Hi Rick i've been following your channel for a long time, you did a good job getting these babies home. You are a great horseman. I have to comment about the English Monarchys horses, i was offended at your take on the awful event that happened in London when they were out exercising and learning how to cope with traffic, crowds etc. all part of their education. I'm Australian and have bred and raced thoroughbreds, show, station horses. On that awful day in London a construction crew dropped slabs of concrete near the horses so if course many panicked, threw their riders. Every rider is experienced, seasoned military and chosen for their horsemanship. This event has devastating them. I've been to the Mews where the horses are stabled, believe me Rick, the Kings horses are pampered, loved and live their best lives. For half the year they are turned out to the most beautiful pastures you can imagine, by the coastline in Norfolk, watched over by veterinarians, hundreds of acres of lush green pastures. These horses are loved. Yes, they have duties such as Trooping the Colours and other Royal duties. The two you saw injured as they ran panicked through the streets have had surgery and are now recovering in Norfolk from their injuries. They may resume their duties or if the trauma has affected them they will be cared for on a Royal estate. Every horse has one handler who bonds with them and loves them. Please dont feel badly for the Royal horses, believe me Rick they are pampered and loved.

I appreciate you support but according to you these people are good and caring and yet Four of Five horses were put in a situation too fast that they could not handle, were able to break away from all these great owners and the horses had to pay with fear, pain and injury. Sorry but we have to agree to disagree.

      @jasminahaverinen5759 Před 2 měsíci +17

We have a very differend view of pampering. I pamper my horses by not putting painful bits in their mouth, not making them walk and stand of concrete with shoes on or making them stand in stalls hours and hours.
The streets of london (may I add in the MASSIVE expence of taxpayers of UK) is no place for horses when they do not serve a proper purpose.
They are just PR so the lonarchs can be all fancy amd mighty.
Police horse, army horse they all are just a show eventho the riders are actual police- and military professionals.
Anthromorphising horses by thinking expensive blankets and stables with fancy interior designs and shandeliers is just false.
Horses want to be horses and they do not enjoy city.

@@ThinkLikeAHorsethe fact is that there's no really 100% safe way to handle horses anywhere. Even an expert won't be able to account for unforeseen events like a huge slab of concrete being negligently dumped right next to a whole herd of mounted horses. They've been riding horses through London for thousands of years and overall their modern safety record is quite good and the horses are very well treated. Don't be so harsh because of one awful incident. There are plenty of real abusers out there. Let's go after them instead.

About 26 years ago I worked at a variety of sites. An was on my way to work. Took the back road to a site. Saw something moving on the side of the two lane I was on ( it was night time). Turn out to be a horse that escaped, it's new home and was heading back to his old home. Stopped by this farm that had three trucks by the side of the fence. They were looking for Sam. And they were waiting for him at his old home
Short story, made shorter . They got him home. And former Standardbred horses can jump.

Excellent tutorial Rick. Made me happy to realize how much I have learned from you over the years because that was exactly how I approach any horses that I don't have any prior experience with. I do the same slow approach, no direct eye contact, closing distance, relieving pressure when necessary, approach from the side, slowly work my rope over the head to form a neck rope, then transition to a halter. The tricky part is getting to the other side for the halter. I usually do chest scratches to be able to maneuver around the horse. All horses seem to enjoy the chest scratches so it is an excellent distraction to change their focus while I am repositioning. I know it doesn't always work this way because at each point there can be something that doesn't go as planned. But it was a good lesson in how to properly catch horses, which is something I practice in one of our 5 acre pastures at our rescue facility.

Rick, quick story. At the moment I ride horse at a local place here in the Netherlands. Since they only ride with a bit, I was able to convince them to ride some horses without a bit. I have learned alot from you and like minded people. At the place where I ride, they all think I have some hidden talent how I communicate with horses. So they asked me if I can ride this horse that is very skittish and nobody really rides him and stands alot in the tables (wich I am totally against). It is an Andalusian gelding that has a past wich is not too positive. So I said yes. But the catch was, it needed to be with a bit. Against my feelings about the bit I said yes, since a lack of movement is also horrible.
Got up, got to ride a little, horse spooked, I fell off, horse freaked out cause of the stirrups banging against him. Managed to calm him a little. Got rid of the saddle and bridle, took a big breath and just walked. The horse followed. Managed to run with him quiet a while. I was able to project some skills I learned from you and some others. Now, they asked me to work with horses at liberty since it went well with the Andalusian. Idk why I am telling this. I will never say yes to riding with a bit again. But at the same time, managed to show them some ground work wich is understandable for the horse.
Not experienced with horses at all, but following your perspective on horsemanship gives me a major head start. Really making some changes at the place where I ride, thanks to you!

I have had neighbors horses and mules and yes some cattle come up my driveway, thankfully I have the driveway gates locked at all times so they could not get to the barn as I have horses also.. My daughter led the lead ones on foot and I followed in the truck at a distance to keep vehicles behind.. We live in the mountains, not a lot of traffic however people fly up and down this road.. Great catch..

Good ending, and You were having a good time. I kept thinking I was going to hear "FED-X left the Gate OPEN" like scratching a black board.....

Does it help to have signs on the gates, and a post at the gate warning that there are horses etc and to ALWAYS shut the gate?

@@johnm840 You’re right, I hadn’t seen that one, but I went looking for it, found it, watched it, and laughed so much at Rick’s intensely funny imitation of that woman’s complaint, lol, and I too would have been wanting her to calm down and just focus on the issue at hand. That was ten years ago by the way!
Thank you so much for mentioning that video!

Hi, Rick. First time on your channel. Lester Morrow said to check out your channel. Good job with corralling the horses! That was fun! Love that you teach us as you go.
