    Actually if the alternator is working (charging) you can change the decoupler pully on the front. That's what is usually creating the noise. It runs about $80 at napa. It's relatively easy to change to. The alternator runs about $300.
    The decoupler can sometimes sound like a bad water pump also but you'll hear that the noise is on the opposite side of the engine from the w/p.

      Sir John, we have the same engine... how many miles on your 2.4 when you first noticed it? Are able to reproduce while parked? When driving off? does turning the A/C or heater off help? High octane gas help? Were able to resolve it? Was it caused by low oil level damage?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  Před 7 lety +1

      First thing we need to do is see if it is belt driven. If you can get the noise to happen all the time when the engine is idling.....then remove the drive belt and see if it goes away. If so then its belt driven. The most likely issues will the alternator, either idler pulley or belt tensioner pulley. If the noise is still there with the help removed then it might be a trans related noise such as trans pump. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe

    MotorCity Mechanic 08 Jeep Patriot 170000+ mi 5MT SPORT I have a question... I think I heard my car making this sound almost a week ago.. it continued and wouldn't let up. Until I was leaving work and then without warning at the traffic light, my car stopped running. I looked in the dash and the last code I saw was FUSE warning. Now thinking it was the battery, we tried to jump the jeep but the cable was getting very hot and we checked to see if it was the terminals, but the terminals were correct. With the connection it wouldn't even come on let alone turn over. Is it possible that the whole car will not get any power if the alternator is fried?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  Před 7 lety

      Daddio Green The alternator may be shorted out internally and draining the battery and causing other issues. I recommend taking the alternator off and see if any issues why turning the pulley. Also look for that rust colored dust on the front. I feel it's most likely going to be your issues.

  • @cmdaniels55
    @cmdaniels55 Před 6 lety +2

    Hey buddy, u helped me out one year ago with this exact problem. I replaced alternator and issue solved. Yesterday i cranked up the car and the whine was back after one year and 10000 miles on a remanufactered alternator. Do you think that bearing could go out so soon and that this is the same problem. Big fan. Thanks

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  Před 6 lety +1

      Reman aftermarket alternators are always questionable. They are one reason why I try to not use them when ever possible. Try to narrow the source of the noise and if needed....remove the belt and turn the pulleys by hand to see if you can tell which might be at fault. Thanks for returning and for the question.

    Hey thanks for the video, I'm currios I have a 2010 Jeep compass is Normal for the engine to sound kinda of like a diesel? Like a continuous ticking sound? I thought it was normal but I heard someone's 08 compass and it didn't have the ticking noise?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  Před 6 lety

      It depends on how loud Its something I would have to hear in person to be sure to see if its abnormal and if so....to also figure where its coming from.

    • @phillippardo5712
      @phillippardo5712 Před 6 lety +1

      It definitely seems to be coming from the fuel rail on top, I listened with a screwdriver on top if the valve cover and didn't hear it, but when I put it to the fuel rail. Bingo definitely seems like it's there. I was thinking injectors..? I could if sworn I've heard newer 4 cyl. Engines sound similar. Really wondering if it's normal..? Btw thank you for replying!

    How long does it take for one of these engines to start developing this problem? I've got a '12 Chrysler 200 with this engine in it - right now, it sounds fine but that's only because it has around 18k miles on it (got it low-mileage, and since I'm a homebody it has stayed low haha) Thanks!

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  Před 8 lety

      +Ernest Perry Hey Ernest....it depends. It may never have this noise or issues. Just depends on the bearings. I wouldn't say that everyone will eventually need to have the pulleys or alternator replaced but I would think it could possibly happen over time. I actually haven't done one myself ever since the video was made. I use to see then from time to time.....but not lately. That doesn't mean that the independent shops aren't seeing them. Once most vehicle start getting miles on them.....they start going from the dealership to the independent repair shops so that can explain why I don't see them much any more. Thanks for the comment and make sure to subscribe

      This is not an engine internals situation. This is external accessories wearing out and are easily and affordably replaced. 10 years in and these 2.4 engines are proving themselves to be reliable engines, even in larger cars like the Dodge Journey.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  Před 6 lety +1
