- Americans Hanna (Julia Garner) and Liv (Jessica Henwick) are best friends backpacking in Australia. After they run out of money, Liv, looking for an adventure, convinces Hanna to take a temporary live-in job behind the bar of a pub called 'The Royal Hotel' in a remote Outback mining town. Bar owner Billy and a host of locals give the girls a riotous introduction to Down Under drinking culture but soon Hanna and Liv find themselves trapped in an unnerving situation that grows rapidly out of their control.

The remoteness and isolation of the Aussie outback needs to be experienced to be understood..movies like this are the next closest thing.
If this hotel is so remote where are all these customers coming from??
@@Lefishn"hotels" are actually roadhouses, drinking spots for locals and miners!
Wake In Fright was truly disturbing.
You need to know that places like this exist everywhere. This is nothing new to people in the country.
As an Aussie, these outback towns are no joke…it is a different world out there with its own culture and rules.
Sounds intriguing, any movies or books that delve into this?
Cheers-
Why is that? Any explanation?
@@edp3202Because it’s remote, there’s a general distrust to outsiders for some people in rural/outback towns.
You just say ghetto

even as a guy having worked in the service industry, this is legit terrifying
RIGHT. This doesn't say "based on actual events" but up to a point you know it is!
It actually is inspired by true events - the documentary Hotel Coolgardie.@@BearingMySeoul
Even people who haven't worked in the service industry knows how bad it is.
I worked at a bar and some of the pushier customers can be very intimidating, doesn't matter if you're a guy or girl
@@NTWoo95 The main characters are girls and the angry customers are mostly men.
I don't have a lot of hope that this will not be about toxic misogynistic, fascist dudes harassing strong independent progressive girls. Oh and ofc "aussies dumb and bad".
Unless there will be some interesting twist.
“If you want to stop me, you’re gonna have to FUCKING KILL MEEEE” I love Julia Garner. She’s an incredible actress!
Yeah right! Why not give her an flamethrower instead if an axe there?!!!!!11 And maybe like.. why burn down the house when she could like melt it with lava or something instead right? WOHOOO! Also, the tires... she could like used some knife and just stared into the camera or like a minute and say like the word: "Typical males." Or like.. "Yeah, take that males." Maybe? Also. The acting of the males... why not make them a bit more rude and maybe some zombie infection also? They could start like scree aching and such?
Why stop here? I would watched that movie. hehe
Yeah, she held back here, for sure. Some Aussie virus getting around.. Just saying the C word, etc.. hehe.
You know i lobe you. Some criticism maybe there. Peace out
This is totally based off a documentary-style show made about 2 Finnish girls that go to an outback pub in outback WA - Hotel Coolgardie... Amazing that they have Julia Garner!! I was scared of the first version, but this looks terrifying. Think Wolf's Creek!
The name of that doc, please?
@@mrdonivy8 The end credits of the trailer say hotel coolgardie
@@mrdonivy8 the doc is called "Hotel Coolgardie" I am not sure how I landed on it, but it has stuck with me ever since - worth the effort to find it.
Omg Wolf's Creek terrified me
Wolf’s creek is the scariest movie ever!!
Everyone is talking about how great Julia Garner is and yes I love her as an actress but I also love how Jessica Henwick's career is booming!
Yeah I miss seeing Henwick on screen I hope she gets more projects
they both deserve way more roles
(Henwick) Probably the most unknown / overlooked Game of Thrones hottie // **
Thank you for that, I knew she looked familiar!
@@magesalmanac6424 you may also have seen her in Iron Fist or The Defenders
I hope Julia Garner ends up in more movies.
I heard she's in the running as Madonna for an upcoming biopic
@@jaguar5198 I heard that movie was cancelled.
@@adolfopena7358 thanks for telling me. Nonetheless, whatever Julia's in, she'll kill it.
Great actress foreals
Having spent 6 weeks working in an outback bar when I was travelling in Western Australia back in 2001, the first few minute and a half of this felt like a flashback! Was certainly an eye-opening experience!
Julia Garner really stood out to me in Ozark. Great series and also great performances throughout
Jessica henwick is so underrated. She should've broke big after iron fist and game of thrones. Heres hoping she gets more roles especially as a lead in the future.
It’s because she’s Asian and there’s very limited Asian female roles! There’s no reason why she didn’t broke big she should’ve been big by now.
She should have been Iron Fist. But it's good to see she's getting more roles.
@@yumemi99 Well, I mean, _season two_ .... (Trying not to spoil anything.)
She's lucky she kept her career after the way GoT did the sand snakes so dirty.
she's alright
Brilliant idea for a thriller. The remoteness is an amplifier of all the elements you see generally in society: men without boundaries, tribalism, clashing of cultures, etc.
Jessica Henwick in a thriller, I do not need to know more. Now, I just need to watch it.
Give it to Julia to play a woman who's put in a weird place. She masters these roles 🎉
Eden Lake. Wolf Creek. The Royal Hotel. Australian film companies/ filmmakers truly know how to make some scary as hell thrillers.
Don't forget it started in 1979 with Mad Max.
Good one. Absolutely. @@ichigen511
@@ichigen511 actually it started with Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975).
Wrong, wrong and fucking wrong... started in the late 18th century through to the early/ mid 19th century when british colonies decided to transport convicts from Ireland and Scotland and Wales to Australia... blame the english...
It comes from living in a country where nearly everything wants to and can kill you…
Julia Garner is always superb and this legit looks brilliant!
Never not superb straight up.
this movie was severely underwhelming
@@mississippibilly_ sucks to hear it
Kitty Green does it again. If anyone hasn't seen The Assistant, give it a shot. Both of these films have all these details that make you want to scream "god I know exactly what you mean and why this is unsettling". Great horror thrillers
I'm getting a Wake In Fright (1971) vibe from this, not in the plot exactly, but in the eerie and unsettling remote, aberrant small town-culture atmosphere of it. Looking forward to this, it looks genuinely tense.
I just commented on this myself, and then I saw your comments!
@@caro1ns As did I. Placed it two years *later* ...
I saw Toby Wallace in The Society, and he was a terrifying character, i’m excited to see what he’ll do in this!
I've just watched The Society a couple weeks ago and I was soo sad that the show ended. Glad to see Toby Wallace in this movie! He definitely nailed his sociopath role in The Society. He's a great actor.
one thing Toby is always gonna do is play a psychopath and do it perfectly
He is a brilliant actor
To me Julia Garner is a young Meryl Streep. This girl can act. Would love to see them together in a film.
I've seen almost all her movies and shows and she's definitely one of the best actresses of this generation.
She’s better than Streep. You can sense the inner life of the characters she’s playing. An actor’s ability to inhabit another’s life seamlessly without a hint of impersonation is not Streep’s strong suit. Her acting style is better suited to exaggeration and comedy.
Yes, it is Streeps strong suit, which is why I compared. Guess you have never seen Streeps most serious roles. Kramer vs Kramer, Silkwood,The French Lieutenant's Woman, Sophie's Choice, Doubt etc etc... Streep original works were not comedy or exaggeration in the least. @@twilightbabe123
Don't insult the girl. She's better looking than that.😅
@@twilightbabe123 No. Wrong!
Love Henwick and Garner, gotta check it out when it releases!
The Assistant was a great movie and I'm glad to see Kitty Green and Julia Garner working together again.
Paid £10 to watch this absolute tripe , kept waiting and waiting for something to happen also an hour and 40 minutes ill never get back !!!!
I am looking forward to this one - what a stunning cast.
Horrible movie. Never seen anything more bland and soulless then this movie
Even the trailer looks boring
This gives me flashbacks of a horrendous holiday I had at 17 with an idiot British schoolfriend on a Greek island in the late 70s. She thought she could flirt with every Greek man in a bar, sit on their laps, take free drinks from them all night and then saunter away with just a wave goodnight. A few years later I travelled solo Mexico and Central America and felt safer than I had with her.
What happened that night on the Greek island?
God I hope nothing bad happened to your friend.
OP is lying, they both were being little thotbots, birds of a feather flock together, u telling me you had a horrendous holiday on a greek island? Lmfao gimme a break, OP just jealous her friend was hotter and got more attention w/o paying for drinks
you absolutely should be able to wave good bye at the end of the night, nothing about flirting, accepting a drink or even sitting in someones lap should make them feel entitled to you body or sex with you. consent can be revoked at anytime.
@@brandyirisgrote in a perfect world what you said sounds great! If only we could control what intoxicated or stalker type individuals are capable of when they think they have a chance with someone.
Never has an actor scared me more than Daniel Henshall.. my stomach drops whenever he pops up in something
After Snowtown that is a normal reaction
Garner is SPECTACULAR !!!! Can't get enough of her...Imagine her becoming RUTH in the end. Can't wait for this one.
I'm so fucking ready - also finally these two actresses in leading roles in a GOOD film, ecstatic
“Inspired by the documentary Hotel Coolgardie”
Yeah that doco was horrifying in itself! What a hellish experience for those poor girls. Very intrigued to see this!
I can’t wait to watch the beautiful and talented Jessica Henwick! Love her diverse roles nowadays! ❤️
I hope she gets an Oscar someday. She deserves to be in more movies.
Getting a massive Wake in Fright vibe. Hopefully the kangaroos are treated better in this one.
My thoughts exactly. A cameo from Jack Thompson would top it off...
A24 & NEON are always killing it! 🙌
They still release a lot of interesting films, but they're not batting a thousand anymore.
This is based on a documentary about two real girls going to tend bar in rural Australia? I saw that
Yeah, says “Inspired by Hotel Coolgardie” in the credits at the end
@@magnusmuir Thanks! I couldn't remember what it was called.
I get the impression that, as vile the culture of the town, this will be as much about the 2 girls culture shock and paranoia and not so much about the townspeople being psychos but just really awful backwards misogynistic types that push the young women to the point of lashing out. I wouldn't go in expecting a literal thriller. Trailer reminds me of God's Country.
So, another 'men are evil' load of crap.
that's what I was thinking too. especially that scene where she tells him she's had enough. I was waiting for him to say something insulting about "this American cunt" or something like that lol
Jessica Henwick should be in more films.
Buddy, you have no idea, she's like my hero, even without the matrix or marvel.
She's in a lot of films, you just aren't watching them.
Julia Garner & Jessica Henwick are a great pairing!
Ruth is getting more work! So happy for her
Really like Julia and Jessica, this looks really good! Must watch for sure!
Saw this at Telluride. Good movie!
Jessica Henwick? I'm there :)
Jessica Henwick is a force of nature
She should get more leading roles.
"Down the back, up the stairs" had me thinking this would turn out to be a horror movie.
Julia Garner is a great actress and living in Australia for a few months was one of the best times of my life. Looks interesting!
I'd watch Julia Garner reading my shopping list.
This looks like an adaptation of the documentary Hotel Coolgardie about two Finnish backpackers in a remote Australian town that has some very uncomfortable footage.
Yep, says “Inspired by” in the credits at the end!
Without the murder plot this is a reenactment of Hotel Coolgardie doco!
Looking forward to the watch.
Omg Ruth from Ozark and Colleen from Iron Fist ❤❤ such great actresses!
This looks incredible, I can't wait!
Brilliant casting. Two of my faves playing opposite of each other. If not for them, I'd probably pass on the film. Now I can't wait to see it.
Just saw the entire show, thanks
Two of my 5 favorite actresses. Must see.
Great cast, including 'Agent Smith'! Looking forward to this!
Love Jessica Henwick..! She's gorgeous 👍🏼
Another great Australian movie 👍👍
Both great female actors ! ! I love them in the other movies/shows they’ve been in ! !
The way this trailer moves so effortlessly from its carefree what-if opening... to something deeper and darker... wow. I literally had to stop watching at 1:44. I didn't want to know anything more. I wanted to savor not knowing, and anticipating.
I am surprised it was so good. Interesting characters and plot.
Very good. But people are dumb nowdays so they don't understand why its good. And its also hilarious. This is more a comedy than a suspense movie
@@kolapse320 It was a thriller, drama, horror comedy without being any of them. Lol
@@ceasarrw maybe not to you. I thought it was hilarious. And the menace wasn't from monsters or psychopaths, just crazy drunk guys. This movie has my respect for the acting alone. I had a great time

Damn ruth langmore in the house

I refuse to believe this isn't a horror movie. I absolutely adored this film!
Horror, nope, thriller, nope, drama yes, a dull, going nowhere ,very flat drama.
The final scene is hilariously bad.😂😂😂
Ok believe what you want. I think is a comedy film lol
It was a trash movie
The horror comment was clearly sarcasm, dipshits. Yall can dislike the movie, but maybe don't be a waste of time or space

Julia Garner: "Australia scares me."
I'm getting similar vibes to Wake in Fright. Looks good.

She played Ruth langmore so well its... soooooo hard to see her play another character
You got this Ruth, if you can manage Marty's casino, this is a walk in the park, lol
I'm pretty sure the writers used the documentary Hotel Coolgardie as their muse for this film. Hotel Coolgardie is a doc where 2 Finnish girls go to work in an Outback pub that is filled with some pretty rough and strange customers. If you're interested in seeing The Royal Hotel I suggest watching the real-life version in Hotel Coolgardie.
Is this gonna be a movie? Or streaming somewhere?
Two terrific young actresses.
Song?
Jessica Henwick career is moving forward in a good direction.
I’m a Aussie who lives in Australia and the remote towns are like this. Even I, as a woman, would not stay or visit these remote places.
The movie I didn't know I needed
What a superb cast. I need to see this.
Absolutely will be tuning in 😍
Julia Garner, ozark girl, I watching this!
when the description calls it The Roval Hotel 😂
Looks like a October 6, 2023 release date. Julia Garner was great in the Netflix series Ozarks.
Does anyone know the name of the song that starts playing at 0:47??
Good film and Jennifer Garner is great, per usual. I did see the documentary this is based off of and I kinda like that better. It was less sinister and more chaotic, tbh. The girls in the doc stayed the whole time and while I won't say they learned anything about themselves, they certainly learned to stand up for themselves.
Middle of nowhere is always a bad idea.
I went to the Outback in Australia expecting the worst. What I got was McDonald's and KFC everyday, a modern supermarket, internet(back in 2004) and extremely friendly, civilized people.
America is way scarier.
feels like Wake in fright meets Straw Dogs meets Cocktail
This movie reminds me of my teenage school years attending a strict religious school in Australia where the teachers were monsters and the bullies owned the playground.
Julia Garner is really something 😍
