Per Wikipedia Tom Petty recalled the recording of this song to Mojo magazine: "At the session George Harrison sang and played the guitar. I had a terrible cold that day, and George went to the store and bought a ginger root, boiled it and had me stick my head in the pot to get the ginger steam to open up my sinuses, and then I ran in and did the take."

There is a documentary about Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers called "Running Down a Dream" where you learn a lot about their journey and what was behind a lot of his songs. He wrote a lot about the music industry and how dishonest the "Suits" were. This song and others were directly about his fight with the music industry. Hint: he won.

    • @ericelander9936

Yes he did. I would hope musicians understand what he did to ensure artistic integrity and freedom for all artists.

I have a contrary view on this. I remember when "Damn the Torpedos" came out. I was in the Navy and sharing a party house with a couple of friends at the time and Tom Petty was on extra heavy rotation on our music system. I knew about the fight that Tom Petty was having with his record label, and the highly anticipated second album that never really materialized. It's only very recently that I came to realize that the reason I liked 'Damn the Torpedos' so much had a lot to do with the vision the record company had for Petty. They knew what was happening in the industry at the time. A new type of music was becoming popular and they had a vision for how Petty could surf this 'New Wave'. Pettty apparently didn't want it.
It was very similar to the situation with 'Margaritaville' with Jimmy Buffet. Buffet was fresh face in the music industry at the time. He hated what the producer was doing when Margaritaville was being recorded - but the producer had a vision and the producer's vision made Margaritaville the biggest hit of Buffet's career.
You can't argue with a person who says that they value being true to their own vision over success in the industry. But if an artist does care about success in the business, they may do well to listen to those folks whose expertise can help them achieve it.
Perhaps it's the pressure of being successful that artists rebel against. I know I would find that frightening. It's scary not to be in control. Perhaps like Beau, in the movie 'Country Strong', it's better to stick with the life you know, and are comfortable with, than to deal with the uncertainties of a pressure-cooker industry, where, in spite of everybody's best intentions, it might amount to not much, when all is said and done.

Obvz can't speak to what he wrote this song about but Tom Petty took on the entire music industry when he was a young struggling/emerging artist, sued his record company, fought for musician's rights, made it easier for all musicians to earn their due for publishing rights. It was a real game changer. He's wildly under-appreciated his impact on the industry and the path he carved for everyone who came up behind him. And also, and I hope this goes without saying but gotta say it anyway, he was just a supremely talented musician and a delightful human being.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers were a great American rock band formed in 1976. They had a lot of great hits such as "American Girl", "Refugee", "The Waiting", "Learning To Fly", "Mary Jane's Last Dance", "Don't Do Me Like That", "You Got Lucky", "Change Of Heart", "I Need To Know" & "Listen To Her Heart". In 1989 Petty went solo & had quite a few hits such as "I Won't Back Down", "Runnin' Down A Dream", "Free Fallin'", "A Face In The Crowd" & "Yer So Bad". He was also part of the supergroup "Travelling Willburys" in 1988.

My favorite Tom Petty song 🎵 Written by him + Jeff Lynne. Produced by them and Mike Campbell.
The music video shows late Tom and late George Harrison on guitars 🎸 🎸 , Jeff Lynne on a bass guitar. These are true to the studio 🎙 Ringo Starr was in the video 📹, BUT he did NOT play in the studio: Philip Jones played drums 🥁
In 2017, Jason Aldean was starting to sing when a mad man shot at the crowd in Las Vegas. RIP to the fallen. The next day, Tom Petty passed away. Later that week, Jason Aldean sang this on SNL. 5 year anniversary this October.
Other version. Jeff Lynne sings lead. Sometimes in ELO concerts, he sings this and other songs he wrote for other singers.
Suggested video 📹: Tom Petty sings Face in the Crowd.
RIP George Harrison and Tom Petty 😢

I love this song. Every time I hear this, I remember a night at a local establishment. The band gave a shout-out to the US Marines in attendance. It was the Corp's birthday. "This one goes out to the Marines out there!" Yeah. Makes sense. They NEVER back down. God bless them all. Anyway. That's what this song makes me think about.

You should check out the documentary "Running Down a Dream" to get the skinny on this tune and many other things related to Tom and the boys. It's long; about 2 + hrs, but you won't notice b/c it is SO worth it. Basically, this song came out when he was fighting with his record company over multiple issues. I'd say his message to them was pretty clear...
Also, while Tom and the boys have many classics, going back to the 70's, don't forget some of their later albums, like Echo, Mojo, and Highway Companion. They have some really great tracks, such as "Swingin", "Rhino Skin", "Free Girl Now", "Saving Grace" & "Square One".

Tom Petty has a long history of standing up against the music industry. When albums were $8.98 for many years and Tom was about to have a killer album released, the company wanted to change prices to 9.98, with his album being first. Tom delayed the release of the album nearly a year in protest, until they kept the price held. He fought against producers and the money machine his whole career. He never backed down.

Thoughts on the "There ain't no easy way out" part... When someone stands up for themselves and the things that they believe in, there are always others around saying variations on "oh why don't you just do what they want you to do it would be easier"... by saying "There ain't no easy way out" I always took it for him saying "Even if I took the easy way out as you suggest I wouldn't be able to take it easy on myself for betraying my beliefs". But it's music so it's always open to interpretation.

Tom was fighting the record company for rights to his music. He almost went bankrupt fighting but he won.

He wrote this song to the person who burned his house down while him and his family were inside. The arsonist was never caught.

Some were saying on You Tube that the real target had been Ronnie James Dio,who lived nearby. They said that Wendy Dio could tell something,if she were asked.

It's just my opinion but I think he was right the first time: For people who take head on the responsibilities of life within this often trying battlefield of the world, "He's not backing down".
But the other interpretation os possible too.

In my mind I kinda made this Ukraine's theme song when I heard this Tom Petty declaration a few months ago. Standing for Ukraine -
🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦 Stand Your Ground, Don't Back Down!!! 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦

Hope he’s got a couple new fans with y’all. Just ‘this album. Check out older stuff. I saw him in concert 27 times and it was always fantastic. If that don’t say something I don’t know what does!

Seriously overplayed on the radio and the video was quite popular on MTV. They did play this on VH1, then on VH1 Classic and now on MTV Classic. I should know, I have at least 64 VHS music video tapes with nothing but music videos from MTV Classic. BJ is right about his mindset. Film suggestions: Short Circuit 1 and 2, Cocoon, Batteries Not Included, and Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.
