When literally nothing can stop you from smashing that solo

- This Bob Reynolds solo with Snarky Puppy is so damn hot! What a band, soloist and vibe here. It got so heated that towards the end, Bob's headphones fell off but the musical abilities of the whole band just treated that as another way to interact in this improvise setting. Musical cameraderie at its finest.

LOL... funny story: I was so embarrassed I begged the director and Mike League NOT to use this take.
Bob... We're so glad they didn't listen to you on this one!
For my ear, a hint of “the edge” makes it perfect.
why were you embarassed
and deprive us of that amazing solo?
Embarrassed and this is the absolute slapper you gave us?! God damn.
Love how the sax kindly introduced itself and asked the drums would you mind if I went nuts and the drums was like yeah as long as I can join you! 😂
And the confirmation was on 0:52
@@44choko man, that call-and-response was so perfectly executed, I giggle every time I listen to this piece. Amazing!!
I know we're all here for the sax solo but hot damn, that is some seriously amazing drumming!
Amen. That was my first time meeting and playing with Larnell. 🤯
This session must've been bonkers@@bobreynolds
Larnell Lewis is an alien from a planet with a heavily drum centric culture and nobody can convince me otherwise.
This looks like it, and it might be what I recall to be an insane story of how Larnell Lewis took a 13-or-something hour flight to this recording, listened to the base idea of the music he'd be playing with on the flight there, just to start the recording with little to no rehearsal beforehand. My favorite track from that recording being Lingus.
Yup I gave counting.
Larnell, man. When the headphones dropped and Bob stopped playing for a couple bars, Larnell immediately inserted a sick fill to keep the momentum going.
He already started that fill before the last saxophone note
@@henk6172while he did start a fill it was never his intentions to play a full six stroke roll
He has stated in an interview as soon as he noticed the headphones were going he continued it on to fill the gap.
@@jjlove2725 oh my god.... His reflexes make no sense.
Exactly! He saved my butt!!
@@jjlove2725 ah that makes sense, that's some talent if you're able to do that
WANTED: Desperately seeking kind trumpet player for headphone adjustment services, signed temporarily blinded tenor player currently mid solo
Watching the drummer and sax player “talk” to each other through this whole solo was a joy to behold.
Time, space, sound, frailty, silence, density, tension, resolution, beauty, destruction, hope, joy, fun, love!
🌈 words 🌈
Pretentiousness...
@@samhilton4173negative energy is what your comment was. Nothing wrong with expressing what you felt using words to describe expressive solo. Ask yourself this, what did your comment bring to the table? If what you heard in that solo was pretentiousness, you’re not listening.
And big bootys
I was so freaking anxious throughout the entire solo
"When's it gonna happen??"
"WOULD YOU KINDLY DROP YOUR HEADPHONES?!!"
The sax is incredible but what really blew my mind was the drums!!! Damn this whole thing was incredible
Right? I never even knew Kevin Bacon could play sax, but to play it this good, that was mine-blowing!
Larnell is a certified demigod on drums. Dude is next level.
Larnell Lewis is not human.
What's even more wild is this drummer was a last minute fill in! He had to learn the songs on his flight to this recording session! Larnell Lewis is a madman on drums!
@@The-KP 😂
Man, this is some amazing transcribing. I got to study with Bob Reynolds at his sax retreat in Tennessee and he gave me a much needed ass kicking. He taught me that there's always a different way to shed tunes, and that even putting on random spotify playlists and playing along with them will do wonders for your ear.
Used to watch the tv or spend the evening with my friends/ roommates always holding the guitar and trying to figure out and play along commercial tunes while they were on, or sat smoking joints listening to their playlists while I improvd along.
I was lucky to have roommates who like to hear me noodle and double the melodies of their songs, but I became a lot better and intuitive when it comes to improvising and immediately hopping into the correct key.
My brain leart which frets made which sounds and in no time I could play a melody just by 'pre-playing it in my head' before the melody actually kicks in in the song or commercial or whatever.
All that to say, hell yeah that is great method for sure. Also probably the most fun way to actually practice
You’ve got to be a beast to study with Bob Reynolds. Good on ya mate!
Inside Outside! It is a wonderful place to get your ass kicked! Lol, me too!
@@JoMajorSax Joe! It's Jamie from IOR 2019!
@@jamiemeansjamesmusic Hi Jamie, I want to go back to IOR quite a huge amount! Hope you are well.
My favorite part of this track is the communication between Bob & Larnell, especially at 0:51
Just like between Cory Henry and Larnell in Lingus, he is such a phenomenal drummer with great musical sensibilities.
thats a good part, my favorite part is at 1:55 where the violinist looks at Darnel and you know shes completely DTF after hearing him get nasty with the drums.haha
@@trainwreckfilms she's thinking something crazy
When Mike League told me about Larnell (we had yet to meet) he said, "You're gonna love this guy. He's super interactive." Boy was he right!
@@bobreynolds Oh hello!! I loved your solo on this track, you sound incredible!
I can not describe how clean the fill @ 2:02 by Larnell is. I love you can see the one girl in the background is totally locked in on him killing it too.
she starts at 1:50 shaking her head in disbelief and she's joined by the two other violionists shortly after, I wish I could see what they saw, he probably transcended there
That drumfill was so smooth you wouldn’t have guessed that was because of a falling set of headphones hahaha
As a drummer I have to say HOLY GOD that was amazing. Larnell Lewis, LARNELL LEWIS! Then that sax solo oh so good and just when I was thinking _man I wish there was some dirt_ the headphones flew off and dirt went flying! Wooow!
Lingus gets a lot of love (and for good reason) but for me this track is right up there.
Also, listening on Spotify is great but revisiting these live clips is something else. The violinist looking at Larnell is iconic 😂 us too, girl
Guys, you should absolutely subscribe to Bob Reynolds his CZcams channel if you haven't already. Bob is extremely transparent with his process as saxophonist and puts out great saxophone content, some of the best on CZcams. He is not only a top player, he is eloquent and clear in his delivery as well in these videos. Make sure you check it out!
Another solo like this one that I listened to so much when it came out, was his solo on Janek Gwizdala's "The Space In Between". I love that tune and the sound of that band... Back then I didn't forsee we could ever be this priveleged to have both Janek and Bob providing us with so many insights.
/Jorre
I am indeed subscribed. And even at his level, he still gets frustrated with his own progress and is so real.
Yeah indeed, but its the same with Michael Brecker for example, in the few masterclasses he did he seems very unhappy and frustratie with his progress.
I guess that's a natural thing to happen, whichever level you are at, and great players like Bob are so open about it. The natural state of being a musician
This is the kind of content that makes me realize I will never reach the heights of musical ability that those who were born to will.
That drummer is going off!
That’s Larnell Lewis. Check him out. ‘Change Your Mind’ from his album is absurd
Me nr 20 giving a 👍🏾
I could barely even pay attention to the main subject of the video because he's such a machine. Groove heaven
You know he took that violinist home after that.
Snarky Puppy is freaking awesome! Hope I can catch them live sometime in my life. What a groovy band!
Got to see them live with Steely Dan in AZ. Great show!
Kudos to whoever transcribed the song. Especially the headphone part 😂❤
0:52 is my favorite part with the call and response. Love seeing the sax and drums play together like that.
Bob Reynolds is not only a modern-day master, having overcome every aspect of the possible difficulties we all face learning our instruments, but he remains down to earth, humble, kind, and a healthy human being in mind and spirit. I have such great respect for him and can only wonder what it must be like to be such a person.
When things go wrong but you still finish the performance is the mark a true musician. I always think of that video where a string breaks in the middle of the solo on Little Sister and Stevie Ray Vaughan just keeps it goin and does a quick guitar swap and picks up like it was nothin.
This was dope. The drummer stole the show. That beat was insanely good
this whole solo is genius, but my favorite bit is Cory freaking out and howling with excitement at 1:52
Who else spotted the violinist at @1:55 geeking over how awesome Larnell is...
Ha, same comments on the video for this song, she was definitely digging some Larnell!
Its amazing how he uses the same motif repeatedly throughout the whole song but in different contexts, as if his use of repetition actually creates more variety
Repetition is what makes a song coherent. When you have a certain comfort or expectation in how the song is going to go, lets you get into the groove, then as you hear a motif come up and they riff on it/alter it/subvert expectations in some way, that's where the hair raising, spine tingling stuff comes from. Damn near every song does it in some way but two I'm thinking of where you can hear a very clear example in the chorus are goodnight and go by imogen heap, and part time lovers by stevie wonder. Oh and my way by frank sinatra, that one always gives goosebumps through that method
Motivic ideas are seen a lot in great solos
The smile at the end, pure joy
Saw them live last week and ran into them at a local jam session after the show! Super nice guys
what a great band as well!!
Bob Reynolds is such a beast.
It's amazing to see how happy the entire band is in this clip, you'd never know that the whole time leading up to the recording they were all stressed that it wasn't going to work out and that the album just wasn't going to be any good. It's been said a million times, but Larnell Lewis really did make this album.
drummer sees sax.
sax sees drummer.
he saw him from across the room.
their eyes met.
they stared into each other's souls and shared a moment that transcended time and space.
hahahah
The CZcams algorithm knows me better than I know myself at this point. That had no business going that hard. Incredible!
Probably my favorite sax solo, especially because of the moment and larnell's ear
I've listened to the album many many times but have never watched the video for this particular track. I remember the first time I heard that opening lick and I was like damn that is a devastatingly spicy way to start. But the headphones thing is an extra layer of satisfaction on top of that. I've seen them live twice, but it's on my bucket list to one day be in the room for one of these album recording sessions.
The drummer is killing it behind the soloist 😍
Lingus gets a lot of love (and for good reason) but for me this track is right up there.
Also, listening on Spotify is great but revisiting these live clips is something else. The violinist looking at Larnell is iconic 😂
Man seeing them live was absolutely amazing! Exceptionally talented musicians !
What a beautiful sax sound Bob has 😮!
I never even knew Kevin Bacon could play sax, but to play it this good, well that was mind-blowing!
😂 I also get Steve Kerr references
My favorite track from We Like It Here. Just such a beautiful piece with incredible emotional range. Great transcription 🙌
Notice all the girls staring at the drummer with that weird smile? They were jealous of how my man was banging those drums 😂
god do I ever miss listening to this song for the first time
Legendary solo
such a humble guy, down to earth person. used to watch his vlogs years ago.
Larnell killing it on the drums. Amazing solo, why wouldn't you want this take?
You wouldn't believe how many times I've listened to this song because of this solo. I'm so glad they used it! 👏🏾
The best jazz is 20% talent, 80% vibes.
Wow what a solo section!!! Amazing sax playing, and that kitchen was on fire, sick groove!!!
What an amazing combination,
Perfect expression and communication,
Music making great sense
Absolutely 🔥🔥🔥 solo on that tenor. This song starts off with a truly squelchy feel.
Wow, this is a hell of a performance overall, love the song!!!!!!!
This beautiful conversation between a sax and a drum hit me square in the face.
All the solos on that ablum are amazing
insanely incredible oh man wow
Everyone heard is an absolute titan!!!!
man, this session will always be top of mind for me.
The way he uses rests!!!
That is the ZONE right there and mans was in it
Both of you killed that section!
Epic. Thanks
It's crazy to me how that sounded so smooth considering the headphone incident! I had no idea that happened before having watched the video of it. That's great work right there!
I've been listening to this album for almost ten years and this is the first time I ever noticed anything interrupted him. The syncopated style completely hides it
Larnell Lewis is the best funk drummer in the world. Dude does not miss
This album is amazing! Start to finish.
Those Snarky Puppy guys are from another dimension. God level musicians
This solo is multidimensionally mind boggling
OH BABY THAT WAS NICE
I love the small 'ᵂᵒᵒ' at 0:26 in the background
Larnell's best sax solo ever.
this is an amazing group of musicians... and this sounds like Jazz from the future but now xD
Not sure how this popped into my algorithm but I’m really happy it did… this is sick. And that drummer?! Whooooo!!!!
Bob Reynolds is awesome and seems like a good dude as well.
🙏 depends on how much sleep I've had. LOL
@@bobreynolds LOL! Young kids impact that too, for sure. I loved your sign “Choose to suck less today”. - maybe not exact but I feel the same! Thanks for the inspiration.
Oh my god he’s so young
10 years ago this month!
I recognized the band in the first few notes, there is something really particular in their musical identity, i don't know what but i like that aha ! Remembering the live concert in Annemasse last year where i was in the public, very cool evening !
The drums are so good aswell
Holy jesus the groove in this video is overwhelming !!! O__________O
I'm literally just getting into jazz music and it is great finding all these incredible songs and artists and musicians wow 👏👏👏👏👏💪💪💪💪 salute oh man salute
this is the first time i subbed so fast to a channel
The build up is so euphoric
I just found my new favorite band.
What a band
Snarky Puppy is on a whole other level. haha
amazing!
That was amazing ❤❤❤
Yup, Bob Reynolds is the man!
There is nothing that could have kept me in my seat by the of that solo.
Wild!!!!
The sax solo is insane but I can't help but be distracted by Larnell Lewis. Dude is an alien.
Damn I feel this one when you actually doing one of the best take you can do and a facial from the headset will not stop you from powering through what so ever.
Jesus, that buildup gave me goosebumps!
That's some insane drumming
"find yourself a kind trumpet player" lmao 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
So damn good!
And the youtube algorithm blesses my ears once again 🙌🙌🙌
Obviously, I'm not jazzy enough to appreciate some of the earlier stuff in this piece, but everything else about this was incredible. The drumming, the bassline, the sax, the piano, everything!
Hot damn! How could you not be moving during this. Wow. 🖤
"Puts headphone before eyes" sent me 😂now that's an accurate transcription
The faces on the folks in the string section! 😂😮😅
Very nice transcription Jorre keep up the good work my dear friend. Love from Cy in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA 🇺🇸 🇧🇪
Hey Cy, thanks! See ya soon
