  • While "Walking Tall" was very entertaining, the movie by it own account, was a fictional account of certain events in the life of McNairy County Sheriff Buford Pusser.
When you learn the real story, you find that although Buford allegedly "cleaned up the state line and McNairy County," no one knows of a club or beer joint he actually closed down. Also, no one seems to know of a single "State Liner" that Buford sent to prison.
Now, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has re-engaged in the investigation of the murder of Buford's wife Pauline Pusser as so much new information has been uncovered in the case.
Join us as we take a look at the REAL story of legendary McNairy County Buford Pusser, as told by those who were there and lived their own parts in this intriguing story. You will be shocked and surprised by the details of whatacttally happened.
SUGGESTION: Start with episode #1 and work your way forward as the story is told in chronological order for proper context.

Well, the sound of a 4” or 6” .41 over that of a J or K frame snub nose, through a wall, would be hard to distinguish. The short barrel is like a snort muffler, it’s loud. The early.41 only wad two loadings, a heavy for hunting and a reduced power semiwadcutter for LE usage. And all firearms going off indoors a loud, the sound reverberates from the walls and ceiling. It does look like Buford was firearms savvy, the S&W .41 Magnum only came out in April of 1964. It was originally billed as the perfect police duty weapon. .44 power, 357 recoil. He must have had one of the first ones made.

I'm not a firearms expert but I can tell the difference between a magnum being fired over a .38.

Yep..I own 44 magnums and 41 magnums..a 41 magnum fired from any direction has a way bigger boom than a 38..especially indoors..

My mom's family was born and raised in McNairy county but she raised her family and me in Michigan she got out of that area in about 1960 and we go there as kids on vacation and we could tell they don't have much law down there and everybody pretty much does what they want compared to Michigan..... I had an Uncle Robert isbell that was a game warden and he lived in Corinth Mississippi and he was a game warden from the 60s 70s and 80s and I'm telling you they had a pretty nice place for my uncle just being a game warden he would talk about the stills and that they had no problem with him and that's as far as it went. I like my Uncle Robert he did work for the railroad before that and he lost half of his foot due to a railroad accident he take his shoe off and show us the stump and he smoked a lot of cigars.... And my Aunt Jean was the best Southern cook ever... My Uncle Robert had a catfish pond and he liked raising catfish and having fish fries was really good.......😊😊😊😊

Its like former McNairy County Sheriff James Opal Gray told me. If you don't go the the state line you won't have any trouble as they won't come looking for you.
I think most counties have that one trouble spot that has a reputation, but if it hadn't been for the fictitious movie "WALKING TALL," we would have never heard of the state line.

I live near a county line. All it takes is every 30 to 50 years is 2 sheriff’s of the counties affected get into it over where the line really is? Then out comes Survey crew. If it do change it’s only a few inches if that. It’s really not worth the big fuss they make it out to be.

The movie, Walking Tall was not a documentary on Buford Pusser, just like other movies that based on true events Hollywood changes or embellishes what actually happened. In this case , the bloodier the better. Pusser did not write the script. The movie was made to entertain an audience.

I never met Buford. I have met and made friends with his daughter, Dwanna. She owned and operated Pusser’s Restaurant in McNairy County, before her untimely demise. She was a remarkable LADY. Buford could be proud of such a daughter !!! Anyone would be. We had conversations about her father and the corruption in McNairy County which continued until her death. She was disgusted by ALL FORMS OF CORRUPTION. Such is the moral base of a PROPER lady raised by a PROPER set of parents. If her father was a corrupt bastard, as is inferred by these videos, she wouldn’t have grown up with the values she exhibited ! She raged against the current Sheriff’s Department head PROTECTING METH LABS, which became the new bootlegging of the 21st Century. Yes. She absolutely believed the sheriff was protecting the meth labs FOR PROFIT, and this greatly upset her. May she and her INCORRUPTIBLE father rest in peace, and through the mercy of our LORD AND SAVIOR enjoy the sanctity of Heaven, where Tow Head and Louise will NEVER SEE. AMEN

No one including Dennis Hathcock and myself are defending Louise Hathcock's illegal acts. I am simply trying to explain that Buford was a corrupt sheriff, and like the state liners, was a big part of the problem. The law applies to everyone...including sheriffs. It appears that the reason Buford killed her was his own personal greed. That is not a justification for killing her.
