I used to get offended by some of your comments when I first found you Rick. But now I don't. Once I figured out what you were about I realized in some ways I'm a bit like you. I hate stupid too. I stuck around cuz I like what you have to say about horses. And I'm glad I did. In some ways I'm working on not taking things too personal anymore. Takes too much effort to fuss about being offended over something that you don't need to own.

I have a story similar to the one in this video. I was about 12 years old and we were in Denmark on an island somewhere and there trail barns all over the place. So my brother, his friend, our cousin, a childhood friend of mine and myself decided we all wanted to go for a ride. This was a fairly large group of horses going out, and I remember, when signing up with which horses everyone was getting, my DAD was telling everyone how great a rider I am and they can give me a big horse that's not a beginner horse. I think it was about 10 horses in this group. My brother and friend were on norwegian fjords, I was on a big bay thoroughbred my cousin on a small black pony. When we headed out, I was fairly at the front as third in line. The woman in front of me was having trouble controlling her horse which made me a little nervous, but no big deal until the leader said "And now we'll gallop!" I was expecting a canter as i was not expecting a tour group to subject inexperienced riders to a full, flat out gallop. Boy was I surprised when all the horses bolted in unison, the second horse in line ended up in a field bucking, my thoroughbred sped past the leader and and ran full stop. I had to let it run itself out and get tired before anyone could catch up to me. That's when I lost my confidence. So when we left, i was on a big bay horse, and when i came back, I was on a little black pony. Thanks Dad!!!

I was married to my ex for more than 10 years. At first we didn't have much to do with each other. Now years later we are friends, His new wife doesn't like me much....lol. I enjoy the stories Rick and they are usually good for a laugh and there is nothing bad about that. Don't pay any attention to the trolls. They are like barn witches without a barn.
I have to say I acted like a know it all expert on a trail ride in New Zealand. I gave my horse a cue to canter( in truth, I'm sure I gave him too much leg or kicked him) and the big guy responded by bucking my ass off! Man I have never been launched so far skyward from a horse in my life. Served me right. Landed on my feet though.

I loved this story. Poor horsey, having so much problems. Your horses are spoiled rotten, which is the correct way to keep them. A relaxed horse is a sign of relaxed treatment.

YES, please do the Tanner story!!! I love the bouncing screaming!! Had me laughing so hard. And when I was a kid (9 or 10), I was that person on a runaway horse. My cousin rode his mini bike up behind the horse I was on.. and we were off.. All I could think of was those cartoons where the horse runs into the tiny opening in the barn doors, and the person's legs keep them from going in.. hang there for a second before falling. I didn't wanna be that person LOL. Not sure how I stayed on.. but I imagine I had that bouncing scream at that age.. lol too funny.

I just started watching your stories and when you laugh I can’t help but laugh myself.. I’m an okay rider but I’m an idiot sometimes 🤣.. do I blame the horse.. no.. I always apologize while getting on them and say yup you got stuck with the crazy human 😂.

Funny. I took my horse freedom to the beach the other day and I had no problems at all. My horse did great but it was some type of fund raiser so there was about 30 other horses at the beach so I went and video tapped it and an horse "expert" was having problems getting her horse through a narrow fenced area. It was like a bridge with a fence on both sides so she's the 3rd horse in front of me. My cousin was the 2nd horse and I was behind her and the 1st horse stopped and started backing up and spooking so my cousin yells "Matt turn around" because that horse was kicking and bucking right up to her horse and I turned freedom around fast in the tight area and let the horse expert run off past me. I was laughing so hard. I caught it all on camera and uploaded it to my channel. That girls horse spooked 2 times on my video HAHAHA. It was funny then the lady tells me "you need to get out of the way faster when you hear me screaming. I was like are you kidding me? Lol

Carol V it took about 20 minutes from where I live. I live right next to the beach. About 2 minutes away or walking distance but the beach they allow horses at is a little further away. About 20min

Hahaha same sort of thing happened to me once only the guy gave me the horse because he saw me ride once before. I had ridden a bit and said as much. So they gave me a little buckskin, cute little thing, probably around 13 hands. I went in the canter group as I had played around with the pony before the trail started and we got along well. My friend stayed in the trot group as she didn't like her horse's canter but she was miss expert. I was confused and only realised she stayed when we were half way down the beach. Anyway the riders in front of me took off, flat chap, fast canter. My pour pony has to gallop to keep up. I had never galloped before but I knew that they would eventually stop. I just had to hold on til then. I had the reins but the pony had been tugged on a lot before so ignored my attempt to slow down. The other riders did stop and so did he. I said to the bloke running the ride that I thought he over estimated my ability. "Nah you are still on" was his reply then off we went again. I enjoyed the second gallop more after learning how to ride it. I should mention here that I am very nearly blind so can't learn by watching other riders.

I am a 70 year old woman who can't ride anymore, some days can barely walk, but I just love reliving the "good old days" with your horses, and your horse stories. As for the haters, well, there's a saying that I won't say but it fits them. F them if they can't take a joke. LOL Keep up the good work. As for the haters, the wanna be cowboys or girls, they need to open their minds a little and think about the horses instead of themselves for a change. I've worked at a Dude Ranch for most of my teenage years. The amount of people who said they had experience riding but couldn't get the trail horses to leave the yard was insane... We used to place bets when they'd come in about whether they could get 100 feet out of the yard XD.

Hey Rick, just want to thank you for sharing your knowledge of horses. My two boys came from a stupid barn witch with a drinking problem who was nasty as hell. I have followed your expert advice from the rounded corners in the fence and never locking them up in a stall to installing a "NO BARN WITCHES ALLOWED " sign at the front door of the barn. This kinda reminded me of something I've been wondering for a while: How many ways *are* there to make a horse move, from stand to walk or such?
I learned to make them move via thrusting the hips forward so they feel the 'forward' movement, I did encounter the squeezing method too but just once. (Might be due to the different country tho as I am from Germany, but I am not sure.)

I worked at a barn years ago taking out trail rides. This story brought me back Lol... I was a kid at the time when I’d ride just about anything. My buddies and I would jump on bareback with just a halter and lead rope and go. I’ve heard all the stories and remember the ones that talked big! Hahaha! I knew every horses thing and sometimes put the big shots on the ones that would take them in the puddles and roll as soon as they figured out there was an idiot on their back or drag them under low branches when they were white knuckled on the reins! Lmao I was just a kid but I knew horses recognized injustice and ignorance. Not too many trail riding places anymore. Not a bad thing. Not the best life for some of them. Also a Liability I suppose. Anyway I had some good times and got a lot of satisfaction watching these horses figure these people out! Only takes one pull or an unnecessary kick and it was game on! Lol Anyway good video! Btw... on one of your videos you said horses don’t try and rub you on fences they instinctively follow fence lines. I agree they follow fence lines but they also will deliberately try and rub you on a fence or tree. I’ve seen it a million times... keep doing videos man , and thanks for not slurping your coffee on this one!
Been there. I was that crazy lady who held on, but I was and am a beginner and told them that. They took me up a steep hill straight onto gallops. The horse knew what it was doing. It had done that trail a thousand times before, so up and of he went. I just held on, somehow stayed calm, wrapped round his neck until he stopped. I truly thought if I let go I'd be trampled. Them they all appeared and said 'why didn't you let go?' So I told them they didn't tell me otherwise. I got back on and finished the ride, even moving to close to and battering my knee off a tree in the process. It hurt like hell for a week or so. To sum it up, I learned from my mistakes lol.. Now, watching Ricks videos, I'm learning even more. It's a slow process but a rewarding one
