Pokémon is a lot like life: once you hit the seventh inning stretch, your horse may or may not be clean enough to go bowling in the swimming pool. But hey, that's just Pokémon for you.
I could imagine this being someone’s yearbook quote😂
Yeah, except Pokemon is nothing like bowling! Didn't you watch the video!
@@Cycl0idyou’re right. It’s more like golf.
Old man: HUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
I give that a perfect 10 strike out of pikachu👌
Ah yes, the 90s, when the worst thing you could do was be genuinely excited by the things you enjoyed.
Mostly cause you were scared your parents would ground you for getting hyped about anything. Cause they cared too much about their wallets.
So many people still haven't quite seemed to internalize this.
I hope Suzanna is out there living her best life, getting unreasonably annoyed at people who don't how to play Pokémon.
"You're *done* ..."
This is the most passive aggressive training video for a children's card game I ever witnessed. XD
This video is such a hilarious concept. "No! You stop enjoying our product in your own way right this moment!"
Honestly it's a sentiment that Wizards of the Coast and Nintendo have taken to heart over the years
"If only baseball had leagues, so we could continue using our poor analogy."
Baseball has leagues, but not in the same way as Pokémon, it's a "farm league" system (including MiLB and rookie leagues in Florida, Arizona and the Dominican Republic) before you get to MLB
I feel like Parent A and B were actually trying to have some fun with the game, but Suzanne had no patience for such a thing.. in a game. lol
It's cuz they're parents, and according to the youths, parents are inherently lame no matter what
@@Account_Not_Applicable Especially in the 90s.
Parent B looks like Tucker Carlson
Man, Jimmy probably had vietnam flashbacks when he started playing the pokemon videogame and he found out that some pokemon only evolve via trading.
"Wanna trade your pikachu with my haunter?"
"Shut up, it's not about trading!"
Well, maybe he would expect that, because you see, Pokemon is a lot like war...
*fades into a depressing greyscale dimension*
The best strategy in Pokemon is to set spell cards during your turn. Your opponent might be misled into believing they're actually trap cards.
Wait...
Chuck Norris won a Pokémon tournament with nothing but his dinosaur quartets deck
Nah, the real play is to use Professor Oak and Bill to draw into the 5 pieces of EXODIA THE FORBIDDEN ONE.
Nah Chuck Norris would draw all 5 pieces of Exodia on his opening hand and thus instantly win any duel
"You sank my pokémon", is legitimately funny
Pokemon is just like Baseball, the optimal way to win at both is use performance enhancing drugs! Do you know how many Rare Candies Hoseiken Seiko was on, his IVs were through the roof!
That's a lot of dingers!
I'm surprised the episode where Ash finally became a Master wasn't immediately followed by an episode where he gets put on trial for using performance-enhancing rare candles.
Hoseiken Seiko was such a legendary baseball samurai.
Jesus don't try and teach these guys Yu-Gi-Oh! they'll have an aneurism.
Yeah 😅
Or Digimon either. Their brains will melt out of their skull like liquid.
What about the Neopets TCG? What would happen if the kid tried to teach 'em how to play it?
Magic The Gathering is where it's at.
@@scottylewis8124 If you tried to teach them Bakugan, they'd be confused as to how the toys work in cooperation with the cards!
I literally feigned knowing how to play for like two years, and even played in a bunch of tournaments. I wasn't terrible, and no one knew I didn't know how to play, even the adults. Hearing how many people didn't actually know how to play, makes all the pieces come together.
Imagine you only got to play in those tournaments because the people who organized them didn't know how to play either.
"Alright, I place my Charizard Face-down. That means you have to Go Fish.
And because of that, I have Uno!"
@@SakuraAvalonand just like that i got a straight flush
@@marcusfridh8489 Which means you need to go back to Square one, and roll for initiative.
They're gonna be real mad at my roommate who buys and sells trading cards for a living.
We need a Dingo Pictures card set. I wonder if Phelous catched them all.
Should I exchange my Tio II for a Wiener?
@@andreasnickmann370 Tio is a ground Dingomon with useless flying abilities. Exchange him for Oro.
@@KorenLesthe I have the super rare Wabuu card!
Lucy would have used "Mah Gawd" but can't find her damn hair brush.
@@unwaifu69 Tien: "as a matter of fact: it isn't."
When Phelous talks about VHS tapes, I'm glad that I'm not the only person in the world who still has a VCR 😅
Cherish it, dude. Mine stopped working a few years ago and I haven't been able to find a replacement to date.
Thankfully, I actually currently have two working VCRs. One of them is a Sony SLV-775HF Hifi-stereo model that my parents bought circa 1996 and the other being a Mitsubishi HS-U795 S-VHS model with jogwheel from circa 1999 that I acquired from an ebay seller earlier this year. In fact, I am actually thinking on getting more vcrs someday. Maybe a vcr/dvd recorder combo, another S-VHS vcr, or a 6 head vcr would suffice.
I forgot to put either in the last sentence of my comment. Darn!
I remember being on the little league Pokémon team when I was a kid. It was deep into 14th inning and I was down by 3 Charizards when I threw a poke ball with a sweet back curve and won the whole Johto tournament!
This brings back memories of hosting the Pokemon League events at Toys R Us on Saturdays in 2001. I still have the metal badge pins.
I think you discussed having to view or show this tape once
The absolute hatred and disdain by the kids for the adults is absolutely hysterical, I was losing it through the entire demonstration. You were only mildly exaggerating with the "flames, flames on the side of my face" line.
This might be my favorite type of thing you review. Something about 90s videotapes is special because they'll never make anything this earnestly cheesy again.
🎵 You teach me and I'll *hate* you! 🎵😂
Honestly that's how I'd feel if I had to watch this. Instead of listening to people tell you that the Pokemon tcg is like baseball or horseback riding just learn to play it like I did; by playing the TCG Gameboy game 🤷♀
Also I like the contempt this video seems to have for people who just collect the cards lol
Ah, yes - the classic trio of Bessy, Dave and Meow-oof.
Now I can finally feel like a Pokémon master.
the teacher of the game be like: *HOW DO I REACH THESE KIDS!!!*
I was hoping Phelous would make that reference
What kind of loser trading is this? Authentic trading at school leads to fights which then leads to your school banning the cards.
Ah yeah I understand THAT reference 😂
7:32 - This moment sorely lacked the clip of Allison saying "Wow, great Simpsons joke, Phellan!"
My guess is the people who made this video saw the episode where Ash traded his Butterfree for tuxedo man's Raticate and really took the trade remorse to heart.
Well, this video makes me never want to play the Pokémon card game or even collect the cards. Also, I'm skeptical that any of the "parents" in this video actually have kids.
Yep😂
Who needs a “how to win on gambling” video when you have a Meowth! Am I right lol
Oh I always forget how weird the 90's were. There were videos like this about everything back in the day and I can actually picture parents buying this for their kids
Those parents in the class looked as dead inside as Old Man's daughter, Beauty. You just know they were hoping someone would come and die (on the inside) in their place.
I need Phelan's Pikachu shirt to really become a Pokemon master.
20:30 To the kids' credit, after seeing the Cassidy and Butch episode, it turns out that Team Rocket apparently gets their own motto wrong every single time. :-D
My folks blocked certain things from us complaining how it portrayed grown ups as idiots or annoying and I didn't notice what they meant of course until I was an adult too. Maybe the script writer had some unresolved issues?
Now I want to see how Baseball Cards would battle
Phelan doing his best dingo laugh at the end
Passive aggressive annoyance and disinterested sarcasm?......
Yep, this was definitely made in the 90s.
That sounds like most CZcams videos I see today
Somewhat off-topic, but watching how this Pokemon Trainer Video plays makes me glad the Yugioh Duel Masters Guide DVD was much more straightforward on the gameplay
Especially when it taught the valuable lesson of banishing your opponent to the shadow realm.
@brianhebert6152 oh definitely XD
It's truly wild to see Maulik Pancholy (Jonathan from 30 Rock) in the back of the classroom
Thanks I was going to ask, I knew I recognized the dude.
@@Gandaleon How has he not aged like a day though...
16:20 this Pokémon card promo video is intense guys you can feel the special defense going down in this room
I'm pretty sure the video is inflicting psychic damage on me just watching it
I love these videos. Growing up I had no clue how to play the card game either.
Yay Pokémon history lesson ❤I love obscure 90’s stuff before my time 😊 or in this case when I was only 1 years old 😂
I get the idea of teaching the parents the game so they can play with their kids but the barely contained resentment is hilarious.
I might've played the card game a little bit back in the day, but even then I focused more on collecting the cards themselves. And even then, I was more invested with the video games and anime. It's still amusing seeing these videos 'explain' the card game, though. Also, that Pikachu-Palpatine (Palpachu?) t-shirt!
Oh, this video hurts so much. Not even knowing it's a glorified commercial from the 90's saves it *lol*
This tape brings back good memories! Back in the mid 00s I played Pokemon competitively with a family of incredibly skilled players- JohnnyBlaze and his sons. We drove all over New England and the tri state area for tournaments. I actually came in second in states with a homebrew Piloswine deck. :)
Maulik Pancholy is also in this as one of the stupid adults. Actors really have to just take whatever work's going
I forgot how embarrassing alot of the early pokemon promo stuff are to watch. Especially the ones relating to the trading card game.
Kinda glad i learned how to play the tcg via the gbc trading card game. Given, didn't matter because everyone around me didn't know how to play and would just rather trade their cards or steal them from each other.
bro, I always love your videos, but this one is something else. I cant stop fucking laughing.
Me and my partner still play the card game on a regular basis. A nice simple game that can kill an hour when we're both free
Contempt for trading, mid-life crises at twelve, bowling, this has everything!
I was expecting a pop quiz at the end of the video, now what will I do with all of the notes I took during this video. 😢
This is great because for me Pokemon came out right as i thought i was getting too old for childrens games. Now i wished I bought this tape to become a master!
After years of watching I'm starting to suspect that Phelan likes the Simpsons and Star Wars
Amazing how many cards in this video I recognize from my childhood collection, considering I really never knew how to play and these kids just left my sad stupid adult ass even more confused.
Phelous’s commentary in this was hilarious
I categorically agree: the Alolan Raichu is the uncrowned prince of the franchise.
There's a lot of actors in this classroom that I kind of recognize some TV shows. I can't place the all but I do recognize
I think I know less about how to play the game after that!
I…definitely need a Pokémon pick-me-up so thanks Phelous 🙂
Retreating is situational at best - Ive found it far more efficient to allow that ‘Mon to take a larger hit and put in a fresh mon who has been prepped during that extra turn.
Only retreat if losing that Mon means losing the match.
Like Life Points in YuGiOh, its only the last prize card that counts
I remember that Pokemon game where you went to different locations and one of those locations was the Station Nightclub Fire Memorial which made many of the family members of the victims and survivors very angry.
Pokémon GO?
With all the "Parents are so LAME lmao" vibes coming from this, I can't possibly imagine what decade *this* was made in.
Phelan is making the video way more entertaining than the actual video. Ha. Pokemon is nothing like baseball cards.Ha.
POKEMON?
POKEMON? With the "poke" and the "mon" and the bleh eh ah AH AH!
I'd love to see spoofs of this video for older and "out there" CCGs like Illuminati, Dixie, and Redemption.
Or one for the Neopets TCG
I kind of love that they made playing the game look about as interesting as doing your taxes.
I'm from Europe, by the way, and I don't remember anyone I knew ever playing the game, everyone just traded and collected here as well.
Your reward will be LEGENDARY Phelous!
Dang it, Phelan, haven't you seen the Karate Kid? Only through repeated bowling and shoveling of horse crap can you gain the reflexes and cunning to be a true Pokemon master. The answers were right in front of you!
Love the CLUE reference
Frig me, you were on fire in this one.
I like the plushies you have in your background. Especially the orange Yoshi one. I got two plush Yoshis that are blue and light blue. Also I got that gameboy color handheld still! 1:21 By the way so glad you brought the A&W rootbeer theme again. It's one of my favorites. ^^
after the teaching the parents are like "lets play bayblade YEAAAAAAH"
BAY BLADE BAY BLADE LET IT RIP
I remember I had both this and the sneak peek at Pokemon growing up. I always thought the sneak peek one was cheesier, but after watching this this one has some golden moments as well 😂. Now if I can just find this and the last Turtles on tour VHS I'll be set. I have the Christmas one and the live show
I remember owning this vhs. what a blast from the past.
It would be pretty awesome if in the 90’s they made an instructional Pokémon game video tape that’s starring Don Beverage.
James Coburn would have been great if he played Prof. Oak in the training video
Why do those black and white filmed kid segments have a “Maury/Steve Wilkos” backstory feel to them? 🤣You know, those clips they play of the people before they come on the show with them walking around city streets looking pensive?
7:27 Pokemon is a lot like baseball: THERE’S NO CRYING IN POKEMON
The first movie begs to differ
Phelous the girl in the pool was holding just a Water Energy Card! Not even TGC would have kids be dumb enough to carry an actual Pokémon card into the pool!
The pokemon tcg as a whole always surprised me it had a strong fanbase considering how the rules of the game even now are confusing and not straightforward, i was always more a yugioh guy because of how easy yugioh is to understand
I always thought it was a bit confusing, but then I played the tcg video game and it does a good job of explaining the basics in a straightforward way.
I think you might be the first person I've ever seen call Yugioh "easy to understand"
Yugioh was easier to understand back in the day
Yugioh is only as easy to understamd as the combo deck you are playing. Your opponents deck doesnt matter since you can always understand how badly you are losing.
The rules are really simple. So simple they have then on the battle mats
This instructional VHS's comparisons between Pokémon and Baseball reminds me of a sketch on the animated MAD TV show that used to air on Cartoon Network about a decade back (circa 2010-2013) that was a commercial for a fictional product that parodied the Big League Chew bubble gum but it was made out of dead Pikachu which gave it electric properties. The name of that product btw was Big League Pika Chew.
*remind
Sorry
It has always annoyed me that I can't edit CZcams comments on the mobile version of this site.
6:42 Kid: Flames, flames on the side of my face
17:10 HAH! I see you used that quote!
I wondered if their marriage would survive that game
A lotta potential murderers in this Pokemon video.
I just love the amount of hatred you've put in some of the characters towards some of the parents lol xD
Wow, that horse story really brought us around and back again.
I never really played the game. I was also more into collecting the cards, always liked the artwork and if TCG is apparently like baseball, guess I’d probably suck at it to.
The one guy who in the black suit and gray shirt and tie who asked a question played Jack Donaghy’s personal assistant on 30 Rock.
Pokémon is a lot like life. It comes wrapped in foil and doesn’t always have a shiny. Oh wait. That’s my lunch.
"the best there ever was"
What a missed opportunity for Bret Hart to make an appearance...
Pokemon chewing tobacco never caught on in the states. XD
These type of tapes are always a trip. I only use to collect and I never played the card game. So I guess the kids here would hate me too.
I hate trading! 🎵 I think it's the worst!
I recognize Benjamin W.S. Lum from the couple of episodes of Married With Children he did as one of Al's No Ma'am friends. He seemed to be a that guy actor who showed up in small parts in movies and T.V. shows. He was probably a union actor, so I'm not sure what he was doing in a non union production.
"I traded for a Vaporeon."
"Everybody, hands down."
This hits different.
Okay another actor in there is the guy in the suit who asks about trading cards in class--Maulik Pancholy probably best known for 30 Rock he should also be known for somehow not aging because he looks IDENTICAL now to how he looked like 3 decades ago.
I remember this video.
So weird early pokemon was.
Well, thanks to their methods, I've effectively forgotten how baseball works
"losing is NOT a good thing" how much did this tape cost??
