I saw Tom in concert once and this girl in the front row was going crazy the whole show. Half way through he walked over to her and told her was really happy to see her enjoying the show. He asked her if there's was a song she wanted to hear. I forget the song, but he said well the band isn't ready for that one and did the song acoustically for her. He put on a great show.

Tom was as authentic and genuine as it gets
after a show in Baltimore there was a bunch of autograph hounds who just resell them for $ and Tom seemed very annoyed
then saw my girl and me across the street, had his security get rid of the autograph douches and he walked over and talked with us, signed my copy of Damn the Torpedoes and Wildflowers, and talked with me about guitars for like 10min, then his wife Dana came over and reminded him they were supposed to leave 20 min ago
.I cherish the picture I got with him etc
.dudes my rock hero

Tom played the storyteller, the first tattoo artist, the reporter with the pad,Bart the roadie, and, the doctor in the birth scene.
Other characters were band members. Keyboardist Benmont Tench was the a&r man.
Drummer Stan Lynch was the bouncer.
One of the people at the table was TPATH's manager.

Johnny Deep is actually a great musician. He wanted to be a rock star before he got into movies. It was the whole reason he left Kentucky for California. He did the video for Petty returning a favor because Petty had done him a favor by opening the Viper Club for him. They're actually friends. Depp has many friends in rock. He even has his own bad Hollywood Vampires.

Actually, the Hollywood Vampires is fronted by Alice Cooper, but yes Johnny is a major part of that as well as Joe Perry. Hollywood Vampires was originally a drinking club in the 70’s at the Rainbow Room in L.A. and Cooper was one of the main guys along with Jim Morrison and Keith Moon, Mickey Dolenz, etc. they’d drink until there was only one man left standing
.or sitting at least.

This was very much a Depp in his late twenties appearing in a Tom Petty video. Lots of others are in it too. The line “Their A&R man said I don’t hear a single” refers to a man from the label who was in charge of new talent (Artistes & Repertoire) saying that they didn’t hear a record on the album worthy of being released as a single, so that’s where things went South!

The very first time I heard this song and saw the video was in a movie theatre, it was shown where the first "coming Attraction" was usually played. It took us about 2 minutes to realize it was just a song video and not a clip for a upcoming movie. STILL, the entire audience was buzzing afterwards (Chicago Suburbs summer of '91). Johnny Depp was only famous at this point for his role on the TV show "21 Jump Street" It was at the opening of "Terminator 2".

The levels of shade for a whole host of people and industries in this song, is just so choice. He had a love hate relationship with LA and this is like John tearing into Paul after they broke up lol. His voice can sound so sarcastic and it works so well here. One of my favorites from his “later” material.

In the golden age of MTV, many music videos had some kind of narrative reenactment or stylization of the song. The budgets were big and they were showcases for the song so a lot of the time they literally wrote scripts for a story to shoot to go along with the song. Tom was especially good at them, I feel.

Always a HUGE Tom Petty fan. His shows were amazing! Such a great energy in the crowd. He could really interact with large crowds.
That being said, this song was never one of his better ones (IMHO)

Moar Petty! I like him well enough, but my wife is a fanatic. No denying his talent and skill. What an amazing songwriter. Try the Travelling Wilburys... a super group with Petty, Orbison, Lynne, George Harrison, and Bob Dylan.
