told Walsh as she kicked him out of her house. Dave was still inside and heard that, which inspired him to write the song. Stevie had been trying on old Victorian clothes, which reminded Dave Stewart of Alice in Wonderland. Stewart took the song to producer Jimmy Iovine for Stevie to record, but Jimmy (Stevieâs old boyfriend also) gave it to Tom Petty instead.
Sounds like BS. It's simply not credible that he didn't know who Stevie Nicks was.
Is there any musician Stevie hasn't had an affair with đ
Tom Petty was my boy ! A musical genius!
Love the take on Alice in wonderland.
One of my favorites by Tom ,Rest well Brother.
To me, this is not just a breakup song, it's an after the divorce, "let's not try to pretend we're friends" type song.
This was the first time I saw "human" cake and it disturbed me. Now you see that shit all the time, and more realistic than ever.
Yes, he does quirky good vocals!
In 87 U Dayton arena.... This song was one of the best.... complete with a "top hat" pulled out of a vibrantly lit treasure chest.... The jam during song contained a strobe light and "dancing knight" .
Quick rundown of the backstory of this song.. so Stevie Nicks goes to the Eurythmics show in LA and Dave Stewart from The Eurythmics runs into Stevie Nicks backstage and he says I want you to be my girlfriend so she invites him back to her place for the after party, after a while he gets tired because her and a few friends were in the bathroom for a very long time doing you know what (booger dust) so he finds an open room and lays down in there then he wakes up to Stevie Nicks trying on old Victorian dresses then they had some fun in the sheets, he wakes up to her yelling at Joe Walsh (they had broken up the day before) saying "don't come around here no more". So Dave thought it would be a good template for a song, he had the hook and the Melody and brought it to Jimmy Iovine and Tom Petty and the three of them finished the song together. Pretty cool aye?!
I love Tom Petty, I wish I could have seen him live!!!
This has always been in my top songs from him, very original.
This video was the stuff of nightmares when I was a kid. I think he really wants her to get lost and it isnât sad because heâs enjoying the facts that sheâs not wanting to let go. It amuses him, but he doesnât care about her.
I'm a decent sized guy and always considered myself kind of a tough guy, I cried when I heard Tom Petty passed.
This is an "I'm absolutely done with you" song. When the love is gone and you no longer care about the other person, you just want them gone.
Best live song ever! I have seen it 9 times!
The trippy vibe and Alice in Wonderland references drew me in and I accepted the invitation to think outside the box for a few minutes.
This song gives me folk-rock vibes.
One of my favorite Tom songs
Remember "Alice in Wonderland" when you were kids? See the similarity to the video? Tom is doing a parody of that children's story, plus his own deeper story and its meaning.. RIP Tom. We miss ya. x
Great song. Crafty music video. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.†Never disappoint.
Iâm thinking about making some kind of template for commenting on reaction channels that automatically drops in the names of other songs by whatever artist being reacted to, that should be listened to, along with a statement that the guitarist, or maybe the whole band, are âunderrated.â Lol. What cracks me up is when you see a comment about someone who is world famous for what they do, and someone in the comments is lamenting how âunderratedâ they are. I have a feeling that this comment will be underrated, lol.
The video was attacked claiming it promoted violence against women and Petty responded "it promoted violence against cake"
Also my favourite outro ever.
This was my introduction to Tom Petty, VH1 had me hooked whenever they would play the video.
One of my fav TP songs! Still mourn his passing. Never got a chance to see him live.
RIP Tom Petty. Great song. Excellent video. Love it.
Great reaction, B&L.
I crank it to 11 every time this song gets to the solo. Every time
The song has a post punk/ new-wave feel until the end when it falls into standard 4/4 rock beat.
Post punk/new wave? How so? With the sitars and Eastern scales on the bass, it has psychedelia written all over itâŠ
The video was portraying Alice in wonderland
The video is an Alice In Wonderland theme. Alice, Mad Hatter, tea party. Pretty cool. My favorite part is the short guitar riff at the beginning. Very unique.
This song may be my favorite Tom Petty song, I think it's timeless and so cool...thanks for reacting to it guys! Have you listened to "Wildflowers" by him yet? That would be another good one to check out.
Current favorite song but it does make me cry like a baby
You guys should check out Saving Grace, Swingin', Something Good Comin', Rebels, The Dark of the sun, Wildflowers, I should've known it. Please and thank you.
Tom and the heartbreakers were one of the very few bands that lasted 40 yrs without making a bad song. That's very hard to find nowadays.
⊠and âRoom at the Topâ
@@TheirFinestHour yes
I remember watching this video on mtv while I was getting ready for school in the morning. Good ole days
Love the sound of the keyboards by Benmont Tench in this song.
Definitely less a 'sad' breakup song, and more an "I'm tired and done with this, please just go away"
This video and Sledgehammer are the most memorable, in my opinion.
Saw him live a few months before he left us. It was such a great show!
My favourite Petty song. RIP Tom Petty.
This was a huge hit for Petty. Kind of surprising in retrospect. It was pretty avant garde; certainly weirder than anything the Talking Heads were doing by that point.
Stevie didnât sing backup, it was her two backup singers (Marilyn Martin and Sharon Celani) and Stephanie Spruill.
@@leannmiller7153 I looked it up and you're right so I'll edit that out, but why is someone trying to sound just like her? Was that a "thing"? It's funny that, according to Wikipedia, there IS a deeper Nicks connection, something about Dave Stewart (who co-wrote the song) from Eurythmics waking up to find Nicks in his bedroom or something (?) - the article is not very well-written.
@@classiclife7204 I agree, the article on the backstory is confusing.
Back in 2012 this song was played alot on the classic rock radio đ»
one of the trippiest vids ever. Alice in Wonderland. Brilliant vid and song. Love you two!
Yes! My favorite TP song! â€ïž
We have a tribute to him @ a UF football game each year! Gotta look up âfree fallingâ stadium singing!
Looks like "alice" died here but she turns up alive in the follow up video to this called "Make It Better (Forget About Me)". Video is a sequel to this song with alice getting some payback on tom and his band at the end! Many don't even know he did a sequel video to this video.
One of the all time great videos and great ethereal song
One of my favorite MTV videos đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„
Remember Stievie Nick's is officially a Heart Breaker... gotta check out their duets.
Alive in wonderland themed video. Yes itâs probally a breakup or friendship. The line Stop waking down my street or I donât feel you anymore.
Ever since I recognized Stevie singing on the chorus, sheâs all I hear. đ«
Best Tom Petty Song EVER! :-D
I saw Tom Petty live in a co-headliner tour with Pearl Jam. Strange bill, but it worked quite well. RIP: Tom Petty. He was one cool dude. I just learned a Tom Petty song on guitar. Simple but effective. This is my favorite Tom Petty song. I love that retro drumbeat.
Thank you for sharing this with me
Stevie Nicks is on the chorusâŠthey could never say so due to contracts, but itâs definitely her and another female singer
This is the only Tom Petty song I like, and it's mainly due to the video. Great concept!
This song is based on a time when Dave Stewart spent the night at Steve Nicks house and her soon to be ex boyfriend Joe Walsh showed up, a huge fight broke out and she ended up shouting "don't come around here no more!" at him, Stewart based the song on that fight.
As I get older I find myself jamming to Tom Petty. Great review you guys rock
Love the song and Tom. Great reaction! I love your channel. Both of you have so much to add with your distinct perspectives. And I LOVE that you get to the song and/or video right away rather than chatting forever before starting - other reactors do this and I usually just forward over the chit chat till the music starts. :)
Absolutely đŻ a fav... Clip's killer 2 ,,, HEY !!
One of the most incredible songs I have ever heard live.
Tom Petty is great,,,,top 15. đđđđ
Great music. Just a classic, classic song. The original originality of Tom Petty. Fucking legend.
You tangle my emooootions
Don't forget, the song always comes before the "official" video.
I love this song and the video and there's a cool live video towards the end.
UUUUUUU, THE ALICE IN WONDERLAND TUNE, AWESOME YOU GUYS!!! :)
In my opinion, this has to be in the top five videos made !
I keep forgetting that not everyone know Alice in Wonderland.
Alice in Wonderland motifâŠ.. Safe to say Hallucinations are synthesized⊠lol
You guys should react to more Tom PettyâŠ
"Breakdown", "Listen to Her Heart", "I Need to Know", "Don't Do Me Like That", "Even the Losers", "Here Comes My Girl", "The Waiting", "Learning to Fly", "Into the Great Wide Open", "Something in the Air"

Its strange i haven heard or seen this video in 37 years since i was a kid , never could find it and now it pops up every where.
This is by far my favorite music video. I like the way they wove the Alice in Wonderland motif around the music. Not to mention it's just a kick-ass song!
Trippy Alice in Wonderland....RIP Tom
Isn't this just Tom Petty, not the Heartbreakers? I could be wrong. But he did this song with the cat from ELO. Trippy. I'm editing this comment. I meant Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics. I stand corrected.
