So I took an IB Design tech class and in this class we learned about Ergonomics and how different products are designed. The rule is to generally design for 95% of the population meaning that odds are that if you are either above that or bellow it you won’t be accounted for. This is where you get specialized products and stores. Then you have things like cars where you realize that it becomes increasingly difficult to design for that 95%, and that’s why sometimes you end up using dummies that represent the average. Now that horrifying thing is what represents the average. The government does have data for this but you end up finding out that most of this data represents the average male in the military in the 1940s. Most companies need to go out of their way to conduct their own research on average sizes as the government’s data is rather lacking. First a military build is vastly different from the average man, people are generally taller now, and also women are hardly represented. The issue is a failure to update this data. This actually happened in the 1940s with Military planes as back then the data was from 1926 and what ended up happening was that pilots would crash the planes because their sizes were not matched up to the proper size of the time and planes were designed with data that had been outdated. Overall there is a huge issue with how the US uses the average to design as now we have cars designed only for a particular gender and only for a specific height. I am above the height of the mannequins used thus meaning that cars are not designed with me in mind ( I’m also not even that tall, just around 6’). For women it’s worse and is most definitely a result of there being lacking data for it. Additionally most of these likely aren’t looking at different ethnicities which also has an impact on the size requirements. Overall this issue is a result of outdated data that needs to be updated on a regular basis while also representing the largest amount of people possible.

This is a problem in testing of all kinds such in medical related things like medication or how to look for symptoms of certain things. The way a female body presents symptom of heart attack are different and more subtle than a male, but most people are only ever taught male symptoms. Same thing for adhd or autism which also presents different symptoms and characteristics between different sexes but generally only male presentation is well known or taught which leads to a lot of missed diagnosis because a girl might be suffering from inattentive adhd but since she’s not hyperactive and was never disruptive in school, she may never get treatment.

With autism and ADHD they r still studying things, like with every mental disorder. So even in men you can have some misdiagnosing happening as they still know a little amount aboot it. But i member a autism expert saying that she wanted check for at least a decen autism test for women and if there is a correlation between autism and Gender Dysphoria, although i have spoken with her years ago, idk if she was able 2 do much with either, partly because of government hating ppl with autism and the LGBT. She was 1 of the very few caring ppl i have seen in the government controlled healthcare system we have here. FWY i have a form of autism myself, either have ADD, ADHD and dyslexia.
With the heart attacks i do would say they teach the average person it would make sense they teach the easily noticible and most common symptons 1st partly because time and ppl able 2 member things, but ppl in medical field should know more than that.

@@PureMaddnessOne of course there’s always going to be misdiagnosis for any gender, and we’re still learning all kinds of things about disorders, and not everyone is going to show the stereotypical symptoms associated with their assigned gender at birth, but it doesn’t change the fact there’s an implicit bias in these studies and in your every day doctor that makes it far more likely for those that are AFAB to receive worse care more often. Things seem to be getting better and awareness is rising, but there’s still a long ways to go.
And I disagree about this heart attack statement. It’s pretty obvious that someone with chest pains or difficulty breathing needs medical attention. It is more important to teach the every day person the sneakier and less apparent symptoms of heart attacks. People who exhibit those and not the classical chest clutching pain are more likely to write off their symptoms as something else like heartburn or indigestion and are therefore far more likely to die. Teaching people how to look out for more subtle symptoms can save the lives of others and yourself.

Slick roads can _absolutely_ make you lose control of your vehicle through no fault of your own, regardless of your sex. Maybe there's some subconscious sexism in the wording of the example, but it's certainly not implying that women are just _bad drivers._
I've had my tires slip hard in the rain and cause the car to lurch in the opposite direction of where I was steering. Snow is even worse. I once slid slowly down a snowy hill, inch by inch, with the brakes held fast, spinning around in circles and praying no cars were in the canal-side road at the bottom, finally coming to a stop just a foot or two shy of sliding right into the water.
Neither of those things were my fault, and there was nothing I could do to stop them despite being a safe, experienced driver. Why would you think the NHTSA using a woman in their example implies that either women are bad drivers, or men have a magical ability to not crash even when they literally _can't control_ where the vehicle goes?
Gotta be the NHTSA's wording. Sorry, I didn't mean for this to be a rant, and I'm not trying to accuse you of internalized misogyny or anything. I just genuinely think you're making a pretty big stretch with your thesis here.
    Cheers!
EDIT - The crash test dummy problem is definitely a huge issue, though, and that definitely does imply the presence of systemic sexism.

My mom is small, and when I was very young, my parents got in a car accident. They were hit so hard that they went into a spiral, and my dad had to hold my mom into the car by her thigh because her door came off. Thankfully when I was a kid, my dad was a total gym bro, because the bruise he left on her leg was the worst one I've ever seen, just totally black, so you can imagine just how much force was trying to fling her out of the car.
Also I have a question. Car manufacturers aren't going to make major changes to car between the different countries they sell it in, so shouldn't place like the EU or Japan's crash test standards be catching this stuff and forcing manufactures to account for women's safety? Because of that, I just don't understand why women are injured more. Could it be down to the fact that women have lower bone density, which makes them more susceptible to skeletal injuries or their ribs being more likely to break, putting their organs at risk?

So, obvious sexism in the crash scenarios aside, having the female dummies be 5th percentile makes a little sense, if you decide that a woman with the height and weight of a 50th percentile man would perform the same in a crash scenario.
The safety issue is that the female dummies are 5th percentile and not like, 15th or 30th or something, and the crash tests are too conservative with their dummy use; it should probably be something like "front crash with all seats filled with male dummies, front crash filled with all female dummies", etc, rather than "husband with his wife", or "husband with his friend" themes.

The "pink" ones that are basically just the male version but slighty beautified for "womens sentitivities"; The "slightly tinier" which is decidedly better than just a pink paint coat, but often worse quality and then there are the "diamond in the rough", that both take into the equation womens needs and doesnt look like the intended demographic is made of off suburban housewives that think they need professional equipment for their hobbies, But the caveat is that they cost a lot of $$$ from limited supply vendors (and you will never ever ever ever see replacements for part when things need repair).

I don't work for the US government or car safety firms, but I am a certified project management professional, am certified for ISTQB-FL, and am a software QA Test Lead. I didn't take the time to research the cars you showed, but the likely reason you're seeing the tests you're seeing isn't due to gender discrimination (despite the obvious correlation), and more likely a result of lack of time and resources to rigorously test the vehicles. The testing center most likely has a handful of cars available for testing purposes and thus can only perform a set number of accident tests. Men drive 60% more than women, and are responsible for 71% of accidents. The smaller dummies are not only useful for women but small people such as children and teenagers, who are also more likely to be injured in accidents. The choice of accidents and dummy chosen may be based on long-term statistics they have about death rates and are choosing the group most likely to die or be seriously injured, or are using some sort of automation or algorithm to ensure long-term equalized testing even if certain vehicles do not have that. I mean the number of combinations of passenger layouts, driver dummy types, accident tests would be insane. Let's assume there's 5 standard types of dummies used, 2 for men and women, and 1 for a child. That's honestly probably low. That would mean in a standard car that has 5 possible seats with 6 passenger combinations per seat, there's 7776 seat combinations. Assume there are 5 standard accidents that they test. With each seat combination that's 38,880 tests. That would be asking for more tests than fatal auto accidents in 2020. These are of course rough numbers, but goes to show why extensive testing is a fallacy and simply isn't possible. A handful of tests per vehicle would likely be enough to assess its safety rating based on a standard they've used for decades.

But your point about bone density and with carrying fat is apt and not something I considered. Regarding the head rest, I'm curious how it works that it presumably is soft enough to cushion a man's head, but the firmness needed is different for a woman's head? the proportion differences causes to ultimately slightly different sitting postures. this can be reflected by dummies, a woman is no harder to mimic than a male despite the regulations making it seem otherwise. studies have found that the sitting posture and aforementioned factors lead to severely more whiplash and neck injuries for women, the cushion is too firm to make their heads and torsos go into the seat at an equal rate as men's do. this is just a youtube comment so a better explanations with real testing can be found through just searching "whiplash gender rates" or "neck injuries car accident" in "google scholar." a lot of studies have been done in the last twenty years as its one of the clearest indications that men and women are treated differently in car safety and it matters. its really shocking how just changing the softness of a cushion could have avoided so many injuries and potentially deaths. and thats just one aspect of car safety

It makes sense now that you mention how the weight distribution is relevant due to posture and sitting position, and how that can affect how one is in the seat cushion to be protected from a potential crash in that way. Eh, honestly I dunno if having a 40 pounds heavier dummy will change anything to the 2 ton SUV crashing into you.
Also, unless you're a genetic anomaly, as a woman your height and weight are gonna fall somewhere in between the 5% female and the 50% male (reminder: to be taller than 50% of men, you'd have to be taller than 95% of women) and results can be extrapolated to you based on these two points. In reality, tall men are less taken into account because the 5%female is a useless data point for them.
Having legislation mandating SUVs to actually be crash compatible with normal sized cars would help a lot more. Did you know that SUVs are only crash tested on other SUVs? They just assume they're gonna ram into normal cars and unalive everyone inside anyway lol

Pretty sure people in between would be safe.
Also why not point out the increase in vehicular fatlities due to the increase in weight in vehicles over safety regulations and the increase in vehicular manslaughter due to people being drug under these super high bumpers rather than being rolled over the roof of the car like with older vehicles.

I'm glad this is a concern that you have and that is being put out there but this video does feel a bit under researched? it sounds a little bit like a reaction video instead of something that you might have written.. for example idk if this is the case, it's entirely possible that your impression is just right, especially given the numbers you gave for women's likelyhood to be injured or killed in an accident, but it ocured to me that maybe what is not being acounted for are the poeple outside of what is represented by the dummies intead of the peope in the middle (of course, for this to be true they would have to use both dummies for every test instead of only one, so maybe not) so maybe the people not being considered here are those who are smaller than the small dummie and bigger that the big one, or lighter than the light one and heavier than the "heavy" one. This doesn't really agree with your data because it would mean that there are more men unacounted for than women while the data says that women are more likely to die or be seriously injured, but maybe the problem is that they're not doing every test with all dummies instead of the one you're pointing too (i still mostly don't think this is all because both women and men have two dummies and in both cases the dummies are pretty similar, but maybe that's a problem too) but my point is that there is an inmediate asumption being made (that is probably right) that doesn't sound researched, it sounds like the first impresion of someone not versed in the matter, getting angry about it without bothering to ask someone who actually knows.
idk if i explained myself very well, it's very likely that you are right, I'm not here to deffend a very obviously misogynist goberment from the acusation of being misogynyst, the issue i took is more how you said it than what you said.

This is a bad video, and you should feel bad. The average man is 5'9" and the average woman is 5'6". Testing that 3 inch difference is going to give far less data than testing a much smaller woman.
Also, bad weather can absolutely cause accidents through no fault of the driver. There's absolutely nothing in the 3rd scenario that implies the woman driving caused the accident.

@@007kingifrit I don't mean to be rude, but no, it's well documented that for a long time men were considered the "norm" and female test subjects were frequently excluded from medical studies entirely, meaning that studies on thousands of people--studies that still form the basis of our knowledge about conditions that are very common regardless of sex, such as heart attacks--included no women at all.
Apparently researchers often assumed that women would be affected exactly the same as men, an assumption that would have been proven wrong if they'd bothered to find out. Or sometimes they assumed that female hormone cycles would complicate things. Which is nonsense, because in cases where that is a factor that would affect things, it would be important to know that before applying the knowledge gained in the study to a population that is half female. Also, the FDA used to officially recommend excluding all women of potential childbearing age for the sake of preventing birth defects. Even those with no significant risk of becoming pregnant did not have the choice to participate. Things are getting better, but it's a process.
I really advise against assuming that everything is fine, the government knows what it's doing, and discriminatory practices aren't real. The more you read and listen to credible sources of information, the more you learn that everything is broken.
