I personally upgrade to the latest ones. I'm fine with them.
The most important thing is to have a smooth experience in games.
As an example, i tested 399.24 vs 430.39 ... and the newer one had given me the impression of a more consistent performance.
A lot of things depends of your system ... in what shape he is, overall.

In which game, exactly? It looks like ... something is using your CPU beside the game/games.
Look around ... open task manager and see what is using your CPU.
Did you upgrade WIN 10 to august update? This update have huge problems with cortana/search ... your pc will use 30-40% of your cpu for nothing. Uninstall the update if this is the problem, until they fix it. (I talk from experience, i did this because my cpu was on 30% all the time without touching it ... and search was not working at all)
Check nvidia control panel ... look for shader cache and set it to ON. After that, in first match or max 2 matches ... your cpu usage will be a bit high until he memorize what he needs for a future experience. (other matches)
Do this first, with control panel ... and then look at task manager while you are ingame and see what uses your cpu.
