Russ Courtnall was a really good plater, a great skater and was a lot of fun to watch. But he also served as an example of the genius of Serge Savard. Savard recognized that he had a club that could win another cup after the surprise win of 1986. But he had to tweak that roster and bring in players that, together created a more dangerous team and that included trading Courtnall for Brian Bellows. Bellows was also a scorer but he was a bit more physical than Courtnall and put more pucks in the net and that was what the '89 team just didn't do enough of.
