Idk what it is about humans being around horses and suddenly their ego goes way up and you can’t tell them nothing. I’m gonna teach my boyfriend to ride but if he gets an attitude I’ll just walk off and say “call me when you’re done and don’t come crying to me when you get kicked or trampled or whatever.” 😂. Wow. I needed this laugh😂💀

Matt's Horsemanship yep. That’s why being a horse trainer sucks. You ain’t training the horse. You’re training the dumb people and they don’t listen. So basically they are paying you for absolutely nothing. 🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️. Which is fine by me. But the poor horses suffer.

I’m a divorced and remarried woman and I happen to think you’ve got great advice and are very funny! Your rolling in the river story reminds me of the first time my husband rode with me. No water involved but, plenty of chaos and funny moments.

I have a funny horse story from 30 years ago and I still LMAO every time I think of it. My son and I took my ex horseback riding (he's never been but my son and I were regulars). My ex is wearing a suede fringe jacket snakeskin cowboy boots 🤠 the whole look.
My son and I are saddling up and the ex is walking around looking at the horses, walks up to them and happens to touch the hot wire! He let out a scream like a little girl 🤣😂🤣 of course the horses took off running in a stampede in the opposite direction. Our two horses are chill compared to what they just witnessed. Obviously the one horse was keeping an eye on him, he gets on the horses back and the horse starts bucking like a bronco at a rodeo. How he managed to stay on is beyond me and the sounds that he was making I will laugh at to the day I die.
The barn hand gets him off the horse. My son and I went on our merry way. When we got back 2 hours later we said, how did you make out. He said, well I got the barn witch's phone number 😆
Him and I are still friends to this day. He still gets pissed off when I bring up that story 😂
More than 35 years ago I took my then fiance for his first horse back ride. He was a multi-sport athlete and thought there was nothing I could possibly teach him about anything requiring physical ability. Never mind I was a farm chick raised by my brilliant horse trainer mother. He made such a fool of himself. And, yes, I laughed my butt off. And I married somebody else. Win win.

I like all your videos, but this one to me, is special, because I can see the actual intelligent , handsome and comical man that knows his sh t. I bet you're fun just to hang with. I could listen and learn from you about horses 24/7. You do teach a lot to us all. You're appreciated even though I've never owned a pony, but always wanted too.

Awesome story. Me and my wife were in Costa Rica near Lake Arenal. Local Rancher took us riding on his (he raised Cattle) horses. Not like horseback riding in the USA. All afternoon we rode the perimeter of his ranch. Bitless halter made with climbing rope. Endurance looking saddles. Somewhat hilly terrain. My wife's horse would stop at the bottom of the hills. Wife would say to me "He won't move." I told her "Give him a nudge with your heels and speak up to him. Tell him 'Come on.'" I'm watching her and listening to her beg the horse. I turned my horse around and snapped of a branch from a tree. Got behind her horse and told her to give him a good heel. Then I said "Vamanos" and swatted his rear. He walked up the hill. I told my wife "He only understands Spanish." Of course she knew I was joking.
And my wish was granted! Another crazy horse story! 😂Laughed so hard I woke up my dog and I had to make it up to her with special pink fairy dog cookies!

😂😂😂😂😭😭😭 your laugh is contagious. My bf who has zero horse experience, is always in the next room while I watch your videos. But it's gotten to the point now that anytime he hears your big ole belly laughing howling out of our speakers he ends up coming in to watch with me just for the comedic relief alone. He thinks your hilarious and he believes in the lessons you're helping to teach people. Over the years I've tried teaching him basic horse communication and pressure/release, moving their feet, how to ignore them if you're unable to catch them in the pasture etc. Etc. He hears you repeating alot of the same things I've told him over a period of time and it's helping to show him I was teaching him correct and important information. Because just like you said, sometimes it's difficult to get a friend or loved one to hear you out while trying to teach them how to do something new. Keep on Keepin on Rick, you're shining a wealth of information onto the people of the horse world, both new AND old alike. For That, I thank you! Buddy and Mr. T you're both good boys!!!😊

That's hilarious, my sides are hurting from laughing so hard. Reminds me of when we went on a trail ride in Australia years ago.
The Guide asked us all our riding experience etc, one lady said experienced w/years of riding, I was asked & said have some experience not ridden in a few years, confidence not that good just now. (I saw them galloping the horses out the back prior...Clue #1 LOL). We all get given our horses, which the guides held while we mounted. This Old Guy calls me over to my horse, I chatted with him for a few minutes my mount was a standardbred, retired 8 months earlier. He said to me, you'll have fun with this gelding, his name's Tom & he winked & chuckled at me!
I didn't think much of it & we all set off for our overnight ride, 4 guides including the Old Guy who stayed behind the lead. I was enjoying sitting back from the others & talking with the Old Guy, when we were going up through the hills we had to cross a creek bed, Tom started to carry on I get told hold on or fall off he won't go through it easy. I dismounted & 10 mins later I'd got him over by leading him through it. Much to the laughter & mokery of Miss Expert. I didn't care, safety first for my mount & I. We get up into the windy narrower part of the trail, Tom decides to take off to the finish line, pulled him up (thinking about why I'm on a horse that just wants to challenge me, maybe tomorrow will be better LOL). I took Tom to the rear again, Miss Expert Snickers at me. We all get to the cabins in one piece to camp for the night. We all get ready to mount for day 2, at least I got Tom a little more worked out with what to expect. Miss Expert pipes up informing everyone to watch me so they don't miss me getting thrown!!! That's when the Old Guy said to her, Miss we put her on the wrong horse, you'll be riding Tom today due to your experience with horses. Tom put that bitch on her sorry arse in 20minutes flat & she refused to mount him, I got Tom for the rest of the ride & loved it.
When we all got back to the property that afternoon I asked the Old Guy why I was given a mount like Tom when I'd clearly mentioned I wasn't that confident due to not riding for years. He told me that he recognised me from years ago, plus some & he was confident I could ride him. He said that he was waiting to see if I would remember him, hence the name and breed of my Mount. Then it all sank in on just how small this big World was, I went back up there and rode Tom every week for over a year until I left the State.

I'm currently sick as a dog with the flu, but this made me feel a little bit better. lol laughter really is the best medicine.

I was blessed to have almost 31 years with a Marine. He instilled in me the Marine mentality. He would not allow any complaining on any jobs that we did together. We packed mules all over Arizona, did range fences up in Montana, and herded goats on the California fire breaks in California. I am grateful to him for helping to make me who I am today. I had the privilege of watching him going to the white light when I withdrew life support from him due to a motorcycle accident.

Whenever you talk about women who write hateful comments on your videos, I can barely believe it. Most things you say about how to treat horses are easy to understand even for a non horse person like me. It simply makes sense. And I enjoy it because you guide your viewers to change their perspective and see situations through a horse's eyes. I really like that because I like to get my horizon expanded.
Sadly - obviously - many women never grew up and still use horses, and maybe also their own babies, as a mannequin, as a display dummie, like little girls do. For a 4 year old it is ok to express her love to her doll by dressing it up. Doing this to living creatures is a form of controlling the people/ creatures in their environment, and normally children of this age should learn that they can not control other people and creatures. Instead learn to respect their freedom and decisions. Grown ups who still dress up animals like they used to dress up dolls show a backlog in the development of their personality. No wonder it is pink all the time and not blue or green. There are thousands of 4 year old girlies caged up into bodies of fully grown women. They do not really see other living creatures as souvereign beings like they themselves.
And partly the same women are unable to appreciate a man. I mean a real grown up man who has developed his strengths. Yes, it's true, as you say yourself, you are cocky, not too tactful, a guy with rough edges (some sort of a human Mr. T. ;) ) - BUT you can tell important from unimportant, you know when a situation becomes serious. Actually when you first tried to pull your ex-wife to the shore and then decided to leave her on the ocean so you could get help, that was chivalrous and sacrificially and it makes me sad that no one sems to realize that and women act so offended even when men use their strength to help and protect them. I know that many men already feel like no longer helping women in danger because of their lack of appreciation and even disparagement. That would be a great loss for us women and mankind.

Wow. You put into words a great deal of my thoughts. In particular the fact that there seems to be a whole generation of adults who feel the need to dress up and hide behind costumes to meet groups of people they met online hiding behind a computer. Many people today, both men and women seem to have completely lost confidence in who they are as a person, as a gender, as a human. It is terribly strange and sad. Rick is an example of a strong man, he reminds me of my husband, also an ex cop.
A very insightful comment! I have noticed these things too, but didn't have the eloquence to express them as beautifully as you did. A confident and mature person allows others, people and animals, to have their own thoughts, opinions, strengths, weaknesses, dreams, choices, etc, and doesn't try to influence them to bend to their own will. I agree whole heartedly!
Very insightful. I read somewhere that the reason many women gravitate towards horses is that for the first time in their lives they feel empowered. They have a creature that's receptive and basically bullyable. The woman feels like she's in control, whereas she is not normally so with husband or coworkers. It's an unhealthy relationship because the horse suffers. There is no true communication and mutual trust and respect. Instead, it's one-sided only. Woman ends up believing she is wonder-horse-woman, but has no clue, as Rick points out in many of his vids - the female "barn witches".
It's interesting that it comes down to those women having never really grown up. As you said, they don't treat other living creatures as sovereign. They likely don't treat any humans as sovereign either. It's all about controlling other people and creatures.
Couple that disconnect with many women's lack of proprioception (internal sense that tells you where your body parts are without your having to look at them, lack of muscle control, lack of motor skills, spacial awareness, strength, balance), and you've got a disaster of a human being trying to interact with the real world, sane humans, and very sensitive, perceptive horses.
Men are men, and women are women, and if they each behaved accordingly, things would be better. I can't stand to see a woman trying to dominate a man. I also can't stand to see a man trying to control his wife. There is a proper balance between the two. What some women don't realize, though, is that when she actually lets the man be the leader, it releases her from the responsibilities of his decisions. If the man makes a mistake and he sees how it negatively affects his wife (or girlfriend), he'll learn and will be more careful the next time. Well, this assumes that they love and respect each other, of course! It doesn't mean inequality, but someone needs to take responsibility. There is freedom for women in letting the men take that responsibility!
Rick, you tried, but if she didn't want to listen or to acknowledge your wisdom and experience, that's on her. Did you expect each other to change, though? After all, something led to the divorce. I would say that that episode about the horse in the water was a clue: She wasn't willing to listen to you when you knew the right thing. Heads up, then, when it comes to your next girlfriend! Find someone who respects you. Then love her with all your heart, and keep that love alive.

Haaaaaaa!!!😂🤣My ex never did ride our horses ( Baby)! We also went to Hawaii for our honeymoon and didn't fall asleep but but ended up drifting so far away from Ohau beach on those blow up, 1$, rafts that the people on the beach looked like ants. Luckily we were competetive swimmers. We could barely see someone running back and forth blowing a whistle , we assumed at us. We were yelled at when we got back and the eve. News showed a large tiger shark roaming around near the beach! That was back in the 80's. So funny! Thanks for sharing, "Buddy and Mr. T , your good boys"!!

I went on an endurance trail with my ex. He borrowed a horse from a friend. When we got to the creek, bit higher than you described. My friend said, "wait here, watch when he gets in the water, he's gonna lay down, he always lays down in water". So we didn't tell my ex and the horse goes right in the water and immediately lays down. I peed myself that day....he was an experienced horseman too, it just happened so quickly, he didn't have time to react.

Thank you for sharing. You have an amazing sense of humor so think you for the laughter. Most of my horse stories end with me getting clothes-lined, scaring my mom to tears or sliding off the side bareback. I always wanted a horse but I've settled for a cat who is a very good boy too.

So I dumped the water out of my boots, got him up, and rode my wet, soggy butt home. My husband asked, "what happened to you?" My response, "Everything."
