I want to point out that Bollywood has been remaking movies since the early 70’s mostly from tollywood. For example Ram aur Shyam a 1967 Hindi movie is a remake of Telugu movie Ramudu Bheemudu. But below I have mentioned a few movies from only the last three decades mostly which everyone can relate to and appreciate the south Indian industry and recognise their hard work. Also please note that some movies are remade in Bollywood after a decade passed in the original language. There are many other movies that I can’t take the time to mention such as the recent one Laxmi bomb or the upcoming Jersey. The below list is endless so I only mentioned those are in my mind right now. Enjoy the list.

I am from Kerala. We also make a lot of crap along with great movies.😅
On a serious note, it is heartening to see more love towards Malayalam cinema. I wont say its the best, rather the audience is extremely critical.
Telugu and Tamil have given us some really good entertainers, which are sorely missing from Bollywood. They also make some really hard hitting cinema, both in realistic and commercial (eg Asuran, Karnan) formats
Kannada is on a revamp mode. Really loved ASN and Kavaludaari.

As a Malayalee who watches both Malayalam n Hindi cinema, what i find abt Bollywood is that most of its movies only help u to escape from reality. its more about having energetic songs, dance moves, glamour etc. Not much importance is given to realism except for biopics, historical dramas and movies based on true events like Dangal. Whereas Malayalam movies r wayyyy better. they have more realistic plots n r too damn relatable. u can actually learn life lessons from them. another thing is that mollywood industry is not dominated by family clans unlike Bollywood where the kapoors, bhatts, etc rule. Hence this makes Malayalam movies more enjoyable as u get to see many new faces frequently.

    My opinion:
The Malayalam industry is currently the Industry with more substance and less flak in it's movies.
Tamil I think is a close second, but sometimes you guys go a bit nuts with the noise level and action.
After an almost 30-year streak of relatively mediocre movies, Kannada movies are finally finding their feet again and are on their way to regain some of their 70s era glory.
Telugu movies are the absolute wild card. You never know what to expect with Telugu movies. Sometimes, the most random shit happens and sometimes the movies are super Sophisticated.
Bengali movies are usually good, but are often underexposed. Marathi movies have the same problem.
Assamese movies are interesting, but I don't see many of them(it's more of an accessibility problem).
As for Hindi movies.....you guys were never the same after the mid 80s. An especially morbid decade was the 90s where it was either all action or all sentimental romance bs(for the most part). You tried to try something new in the mid 2000s but your audience was still the same sentimental 90s crowd. And in the 2010s decade, you were back to your 90s style of masala, action, romance and produced only like 2-3 actually interesting movies every year. Better pick up the pace if you don't want to be left behind.

Marathi, Bengali, Malayalam, Tamil cinema is and always has been better than mainstream Hindi cinema. It's just that because of the sheer population disparity and language barrier between North and South, majority of North Indians don't know about this. Sadly, it is this population difference that makes them think they can claim to represent "India" when the fact is that there are other wonderful industries producing great work like Assamese, Kannada and Manipuri as well whose audiences would also prefer to watch and relate to their own respective content.
Also, North Indians generally have a habit of not considering anything which isn't made in Hindi as Indian or "national" and relegating it to a "regional" stature. Whereas atleast between the Southern states there has always been a high amount of exposure and appreciation for cinema across each other's languages.
OTT has made the north more aware of the rest. However, according to me, all cinema is Indian cinema. And nobody needs any validation from North Indians to call their cinema national or otherwise.
Excess population + relentless Hindi imposition by every government since Independence has caused this mindset in the North.
Btw none of this is to say Bollywood is bad or anything like that. It's just not at par with the others and never has been. Hindi OTT has been pretty fab, but cinema, not so much. Problem again is the population. To connect with the large population, there is a lot of essentialisation and the rootedness of other industries is lost.

The OTT platforms have broken the language barrier. Indians themselves have started watching lot of content from other languages which is not their mother tongue. South Indians have always watched each other movies because of the familiarity of languages that always existed. What now has happened is North India is getting more exposed to many other languages which they had never thought of. OTT has made it possible.

Talent people is everywhere whether it may be kollywood , tollywood , mollywood , sandalwood , or bollywood but the reason why south indian films are better than bollywood is that the talent people is identified here . But bollywood won't do that because it is a larger market and it is dominated by some people and if there embrace the talent of new comers then obviously there will be thrown from the industry .
As I am from Tamil Nadu , I will point some examples from kollywood ,
Director lokesh kanagaraj who made his directorial debut film called Maanagaram , and then he directed a film called kaidhi with a budget of 25 crores and it made a box office of 100 crores , then he directed a film of tamil nadu's top actor vijay called master . The thing is that he was identified and allowed to show his talent .
And the fun fact is that bollywood is remaking his both films ( Maanagaram and kaidhi ) .
Another example is director nelson whose first film is kolamavu kokila and now he is directing a film of vijay . The bollywood is also going to remake the kolamavu kokila movie.

The title itself is demeaning. No cinema is truly ‘national’ in India in order to call some other cinema as ‘regional’.
    The title could have been:
‘Hindi cinema vs other Indian cinemas’

is bollywood international and telugu, tamil , malayalam, kannada etc movies are just for 1 or 2 crore people??
Bollywood vs regional films, that comparison made me laugh...
when do u understand and signify an industry rather than south or north...
Bahubali series is a tollywood film but it doesn't make whole tollywood great... Rajamouli and his team is great...
While Robot movie is a Kollywood film.... it's the result of hardwork of Shankar and his team..
    I'm from Telangana...
i know bollywood is trash atleast for me but there are excellent movies like dangal.. bajirangi bhaijan.. padman... Sultan..pk..etc....
So please don't compare industries... just compare directors or producers etc...

      BOLLYWOOD ❌ INDIA
Bollywood isn't India. BOLLYWOOD means Maharastra. All regional languages have their own industry outside Maharastra but hindi movies are still made in Maharastra. That's why we have movies like Ganugabai, Tanhaji and one day Maharastra CM shiva ji rao from Nayak 😂😂😂 JAI UTTAR PRADESH ❤ we want to get rid of Marathi influence.
