    Deluxe Edition: tinyurl.com/32vxm475
    Product Description:
For the first time ever, a very special edition of the forerunner to The Lord of the Rings, illustrated throughout in color by J.R.R. Tolkien himself and with the complete text printed in two colors. The Silmarillion fills in the background which lies behind the more popular work, and gives the earlier history of Middle-earth, introducing some of the key characters.
The Silmarilli were three perfect jewels, fashioned by Fëanor, most gifted of the Elves, and within them was imprisoned the last Light of the Two Trees of Valinor. But the first Dark Lord, Morgoth, stole the jewels and set them within his iron crown, guarded in the impenetrable fortress of Angband in the north of Middle-earth.
The Silmarillion is the history of the rebellion of Fëanor and his kindred against the gods, their exile from Valinor and return to Middle-earth, and their war, hopeless despite all the heroism, against the great Enemy. It is the ancient drama to which the characters in The Lord of the Rings look back, and in whose events some of them such as Elrond and Galadriel took part.
The book also includes several shorter works: the Ainulindalë, a myth of the Creation, and the Valaquenta, in which the nature and powers of each of the gods is described. The Akallabêth recounts the downfall of the great island kingdom of Númenor at the end of the Second Age, and Of the Rings of Power tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age, as narrated in The Lord of the Rings.
Tolkien could not publish The Silmarillion in his lifetime, as it grew with him, so he would leave it to his son, Christopher Tolkien, to edit the work from many manuscripts and bring his father’s great vision to publishable form, so completing the literary achievement of a lifetime. This special edition presents anew this seminal first step towards mapping out the posthumous publishing of Middle-earth, and the beginning of an illustrious forty years and more than twenty books celebrating his father’s legacy.
This definitive new edition includes, by way of an introduction, a letter written by Tolkien in 1951 which provides a brilliant exposition of the earlier Ages, and for the first time in its history is presented with Tolkien’s own paintings and drawings, which reveal the breathtaking grandeur and beauty of his vision of the First Age of Middle-earth.

I already have several versions of the Silmarillion (including the previous deluxe version which is lovely but not illustrated). I will definitely get one of the new ones but am not sure which. Funnily enough, I actually prefer the colour scheme of the standard edition. However, the larger maps look good and I am steadily building my collection of deluxe Tolkien. I already have the book of Tolkien's pictures which you mention (although most of those are illustrations for the Hobbit or Lord of the Rings, and only a few from the Silmarillion), so I was wondering how many of the illustrations are likely to be things I have not seen before and how many are actual sketches/pictures as opposed to symbols/heraldic devices etc. Can you/anyone help?

I've collected a lot of the recent editions. The deluxe ones were usually presents, the "regular" ones I got myself. I love his writing and I prefer collecting multiple versions of his stories to buying new books I probably won't enjoy (not to say I won't enjoy them). I love having different "sets". For reading I prefer the regular hardbacks as I find them easy and comfortable to use and I don't mind smudging them up too much. I also really enjoy the recent audio books narrated by Andy Serkis and also Martin Shaw, as someone who drives a lot, it's great to be able to "read" Tolkien's stories while driving and the poetry in particular also feels more effective when performed.

I Love Tolkien editions. It’s the only set of books next to maybe Frank Herbert’s Dune that I‘m more than okay with having several editions.
I think all the different illustrations have their pros and cons. Tolkien’s own art is great because, well, ultimately it’s his imagination and he has the authority on it and some of his expressionistic artwork is really amazing. Meanwhile Alan Lee is of course the person to define what Tolkien’s works are „supposed“ to look like. However I also thoroughly enjoy Ted Nasmith, because he had nothing to do with the movies and I like the alternative versions of the world he depicts. John Howe is also awesome, but it seems there is comparatively little published, which is a shame since he also has a great eye for Tolkien. The Middle-Earth Traveller has some great art in there.
Generally, I enjoy most people‘s art and find it helpful to distinguish the books from the films, which were my first exposure to Tolkien.

Hello there, I enjoyed this look! I know I've asked this before on another video, but what is that song near the end at 15:30? I received a message to contact you, but never got a reply.

16:30 picked up? In Canada the deluxe edition is not available on anywhere until Jan 10. The regular edition does not exist at all on Amazon except a copy you can order that is shipped from Australia. However it is available in Indigo Chapters book stores now. Distribution seems a little messed up

Have you reviewed the LOTR regular and deluxe Tolkien illustrated edition books as well?

I'm currently reading the Deluxe Edition of The Silmarillion (my first-ever Tolkien book), and I'm really enjoying it. Right now, I'm on Chapter 7 of the Quenta Silmarillion. I can't wait to pick up The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. I also plan to get The Children of Hurin, Beren and Luthien, The Fall of Gondolin, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, and The Complete History of Middle-earth plus The Nature of Middle-earth. I know I want the 2021 Deluxe Edition of The Lord of the Rings, which is on my birthday list, and I know there was a deluxe version of The Hobbit released in, I think, 2004. I wonder if I should wait to see if that gets a re-release or if I should just get the 2004 version?

Are Tolkien's notes on display at Marquette University? I've been meaning to check it out but was worried I would drive over and I wouldn't be able to see anything.

They are! The exhibit is open until December 23rd, so if you're going to drive over and see it, do it soon! It's a magnificent exhibit.

This is the most beautiful book I've ever seen. Honestly, the non-deluxe edition looks way cooler...but some of the selections of art are not what I would have expected. I think there were better ones left out. Also, showing the Sauron Eye image with only one of the Elven Rings is really weird, especially for the purpose they gave it.

The good thing about being a non-native English speaker is I can get Ted Nasmith's edition in Spanish and Tolkien's Illustrations in English. The Deluxe Edition looks amazing!
