Explaining Konstrakta's "Novo, bolje" (and Why It Should Win PZE2024)

- “Novo, bolje” is Konstrakta’s entry for Serbia’s national contest for Eurovision. Unsurprisingly, Konstrakta is amongst the favourites to win. The song talks about what it’s like being Serbian today… but also what it’s like being an artist… but also what it’s like returning to Eurivision as a well-placing representative of your country… but it’s also about consumerism… I’ve seen a fair amount of non-Serbian speaking people, and just in general non-Serbians trying to explain the song through translation, but, trust me, you need a Serbian native who’s been living here their entire life to explain certain aspects of this song to you. Mind you, Konstrakta, just like with “In Corpore Sano” has kept the meaning, or, meanings of the song as vague as possible - it can mean anything and everything, but also nothing, which in itself is a message.

Thank you for this Video and the deep dive into the deeper meaning of the Song. Konstrakta is a genius and i think she's very underrated despite placing so high. Sadly she didn't win the National Selection. I would have loved to see her again on the Eurovision Stage
Suptile criticism of Serbia's Progressive Party and their media mantra of "bigger better" is apparent. It makes sense why she made this a sequel to In Corpore Sano, a criticism of ruling politics.
And those who say Eurovision shouldn't have politics, they never knew the contest to begin with. The contest was always political, actively effecting and reflecting real life politics. I couldn't ask better from a true artist like Konstrakta.
Exactly! I was looking for a comment like yours to confirm what i believe is clearly obvious mocking of the authoritarian nature of Serbia’s decade long leader Aleksandar Vucic and his Serbian Progressive Party’s lust for for absolute control thru their all encompassing party machinery which at the last elections used the slogan of BRZE, JACE, BOLJE! (Quicker, Stronger, Better)
I just cant believe the opponents and even supporters of Vucic haven’t connected the 2 when they micro-analyse every other facet of Vucic’s Machiavellian ways. Konstrakta’s emphasis on the slogan which has an old communist totalitarian feel is quite brilliant! I personally am not for Vucic as he is too autocratic and also the ALL KNOWING ALL SEEING DOCTOR Konstrakta is talking about, but i am probably even less for the liberal anti-chauvinist parties on offer! Hence why he consolidates his grip on power as every day passes!
Although Novo, bolje is great overall, even without seeing a live performance, I think that In corpore sano is a masterpiece that won't be topped. Also, In corpore sano was by far the best Eurovision performance that year and perhaps best in general. Thanks for the great video.

"Evo sa'će" is sarcasm.
Good that some people are shining the light on her work, it has a lot of potential to be way bigger than what it is now in terms of reach of public.

This song is layered like an onion, it has so many things that explain life in Serbia now, but yet again the consumerism problem that can be understood in Europe and worldwide, not only in our country.
I would just like to add that part when the doctor says "you are fine" - she is mocking again our bad health system where the doctors are not willing to help because in the first place, they are also not happy in this delusional "better than good" situation in Serbia as our leading party claims.
Moreover, political part is hidden in the sentence "Pacific ocean could be more pacific" in a sense that we could've had less wars and have more pacifists amongst us instead of being hurt and angry patriots.
I love her art, I respect it so much.

Kao i uvek, Konstrakta je master za viseslojne pesme. Recimo ja sam u pojedinim delovim 'cula' kako proziva Vucica ( 'svugde mi se samo podvaljuje, svuda vidim samo anomalije'), bice bolje, evo sad ce ( za 2 godine najvise), bolje nego dobro ( toliko nam dobro ide da me je sramota). Naravno moze se shvatiti i na jos mnogo nacina, konzumerizam, insistiranje na konstantni napredak, nikad zadovoljni onim sto imamo, itd. Obrni okreni, Konstrakta je vrhunski umetnik!

just a little note, "neprestano" has a more feel of annoyance / negative connotation to it compared to "continuously", i personally would've translated it to "pestering/pushing", but still really good translation!

Svaka čast na analizi. Kao neko ko već 8 godina, prvo u srednjoj pa na faksu gde studiram unutrašnju arhitekturu imam Istoriju umetnosti kao predmet, nije mi bilo teško da odmah primetim gotovo sve stvari koje si naveo, posebno satiru o sns-u. Ali mi je drago da si ovo tako dobro i studiozno razložio za šire mase jer je ovo stvarno konceptualna i avangardna umetnost što ona radi korz svoje pesme.
I voted for Konstrakta two years ago and I would love to see her competing again.

I like Novo bolje more than in Corpore sano, it is more straightforward and direct, but it's also catchier. Better lyrics too, no Meghan Markle's hair 😁
We always wait for something newer and "better" to come along.. we are never satisfied.. always chasing the "new" iPhone.. the "new" hit.. the "new" superstar..
And we are almost never happier because of it..

“Tihi okean mogô je da bude tiši” is the best lyric anyone has written ever since Jana’s “Skoči pa se davi - i udavi se” and Maya Berović’s “Daj mi zlo, jer od dobrog baš kao da mi je zlo”.
(Indy’s and Dunja Ilić’s lyrics are left out of the ranking because they are simply different category and would require taking whole discographies in consideration)
Velika je verovatnoća (čitaj: sigurno) da je Konstraktin stih tu s određenom dozom (čitaj: ogromnom) ironičnog.
Sve je i da je glup, nije glup na isti način kao konkurencija i, što je još važnije - tu je ciljano i namerno. Ne prosto jer nije umela bolje.
The only disappointment here is that when I see the thumbnail I thought for a second that we were going to get another Konstrakta performance in Malmo. Oh well.

Breskvica's song is not about a conflict (????!!!). The lyrics are about (literally) about a devastating storm and thunders but the song ends with a message of hope and the storm goes over. You can interprete anything in this lyrics if you want to, but it has nothing to do with Kosovo nor Yugoslavia. It allows free Interpretation.

It should not even be in top 5, let alone win PZE. And, honestly, don't go around speaking the song is about something you believe it is cuz you basically got most of the stuff wrong, especially with Teya Dora and Breskvica. And if you were really searching for a deeper message, Elektroljubav has probably the strongest hidden message within it but it's just that type of music is never gonna do well and get enough audience.

@@sonjaradovic8499 interpretation is fine, everyone has the right to experience the song as they want to, I never pushed my opinion in the top spot neither do I want to. That's what this video is doing and I said their interpretation is wrong cuz if the artists says it one way and this video says the other way, who's right? Also, I was never rude or insulting in my original reply to the video to receive such a rude answer from you in the first place. I was just saying that compared to what the mentioned artists said about their songs is mostly contrary to what this video is saying, so I guess you hopped in to say that these artists don't even know their own songs right? But I see typical Serbian mentality here, everyone is an expert in every field, so we should probably leave our opinions aside and step in line for you to enlighten us.

Not gonna quote you. Just go and re-read the first two sentences you wrote.
As for the "the artist said it", have you ever wondered why literary critique exists at all? Hint : layers, upon layers, upon layers of meaning, unintended and intended ones.
The point of it is this: everyone has a right to "read" the text, minding the context, based on personal experiences. Konstrakta often shrewdly points out that she will not explain her song, but will leave it to the interpretation. Rightfully so, I'd say, avoiding the oversimplified explanation.
The point of yada-yadaing that just spilled over was this: it's alright to have an opinion and even be wrong. It's alright to "get stuff wrong". Agree to disagree, but don't bash the person who put himself or herself just for the sake of bashing. Now that I would call rude.
