Here I have a volunteer try to catch a hard to catch horse that is hurt and in pain and does not want to be caught. I discuss pressure & release, using the driveline, stopping a horse's feet, controlling a horse's direction, making the wrong thing difficult and the right thing easy.
At the beginning of this Hollie said I already know I can't catch him he won't let me within 10 feet of him in the pasture.
Remember: If you think you can or think you can't - You are probably right.
This horse is a Mustang that is not people friendly and tends to avoid people. So normally he does not like to be caught, but he test everyone that tries and makes sure the person knows what they are doing and after he is convinced of that, he allows you to catch him. But now that he is hurt, has a bad abscess and is being doctored and caused pain every day, he does not like to be caught even more. And this behavior is very normal and predictable. Every time I catch him I doctor him and it causes discomfort, so he is NOT being mean or disrespectful, he is being a horse and that is all he knows how to be.

For some reason, this response really hit my funny-bone this morning (it's around 4:30am here)! Anyway, this was an extremely educational and helpful video. I don't have trouble catching my own horse, but at the ranch where I board (and previously worked at) I sometimes still help out with the other horses. Not all of them are as easy as my horse is to catch. Turns out I was already using these principles (to a lesser degree), which I guess is why I had FAR less trouble catching the really "hard-to-catch" horses that other people couldn't get. With this video, I now see WHY I was able to catch them more easily than some of the other staff, and also, I can fine-tune what I'd already been doing to make it even easier and more effective. You're right when you say that "with horses, the slow way IS the fast way." Thanks again, Rick!

Thank you so much for your videos. My husband and I acquired a older mare and to mini mules through a horse rescue here in Tennessee. Our mare was neglected and is not halter trained nor was I even able to handle her. I love your videos! I hope to be able to halter her after watching you work with others. Wow! Total enlightenment. Many years ago when I was meeting a horse for the first time and I climbed up on a fence and horse was on the other side,I just reached out to pat his face and the horse bit me right on my bicep area of arm. I had a red shirt on and always thought horse thought my arm was an 🍎. His bite was hard and bruised me. I think now maybe because I climbed up on fence and reached in and I was looking him in the eye.

Not all us horse forum gals are against you Rick. I for one am enjoying your videos and irreverant humor. You have a good grasp on horse communications and a humorous way to teach it to others. This is just how I catch my horses when they are being difficult and of course I am in a time crunch and they sense it. Lol. Wish I had the room to have my current horse on site.

Also I like this video, I found it helpful to watch the whole dynamic going on from a distance between Mr T, other horses, and humans, and see you talk through someone else catching your horse! Now I can see it all going on and guess for myself what the horse is going to do based on who/what's around. That's sometimes been harder when you've filmed what you're doing while you're doing it. Also shows better that it's communication and not some weird magic mojo between you and your horses. ;)
I have a friend who had trouble catching her horse, though I didn't have too much trouble. But anyway I tried this approach and it was even better, and I showed my friend, and then her horse followed HER instead of the other way around. What a difference!
I actually went to this horse rescue barn recently and there was this one horse no could get anywhere near. Let's just say, I was glad I watched this video. Thanks Rick!

First off I just want to say you are a genius. Enough said. This video is unbelievably helpful and I am incredibly grateful for it. But, being the inexperienced, stupid human that I am, I am still doing something wrong. My horse, every time I try to cut her driveline off(by walking-no running) she speeds up. By speed up I mean take off. Is there something that I need to make sure that I'm doing in order to cut her drive-line off? When she takes off what should I do? I would really appreciate a response! Thank you for everything you do!

Hey Rick, thanks for teaching me what i was doing wrong with my horse. Have been watching videos for a little while and was attempting to catch my horse today. Well taught.
I used to try catching my boy by pushing him off until he gave up... except stupid human didn't realise that he could run away from me forever. I knew there had to be a better way that running both of us into a sweat, but I didn't know it. Now, since I started using this technique, and using patience, I can't say he's 100% perfect to catch, but lately he's started coming up to me instead of running away. It's such a low key method but it communicates clearly to him what I want. Thanks for this!

I know this is an older video but I got to this channel because I was was watching your cop channel. I'm not stalking but
I am binge watching. I had a boyfriend tell me once (I can hardly type the words without laughing but maybe he was really a horse disguised as a Navy F-18 flight instructor), he said 'You need to anticipate my next move and act accordingly'. But really, it fits in this and many situations you find yourself in with horses. This was a great video and there were lessons learned by both, right up until Mr. T was caught.

Perfect video!! I love to watch other people (poor Holly LOL) work with your horses because it shows me what I am doing incorrectly with my horse. I just bought a gelding that I have difficulty communicating with. He is very flighty and flinches almost every time I move and if I have a rope or rope like item he is gone!! Unsure of his past experiences but I believe in moving forward and so this video was super helpful. Good job Holly....you are helping us newbies!!

Great video! Really helped! I have a hard to catch horse and I could never catch her unless she became tired of running from me. Your other video on this subject helped me so much! I can walk right out in the pasture and sometimes she will walk right up to me now :) Some days we have our off days and it takes longer. This has helped me alot, for those off days, thanks for uploading :)

What about trying to catch a horse with an injured back leg that doesn’t walk away, only turns her butt towards me each time I approach, and attempts to kick out if i get close?
Nice video. Shows how some horses really need you to be awake when you´re trying to catch them. I enjoy this kind of hooking up more than what I see sometimes around the barns here, where people bribe their horses into coming to them with treats. Nice to do sometimes, but not all the time.
Also, ouch. I hope Mr. T manages to rid himself of that nasty thing on his neck quickly, it looks seriously uncomfortable on the other videos.

with my friends horse ,henry, I sit in the field with him and feed him some treats, I then sit with him for a while the when all the treats are gone I leave the field and come back in half an hour and do the same thing, this is a 12 year olds method for building trust and eventualy I will be able to gain enough trust that he will let me catch him

While watching this I was thinking: "Oh, for god's sake, get a grip girl!" as many things did irritate me (small steps, slow reactions etc). But actually this is how beginners and the most part of people who do not know horse language very well do things, so it's actually very realistic.

thanks for this video. I could not work my horse because of an injury, so now she is like: the hell do you want?. So she always tries to run away. The strange thing is that when I catch her and get her in the roundpen she's following me like a dog. So the total opposite when I'm trying to catch her...
It's not abuse. If you can't catch a horse who is sick or injured, he can't get treatment, and that could be very bad news. Learn your facts before you comment rude things.

Reading this was freaking hilarious!
I've been trying this with my daughter's mare. Whenever I put pressure on, she just speeds up. Even the slightest pressure. She won't let me in front of her drive line. If I try to make her move her feet, she circles round and threatens to kick me. If I take off the pressure, she will hang out next to me for ages, but the slightest hint that I'm going to get a rope on her, off she goes. I sometimes take an apple to share with her and we just chill out together. Think I need to spend more time with her, but I do wish I could just go out and catch her straight away like my daughter does
Of course I don't take the pressure off when she threatens me, I tell her off, clap my hands and pretend not to be scared :-)

Because obviously the horse was being beaten in to submission to be caught and she had him galloping round her for 3 hrs before he gave in -_- would love to see their version on catching difficult horses! Think this is the best video I've seen on catching difficult horses! Really good explanations about Mr T's "thought process" too! :)

Can anyone please clarify for me what Rick means when he says 'get in front of the drive line?' Maybe I'm doing the wrong searches or something ridiculous but when I try, all I get is pages on how to 'long line' or 'long rein' your horse ... as part of teaching them how to drive.
I know it's been a year so I don't know if you figured it out yet or if you've forgotten about it but from this video I'm assuming drive line would be where his shoulder is and is basically like your arm, where he feels the most power since his legs connect there. Idk I'm just assuming.
The simplified definition of "drive line" is the direction the front half of the horse is facing, or the direction that it is going to walk.
Imagine a geometric plane perpendicular to where the horse is moving that splits the horse into a front and back part, right around where the girth goes. That's the drive line. If you're on the head-side of the drive line, you're ahead of it; if you're on the hind-side of the drive line, you're behind it. This is assuming you know where the horse wants to go because there's a fence or a draw.
