How To Correct A Horse Who Acts Disrespectful, Is Food Protective & Ear Pinning - Pressure & Release

  • I show how to correct a horse that is being food protective, ear pinning and being a disrespectful. I don't use a whip, chain, lead rope buckle, bricks or bats, I simple talk to the horse like a higher horse would or like a lead horse would. I move the horses feet, I make the horse change direction, I make the horse uncomfortable and make being disrespectful hard and I make being nice easy. All I do is use pressure and release with timing and feel to talk to the horse in a language the horse understands. You see a horse go from showing her butt, kicking out at me and throwing her head at me to a horse following me, dropping it's head, approaching me respectfully and the negative behavior disappears in about 5 minutes.

It’s not being cruel and if you watch horses in a herd a boss horse will move everyone else’s feet. Be the leader your horse needs you to be and they will love you for it.

      @lumini3172 Před 4 lety +1

Adele Scott While that’s true, there are some people who take the whole “respect” thing too far, trying to get their horse to be submissive and respectful in every single aspect, not giving them any breaks. Like people forcing their horses to put their heads down below their belts just so they can put the halter on, and thinking it’s absolutely unacceptable when their horse shakes it’s head once, and just nagging them to do everything so so. You can be a good leader to your horse and get respect without micromanaging your horse’s every move.

Yeah, one of the reasons I get so annoyed when these "horse trainers" never do a single thing with their horse without a whip or some sort of metal or extra straps and use it to punish and intimidate them. Then, when the horse shows results out of fear of being hit with the whip, clanked on the chin/jaw with a lead rope clasp, jerked on the nose with a halter/in the mouth with a bit, etc. it's labelled as respect. Cough-Clinton Anderson-cough cough.

Thanks for teaching us the language of a horse. If we don't understand what the horse says how can we have a conversation. She said in her body language: "Hey you! Move away that is my food!" Then you simply said: "Hey ... I don't like that so move." "please leave me alone ... what do I have to do that you leave me alone pls." "Ears on me ... I like that." *release pressure* "Ohhh that is how to do that ... Now i know."

Oh man, with this video you saved two horses. I am a volunteer in an animal sanctuary, mainly donkeys but we have two horses, and we don't know how to handle them.
We created this myth around Finn, the black scary horse, and if he turns his back at you, ya better run for your life! We reinforced the bad behavior for so long.
But we really need to check his hoofs, so today I tried to follow your suggestion.. and ...wow. After 20 seconds, this wild beast, turned into a little lamb.. the situation of fear and blindly trying to put an halter on him, turned into a very clear comunication. And he was so relaxed, never seen him like this.
I makes me so sad because every other interaction I had with him, was a stress. For both of us, And I became one of those persons who calls his horse with bad names. And damn man.. it is so easy, I have literally no experiences with horses, and I did it.
Thank you a lot my friend!

I used to ride a pony who would be very dominant towards me as I was gonna grab her in pasture to take her out on a ride. She would pin her ears, charge me and try to bite and kick me. I was absolutely terrified of her and she knew it and used it on me. I used Rick's technique and it took me a couple of weeks to finally get it right, but when i did she never charged me again! She would still pin her ears lol mares.. but she never tried to bite or charge me after that. I had so much success with this and I'm so grateful Rick put up this video!

I’m amazed at how many angry and negative people there are in the comments. He never even raised his voice at her. What are you saying is crazy and wrong about him? He did the most basic “reward good, punish bad” training, while being the most gentle and kind as possible - to the point that the word “punish” is way too strong of a word to fit his actions!
You HAVE to train big animals if you are to live in harmony with them. Horses aren’t generally a concern seeing as they’re prey animals, but they’re still big and powerful. You have to set up rules for your relationship and then you both will have trust as you rely on that rule system. And a bonus of this specific training (“always be nice to me, as I will be nice to you”), if they pin their ears at something, then you can know something important. Maybe theres a danger nearby you aren’t picking up, maybe the horse has a fear you’ll have to comfort or work around. The rule system then becomes the basis for communication.
Bottom line, he gave her rules. She understood what they are. Now she is comfortable because she has safe consistency to rely on - the rules. And she knows she can trust him in general, as a bonus, because he never was mean as he taught the rules. She learned to be nice + he’s isn’t mean. Beautiful and important lesson.

I chased my new Arabian mare away just a few minutes one day and she followed me around the pasture like a puppy dog after that. Only 3 days later, she showed me her neat trick of unlatching a stall and ran out of the barn and through an open field gate into 400 acres of freshly tilled field. She took off like she was on a race track and was long gone a few minutes later when I realized her stall was empty. I'd NEVER tried to catch a freed horse before in my life and had no idea what to expect. I ran into the field calling her name and (according to a local farmer), she stopped dead in her tracks and ran straight back to me, then followed me home. IT WORKS and they do NOT hate you for it.

This is great. I leased a horse that would pin his ears at EVERYONE when they walked by. So I started working with him that if he pinned his ears I would chase him away. He was in a stall so it wasn’t easy, but I would just make him move while I was on the outside. Then I’d stand near by and wait, and I’d re-approach when he came up. If he had his ears forward or more polite, then I’d pet him and walk away and leave him be before I got him out to do anything. If he pinned his ears we started over. After a few consistent times of this he started being excited to see me. He would pin his ears at everyone else (cause they weren’t willing to put in the time and chopped it up to him being grumpy) except me. I could go in and pet him, and love on him and he would totally accept me in his space. Ohhhh he tested it every now and then, but overall it was a drastic change and one lady even commented that she “had never seen that horses ears forward! That’s amazing!”

I agree with this! The horse I used to ride was "Dangerous, and unpredictable, and bratty." That is what the old owners told me, and didn't want him because of that. I did this exercise with him but in the arena about a few months ago and he was an angel, he would follow me where ever I would go and never pinned his ears once. The reason he was pinning his ears and not letting people touch him is because he was in a pasture for 3 years and never got exercised. His old owners that said he was "bratty" and Abused him, they never fed him, he was 300 pounds under weight, and he learned that he was the ruler when they would give up ground to him. Great video Rick! This channel will show all the abusers what real horseman ship is, also the idiots that baby there horses.

I know this is an old video but I can't express how helpful this video was. I am a new horse owner and mine doesn't quite respect me yet. Learning that moving his feet until he looks at me, or is submissive helps me understand him and horses in general so much more. I love your videos! I love that you're not inhumane, and that you don't do things by hurting the horse. Thank you so much for being a good horseman and teaching all of newbies how to be one too!

I forgot to mention that I fell in love with you a couple of nights ago when you kissed your beautiful horse on the face, twice. It made me cry. And, you gave it pieces of carrot, which was so loving and kind, but just like kids, dogs and people, we do have to correct 'ear pinning' and bad behavior! People just don't accept responsibility or provide loving, yet, firm direction, when necessary and it's just unacceptable.

I really respect that you can SEE the difference in her posture, her neck, her head really CHANGE throughout the course of just this tiny seven minute clip. For some reason, people have a hard time understanding their brain isn't in a horses head, and even though they may come to know what you're thinking, you have to teach it to them first, in THEIR language. Respect to you, good Sir, for showing us such a good example.
