I bet Diablo did! Rick was very probably the only person who showed Diablo some affection, rode him properly because Rick is a real horseman not a so-called "expert trainer" who uses whips and spurs, and didn't whip him constantly for every "infraction" (and also to look "tough" in front of the people on the trail rides). Some of these rental horses are just brutalized. Of course not all of them are treated badly but just in my own experience I've seen the "expert rider" leading the trail ride beat her horse the entire ride. We asked her to stop and reported her to the stable owners -- nothing happened to her though because she was an "expert." Now that I think about it I think she was wearing a pink polo-type shirt (no joke)!!

Names are really important, as you said. As a teenager, my first job was guiding trail rides. You get really good at judging people by the way they talk and move, and learn to pick the right horse for them. Also, as a teenage girl, you can expect that sometimes you'll get a group of men who don't think they need to listen to you and can treat the horses any way they want. I had a favorite horse that I kept aside for "the tough guy" mentality. He was a huge, copper chestnut Belgian / QH cross named Yankee. He was gentle to a fault but his size and color made him look imposing, so I always brought him out last when I needed him, and I'd introduce him by saying, "And here's your horse... His name is Terminator." Worked every time, and they were always quiet and careful around him.

My Amish neibor has a team of 6 big mules and horses that his 12 yr old daughter can hitch and drive ,though anywhere. With their eyes up., but still , I enjoyed your story.🤠

I visited Tunisia with my sister in 2014, we stayed at a typical tourist resort with a secured beach. One day there was a guy with two horses, he was walking them and a lady was on one of them, clearly not a very good rider. They mostly walked, sometimes trotted a little. I pointed the horses to my sister and asked if she could lend me some money so I could go and ride too (I was 15 back then, couldn't resist a chance to be with a horse whenever possible). So I went to the guy, asked him how much it cost and gave him the money and jumped on the other horse. He asked me if I could ride well and I proudly said yes, so he let me go on my own. The horse I was on was very calm but clearly badly trained as it didn't understand my clues very well. After a while I decided to try get him go a bit faster, maybe even canter, and like a cowboy I shout "yeehaaaw" and gave him leg and let the reins very loose to give him space to run. And so we galloped on the beach, the guy walking the horse with the lady on it watched me come and go. When the lady quit riding, he jumped on the other horse and we both galloped and the leading horse started to give pressure to the other horse so they ran even faster. I've never felt such freedom with horses in my life as my only experiences were from an English riding school where you must wear a helmet, have a whip etc. Now when I look back I feel kinda bad for the horses as they weren't very well trained or taken care of, but also thankful for the experience.

Being Mexican I agree, they are generally very rough with the horses. The names of the horses in Mexico aren't great clues, they often give them names to make them seem fancy, tough, or if a woman named them sweet.

I so enjoy your horse stories Rick. It's happy and sad. I can't stand it when people hit horses. Not necessary. So cruel. I was at a fair and was watching a horse show. This really fat guy was on a small horse and his horse didn't move very fast. When he got off the horse he started to beat his head with a whip. I jumped up immediately, went to the people in charge and told them that is not tolerated and how cruel he was. They promised to never have that happen again. Nobody else said anything. Poor horse. People can be so stupid. Sorry for my ranting. It was nice to see Mr. T. and Buddy today too. Have a great day! Love your stories!

That part with the "Intermediate Group" had me cracking up!
Daughter and I went trail riding in Denmark, and I purposely moved over to beginners because I was on vacation and just wanted a nice relaxed stroll along the beach with a horse who might appreciate an easy load (they were even nice enough to let me ride her with just a halter.)
Daughter moved over to experts - eliciting same reaction as you got "Oh, really? Well then. Bring her Hakkinnen's halter! If you can catch him, he's yours for the week" (She did and he was.) The name was funny, too - Hakkinnen is apparently a Formula 1 driver? The little gelding sure was quick on his feet. Zero to warp 5 in a NY minute.
EVERYONE else was clustered in the middle.
So I ended up riding alone with my beginner's guide along a lovely little beach, walking the last stretch with boots off and my feet in the ocean. Daughter got her very own "advanced" guide, too, having a grand old time. Slip of a girl, 80 pounds soaking wet, handled the enthusiastic horse just fine.
Big difference was that those horses were well cared for, lived on a nice little pasture in a herd.
Anyways, enjoyed your story a great deal and hope for encores!
    GOOD BOYS Buddy and Mr.T!

Yep. Horses names there's a clue. I worked at the stable at west beach in Galveston. And this girl came in drunk barefoot in a bikini. Well of course I gave her Elvira. She was an expert. Lol. Elvira will dump your butt in the Gulf if you do not know how to ride. She comes back to the barn all wet wanting a refund which I gave her. My boss comes back from getting lunch n asked why Elvira was all wet? I said she just got loose n went to cool off. Lol. The stud horse I raised since he was four months old love to get into the water, all the way to his chest. But my rescued Morgan didn't even want his feet touching the water, it even made me dizzy atop him. lol.

I named my yearling Loki for a reason, its because he is ornery but I love him because he is my first baby and he is respectful even for a yearling, I started to work with him when he was 6 months with his mother near, when he was 7 months he got put in with my older gelding, and my gelding taught him respect, when he was 8 months got him fully halter broke, and finally got him gelded when the vet came out she said that he has one of the best manners of any colt she has ever met, and she said she didn't believe I could of taught him certain things but I did have help with my old gelding. When I finally got him where I could lead him out of his pen he was so respectful even when he spooked at some of my aunts pigeons, he jump to the side but came back at a respectable distance and stood quietly.

Lol Rick, this sounds exactly like my Mexican horseback riding excursion in Puerto Vallarta. My sister and I were the only ones in the "expert" line and we got paired with some "interesting" equines. Needless to say it was an experience I will never forget. My mount seemed to hate being near any other horse so I had to stay away from the group in the back and my sister's horse loved to start kicking at other horses. We stayed on and did enjoy ourselves but I will never forget those two horses haha. We were the entertainment for the rest of the group, the Mexican guys got a good laugh at us staying put on the horses as they would test how well we could keep our seats.

" oh here is Sugar" that horse bucked, reared, and attacked two other horses.(before I got to the barn) Sugar, was a mean old horse with an attitude.( by the way Rick this is true on a horse is never the same, the next time around. )
I did ride it and the cinch was twisted and the pad had something in-between it and the horse.
the following week Sugar was happy to give me a ride.

Rick doesn't say 'no helmets' because helmets are bad per se. The idea behind 'no helmets' is people wear them and do stupid mistakes, the helmet making them significantly more cocky and invincible. Sure, wear a helmet! But even when wearing one, remember you and your head are still fragile when it comes to a 1ton horse.

I busted up laughing as soon as I heard that your horse was named 'Diablo'! Of course my friend and I both did the 'expert' line (they called it 'slow', 'medium' or 'fast' horses on our cruise, so we both picked 'fast'). I asked the gaucho if they had a specific breed of gaited horse that I really wanted to ride, to which he said only one, his personal stallion. So... I got put on a stallion that wasn't used to being ridden by anyone but his owner! Thankfully everything went well though and we really enjoyed the ride, but I did learn a lesson that day!

First time I ever rode a horse it stopped on the trail to eat some leaves and the woman yelled at me "I told you to not let the horse eat" - I didn't think it was such a big deal he was only getting a snack , but she took the reins and pulled his head away - I really felt bad for the horse- he was just a little hungry. How would SHE feel if someone did that to her! Picture it: you hAve a sandwich ready for your mouth and u r hungry and someone pulls it away.

    • @dkeith45
      @dkeith45 Před 6 lety +9

Agree. But what she was trying to combat I think was the horse stopping in the middle of the trail to eat, which slows up the rest of the line if you're on a boarding stable trail ride. I always let my mount eat a little, but I do it by getting ahead aways, then stopping and letting them graze beside the trail for a few mouthfulls, then turn them and go back to the group. You might not be able to do this though, with a boarding stable group. But if it's your own horse or a good friends horse, letting it eat here and there helps build a stronger bond between you and it IMO. Just again, try to pick the spot and the time to let it eat and don't let it control that activity, otherwise you might find yourself cantering along, and your horse will suddenly skid to a halt to eat something, throwing you off in the process, lol.

I understand completely. The horse buddy I ride with the most, used to get pissed off at me for letting my mount, which was one of her horses, eat from time to time. I finally had to tell her, if she didn't lay off nagging me about it, I was going to stop riding with her. Said I'd still be her friend and still help with her horses, but would not ride with her anymore. That shut her up, for the most part, lol. She still brings up the subject every now and then and I just roll my eyes, lol. I see nothing wrong letting a horse eat on the trail, as long as it's on my terms. And that horse at that time, his name was Strike, used to run off with my buddy all the time and was a real pain. But for me he only tried to run off once, I stopped him by turning him in a circle and didn't cuss him out like my buddy did all the time, knew exactly where he liked to be scritched, and let him eat his favorite treat along the trail from time to time, red clover, and he and I were good friends. He was far from the smoothest TWH, but he was a pretty good old boy for me.

It's always a pleasure to ride the more 'difficult' horses with some spirit to them - I HATE being given a deadpan pony that's been so over-conditioned to plod behind another's tail. The poor things look so broken, like all life has been sucked from their souls :(
My favorite trail ride was when I was with my now husband. It was the first time he'd ever ridden, so he was given a giant of a horse who was forgiving of his mount and did everything that was asked of him, but was still attentive and looked like he thoroughly enjoyed his time out of the stable. Our guide was on a very feisty young horse who was in the process of being trained as a lead for this small trail riding establishment. We were interrupted a few times by his playful antics and since we were such a small group and not at all in a hurry, the guide was able to take his time to correct him and calm him down. My horse was a spirited mare who needed extra coaxing to cross the river and neighed at every little thing that caught her attention. I'm glad I was able to take her out as it looked like she enjoyed herself and the guide said she's not often used for the trails because she can be difficult for even intermediate riders.
It's just nice when both horse and rider are able to enjoy the trails together.

Love this story… except for the beating. I went for a ride in Barbados and St. Lucia. The horses were pretty much the same… some were beat down into just walking the trail day in and day out while a few were high strung and ready to go. I was only 16 but, had been riding since, I was a toddler. In Barbados, the horse was pretty easy going and we rode along the beach doing some cantering. In St. Lucia, there were a lot of us from the ship and I ended up with my own Diablo. The guides were surprised that I could ride him without any issues. We got to the top of this huge hill where it became flat and sandy. One of the guides said I could run him if I wanted so, I did. He was probably about 14 hands but, all legs and very fast. Of course, some of the other horses wanted to keep up and one guy fell off. They all looked at me like it was MY fault they couldn’t control their horses. Worst bus ride back to the ship for me but, it was totally worth it!

Great story but difficult to hear the end. :( Years ago I used to specifically ask for Chaos, an App leopard gelding at a rental barn in Mississippi. He was a blast! Always tried to throw you, run into the fence, etc. None of that plugging back to the barn business. Then one day I found out why he -- and other horses there -- were "crazy." The cowboys there would beat the horses between the ears!! It made me cry, and I never went back there. Now that I'm older I would report that in a second. Should have done it back then, but I was young.

Thats awesome loll I will never forget the time I rode a horse named Bear. I was like 12 or 14 and the guide told me, if he stops and you can't get him to move there is a stick in the back of the saddle. Just hit him with it. Bear did end up stopping. And I didn't want to hurt the horse, so I apparently wasn't hitting him hard enough.the guide came over and slapped him hard on the rear loll. Never rode a horse before that had to be hit loll and haven't had to since then

Think Like A Horse if it was, it would have been at Mr. Sanchos or Rancho Buenavista. I lived there for 6 months, LOVE horses, now have more own (didn't at the time) but it took going there only one time for me to NOT want to pay them to go again. I hate how they treat the horses. It was definitely a learning experience!

  • @notadumbblond3
    @notadumbblond3 Před 5 lety +1

Quickest way to tell how much experience someone has with horses, ask one quick question:
Close your eyes. How many times have you ridden? Ten or less hold up fingers. If your answer is more than ten but a number you know, hold up one arm, if you can't count how many rides, hold up both arms. If you've been riding since you were about 5 regularly hold up nothing.
Fingers and one arm go to beginner, two arms go to intermediate, no arms go to expert.
    Boom.

That reminds me of one of my first trail ride! They also told people to divide in beginners, intermediate and experts.. some were honest and stayed in beginners, my dad and others went intermediate and me and my boyfriend at the time went to expert (but I had 11 years experience of riding different horses and went because I wanted to have a fun time, while my -ex-boyfriend just wanted to be cool as he had taken only three lessons before XD big mistake).
So they gave me this filly because I was very light and she was pretty little, was her first time out without a trainer. We had a very fun time, 5 hours ride then she was released in the pasture up the mountain, then I rode the horse of my ex to get back to the barn (because a girl quit at the first "checkpoint" and the horse was obviously too hot for him as had fell off two times already XD).
His name was Diablo! :D I had ridden him one time before and loved his excited temperament, so I had a good time coming back too.
Your story reminded me of my own experience ^_^ I always love to hear your adventures!

I have seen your early youtube about girls and jumping...I have seen all what you describe...I ride English but I am Male...you are right about jumping etc....I wear a protective vest too but do not jump more than a foot.....your video was amazing as I was nodding my head through all of it.....the female drama at barns are horrible as well.
