  • "The Stories of Three People" gives us the incites of three individuals who had there own dealings in the early morning hours just prior to Pauline being killed. Lavon Plunk, Pauline's best friend told of taking Pauline home that night and waiting for her and the children to come out when Buford arrived at home. a shot was fired and Lavon, fearing for her life left the area.
Diane Vance would tell people that she heard a "pop" and then saw Buford carry Pauline to his car. Arnie Hardy, today's guest was of those she told her story to.
Ward Moore, the the McNairy County Coroner told a story of being dispatched to the Pusser residence by Carl Pusser in those same early morning hours to stop a fight between Buford and Pauline.
In this window of less than three hours, these three people became a part of one of Tennessee's most notable murder cases.

My dads cousin was newly married and her husband was hurt at work and was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital when Buford was in the hospital. His room was a few doors down from her husband. She told the story on a visit in early 2000. We weren’t even talking about Buford Pusser. She said while talking about her husbands accident “ while Ike was in the hospital that’s sheriff Pusser was a couple doors further down the hallway. “. She didn’t say if she met anyone or who might have been there. She was almost 70 when we talked and I looked up the time frame and if she was right. Her and my mothers birthdays were on August 25th and I’ve read he was in the hospital close to a month after the ambush on August 12th. Great channel Mike. Keep up the great videos.

I started in law enforcement in 1978 and retired in 2006. The technological advances made during my career are absolutely amazing. In 1967, especially in rural Tennessee, law enforcement was probably quite primitive compared to today's methods and I would bet that the Tennessee state agency that processed the crime scene had very little of the equipment and know-how like we see today in such TV crime shows like "Forensic Files" et al. I am not sure why the state agency did not pursue a more in-depth investigation at the time back in 1967 but it was a different time back then and perhaps the thought of a sheriff shooting his wife and then wounding himself seemed so unbelievable (as it still does to many today) that like many juries have acquitted mothers that have murdered their own children because they simply cannot fathom a mother killing her own kids. Self-inflicted wounds used to coverup a crime is not unusual.

That or the coroner knew that if he opposed Pusser and tried to have him arrested nobody would have backed him up .
And then he might have been in a deadly shootout with a dangerous corrupt sheriff.
Most of the county thought of Pusser as a hero and even if the coroner managed to survive a confrontation with Pusser the county would have backed Pusser.

Great episode. It’s something I don’t think we ever could explain to today’s younger generation. Times was like daylight to dark very different back in them days. A County Sheriff had just about if not more power than our local Judge who really was a local lawyer everyone knew at end of his practicing life using that position as like a retirement fund in my area. Stuff like that happened a lot. But people left their doors unlocked until like early 1980’s in my area. A neighbor had a death in the family they would be pots of food left on their front porches for family members always would be coming in for the funeral to eat. Somebody in need we personally in neighborhood everybody took care of them. It’s amazing just how much times has changed from them days. I carried many pots of food for my Grandma to her neighbors front porch when I was little boy. I was the oldest grandson.
But everybody I feel was lot happier & got along a lot better.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Buford live in Adamsville? Why didn't Lavon call the local Adamsville Police Department if she heard a gunshot at the Pusser residence? Also why didn't Diane call the Adamsville Police Department and tell what she saw when it was the last time she saw her mother alive? If Buford and Pauline were separated at the time who was taking care of Mike and Dwana? Did they stay alone without adult supervision until Buford came home each night?

This will be a long post and is pure speculation but something that I’ve wondered about for years.
When Pauline was killed Buford carried a .41 Magnum from what I understand. After the murder the gun was supposedly covered in blood and tissue and was sent to Robertsons Trading Post to be cleaned and was returned back to Buford. At some point later on that gun was supposedly stolen and never seen again.
What are the chances that Buford used that gun to kill Pauline and then held the muzzle next to his own face and fired a shot to cause his injuries along with a mixture of his and Pauline’s blood and tissue on the gun?
The muzzle blast from a .41 Magnum would do a lot of damage without any danger of the actual bullet hitting you. Then when the gun gets “stolen” all evidence is gone with the gun?
Mike, does that sound plausible or just a far fetched story?

@@bufordpusser1122 Well there goes my theory. I read on a post somewhere when trying to figure out whether he had a Model 57 or 58 .41 that he was still carrying it when the “ambush” occurred. There’s so much information out there it’s hard to know what’s true and what’s make believe anymore. I’ve never been able to determine for sure which model .41 magnum he carried. Most say it was a Model 58 in nickel with adjustable sights but from what I’ve found Smith and Wesson never made a Model 58 with adjustable sights so it would have had to be a Model 57 yet some swear it was a 58. I’ve also read it was a Colt .41 magnum but colt never factory produced a .41 magnum that I can find.

If there were shell casings all around the car they would have had to be stopped. Or were the shell casings planted. Did he drive to that location shoot pauline the
Second time as she may have ready been expired to make a splatter in the car while shooting windows out and shooting the car all over then shooting himself. Where did the gun go that he had or did he have an accomplice take the guns away from the scene. If she was indeed shot twice then the trajectory will tell all and if he used a smaller gun to kill her and the military type gun to shoot car up and shoot her again in the process.

At the bridge, Buford claimed both vehicles were moving. At the second site Buford claimed both were stopped side by side and that he reached out and grabbed the barrel of the carbine.

Pauline's murder was a state crime and outside the purview of the FBI. Two sheriffs who followed Buford said the local politics played a big part of them not pursuing it further, as half the people in the county loved Buford while the other half hated him. It was a hot potato issue that no one wanted to touch. There is some form of closure for Pauline's siblings.
