  • Today I went to Prague's Biggest Flea Market and went looking for old video games and wrist Watches. I did end up finding a Swiss Watch. Hang around and see what exactly I came away with.
Garage Sales and Estate Sales are popular in America as ways for people to sell their old things for a little bit of money instead of donating to a thrift store. Here in Czechia these kinds of sales are not common. People do from time to time pack up their Skoda and bring old dvds, music, clothes and accessories to the flea market to sell. Tell me how you get rid of your old things in the comment section.

I used to have a collection of Swatch watches way back in high school. I loved the clear ones. Sadly, they have all deteriorated and fallen apart. Just 1 more thing I love about CR is that people still wear watches. Even young people.

Yeah they dont all wear Apple watches like Americans.. I get enough notifications on my iphone I dont need it strapped to my wrist as well 😃 I had some of those rubber Swatches back in the 90s (christmas gifts). I never had one that was steel before. I need to get a battery for this watch.

@@ThePragueExpat0 It's gotten to where I wouldn't even know where to buy a watch battery where I live. All the watch stores closed, and even stores which sell a limited amount of watches- like Macys, don't even carry batteries anymore. Last trip I was wearing a Traser and the battery went dead and I was able to get a new one installed in minutes at the Palladium.
I think a big cultural difference is more personal communication in CR than the USA. The pub culture alone brings people out of their houses to socialize, and people talk face to face, instead of just sending messages. I have a theory this is why crime is low, because people aren't so hidden behind computers or screens and they learn to be with others.

Do they? Really? I wear a watch and I feel like the odd one. I just like to use my mobile as little as possible and I hate taking the phone out just to know what time it is. And when I have some spare time, which I don´t have much, I like to know the time and be efficient.

When I had that problem in America I would buy the battery on Amazon and install myself. I would make enough money for a vacation every summer just reselling video games and watches from garage sales. I love ebay.
Interesting idea on the low crime. Either way I agree I think the screens are definitely making humanity as a whole less happy.

@@caroline4323 I am more aware of other guys wearing watches and I would say definitely guys wear watches more here than the US. In an English class I was teaching recently we were talking about Prim watches and the history with the kind of imposter Prim company that sells low quality watches and we went around the room and like 90% of the guys were wearing watches .Most of the women had some form of smart watch which is fine.. just not for me.

If only a baterry is needed I cannot imagine to not replace it before displaying them on sales. Yeah it would be half of the price go up but I bet you would pay 150 if those would work on the spot. So it would leave little suspicion in my mind :)

I will update if it ends up working or not. I have bought a lot of watches in the past in similar condition.. sometimes people know and they’re just scamming and sometimes they’re just too lazy to check

Oh, I also have a theory about flea markets in central and eastern Europe. If you have younger people selling goods at flea markets the nation is doing well. If you have mostly elderly people selling their heirlooms, the nation is struggling, because the elderly people are selling to buy food or things they need to survive, whereas younger people selling at flea markets are more likely entrepreneurs or getting rid of stuff.

interesting. I had alot of friends my age selling in flea markets on the West Coast of the US. It does feel like the average seller here is alot older than what I expeienced in Washington State and California... I dont think I went to a flea market outside of those states in my adult life. I used to go to some with my parents in Michigan as a kid but I dont remember much of that.

The market doesn´t look very... adventurous...
When I was in England there were regular flea markets, auctions, plus a charity shop at every other corner. In US you have garage sales and big shops with used stuff (what´s the name :)?). I miss it here. We should have something like that. Yeh, people sell, buy and donate stuff online but... I wish we had this part of culture here...

I have gone to some flea markets in some villages her in CZ that are better than this because they are more like the car boot sales like in the uk.. People just pulling up in a field with the car full of junk from their house. Sometimes there are some really cool stuff in those flea markets.. they are always way smaller though. I still enjoy the Prague flea market though as long as I only go a couple times a year.
Are you talking about Goodwill? Yeah I miss that part of the US. Going to those stores and going to garage sales and estate sales (when someone dies and they sell all the deceased possessions 😱) is very fun.

    Hi, Daniel,
today, I would like to ask you a vocabulary thing. I suppose that my question could be applied to all variants of english (UK/US/AUS/IND), but why you guys use the general, non-specialized term "video game"? I mean, when comparing to the czech vocabulary, "videohra", which is the same as "video game", it reffers to some console, which is connected to TV, but we have also more specialized vocabulary "hra na Playstation" "PC hra" ... ? The english language doesn't distinguish the platform, for which the game is designed?

    • @ThePragueExpat0
      @ThePragueExpat0  Před rokem +1

Its kind of the same. The rules are not strict with this at all. When we are talking about video games in general across all platforms and being non specific we say "Video Games". If we are talking about specific games for specific platforms we will say Playstaion games (same as Playstation hra) or Playstation Video Games (depending on the person). For PC we usually just say PC Games.. Never "PC Video games". PC games are significantly more popular here than in the US. When I was a kid/ teenager we all had consoles (specifically the PS2 and PS3 were the more popular consoles in my friend group) I never liked the original XBOX. If my channel was just for "gamers" I would probably not say "Video Games" so much and shorten it down.
I hope that answered your question.
