Will I Get Fat When I Stop Restricting? | Eating Disorder Recovery

  • Question about recovery: "Hi Elisa - I have a weird question but it's something I can't stop thinking about. OK, so I know we should stop restricting and exercising, which I'm trying to do. But I don't want to get fat, and I know you say that our bodies will normalize, but what about all of the obese people in the world! I doubt the majority of them had eating disorders so if we just eat normally and don't exercise (like all the overweight people) won't be become like them?"

Unless you have some kind of metabolic issues, that's almost impossible :)
But if you have extreme hunger your body needs more food, and that means you should eat as much as your body tells you to, even if that means gaining some weight back. Then when you feel better again and the hunger stabilises, try making your eating habits and lifestyle more sustainable :)

I actually lost weight after about 12 months into recovery. I shot up past the weight my doctor recommended, about 10 pounds. It was hard and it sucked. After about 6 months my body stopped gaining. It stayed there. Then without really noticing, my body slowly went down now I just sit at 100 pounds (im only 5 feet tall). Which is the PREVIOUS weight I had before my ED blew up. So the next time you feel like sabotaging your recovery and then recover again, your body will always stabilize at your natural set point.

Try listening to the voices inside of your head, and writing down when the negative ones come up, or the urges come up. Ask yourself when they came up, what they are saying, and what actions lead up to you feeling that way. This can be a very powerful tool in understanding exactly what is going on in your head, and being able to navigate how to tackle it in the best way possible

My father is 'overweight', but he eats very healthy and regularly runs half marathon distances (in very respectable times - he 'beat' the owner of my local gym at the HM they both did on Sunday! Not bad for my 59 year old Dad, right?). He runs every other day, long distances and fast too! My father eats intuitively, but sticks mainly to whole foods (with the odd treat, like dessert or takeout on a special occasion). And when I say he is overweight, I don't mean just muscle... he does have a higher muscle mass than most because of all his activity, he is strong, but he has more fat than other people too! He is far from obese/very large, but he is stocky/chubby.
My father is very physically and MENTALLY healthy and happy.
I think my father is my biggest motivation for accepting that people have different healthy weights. My father is well, can take part in all the sports he enjoys and can achieve a high standard of result, he is a very mentally happy person and never worries about his food beyond making sure he makes healthy choices when hunger hits - and not even rigidly! He is very relaxed about it and enjoys lots of healthy whole foods.. but he does make sure to make good choices and changes where he thinks he needs to, based on how his body feels... He is not perfect, but seems to be 'in tune' with himself. His body has settled where it has, and it has lead him to a very healthy point. His whole family is mostly short and chubby lol, like chubby hobbits :D
My point is, an onlooker on the street would probably see my father and his 'chubby' physique compared to what is seen in the media and assume my father does nothing and overeats and doesn't exercise much... but it is far from the truth. I'm sure my father could supress his hunger cues and calories and achieve a leaner body, but you know... I think that would have a negative effect on his mental health, and his physical too really.
I take after my father, grandfather etc.. I am the female version of them. I have been diagnosed with anorexia though and I supress my natural weight, hunger cues, restrict calories... So I am quite a bit skinnier than the people I take after. If I were to recover, I think I would be chubby and stocky too.. but strong, and hopefully able to take part in the sports I enjoy too. I have to come to terms that my natural weight and chubbier/fatter than my supressed weight.... but if I can be half as active and HAPPY as my father is, and doing half marathons with him (instead of too sick and tired to join in :( I have to watch him run, when I wish I could run WITH him... I LOVE running...) then it will be worth it, right?
Sorry for the rant. I am learning a lot myself through my recovery process about what are real healthy weights, and what the media tries to tell us healthy weights are (to sell us things). I think I am lucky to have my father - who hasn't been touched by this, eats naturally, enjoys his sport and is such a happy person - as inspiration for this.
It's going to be a long journey though...

My binge eating isn't caused from restricting that's why not restricting doesn't work for me it'll just make me gain 20 kg and more ( tried it) for me it doesn't matter how healthy I eat I'll always end up binging. My binge eating is caused from trauma and stress so it's way harder to overcome it because it's not about my diet

3 Brendan My experience is similar, but restriction isn’t just about starving oneself, or over exercising. Restriction can also be about limiting many other things than just food. Deprivation of any kind counts as restriction.
One of my worst restrictions is social; I deprive myself of love and connection as a form of punishment, and then stuff the feelings of misery with food.
Overeating and then waiting many hours to eat again, because you feel terrible, is also a form of restriction.

I look like a zoombie with non- glowing skin, my eyes are dry, i think about food 24/ 7,binge eating.. my mood is so bad. I decided to go all in. It very hard at first. I don't controll my eating, i eat so much, bloated, have some acne. Scarest thing is my finger nail turn yellow and brown, my hair fall a lot and fell itchy on my skin !!!!. At first i think that because i ate a lot junk and processed food and want to restric those food again. Thank god, i did'nt do that. I listen and eat what ever i want. I still gain weight, fell uncomfortable sometime. Magically, all my bad health signs at the begin of recovery go away in 2- 3 week, my hair now full and shiny, my finger nail now turn pink again, i don't feel itchy any more. My body get used with it! It need time to accept the change. I gain weight but my hair, nail, skin, eyes, ..... better. My boobs is now dubble bigger 😂😂😂. I love it so much. I am too terrified to contemplate recovery, because I have lost all feeling in my stomach. I no longer have the ability to naturally gauge how much to eat. The stretch receptors, nutrient detectors no longer function and I never feel full unless I have gastroparesis (the lesser of the teo evils).
I am so frightened and suicidal.
How this happened is too complicated to go into. I was never a binger, purely a non-purging anorexic.
I tried to embrace recovery approx 4 years ago, during which I was advised to override my natural hunger and satiety signals. At the time,it was necessary to survive.
Stubbornly,I wanted to recover on "clean foods". It was simply too much volume of food for my body...
I cannot face the rest of my life like this.
Currently,I'm mildly underweight. My periods have stopped. My body fat percentage seems to fluctuate like crazy.
This is because,I was going out for walks but my body cannot tell me it is hungry,so I was eating too few calories. A sure fire way to acquire belly fat.
I am now petrified to stop exercising, but know I have to.
I cannot see my way through this at all.
It is the very reason people end up with gastric bands.
Apologies for the War And Peace length post. Just had to vent, and that is actually a vague synopsis.

"Intuitive eating is the result of you going through recovery." This is key. Other coaches in the IE community focus on moderation, which is just another form of restriction. I never understood why I couldn't moderate until I found your channel. I have to heal the restrictive mindset, and then my body will feel safe enough to start giving me true hunger and satiety cues. It's all about letting go of fear, in whatever form it might take so tht the body can relax.

recovery is so hard, I am already 27 days in recovery from a 8 month low restriction and binging, sometimes purging cycle, and I’ve already went up a size, seeing major differences even when eating about 900-1,300 calories a day, and working out either doing 50 min of a walking ab workout or 10 min hiit with 10 flat stomach yoga at the end of the day and some stretches, with doing tons of laps up and down stairs with a 3 story school. When I was dealing with these eating struggles, I was a normal weight and body fat percentage. And when I started I was almost overweight with probably more fat on me. It’s hard to start recovery now because I started at a normal weight, so now I’m scared I’m going to get overweight-obese, cause I see it happening, I don’t know if it’s gonna stop or not. I have been eating only healthy foods, one processed snack and everything else is natural and healthy, with good balance of carbs, protein and fat. The only good thing I’m seeing is I’m getting nice biceps and my leg muscles feel good, but my belly fat, not at all. My stomach looks very obese, like unhealthy fatty stomach even though I workout my abs and stretch and heat healthy and drink slim tea 2 times a day, i still see myself becoming overweight, if I do become overweight, is it possible for me to lose it if my metabolism catches up? This is coming from a 12 year old 4,11 girl. It is to much to handle at this age, i just want control over my body :/

The process of physical recovery was a bit different for me. As a teenager who developed an eating disorder when she was about fourteen years old (I‘m now seventeen), my body kinda regulated itself pretty fast. I‘ve been going through this physical recovery for the second time (first try 2017-2018) and by the first one I got to the highest weight I‘ve ever been, but still in the normal weight range and healthy bmi. So I then relapsed, lost a bunch of weight again and now I‘m at a very stable weight actually after recovering for the second time. But this time, my body, even though I still have episodes of extreme hunger, gets rid of every excess calories by simply heating up and producing more poop (I’m sorry tmi). I hope I do not trigger someone by mentioning numbers, but I‘m at a (I think) set-point range of 59-61kg at a height of 170cm and just cannot put on some more weight. (In addition to that, I‘m a very active person, who dances daily and sometimes goes to the gym and is up on her feet like 24/7.) When I first started recovery back in 2017 I‘ve gained like 16kg and ended up being at 66kg.
I just wanted to share my personal experience with weight gain, to show you, that everyone‘s recovery and results are completely different from each other so you don‘t have to fear a higher weight after you fully recovered. For me, personally, it was just I would say weird, because I‘m kinda suspicious if my body‘s really healed (I‘ve had my period regularly, have normal hunger and satiety cues and more energy and joy in my life than ever before), because on the internet there‘re so much people trying to help other’s by sharing their process in which they gained a few pounds over their normal and healthy set point, while I stick to mine now healthy weight and that without even trying (I’m not forcing myself to do sports!!!) For those of you who are interested in what I eat on a daily basis : I enjoy a bunch of fruits and vegetables, I eat meat, dairy products and I‘ve recently experienced and still am experiencing an ice cream and chocolate phase. But you know it‘s winter and christmas time, you gotta enjoy your self and get ya self unlimited chocolate :D
I hope I helped some of you by sharing my story. I still have a lot to do for my mental recovery, but I won‘t give up this time! 👍🏻
Oh yeah and I also eat potatoes, rice, bread and pasta when my mom‘s incorporating this for dinner! And sometimes like yesterday and today, I crave salad! I don‘t have to eat big portions to feel satisfied and can finally trust my body again. We just have to follow the flow and everything will fix itself. You simply have to trust the process, your body won’t harm you bc it‘s loving you unconditionally!

Sabrin Roble LOL. You could NOT be more far from the truth, and that isn’t quality advice for someone coming from a restrictive eating disorder. You can’t tell someone who is recovering from anorexia that he or she is “eating too much” and only needs 1700 cals with muscle training? No, this person needs REST and FOOD. And lots of it.

    • @lisay9859
      @lisay9859 Před 5 lety +17

Yes, your normal hunger cues will return. Don’t worry about your BMI, it isn’t important as long as you are healthy and happy. Keep eating and resting as much as you need. You should be eating a MINIMUM of around 3000 calories in recovery anyway, and that isn’t even including extreme hunger. Trust me, I went through the same exact thing. My weight stabilized, my hunger stabilized, my food obsessions went away. Hang in there and you will get through this❤️.

    • @lisay9859
      @lisay9859 Před 5 lety +2

Sabrin Roble I can barely understand what you’re writing. And exactly - recovery is also about your mind. I know this because I am also recovered from anorexia. That is WHY you need to eat whatever you want, whenever you want to recover and that is why nothing should be off limits. You have restricted your body and many times it leads to long term damage (shrunken hearts, starved brains, death). Eating is the most important thing to do so your body begins to trust you again and your metabolism can recover. Maybe that is how you recovered, but you cannot go around telling people how to eat and make them feel bad for extreme hunger which is out of their control. As someone who had an eating disorder you should know this. In recovery nothing should be off limits. Setting up rules for “healthy foods” and protein and “nutritious carbs” sets you up right for failure or even the development of orthorexia (as I had developed trying to eat “clean” in the beginning of my recovery).

One of my older brothers went on a calorie-restrictive diet for initial weight loss. He went from being obese to now being lean, and very toned and muscular. Granted, he doesn't restrict calories anymore... actually, he eats worth two, sometimes three people. But he has managed to maintain a lean and muscular frame ever since, since he continues to work out a lot. I guess he was one of the lucky 1% whose diet succeeded long-term? :/
Also, couldn't the overweight epidemic also have to do with the types of foods people eat? A lot of processed 'convenience' foods, vegetable and hydrogenated oils, animal products from diseased factory-raised animals, processed carbs, and a LOT of sodas? Ingredients that the average person doesn't recognise or can't pronounce? Added sugars and chemicals designed specifically to promote increased hunger and cravings so you buy more of the company's food products? This is why I have a hard time letting go of my own restrictive eating, because it seems like a lot of these foods that average Americans eat really *are* just that bad for you... :(

they are bad for you. But what she is saying is that people who have BINGE EATING disorder or compulsive overeating lost touch with their hunger signals. They have a warped perception of food. they eat by numbers, not satiety. When they can return to a normal sense of feeling full/hungry, and stop the "i cant have that" mentality which triggers urges to binge, once they are free from that, they are free from the addiction to food. the addiction to food is what makes dieting impossible. if they are addicted to food, diets dont work. Cure the addiction first- then focus on weight loss after.

I don’t feel like she’s really answering the question. YES, there is a chance that you will be some fat in recovery. But exercising is not the answer. Because then exercise is a form of restriction, a tool to burn calories and this doesn’t work. Because you CANNOT RECOVER if you are exercising. Your body needs to repair. It needs to anabolize instead of catabolize. I would highly suggest you go into recovery only when you are willing to gain weight and let your body do what it needs to do. If you can’t you will likely make it worse. If you truly surrender and recover, eventually the weight will come off on its own but it will take time. Years sometimes.

Oh God but the ignorance in the first message (0:39) where the anonymous user pretends to know all overweight people don't eat normally and don't exercise? And they even state they doubt the majority of overweight people don't have an eating disorder? Excuse-me, what? -_-

I can't stop myself calorie counting and exercising... But I don't have problem with overeating. I feel like I tend to always undereat. When I don't count calories, I worry that I'm eating less or eating too much. Idk what to do. I also lost my sense of hunger. I'm already on my desired weight range but I'm still worried. I want to have a healthy relationship with food. :(

That's exactly my Problem right now i stopped counting calories with myfitnesspal but i still kind of count them in my head. And i try to eat intuitivly now but i always worry if i'm eating too much and when cause of restricting for so long my hunger cues are all over the place. Like i could eat a pretty big meal but 30 min later and i'm hungry again :/
Did you fix it and if yes did you gain weight?
