I was trying to answer questions and discuss how when people look for one answer or an easy fast answer, they fail. I cannot help or fix your horse over an email. I can point out what your horse is thinking, what your horse is learning and why you are teaching bad lessons, however your problems need to be fixed by you.
Before you show your ignorance and tell me my horses are tied too long or too close or I am going to get kicked or what I am doing is dangerous, shut up and move on I don't want to hear and no wants to know how stupid you are, so just don't watch it and stay off the channel, this channel is for learning not for YOU to give advice preach your ignorance.
I actually like the attitude of these two questions, but they are both misguided thinking I can somehow tell them something special to them that for some reason I have hidden secret information that I will suddenly share and it will fix their problem. Training is a process not an event or an answer. It is time, effort, experience, timing, feel, understanding and many other things. The more you put in the more you get out, no shortcuts no easy fast fixes and those that chase that just end up frustrated and will never develop their horsemanship.
I may seem hard on these two, but it was in fun and was trying to give a different perspective on how someone that understands horses will see a problem and how someone that does not understand or is confused sees the same problem differently.
When I talk about my channel stats I forgot to say that 71% of my viewers are women. I thought that would be higher, but still a majority.
Hope this helps. Hope the Husband does not get his butt hit with a rope. :)

I'm 17, I admit I know very little about horses and I am knew watcher to your videos, but you have helped me so much with my horse. He was herd bound, afraid of trailers, water, his own shadow, wind, would almost fall over when you picked up his feet, you name it. We both have come along way, he will now meet me in the pasture, load in a trailer, get a bath, picks up his feet like a dream, and well.. not jump at his shadow or the wind, and more. Just wanted to say, thank you for putting out these videos.

I am a bedbound 69 year old woman. The greatest compliment I got as a child was when I got thrown from a horse and was told that I knew how to fall.(totally intuitively). I never realized my childhood dream of owning a horse but I still feel that I can vicariously own, ride, be around, etc, horses by watching your u-tube videos. If I could own horse at thiis point in my life, I would like to learn your way of training/being around horses. They are noble magnificent creatures and deserve our respect! Anne Hurst

I am 16 and I've helped as my grandad lunged horses and he said the same things you said in this video. He told me, and I'll never forget, "Son, if I came up and started kissing your nose every time you turned of the bathroom lights when you were don, how many times would it take before you stopped turning off the lights to make me stop kissing your nose?" That has stuck with me since then and I incorporate that into any praise I give any animal! Keep up your awesome videos! I am about to watch every single one!

My parents, when they were younger, were avid riders. They taught us about horses the way you do. I understand your thoughts. My grandfather was a saddle maker in Alberta for many, many years. We owned horses and a boyfriend told me he needed a twister just to saddle his horse. We bought his horse and had never had to use a twister - I dropped the guy after we got the horse. It only took a month to get her relaxed and happy. He became my 13 yr old sister’s horse and ended up winning at local shows. You are so wise and I love all your videos. You got the method.

I got my horse when she was a yearling. I rode her as a two year old. Just walking around. I had to stable her, as I had no property. When she was five, I had her at a great stable. I was there EVERY day to brush and care for her and always to ride her for at least two hours. If I didn't show up, they called my home to find out why.
I buried that horse when she was 35, yes,35 years old. Broke my heart.
    My point?
I got her to know her and love her and enjoy her. I like to think she had a pretty good time too. See you in heaven Orion, pronounced Or-ee-on. She taught me everything horsey. If she was human, she'd be a saint.

wow another great point Rick. I hate when a horse does something someone wants and then they immediately praise it and hug it and get in its space. You are so right about learning to turn your body language off. I even look the other way and turn my body to show my horse "see i'll leave you be totally when you do right" I feel to many people FORGET a horse is a prey animal like a deer and to many want to treat a horse like a dog "predator animal" Dogs do better with praise and hugging and petting. Horses DON'T.

Along time ago there was a white horse that lived across the street. The horse was always by himself in their back yard. When I would go for a walk one time I saw him peak his head around the far side of the barn then he galloped over to Me. He would grab my hair a little and I really loved that horse.

Wow, I love this! I just got my first horse in September, and the first thing I found out is that I know squat about training horses, but my mare Luna figured out right away how to train me. So now I see that every time I'm with her, I'm training her-- by my attitude, my actions, my reactions towards her. Luna knows I'm slowly figuring it out, and she's patient enough to humor me at my attempts (LOL). I can't wait to watch more videos to see what else I'm doing wrong! Thanks!

Just saying, i'm 18, all my family has been around horses, except me. I know almost NOTHING, other than how to physically ride, I am literally going through and watching every single video and going through all the webpage, I don't even want to be around a horse until I know the RIGHT way to do things "not saying I won't make mistakes" but these pointers and general rules are a good way to get started. Thanks for making these videos, they are going to help me do things the HORSE way and not the TRAINER way.

I grew up in a "horse family" and had my first pony at age 6.
That doesn't make me an expert. Since then I've dealt with horses off and on. Decades later I'm hoping to get horses again. So before I go mess a horse up, I'm doing all the research I can. I'm a newbie to your videos but everything you say makes ultimate sense,
As a woman, well, heck, yeah you're a bit chauvinist, but I get why.
Will continue to check out your videos and really appreciate (and am amused with) them.

I disagree that all 'loving and scratching' is pressure. My old horse simply adored a couple spots being scratched, and she would drape her head over my shoulder so I could better reach 'that spot' at the base of her chest. She'd accept that as a reward for training just as readily as she accepted a release of pressure. I'd reword it as "loving and scratching without understanding what your horse really enjoys" is pressure.

This is giving me flashbacks. I was retraining a large draft cross that had learned how to get his way with people for someone. He planted himself when I was leading him from the pasture, and I swung the end of the soft cotton lead behind me at his butt to get him going. He quickly put it in drive. A bystander who was there looking at sale horses (because hers was too dangerous) ran at me screaming. She thought I had seriously injured him, because he had jumped forward, and screamed at her husband to call 911. She threw herself across this horse's shoulders to protect him from my "vicious beating". The 911 dispatcher had to calm her down, "A horse is a really big animal...." I later saw her trying to lead the same horse by doing jumping jacks around him, and then getting down on her knees in front of him and pleading. He bowled her over to get to a better patch of grass.

I am 17 years old and I watch your videos all the time! I know I haven't watched all of your videos, but I have loved every one I've seen! I don't only watch your videos because you are funny, (#conelivesmatter) but also because I want to become an equestrian in the future. I want to learn as much as i can about the behavior of horses, how to care for them, how to find problems, etc. Most of the teens my age that go crazy on your videos do not REALLY want to commit to the horse world. They especially mistake their "pony phase" for true horsmanship. Thank you for making your videos Rick!

Rick, I stumbled on English jumping on CZcams and stood up (literally) and cheered when a winner (bitless!) in the one of height categories withdrew rather than try his horse at the higher inch increment. Thank you for making me aware of bits, I've never ridden with one and used to have a blind spot; but now I notice them (and it saddens me)

    • @livewire2759
      @livewire2759 Před 3 lety +1

He's mentioned it a few times in different videos. Buddy was bred as a show horse, but when he was young he got kicked in the mouth and chipped a tooth, so since the owner couldn't use him as a show horse with a broken tooth, she gave him to Rick who had been working with Buddy already. If I remember right, Buddy was 4 or 5 when Rick got him... and again, I'm quoting Rick's videos from memory, I certainly don't know him personally, I've just been subbed to his channels for several years now.

I have learned so much from each video I have watched and apply what I have learned when I ride. Love your sense of humor and the fact that you are straight foward and to the point. Look foward to watching many more of your videos. wish I could have my own horse some day but for now I am enjoying riding again.

What I like about Rick is he's in reality land. A horse can be like a child sometimes and when parents are not willing to give a spanking that kid becomes a brat know it all punk. You have to be willing to spank and be aggressive when necessary. Sure I don't want to hit my horse BUT if he does something that one day can turn into a dangerous habit? Sure I'll teach him with a rope across the but or chest. Rick is so right about people excepting small "good" changes in there horse and not looking at the big picture. You CAN'T train horses in "ok this was better then last time so I'll give him a break" You have to be firm and go in with what you wanted to teach in the 1st place which is "don't move when I get on" if taking 5 steps is better then running a full field and you except that then it will eventually go back to running a full field. You have to say "the goal is to stop him from moving when I get on period" so even if its 1 step you have to correct that EVEN though 1 step is better then a full field. Good stuff Rick.

+Lesley Harwood women are persuaded from childhood not to be the least bit aggressive in life. When it comes to kids, animals and some men that is a hazardous lesson. Kudos to you. Horses are not designer pets that weight 10 lbs or less. They can and do hurt people, dumb people mostly.

Rick, I'm a 17 year old and I have been riding since I was born. I have always had a bit of a hard time taking advice from my mom, an experienced rider, on riding because I'm so stubborn. My horse has a stubborn streak in him too. He is also the biggest goofball ever. Despite my agree and the fact that I am so stubborn, I love your advice and will be using it.
I wanted to tell you how I got my horse also. Sir Banjo Bob, as he now goes by, was my second horse. The first horse I had was a rotten little pony. She rolled on me while riding, bucked on me, ran off, and did what Ebert she could to get me off. When I turned 8, I decided I had had enough. My parents took me to an auction at the Stalk show to see about getting a horse. I was bound and determined that I would by the biggest horse in the place and did. He is an almost 17 hand quarter horse. He was 2 at the time and every one thought my mom was crazy but he and i are great pals. I ride Western all the time and English once a year at fair. I do a showmanship pattern among everything at fair and I am planning on teaching I my horse to bow so that after my senior showmanship pattern, we can bow for our last show!
Thanks for the advice Rick. It will be well used!
