Here I explain what a bucking strap or nightlatch is and how it helps you stay in the saddle when the ride gets rough. Here is a link to my site where I have pictures and talk about the bucking strap: www.thinklikeah... -
Then I use my "PINK" hoof pick and talk about saddling a horse and then I get on Mr. T and show you what resistance looks like, what a fresh horse acts like when they are telling you that they are not ready to be ridden. Tanner shows clear behavior that he is not happy about me riding him and does several test to see if I am really in charge, he test to see if he really has to listen to me, he test to see if I am paying attention and he test to see what he can get away with, if I miss any of those tests, then he will become worse and will trust me less and listen less. So it is critical that you are able to recognize these signals and then respond appropriately to these test.
Here is another video on a rope night latch:

I love giving your older videos another visit, Rick. You've helped me so much in these years and have sculpted me before I even received my first horse. I'm passing the knowledge onto my husband (kids too, when they get older), who is horse clueless. I see this fresh behavior between the two of them each time, and even with me too. You're guiding 2 fine horsemen without being here, and putting 3 fine horsewomen in the world, too. I really look forward to bestowing your lessons to those around me.

With our stock saddles in Australia, we call this/these the monkey straps. They come in handy that's for sure. The old guy I trained under, back in the 1960's, didn't want any of us (we started many youngster Brumbies) to come off and teach the newbie that bucking was the way to go. Mostly they didn't buck though, he was big on taking our time, and like you say, reading the signs.

Thanks again for all your videos. I'm slowly making my through through all of them. This one was especially useful as my horse has done the 'honking' noise at times when getting ready to ride and would also be 'restless' or not wanting to stand still for mounting. While I never forced the issue by mounting until he calmed himself, I'm now glad to know what may have been going on.

I don't know about bucking straps but I know it's valuable to watch quiet and patient correction of the horse's natural impulse to just take off and take control when it hasn't been ridden in a little while. It's impossible to over-emphasize the best basics!

    • @BlueRidgeMtns100

Ah! I looked it up. I've ridden Western maybe three times in my life. I ride an English saddle (I wouldn't call what I do "riding" much less English riding) and I always used the mane to keep from hauling on the reins to keep my balance. I was thrilled to find there was such a thing as a neck strap and always tried to have one - mostly because I'm such a poor rider and I'm always afraid of using the reins to keep my balance, etc. Got it. No, no, I'm not implying that you or anyone else is not a good rider. I'm just saying that I now understand what a bucking strap is.

I always bought a training saddle with a good rawhide cheyenne roll and would hold it when horses would set to bucking. More leverage to hold your butt in saddle and keeps you from potentially getting launched over pommel or horses head (if a horse is a high kicking bucker).
This was always only IF the horse "exploded" with no fore-warning. Best buck cure is to see the horses warnings, and divert thier attention to get them to relax.

I have no place to attach a strap on the bare naked back of my horse. I took him straight out of the pasture after over 6 months without riding him in order to get into town when the roads were impassable by car last winter. He's a breeding stallion who is not started under saddle although I've climbed on a few times. He took me 15 miles into town and back without a problem without working him first. What a good little horse.

I don't think I heard a word you said. My eye was on Tanner and what a georgous, spit fire horse he was in his younger years. Towards the end of the lockdowns I ran across your videos. I saw him as adorable!! Today I saw him as a youngster. Oh Buddy there! My curiosity has me wondering what made you pick him? I know he was free, like Buddy but what little I know about you, I do know you wouldn't pick a horse because he was beautiful or free. What was it that made you pick him? And Buddy too. Maybe feeding the horses one morning you can share that with us. Also, I must say your horsemanship on the horse is great fun to watch!

  • @AnneAndersonFoxiepaws
    @AnneAndersonFoxiepaws Před 4 lety +1

You and the Norwegian girl (When the horse chooses? I think her channel is) are the only two people online that I have any time for. The difference being that both of you take the horses views into consideration and neither of you advocate punishing horses, in fact you do the exact opposite by rewarding good behaviour and ignoring bad behaviour this giving the horse time to think about it and choose to follow you of it's own accord. This is the secret of horsemanship, realising that the horse is a herd animal and that it needs to view someone as the leader and by acting in the correct way becoming the leader that the horse trusts and follows. It isn't rocket science and is very much a case of treating them in a way you would be happy to be treated if the roles were reversed.

Boy, Tanner looks SO much like my mustang -- and their personalities are so alike they could be brothers! How old was he when he was taken from the wild? Mine was 4 (I've had him for almost two years, now, he's 16), and even though he's bull headed, stubborn, willful -- he has a BRAIN and communicates. I'm pleased to see that you think it's OK for him to "be a horse" -- that "mind" saved my butt in the back country more than once. I've heard a horse and rider described as a "herd of two"

    RE: baggerhog
Other horse's tie rope is too long. Very easy for him to raise his head and catch the loop of the rope under the trailer fender, then panics and pulls back. Then, because of the narrowness of his rope halter, it can cause facial/neck nerve damage. Better to tie at the correct length and hang a hay bag, if you horse must eat while tied to your trailer.

My mare whom I've been off of for quite awhile is slow to adjust so I'm still doing ground work consisting of walking her around the new farm away from her companion horse and have her listen to me. She has to back up if she tries to move me over. First I put her in the round pen and she was crazy wild and tried to run over me, so I backed up in what we are doing. She is now calm and not pushing me. I'm going out of town so I can't work her for a week or so, but I'm hoping she'll pick up close to where we were.

But my first mare I could just stop riding her for 6 months and she would be exactly the same when I got back. He is blind in one eye, but that does not seem to bother him, he is not shy on that side. He has never been ridden but does walk a little on a lead. I have never owned a horse and know nothing about there body language ! I have trained and raised many other animals , just not a horse, The worst thing I could do is try and act like I know what I am doing, So I am asking for help, what should I do first? Is there any video's you would recommend for me to start with? I can't even tell the difference of if he's happy ,dominant , irritated ,, I need help! Thank you

Oh, was I supposed to ride with a saddle? I have yet to find one to fit him properly. That's okay. We are both perfectly happy without one. I never work him before riding no matter how long it's been. It only gets him more wound up than he already is. All he wants to do is get out there and go. The sooner I get on and head out the better he will be. Reins? Just possibly a halter and lead rope if anything at all. I trained him. He knows what to do.

I won't use a saddle without a bucking strap. Strap has saved my ass more than once.

I always mount using mane and rein-never use saddle horn-easier on horse as saddle remains more stable-and I never fail to put a horse on a line regardless where I am located-that is where I figure out my horse and get focus on me -3 minutes of your life-saves a lot of messing around when you mount usually-not always-after finishing over a 100 horses I have found this is safest for you and horse-so if you do not get the horses respect and focus on you quickly on the ground-why mount?-I do not mount a horse until we are both ready so I know what to expect-that is horsemanship not GUESSMANSHIP-

So you don't use a bucking strap the way it was intended to be used? just wondering. I've always been told to use a bucking strap but I trust Rick so if he says they are useless then I won't use them.

night latch, something to hang on too when the ride gets rough or you are tried or sleepy.
