- Nintendo UK put together an utterly confusing promo tape for Super Mario All Stars that has odd reviews of other games, the guy from Red Dwarf, dull descriptions of racing games and flying through space!

Thanks!
Thank you, Sean!
That warping effect with dull delivery bit is one of those rare jokes where repeating it over and over just makes it funnier and funnier
It really is so unintentionally hilarious it's brilliant. You couldn't do this on purpose if you tried I swear.
It passes that magic threshold of being so brazenly inane and witless that the idea of it even being funny is funny in and of itself, and doing the same routine over and over doubles the effect each time.
I give this comment, a 2%. Milk.
I can’t breath.
It’s too funny.
Help me.
In all fairness this wasn't created by Nintendo themselves, but by their UK distributor, THE Games, run by the newsagent chain John Menzies.
They were also total clown shoes, refusing to release games like Earthbound, Chrono Trigger or Super Mario RPG amongst others.
What a bunch of wazzocks!
To be honest, I think them not releasing games like Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG etc. had more to do with Nintendo of Europe not wanting to go through with the "burden" of translating/localizing those games into other European languages.
Hello you! Keep the good work, love your videos!
@@Parkinski27 Funny, because those games were released in my country (Brazil) and they were all in english, just the box art and the manuals if we were lucky were ever translated. lol
@@Parkinski27 odd considering at least WE (U.K.) speak English too 😂 I understand the whole translating for everyone but wouldn’t everyone else feel left out?😶
I love how they couldn't be assed to find somebody who knew how to play the games they were hired to promote or record decent-looking gameplay footage. Every clip looks exactly the way people play when they're playing Nintendo for the first time ever and keep making mistakes because they're not used to the controller yet.
It is truly amazing how incompetent this looks and sounds. And how dry and boring the rest mostly is. What a perfect combo.
So it's no different from today's game journalist coverage?
@@supermariof0521
Truly, some things never change.
There's definitely a reason I call them "game journos" these days and it isn't a term of endearment. If anything it's gotten much worse in the age of clickbait.
Nintendo and LISTER FROM RED DWARF!! 🤯 We have in our midst a complete smeg pot! Flipped out. Thanks for unearthing this bit of history
OSW rules! OOC, Jay, and V1 are in my Boys Stable
Have you guys ever done an episode about wrestling ads and merch ads? That would be fun to watch.
Indeed I love learning
I remember the game being advertised by Rik Mayall... That is all
Let the war-ios begin!
When Craig Charles is given a presenting gig, he REALLY throws himself into it.
This is the best unofficial episode of Red Dwarf that I never knew existed. I was expecting Lister teaching Kryten how to play while Rimmer was playing ET on Atari.
Rimmer interrupts by claiming Sonic is far better
I can tell from their intense and passionate delivery that most of the people featured here went on to work for Bevanfield.
XD YEP
That’s an insult to Craig Charles good sir, he has not done 12 seasons and a movie of Red Dwarf to be insulted like this
I love how they show a Street Fighter move thats basically in the game manual.
"I'm gonna do a thing...............I hate when I do that thing!"
To be fair that's me the morning after every drinking session.
Not only can you still die by “diving into the river” but swimming isn’t even possible until you get the flippers which is a little bit into the game 😂
Man, you went above and beyond with the special effects in this video. It makes me want to buy a Super Nintendo.
My god..
I wasn't expecting you here Sam.
Nom nom
It makes me want to buy an Amiga with a Genlock and a copy of Video Toaster.
If I wasnt in vacation I'd put the Giygas music over it.
@@MforMovesets Good of you to follow the golden rule of vacationing: never put the Giygas music over things.
90's marketing was always... unique, and that is certainly true for Nintendo. This tape has to be a hidden gem of weirdness.
5:21 ...What.
Nintendo in the '90s, was as 90s as it gets. The commercials from the entire decade are some of the most iconic and amazingly over the top stuff you'll ever see. How do you advertise a game like Yoshi Island super Mario world 2 show a guy stuffing himself until he explodes of course. Truly peak Nintendo.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu Still funny, but that commercial is just a reference to Mr. Creosote from Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life.
The story goes: A handsome prince once denied a haggard old woman to seek shelter from a storm in his castle. Unfortunately, this woman happened to be a witch and she cursed the prince, forcing him to narrate a promo tape for Super Mario All Stars. It was an afternoon he will never get back.
Old man comes in thinking he’s expected and ruins everything in his typical style _“everything is so wet, it’s completely useless now HEEEEEEEEEEE”_ and chucks various things into the trash
Old man: "OOOOH, a delicious flower!" **eats flower and gains fire powers**
That's a creepy pasta I never wanted to hear...
@@ArendAlphaEagle "Mmm a delicious mushroom!" (grows to giant size and crashes everything)
This is history at it's finest. Weird but strangely entertaining. Also, Peach in that cinema-themed commercial... Queen is slaying all right.
Simping for Princess Peach are we?.. person of culture. ;)
Yeah, she looked really cute in this animation style.
I can see I'm in good company here.
How much culture it's overwhelming.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu For sure, friend.
I dig the glittery dress, someone please make fan art.
Bummer, they couldn't even bother to interview Mario's real life aunt and his teacher who wished him luck to become a plumbing-master.
Anyway, it was fun to watch.
Thanks for sharing it.
also his cousins and peaches best friend she never talks to

@@schlamuffenimperator9460 me too buddy, me too
It was like watching a live-action version of Bevanfield...
Phelous, thank you for finally explaining where the good Luigi sprite from Mario world comes from. I’ve been wondering where that was for years, since I always assumed it was a fan thing that became official, not that they were being lazy for the original release.
I've always been so used to the unique Luigi sprite since that's the version of SMW I owned and it's always been odd to me that so many people didn't realize that Luigi got his own sprites in the All Stars + World version before the GBA one.
I think the weird part is that the GBA version actually uses even _another_ alteration, being rather based on Luigi's appearance in the 16-bit version of Super Mario Bros 2 USA... even though they didn't need to.
Thankfully, Super Mario Maker 2 uses the Super Mario All-Stars + World version of Luigi in the Super Mario World style levels.
I also got surprised to see the Green Mario/Luigi from the original World because I only ever played the one from All Stars+.
@@ArendAlphaEagle For me personally, I've always found the Luigi sprite from Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 to look better and more accurate.
@@phelous i think it has something to do with when that specific version of the cart was released. By the time it was released, kids had both games seperately and probably didn't think all-stars + world was essential especially since that version of all-stars was a snes pack-in. So not alot of people knew about the unique luigi sprite.
Which is weird since i did get my snes around that year. yet all-stars and world were in seperate carts when i got it.
Super Mario All Stars certainly did not live up to the hype. You think it’s going to be a cool crossover with a bunch of Nintendo characters, but then you get a super long musical number in the middle on how to say no to drugs. That final boss battle with Smoke was brutal, though! ;)
You thought Smoke was the FINAL boss battle? No wonder you didn't think it lived up to the hype, that Smoke battle was just the end of the tutorial!
@@lmcgregoruk 😂
These promo tapes more often than not seem like they're meant to make you *not* buy the game in question.
I know 😂
It's like anti-marketing, like everyone is so unenthused and bored talking about this how is that supposed to translate to the audience watching this caring.
When one of those games is busby... yeah...
16:18
That's not even mimicking the narrator's dull tone; that's just the average reaction of anyone who tries to play a Bubsy game!
I always enjoy Craig Charles' over the top, excited child style of hosting, he's the main reason why I watched Robot Wars
He really committed to it, he acted like there was a genuine war underway . As if outside the studio the first scene of Terminator was playing out.
Takeshi’s Castle was fun for the same reason.
And with Philippa Forrester of course.. good reason to watch! Oh, and killer robots too.
Apparently all of Nintendo UK had two modes of attitude: DRUG CRAZY and profoundly depressed
I always prefer drug crazy.
That level of enthusiasm and over the top 90s AF attitude is what gives me life.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu It reminds me of the guy from the old Nintendo Power competition who was just always jumping around, waving his arms, and WOULD NOT STOP TALKING
That was one of the funniest damn reviews I’ve ever seen! The monotone voice was hilarious!
I didn't know that Bevanfield's Aladdin did the voice of the narrator from a Nintendo promo.
I guess they tried to look for an alternative.
I'm lovin' these "Promo Tapes"
probably 'cause while they make sense, I never seen 'em 👀
9:35 The phrase "Hidden realm of Hyrule" could either mean "Hidden realm named 'Hyrule'" or "The hidden realm residing within Hyrule". So they're not really wrong.
I don't call the dark world a realm OF Hyrule, it's more like an equal to Hyrule. What made it part of Hyrule?
@@troywright359 It's faster to say "Hidden realm of Hyrule" than "Hidden realm pararell to Hyrule".
@@HiperPivociarz I guess that's faster. I was just thinking it's essentially the golden land/sacred realm, and although we say the entrance to it is in Hyrule, we don't say it is part of Hyrule
Frog Suit may be favorite power up, I loved using it in non water levels.
It's awesome see that Lister was an expert at Super Mario All Stars. I'll bet Rimmer only plays Hotel Mario and the CD-I games.
Nah he probably used the CDI to play Flowers Of Robert Maplethorpe
22:50 It's funny to me that, for all that the Super Scope is an enduring iconic Nintendo item, it's only endured so long because it's an item in Smash.
I really appreciate the Craig Charleses of yesteryear. Over-the-top cheesy hosts like him would give even the most the mundane of shows and presentations a fascinatingly weird and engaging energy. It's like they're from a completely different reality, where everything is exciting and fun.
he was a riot in red dwarf, if from this brief review you want to see more of Craig Charles work I highly recommend watching it if you can handle British sitcoms it's funny
@@mattb9054 Huh, I've heard of Red Dwarf many many times over the years, and heard lots of good things about it. Never got around to watching it, though I guess this odd coincidence is my signal to do so!
Thanks very much for the info, never would've known about that! Definitely looking forward to seeing him in something more genuinely entertaining.
I love how they pronounced Jafar’s name as jaff-ur
😂they don’t say it like in the movie?
To be clear I say his name like they do in the movie
My dad would say "The Return of Jaffer" as a joke
@@BagOfMagicFood cool
Jaffa.
15:29 Oh, great. Now Phelous has morphed into Nicolas Cage.
Saying Bubsy is a "cult hero" in America isn't the same as saying he's a cult classic. It means he's an inspiration to American cult leaders.
XD
I have the feeling that Nintendo UK was actually Bavenfield, maybe they share the same office.
Checklist of things I never thought I'd see in this life....Longneck Phelous. Noted.
Also, damn, this one makes the Pokemon preview tape come out like a fast-paced action epic by comparison.
That was phallus Phelous, and it is hilarious
I wouldn't worry about the UK pronunciation of "Mahhhh-rio" when they call it "Street Fighter 2 Tarbo" and "the evil Jaffer." Also, there was some officially licensed Super Mario manga where Pauline did wind up hooking up with Donkey Kong, and for some reason the marriage made her fat. Yeah. That's a thing. An officially licensed thing.
To say Nintendo of America and Nintendo Japan are a bit different is like saying there's a slight difference between hot dogs and hamburgers and ramen and sushi. They were way more over the top and wacky and could get away with stuff they wouldn't even try to over here.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu Nintendo Japan seems to be a little more tolerant of their adaptions than Western ones. They did put anime only Escargoon into a Kirby game, even though it was a brief cameo. I don't know what their exact deal with the Super Mario-kun Manga is, but I think they basically tolerate it if they know its non-canonical. Of course, Japan's branch probably has a "what I say goes" when it comes to official mythos. Don't get me wrong, I love Yoshi's Island, but I HATE that it killed the Western backstory of them being plumbers from Brooklyn where Luigi is the younger brother. And don't get me started on the nonsense of "Oh, they're not plumbers" or "they're not Italian" or "they're not really human" or whatever click-baity nonsense they come up with.
Still, Pauline letting herself go after a bestiality marriage? I'm getting flashes of DA fetish artists here.
@@mightyfilm
Yeah the more I hear about Nintendo of Japan the more I don't understand. I mean they've invested in "love hotels" and that's the least crazy thing. The Japanese HQ has all the true power and basically what they say does goes. Europe and the US are PR branches pure and simple. They do translating/localizing and that's basically it. It's just always so weird and jarring as Japan is always much more freewheeling when it comes to content and always has been and much more squeaky clean everywhere else. I guess I'm going to have to track down that manga cuz now I'm truly intrigued.
2:31 Every Phelous video is personalized
I got Nintendo Power so I got some of these, I'm glad these weren't lost to time, as silly as they may be. Such a weird little time capsule of the 90's.
5:02 Sexy Princess Peach will forever be burned in my memory now.
Bow chicka bow wow
3:34 I think that adults just perpetually assume Mickey Mouse is popular but in reality kids are just kind of indifferent toward him. I was a kid around this time and we didn't really give a s-- about that damn mouse. I'd be surprised to find any generation since has.
🤷♀️I beg to differ 😂 he’s still got merch
I’m more of a Daisy Duck fan, she made watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse more tolerable.
The only person I know of who actually likes Mickey is my little nephew, but he's also turning 2 next February.
@@gracekim25 Which mean nothing because who buys them? Adults. Why? See original post. 😂
Mickey had a slight bump in relevancy in the early to mid-90s with some really good games. But not really since even with some decent cartoons.
Seemed the British still liked using the dry and stuffy narrative style even when describing some of the greatest games of all time!
16:26 - Well if Bubsy ever was a cult hero in America his venture onto the Playstation certainly ended all that!
The only cult classic thing about him is the Rob Paulson voiced animated pilot for the show that never was.
That wasn't dry and stuffy.
Dull and lacking in enthusiasm but not dry and stuffy.
I honestly love this early video game stuff. It's so weird and usually low quality, and yet so entertaining. Would love to see you check out more like this in the future!
fun fact Craig Charles currently fronts the technology consumer show the Gadget Show on Channel 5 so he has not left his gaming past behind him
OH! I’ll have to check it out
"Craig then beams to a grungy hallway with chains hanging from the ceiling."
Where did he go, Butlins?
This was probably the most 90s Gaming video I've ever seen.
My SNES came in the box with a separate Super Mario World game.
I love how they try and big up *working at the fucking hotline*, like you're gonna exclusively be playing whatever games you want instead of having to talk to barely-articulate children asking you "how do i jump in mario"
I love how the people working there just exude existence is pain energy. No amount of hype could get me to work there.
0:48 Chris Jericho: "I'M A GAME WIZARD!"
*throws fireball*
This feels like a “Did You Know Gaming” video from an alternate universe where they started out in the ‘90s and didn’t get all their facts straight.
Finally a promo video that’s not afraid to completely ignore the game advertised for 80% of the video’s run time.
Very cool to see these back to the past vids, it's a nice time capsule
I grew up with the GBA version of Super Mario Bros 3., which is essentially a port of the SNES version. I also grew up with the SNES versions of the other Mario games through All Stars.
You know, I rather take the weird Super Mario All Stars promo than the NES “You cannot beat us” commercial any day.
I love that commercial.
Even with your... ro-bot-part-nah?

Never heard of such thing as a promo VHS because they didn't exist in my country, but it has such a nostalgic vibe to it. Like a time capsule of the 90s.
I urge you, if you haven't already, look up the UK advert for All Stars by Rik Mayall.
He was the face of Nintendo adverts for years. He bought a big house with the money he earned and called it Nintendo Towers.
I love how 90s British this promotional video is. As a Brit this takes me back to a happy time of my life.
I had NEVER heard of this promo tape before; what a ride this...experience was. XD
Thanks for providing with the 'infotainment' as usual Phelan! Had a real good time watching this.
I am so glad we got that "Treehouse" promo for Donkey Konky Counkry instead. It was ridiculous, but at least you could say the people "hosting" it had actual energy.
You don't think Craig had energy?
@@Gambit771 It was like he died standing up.
I remember once finding a "Diddy Kong Racing" promo VHS at the Salvation Army. It was insane.
Everyone looks like they'd rather be somewhere else than be in this.
The Nintendo wizards actively sounded like they were praying for death. Like trapped souls hoping for release.
Phelan you're videos are really funny, cheers me up too
Pauline is the Carmen Sandiego of the Mario world
From the I am unintended robot moment... to the hilarious colour warps and flat delivery , I was quite able to muster up a few giggles!
Heck Yeah! I just did a playthrough of the All-Stars version of Lost Levels, it was so insanely tough I can't imagine playing the NES version!
Edit: I even used that 1up "cheat" from the video lmao
11:42 I'd be a bit disturbed if my co-worker just came over and laid across my desk like that to talk to me. Perhaps a bit intrigued as well but it's like "dude, I'm sitting right next to _nothing_ . Maybe that's a better spot?"
12:30 Spoke too soon. Could you go back to laying across my desk? It's less creepy.
The part where you edited in your own weird visual effects had me cracking up. Great video!
i first saw this tape when Dan Ryckert streamed and man is it really something lmao. it was great watching you dunk on this, esp the weird sleepy segments
Phelous: "... and I did do a video review. And here we are. I guess it all worked out."
Shredder: "Or not."
I remember that bloody sped up Starwing footage. That is the only way the game was ever shown in advertising. I was so confused when I got the game and it was running at about a quarter the speed. Still a great game though.
It was so fun to see you mocking their lack of enthusiasm and silly effects, I hope you find and review more Nintendo tapes like this in the future 😆
As well as Starvox, there was a Commodore 64 game called Starfox that was released in the UK. The company that made that, Argonaut Software, later went on to work on the SNES SuperFX Chip!
the changing filters reminds of when i would do that with my first phone for the fun of it XD so thanks for that, Phelous :)
1:14
In the Japanese version, he's a woodsmith. Ironically, though he's no longer an actual plumber as of Odyssey.
3:33
Believe it or not, this was true at one point. Safe to say Disney were not happy and since then has been doing everything to make sure more people recognize Mickey than Mario.
7:26
The so called g2 cartoon is ironically missing the overly bright colors and wacky paint jobs.
10:33
There is an old non-Nintendo game called Star Fox. While that was no problem for them in the US, they did have to worry about it in Europe at the time (though that ceased to be the case with Adventures; which should have remained as Dinosaur Planet).
13:52
The genesis version on the other hand was actually animated by Disney; hence why the animations there are still decently impressive.
20:22
But can be seen as an exploit. Nintendo not intend people to get THAT many 1-ups from that trick. Heck, Super Paper Mario will actually deduct your score if you do it for too long.
23:40
That 3d collection is still lazy. Not to mention they screwed over Galaxy 2.
Anyone who’s not Craig Charles sounds so dull and lifeless. Maybe they should think of an alternative.
It seems like they added the Craig Charles parts just to keep the audience from completely falling asleep.
More videos should feature the Garfield phone! 😱 also; I could watch Phalous be sarcastic and play with filters for at least an hour, maybe an hour and a half. 😗
Holy shit I remember this! ...also Phelous just mentioned Coronation Street and I'm not sure what to do what that
I love it
Smeg off! I literally just finished watching an episode of Red Dwarf, this is amazing.
Phelan gets a lot of mileage out of that dull voice, stretchy face thing. He knows we love that!
Not since the Nerd's "Plumbers don't wear ties" review have I laughed so hard at a reviewer mocking the on-screen graphics design! Awesome vid by Mr. Porteous!
Salut from Quebec mon ami :)
The part about Koopa Beach being made up for Super Mario Kart is actually doubly true.
Not only is it the first mention of the name 'Koopa Beach,' it's also - as far as I know - the first true recognizable sandy beach level *in the franchise!*
I love these dead inside lads reviewing Mary-O. These nostalgic promo vids are great
Real Bevanfield energy in that narrator
Ah, yes, very well-kept secret cheats about SMBAS, but they couldn't discover the greatest cheat of all; When you jump on a koopa shell, Mary-oh can actually kick the shell simply by walking into it, thereby causing damage to any blocks or enemies in Mary-oh's immediate vicinity. Thrilling stuff, wot.
6:04 Nintendo and Sega we’re still fighting then
The Sega Nintendo rivalry was real everything else was nothing but hype.
He was also on the show Robot Wars.
Old Super Mario world treasuries have been discovered, awesome man
Those Koopas need to find a new way
3:16 my parents certainly did, back in the day XD Always bought my own games since
Either this is some cultural difference where dry, droll dialog is a selling point in the UK, or they put as much effort into the gameplay as they did their enthusiasm.
I think it was mostly due to all these people being teenagers who REALLY didn’t want to be on camera
@@bloodrunsclear eh what you said🤷♀️
Although um does being sarcastic count as ‘dry humour’ if I enjoy Phelous so much?🤣
Ah yes, the '90s.. aka, the 'tude decade.
Wow, this made me feel more like a kid than I ever would’ve dreamed. The old Halcyon days of the video game wars. I never knew about this tape but I remember my dad getting one for donkey Kong country and being stoked about it. Perhaps you would be able to cover that one in the near future Phelous?
Also, in regards to all stars(sans SMW)
Has anybody else ran into the same cheat/code that I did when I was a kid? Starting a new file and doing some button combination on super Mario 3. And then pressing the select button to cycle through all the different power ups like the frog suit or the hammer bros. suit.
Was never able to replicate it and could never find it anywhere else.
Promo tapes are a relic from a bygone era. We need promo tapes back, dammit!
Now THIS is my kind of Phelous review!
I'm glad that the Bevanfield Beast got some work doing narration of adverts for Nintendo Games. Good and kind chap in and out of the recording booth.
11:42 "A hotliner is someone who has played and beaten all nes, gameboy and super nintendo games."
lol really, that was the job requirement? BEAT ALL GAMES FOR OUR THREE SYSTEMS!
7:47 I always forget how the US had the horrible PURPLE ONLY buttons, instead of the 4 colours that most of the rest of the world got. Also how SQUARE 8:35 the cartridges and console were. Instead of the rounded corners and sleek design that most of the rest of the world got.
The narrator is like a British George Wood (the weird guy from Gaming in the Clinton Years) XD
HOLY SHIT! I remember this tape, it was what got me interested in getting a SNES so much so that I was asking my mum to get me one with Super Mario All Stars in the year of 2002.
The only thing I knew about anything SMAS promotional thing before this was the use of boxart Magician Mario as a Cardboard Stand for a Holiday Nintendo Retail Training Video.
Fun fact: The truth about the Starwing name change is simply that the English HATE Foxes. ;)
