  • Here is an epic 4-part solo trading between the Brecker Brothers, Barry Finnerty and George Whitty on the Brecker Brothers tune "Sponge", from live at the Mt. Fuji Festival in Japan. Transcription for the Trumpet and Tenor sax are in Bb transposition and as you would read it on the concerning octaves (you'll notice that when Michael Brecker takes over the solo of Randy, he uses the note Randy ended with in the same octave but it's notated an actave higher). Guitar and keyboard solo transcription are for C-instruments.

@@MrDaraghkinch Huh, you know what you just summed up my life. No joke, never been to a party after the first few because I didn't enjoy it. I avoid social gatherings and avoid making new friends. But I know how to homebrew steroids, make websites, make AI, make viruses, tinker with AC units as well as rebuild and repair them (sometimes), I write very well even though it may not look like it due to the minimal effort I put into my comments. And I study pharmacy and medicinal chemistry. I know that sounds very sketchy but I have legitmate interest not criminal. But I smoke a lot of weed, gunna buy a motorcycle, I'm getting buff (havent used steroids yet though), I'm decently strong, I like going places and doing things but without other people and I practice boxing so I'm not nerdy right? I just think the whole nerdy thing is stupid because it's a literal stereotype. Not everyone fits into it, in fact probably most people don't. The ones who do usually grow out of it from either pressure or they're tired of being weak. Music is just music and anyone can enjoy it. Lots of people only like rap because it's what is popular. Lots of people only like certain genres because they aren't popular. But when you find someone who likes something because they enjoy it they might not share with as many people that they enjoy it in fear of being judged. Which is lame but it happens a whole lot.

As you can see, the transcription for the Trumpet and Tenor sax are in Bb transposition and as you would read it on the concerning octaves for that instrument. You'll notice that when Michael Brecker takes over the solo of Randy, he uses the note Randy ended with in the same octave but it's notated an octave higher. Guitar and keyboard solo transcription are for C-instruments. This was the choice, so you can match it with the instrument that is being played made the most sense.

Joe Dart and Robert Fripp might be better examples there. The nearly four minute long crescendo in 13/4 on Starless was so titanic in its minimalism that some credit it as the first example of postrock (seriously the stamina of Fripp, Wetton, Bruford, and Cross on display on the albums Red and Starless and Bible Black is just superhuman,) and Dean Town has likely turned more Millennials and Zoomers onto playing the bass guitar than any other song. Using this gang of glorious and notorious noodlers as an example of the value of restraint seems like using a trip to Las Vegas as an example of the value of fiscal responsibility, and if I may be blasphemous the BB in BB King stands for Boring Bastard.

@@matt2915 Why would you assume it's AI?... people have been transcribing jazz solos for many decades now.
I don't mean no disrespect, but not everything extraordinarily technical involves AI. Also, contrary to popular belief, there are a lot of different mathematically correct ways to write music that are unreadable; I highly doubt an AI would make something even close to being as readable as this. If an AI was able to read music, then eventually it would be able to write it properly, but transcribing is yet a whole damn step above that in terms of technique. Humans are awesome!
Also, we made the AIs... as Steve Wozniak would have it, "The only thing that bothers me about AI is that it's not actually intelligent, it doesn't ask itself that to do in the morning."... but I guess this is philosophical... anyway, have a good one!

I only recently discovered that there is AI out there that will isolate an instrument from a mix, so I was curious if there was some kind of transcription bot out there somewhere.
