This song has a fascinating back story which may help explain the oddity of it. So Jimmy Iovine (Tom's producer on a few album's) was producing a solo album for Stevie Nicks. He called Tom and asked him if he knew of any new good song writers. Tom told him that he really like this guy Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics, so Jimmy got Dave to come down and work with Stevie. Dave showed up with the chorus of the song "don't come around here no more" to this Indian style sound, and Stevie loved it, but was pitching a fit that she wanted Tom to come write the rest of the lyrics. Tom flew out to New York, came in wrote the lyrics, and left with the song. BTW, Dave Stewart is the guy with the hookah on the mushroom in the video.

You forgot the part where Dave probably slept with her. Then in the morning heard her throwing Joe Walsh, who she'd broken up with the night before, out of her house and she said "Don't come around here no more".

The story behind this song is crazy!
This was written mostly by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, based on an encounter with..... Stevie Nicks! There is even rumor she sang some of the backup vocals, but with no credit.
Anyways! So in the heyday of the Eurythmics, when Sweet dreams are made of this was huge, after a show, Dave Stewart is walking backstage and Stevie Nicks is standing in a doorway. Dave didn't know who she was, just that he thought she was hot and wanted to get to know her.
So, they get to talking, she invites him back to her place with some other people. While Stevie and them are in the bathroom doing il legalities LOL he walks around checking out the place, eventually falling asleep on Stevie's bed.
He said he woke around 3am to the sound of rustling, looked up, and Stevie is trying on different Victorian outfits in front of him. So cut to the chase, they hooked up.
Next morning, before he can get out of there, who shows up knocking at her door.... None other than Joe Walsh (Eagles). Who Stevie had just broken up with only a day and a half before! Joe is there to get his stuff. Dave is inside wondering how the heck he got himself into this situation.
SO....... Stevie, to get Joe to go away, knowing she can't let him in, begins screaming, DON'T COME AROUND HERE NO MORE, GET OUT OF HERE, GO AWAY, DON'T COME AROUND HERE NO MORE!!!
Dave Stewart took that line, and eventually created the song. He then teamed up with Tom Petty eventually to release the song.
The rock and roll life was crazy!!
Dave did present the song idea to Stevie, but she came up with different lyrics, and apparently got mad at some point when it didn't fit was Dave was thinking for the song. So she was aware of what the true reference was.

I was at a Tom Petty concert in Atlanta the year the Braves beat the Twins in the world series. He came downstairs from the open sky in his Mad Hatters costume. When he hit the stage and the song ended, he gave the current score and the Braves were ahead. Everybody joined in chanting, don't come around here no more, "to the Twins fans". Awesome.

We have seen Roger Waters, AC/DC, Ted Nugent, Def Leppard, Poison, Rush, Jethro Tull, Red Hot Chili Pepers, Metalica, Steely Dan, Papa Roach, Journey & many more. Now I'm 68 and he is 38 and him and his wife are taking me to see Greta Van Fleet in March. Great times.

I have a great Tom Petty story. The year before he passed he played Jazz Fest here in New Orleans and stayed in the hotel I work at. The day before his show he decided he wanted to hot box in the elevator. He smoked his whole joint riding up and down. Everytime someone got off the elevator they would go to their room and call security about some dirty hippie smoking on the elevator. Security would go and see how he was doing but never asked him to leave the elevator. It was hilarious because all day I would hear complaints from all these old rich people at the bar about it. Then when I would explain who he was they would instantly switch to how nice he was and how excited they are to see him at Jazz Fest.

It really had nothing to do with his addiction and was written for Stevie Nicks. Look up interviews and even Wikipedia about the song. It was based on one statement as she dumped her boyfriend Joe Walsh as she was heard by the co-writer “don’t come around here no more” as she kicks him out.

This was released during the height of New Wave and Tom Petty hated they had to change their rock sound to stay current during that time period. I still think this era of music from them was fantastic.

    • @jimiewilliams7623

If Tom said that, he must have been paranoid. Maybe, it was just his label. The height of New Wave was around 1981, and this song came out in 1985. The Power Station and John Mellencamp, were topping the charts, and the last big wave was the New Romantic Movement, which reached it's peak with Duran Duran's Arena, in 1984. From 1985 until about 1991, the airwaves were dominated by pop and hair metal. Prince, Madonna, Tears for Fears, Level 42, Van Halen, Bon Jovi and Mellencamp. Stuff like that. Tom fit right in. His record label must have been ignorant.

@@jimiewilliams7623 New Wave peaked in 83 and Tom did say that in a 90's interview.
